The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here with a look at the surf ahead for Guarita. We’ve got a few days of small, messy junk to start, but hold tight—there’s some serious grunt building for the end of next week and into the start of September.
Right now, Friday the 21st is a write-off. Tiny 0.5 ft to 2 ft swell from the ENE with a short 7-second period and weak combined energy (30) has nothing to offer. The wind is cross-off but it doesn’t matter—there’s just no wave to ride.
Saturday the 22nd sees a sudden jump in size, but the quality is rough. Morning brings 7 ft from the south with 9-second period and moderate energy (1363), but the wind is cross-off and it’s labelled marginal. The southerly direction is not ideal for this reef. Afternoon drops a little to 7 ft but the wind goes cross and choppy. Not the day.
Sunday the 23rd starts looking more promising. Early morning is clean with light cross-off wind and 6 ft south swell at a 12-second period (905 energy)—that’s a decent groundswell, and the conditions are clean. It’s still not the optimum easterly direction, but the quality is good. By afternoon the wind picks up to a moderate cross, messing it up.
Now, Monday the 24th is the standout of the first week. Morning delivers a solid 8 ft from the SSE, pumping with a very long 15-second period and very strong energy (2688). The wind is light offshore from the SW, glassy clean. This is proper groundswell for Guarita—experienced surfers only at that size. The long-period swell will draw lines nicely along this reef. It’s the best we’ll see for a while.
Tuesday the 25th morning holds decent 5 ft SSE swell, 12-second period (805 energy) and light cross-off wind, still clean. Afternoon turns ugly with a cross-onshore chop.
Wednesday and Thursday the 26th and 27th are a mixed bag—moderate cross-shore winds, lumpy conditions, and dropping energy (1043 down to 564). Not worth paddling out.
Then we hit a flat spell. Friday the 28th through Sunday the 30th is all small, weak ENE swell under 4 ft with energy sinking to 107. Winds are mostly light or glassy on the 29th afternoon and 30th afternoon, but the waves are ordinary—surfable but nothing to get excited about.
Monday the 31st brings a pulse of 6 ft ENE swell with a short 7-second period and moderate energy (567). The morning wind is moderate cross-off, but the afternoon goes glassy with 5 ft and 288 energy. It’s clean but short-period, so expect fat, weak waves.
Tuesday the 1st of September the swell is still around 4 ft to 5 ft from the east, but the wind cranks up to 22 mph in the afternoon. Poor.
Wednesday the 2nd and Thursday the 3rd are small and messy again. Energy drops to 125-385. Nothing doing.
Friday the 4th is marginal at best with 4 ft SSE swell (490 energy) and light cross-wind.
The real highlight lands on Saturday the 5th of September. Morning brings 6 ft from the SSE with an 11-second period and moderate energy (706), but the wind is light cross-off from the north and conditions are clean. This is a very good look—solid size, decent period, and clean faces. It’s the second standout after that Monday. Afternoon sees 6 ft with a 12-second period (787 energy) but a light cross-onshore wind, so grab the morning.
In short, if you’re free, Monday the 24th and Saturday the 5th of September are your sessions. The rest is a waiting game.
Rusty.
