Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
Right, things are pretty quiet to kick things off down at Atlantida. This is a exposed beach and pier setup, and it’s a spot that’s inconsistent at the best of times. The water is sitting at 59°, and it’s 4° colder than what's normal for this time of year – that’s a real chill, so you’ll want a good thick wetsuit.
We start on Saturday the 4th of July with a bit of swell about 7 ft from the SSE, but the wind is a moderate cross-off from the SW which might keep it a little lumpy. The energy is moderate at 884. It’s a bit marginal, really, and nothing to write home about. Sunday the 5th is smaller, around 6 ft, but the wind swings to a light cross from the NNE and it gets a little choppy later. Not the best.
Monday and Tuesday the 6th and 7th are offering very small surf, dropping under 3 ft. The wind is improving, with a bit of offshore on Tuesday morning, but you’re looking at knee-high stuff. The crowd factor is *often* busy here, so for waves this small it might be a bit of a scratch session. The energy is weak, around 160.
Wednesday the 8th is a small bright spot. The swell picks up to 3 ft from the S with a period of 11 seconds. The wind is a light offshore from the WNW in the morning – clean conditions. The energy is still moderate (251). It’s surfable, but it’s not a stand-out.
If you can be patient, the real gem is tucked away in the second week. Thursday the 16th of July sees a pulse of swell from the S. The afternoon shows a solid 8 ft – that’s getting into expert territory, over 8 ft being only for those with skills. The wind is a cross-off from the SW, and the period is 9 seconds, so it’s windswell, decent but not super organised. The energy jumps right up to 1660, which is strong. This is the best of the whole run for size, but the period is on the shorter side, so it might wall up a bit on the beach.
Then, Sunday the 19th of July is the other standout. The morning is glassy, with the wind calm from the W. Swell is 4 ft from the SSE, running on a long 13-second period. That’s proper groundswell energy. The combined energy is 523, which is solid for the size. With glassy conditions, that’s your cleanest, longest-lined window. Expect the crowd to be *often* around, but for this quality, it’ll be worth the company. Remember with that long period, it’ll break a bit more straight on the beach, so look for points or any bend in the pier if it’s working.
The rest of the second week is catch-up sessions. The 10th and 13th see glassy mornings but only tiny 3 ft surf. The 15th has a 4 ft windswell but the period is only 6 seconds, so it’ll be weak and bumpy.
So overall: get out for that glassy Sunday morning on the 19th of July for the best shape, or if you’re an expert after a bigger push, the afternoon of the 16th of July is your only real size window. Be ready for it to be inconsistent in between.
Rusty.
