The Lowdown
Alright, let’s look at what’s going on at the local sandbar. The whole 16-day stretch is pretty grim, to be honest. There’s a massive quiet period with barely any surf worth getting out of bed for. The first decent window doesn’t open up until late July. For the first several days, it’s flat, small, and messy. We’re talking a gap of over a week with no real recommendations.
Tower Road (sandbar) is the only spot we’ve got. Water temp is 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – nothing crazy, just a little odd.
Starting off, Tuesday 14 July through Thursday 16 July is tiny. Waves are a measly 0.3 ft to 0.7 ft with periods either super short or a weird long one at 15 seconds but no height. Winds are all over the place – glassy Thursday morning but mostly cross-shore. Wave energy is pathetic: 16 and 5. Not worth suiting up.
Friday 17 July to Sunday 19 July sees some growth, with waves up to 2 ft to 2 ft, but the period is short – 5 to 6 seconds – and wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. There’s a brief offshore Sunday morning, but the waves are still weak. Energy stays in the teens and thirties.
Monday 20 July to Wednesday 22 July? Same old. Swell around 1 ft to 2 ft, short period, and more onshore breezes. Energy finally climbs a bit – 66 on Tuesday morning – but the quality is crummy.
The first real flicker of hope comes on Thursday 23 July. Swell hits 2 ft Thursday afternoon, but it’s a short 4-second period with cross-onshore wind. Not clean.
Friday 24 July is the first time we get a pulse. The morning has 3 ft swell from the SE with a 7-second period and cross-shore wind. Energy is 105 – moderate. The afternoon drops to 2 ft but with a much longer 13-second period and energy of 128. Still cross-shore, so expect some chop, but the longer period gives better shape. This is the first vaguely rideable window.
Saturday 25 July morning has 2 ft swell with an 11-second period and energy of 142 – the highest of the whole forecast. But wind is cross-onshore again, so it won’t be glassy. The afternoon fades.
From Sunday 26 July on, it’s back to small, short, and messy – 1 ft to 2 ft, periods around 7 to 8 seconds, and mostly cross-shore or onshore wind. The last day, Wednesday 29 July, shows 3 ft from the E with a very short 5-second period, but glassy conditions in the afternoon – that might offer a few clean, weak waves if you’re really jonesing.
So what’s the best? This is a tough call. The standout is probably Friday 24 July afternoon or Saturday 25 July morning. That Friday brings the longest period swell with moderate energy, and Saturday has the highest energy of the whole run. But don’t expect any glory. Tower Road is exposed to ENE swell, and the wind just never really plays ball. For beginners, the size is fine – all under 5 ft – but the inconsistency and wind make it a challenge. Experts will be left wanting.
Honestly, with the low energy and messy wind, this setup looks more like a kiteboarding day than a solid paddle session. If you’re determined, keep your eyes on Thursday 24 July through Saturday 25 July. It’s the best of a bad bunch.
