The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a proper look at what’s cooking at Guarita over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we’ve got a slow start. The first few days are a bit of a write-off – small, messy, weak energy. We’re looking at a bit of a frustrating wait for anything decent. The water temp is sitting at 62°, which is pretty much bang on average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real sign of life shows up on Saturday, the 22nd of August. The morning session brings a clean 6 ft swell from the south, with a cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is moderate at 621, and it’s rideable, but it’s still a bit marginal. It’s not the standout, but it’s a sign things are waking up.
Now, the one to really circle on the calendar is Monday, the 24th of August. This is the pick of the entire forecast. We’ve got a 7 ft groundswell from the SSE with a very long period of 14 seconds, and the morning is dead flat calm – glassy as a mirror. The combined energy is strong at 1861. This is proper, powerful, clean surf. Because of the size and the long period, this is one for the experienced crew only. Over 8 ft is expert territory, and this is close to that, so if you’re not confident, sit this one out. The direction is a touch from the east for the optimum, but the quality of the swell and the wind make it a true standout.
After that, things settle back down. The following days drop off in size and get chopped up by onshore winds. We get a small window on Sunday, the 30th of August morning with a 4 ft SE swell and light cross-shore wind, but it’s only marginal. Then, on Monday, the 31st of August, the swell bumps up to 8 ft again from the ENE, but it’s accompanied by a nasty cross-onshore wind and rain, making it a messy, onshore mess – more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean paddle session.
The first week of September looks pretty poor overall. The wind is consistently onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell is lumpy. There’s a small pulse of 5 ft to 6 ft south swell on the 2nd and 3rd of September, but the conditions are not clean.
So, to sum it up: the first two weeks are a slow burn with one absolute gem on Monday, August 24th. If you can get out that morning for the glassy, powerful SSE groundswell, that’s your winner. The rest of the period is largely one to watch from the beach or spend doing something else.
Rusty.
