The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s coming up for Guarita.
Overall, we’ve got a bit of a mixed bag on the horizon. The first few days are a write-off, but there’s a couple of real standouts that’ll make it worth waiting for.
The first surf worth paddling out for is on Thursday morning, July 16th. Guarita is looking at a 6ft NE swell with a short 8-second period, but the wind is a light 6 mph cross-offshore from the N. The water is sitting at 59°F which is much colder than normal for this time of year – a proper 5°F drop, so you’ll want a thick steamer. The energy is moderate (563). It’s clean, but the swell is a bit raw.
Things get seriously interesting on Sunday morning, July 19th. This is the standout of the forecast. Guarita gets a 7ft NE swell, and the wind swings light cross-offshore from the SW at 6 mph. The wave energy is strong (1011), and the conditions are described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is a powerful, clean swell. At 7ft, this is going to be pushing into the too-big-for-beginners territory, so it’s one for the advanced crew. The crowds are “sometimes” a factor here, so you might get a few locals out, but with that quality, it’s worth the company.
There’s a short window of glassy conditions on Monday morning, July 20th. The wind is dead calm, 0 mph, making it glassy. The swell drops to a small 3ft from the ENE (9 seconds), but it’ll be clean and fun on the longboard. The energy is weak (218). It’s a nice little breather after Sunday’s punch.
After that, the week goes quiet. Tuesday, July 21st through to the end of the month has a lot of poor surf with marginal conditions, onshore winds, and choppy water. The biggest issue is the wind – it’s constantly cross-on or just messy.
There is another potential highlight on Wednesday, July 30th, morning. A 6ft SSE swell with a very long 12-second period rolls in. The wind is cross-shore from the NNE at 9 mph, which isn’t perfect, but the energy is strong (964). That long period is a groundswell, and at a reef break like Guarita, it should produce some solid, well-shaped lines. It’s a long-range call, so less certain, but it’s the one to watch for the second week.
The rest of the second week is mostly a mix of small, weak swells with poor wind, so don’t hold your breath. The consistent theme here is that the wind is the enemy most of the time, but the clean windows are worth the wait.
Rusty, signing off.
