The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s shaping up for Capao da Canoa over the next couple of weeks.

It’s a slow start, and honestly, it’s a bit of a waiting game. The first few days are pretty ordinary for Capao da Canoa, with small, onshore-affected waves that won’t get the heart racing. The water is sitting at 61°, which is a touch cooler than usual for this time of year.

The first real blip on the radar comes on Saturday morning, the 12th. We’ve got a solid pulse of S swell pushing through at 7ft, but it’s a short-period windswell at 8 seconds and the wind is cross-offshore. The combined energy is pumping at 1082 (moderate wave energy), so there’s power there, but expect a bit of lumpy, powerful surf. It’s solid, but not the cleanest.

The standout window, and the one to circle on the calendar, is the morning of Tuesday the 15th. The wind swings to a clean cross-offshore from the SW, and we’ve got a clean 3ft S swell with a 10-second period. The combined energy is 544 (moderate wave energy), and the conditions are forecast to be very clean. This is the pick of the first week for a longboard or a funboard.

Looking further out, the morning of Saturday the 19th also looks promising with a glassy 4ft ENE swell and cross-offshore wind, making for clean lines at this sandbar.

The real heavyweight, though, is looming on the 25th of September. Friday morning kicks off with glassy conditions and a 8ft ENE swell, kicking up a combined energy of 737 (moderate wave energy). That’s a big, clean swell for the area. But by Friday afternoon, it gets even bigger, climbing to 10ft with a combined energy of 1153 (strong wave energy). The wind is still light, but that swell is predicted to be too big for this break. That’s expert-only territory, and even then, it’s going to be a beast. Mark it as a promising but uncertain call this far out.
