The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s cooking at Guarita over the next couple weeks.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but there’s definitely some sessions you’ll want to be in the water for. The water’s sitting at 58°, which is a full 6° colder than usual for this time of year, so don’t leave the thick rubber at home.
We start on Monday, 13th July. The afternoon is a washout – a 5ft SSE swell with a cross-shore wind and a combined energy of 580 (weak). Tuesday, 14th July, is no better: a 5ft SE swell in the morning with cross-shore winds, and the afternoon turns to chop with a cross-on breeze. Save your energy.
Wednesday morning, 15th July, is where it gets interesting. A light offshore wind from the N will clean up a 3ft ESE swell. It’s small, but it’ll be clean. The combined energy is moderate at 431. Thursday morning, 16th July, is a repeat: 5ft from the NE with a light offshore wind. Clean, but still small.
Friday morning, 17th July, the swell jumps to 6ft from the ENE with a clean offshore wind. The combined energy climbs to 933 (moderate). The size is pushing solid for intermediates. Saturday morning, 18th July, is my pick for the first week. You’ve got a clean 5ft E swell with light offshore winds. The combined energy is moderate at 376, but the quality will be good and it’s a much more manageable size.
Saturday afternoon sees a bigger 7ft ENE swell, but the cross-shore wind makes it lumpy. Sunday, 19th July, and Monday, 20th July, are poor with onshore and cross-shore winds. The first week ends with a few days of small, messy surf.
Looking into the second week, there’s some real promise. Wednesday morning, 22nd July, is going to be glassy. The wind drops to nothing, and we’ll have a 6ft S groundswell with a long 11-second period. The combined energy is strong at 796. This is classic Guarita – long-period groundswell that will focus on the reef. For an advanced surfer, this is a standout.
Thursday afternoon, 23rd July, is another glassy moment. A 5ft SSE groundswell with an 11-second period and flat calm conditions. It will be incredibly clean and well-shaped. Energy is a solid 576.
Friday, 24th July, stays clean with offshore winds, but the swell swings ENE and the period drops to 7-8 seconds, making it less interesting.
The biggest swell of the period hits Saturday morning, 25th July. A solid 10ft from the ENE with a clean offshore wind. The combined energy is a very strong 2118. This is heavy, expert-only territory. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a short-period, powerful wall. For Guarita’s reef, it might offer some heavy, barrelable sections, but only for the brave.
Sunday morning, 26th July, has a 6ft E swell with clean conditions and a moderate 597 energy – a solid, fun option after the big Saturday. Monday morning, 27th July, is another top pick: 6ft from the E, 10-second period, light offshore wind from the SW, and a moderate 603 energy. Clean and well-shaped. Tuesday, 28th July, continues the clean trend with offshore breezes and a consistent 6-6ft E swell.
For my money, the best bets are Wednesday morning, 22nd July, and Thursday afternoon, 23rd July. Both offer glassy conditions and solid, long-period groundswell from the south. They’re not the biggest, but they’ll be the cleanest and most user-friendly for the experienced surfer. The Saturday morning, 25th July, is a big-wave-only option.
Rusty.
