The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and listen up. It’s Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown for your local stretch. We’re looking straight at Guarita for the next couple of weeks, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag.
The swell energy kicks off with a solid pulse, hitting 1011 (moderate energy) on Sunday morning, with clean, cross-off winds. That’s a good sign. The water’s sitting at 63°F, which is bang on average for this time of year—nothing unusual there.
Sunday morning the 23rd is your first real shout. We’ve got a 6ft south swell, with a 12-second period, and a light 10 km/h WSW cross-off breeze. That’s clean, lined-up surf, but at this size and on a reef break with “advanced” difficulty, it’s strictly for the experienced crew. Too big for beginners, and the long period means it’ll be a bit straight at times on the beach, but the reef should handle it well.
Sunday afternoon will see a bump up to 8ft, but the wind swings onshore and the energy rockets up to 3323 (very strong). That’s messy and powerful—more of a kite day unless you’re a masochist.
Monday morning the 24th is decent again. A 8ft SSE groundswell at 14 seconds, with light SW cross-off wind, and the energy is still strong at 2114. It’s clean, but again, over 8ft later on so keep that for the experts.
Tuesday the 25th morning drops a little to 6ft, still clean, with a cross-off breeze. The energy falls to 793 (moderate), but it’s a good, manageable size for a wider range of surfers.
Now, we hit a bit of a lull. The surf turns small and choppy mid-week. Wednesday and Thursday are compromised by onshore winds and dropping swell. Friday the 28th morning brings a nice surprise: flat calm, glassy conditions. The swell is only 5ft but period is short at 9 seconds. That’s clean but weak. The energy is only 429 (weak to moderate). Saturday the 29th stays glassy but tiny, with 4ft and 9-second period. It’s surfable but ordinary.
Sunday the 30th morning sees a small bump back to 4ft, clean with cross-off wind, but it’s light rain and weak.
The real standout of the whole run is hiding in the second week. Mark it on your calendar: Wednesday, September 2nd, in the morning. We’re looking at a 8ft SSE swell, 10-second period, with a light 10 km/h WSW cross-off. The energy is solid at 1154 (moderate to strong). That’s clean, powerful, and clearly the best on offer for advanced surfers. It’s still expert-only territory at that size, but the conditions are prime.
Thursday September 3rd and Friday the 4th have a late-season glimmer, but by Saturday the 5th we’re back to tiny, weak, and choppy. The final kicker comes early on Monday September 7th: a 7ft east-southeast windswell, short 7-second period, but with clean cross-off wind and 843 (moderate) energy. The period is too short to be groundswell quality, but the wave height is there and the conditions are tidy. It’s a last-chance look for the forecast window.
So, if you’re serious, your best bet is Wednesday September 2nd morning at Guarita. It’s the standout for clean power. The Sunday the 23rd morning and Monday the 24th morning are also good, but the long period swell means the reef will shine better than the beach. Expect crowds possible at Guarita, it’s known to get a crew when it’s good.
