The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's happening at Cantao da Praia Grande over the next couple of weeks.

Right off the bat, the next few days are looking pretty flat and ordinary. There's a bit of small swell on Wednesday the 29th, with 2ft surf coming from the south, but conditions are messy with a cross-offshore wind and light rain. The water is sitting at 64°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year. Not one to get excited about.

Thursday the 30th morning is a bit better with a 2ft south swell and glassy conditions – dead calm wind. That's clean, but it's tiny. The combined energy is only 63, so really weak stuff. The afternoon goes cross-onshore and choppy, so that window is short.

Friday the 31st sees a bump in size to 5ft, but it's a short-period, 6-second easterly windswell with a cross breeze all morning and a fresh cross-onshore in the afternoon. That's just messy, lumpy, and not worth paddling out for.

The first weekend of August brings a bigger, 7ft easterly swell on Saturday the 1st, but it's short-period (8 seconds) and the wind is cross-shore, creating a cross-chop. The energy is high, at 727, but the quality is poor. Sunday the 2nd drops back to 3ft with glassy conditions in the morning, but again, it's weak and ordinary.

The first real standout pops up on Tuesday the 4th of August. The early morning session is the pick of the early week. The swell is 3ft from the SSE, but it's a long-period 11-second groundswell, and the wind is glassy. The water is clean, the combined energy is 222 (moderate), and it's the best conditions we've seen so far. The break is fairly consistent, but it's also exposed to the south swell. Just keep in mind that with a longer period like this, the waves might be a bit more lined up and better shaped, but it can sometimes break a bit too straight on a beach. It's a good call for a quiet paddle.

The next morning on Wednesday the 5th sees a similar swell size, but the wind turns cross-shore and the quality drops off.

We get a bit of clean surf on the 6th and 7th, but it's very small (2ft to 3ft) and the energy is weak. Flukey little waves.

Now, the real standout window is the second weekend. Saturday the 8th of August has a clean morning with a 3ft easterly swell and a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is a solid 232. It's not huge, but it's clean and rideable. The crowd situation is listed as "often," so expect some company.

Sunday the 9th morning is even better for an early paddle. The swell is 4ft from the SSE, but it's a short-period 6-second windswell. The wind is light and cross-offshore, making it clean. The energy is 235. It's a good, fun-sized morning.

Then the real highlight of the entire forecast. Tuesday the 11th of August. The morning has 5ft of east swell, clean with a light cross-offshore wind. But the afternoon session is the absolute best on offer. The swell picks up to 6ft from the east, the wind goes glassy, and the combined energy jumps to 662. That's a powerful, clean, glassy afternoon. That's the one to mark on your calendar. The swell is getting up there, so it's not for beginners, but for anyone with a bit of experience, that's going to be a great session. The crowd might be an issue, but for that quality, it's worth it.

The rest of the run into the 12th and 13th falls apart with onshore winds and rain. The 13th has a 2ft, 16-second groundswell, but it's onshore and messy, which is a waste of that long-period energy.

So, overall, it's a bit of a slow start, but the morning of Tuesday the 4th and the afternoon of Tuesday the 11th are your absolute best bets. The 11th is the standout.

Rusty.
