The Lowdown
Alright, let’s see what’s cooking for Atlantida over the next couple of weeks. It’s a slow start, but there’s a real good one building in the back half.
The first few days are a bit of a waiting game. Sunday the 19th has a clean 5ft swell from the ENE with a light cross-offshore breeze, and the combined energy is moderate (393). The waves are short-period (9 seconds), so they’ll be a bit soft and crumbly, not a lot of punch. The afternoon gets a bit choppy with a cross-shore wind.
Monday and Tuesday are pretty meh. The swell drops a bit, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, keeping the surface bumpy. The water temp is about normal for this time of year.
The first real highlight is Tuesday morning, July 21st. It’s glassy, dead calm, with a 4ft ENE swell. The energy is still there (283), and with zero wind, it’ll be smooth as butter. For a beach/pier spot like Atlantida, that’s a dream for a long, clean session on a longboard. The short period means it’ll be a bit fat, but it’ll be fun.
We hit a flat spell from Wednesday onward. The swell drops to under 3 feet by the weekend, and the winds are mostly onshore. The combined energy dips into the weak range. There’s a small window on Saturday morning, July 26th with a 3ft swell and clean cross-offshore wind, but it’s short-period (7 seconds). It’s surfable, but nothing to get stoked about.
Then the second week brings a big change. The swell comes up, and the period gets long. The absolute standout is Saturday, August 1st. The morning is dead flat calm, glassy, with a 5ft SSE swell. The period is 13 seconds – that’s a proper groundswell. The combined energy is a strong 927. This is going to be clean, powerful, and well-shaped. The afternoon sees the period climb to 14 seconds and the energy jumps to 1308, but a light cross-onshore wind will put a slight ripple on the face. The morning is the clear winner.
The next morning, Sunday, August 2nd, is still solid with a 5ft, 14-second swell, but a cross-shore wind will add a little chop. The energy is still very strong (1069). The afternoon gets ruined by a strong onshore wind.
So, the call is: don’t bother with the first week unless you’re really jonesing for a glassy, small wave. The big one to circle is Saturday morning, August 1st. Glassy, solid groundswell, and that long period will give you some proper, lined-up waves. That’s the one.
