The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – this is one of those outlooks where you might want to pick up another hobby for a while. The whole 16-day window is a tough one for Tower Road. There’s a big gap of nothing good at the start, and even when things start to look a little more promising, it’s still just barely surfable.
We’re looking at a long stretch of flat to tiny, weak swell. For the first week and a half, from Sunday 23 August right through to the end of the month, the waves are mostly around 0.7ft, with a combined energy that’s often in the teens or low twenties (21 to 37). That’s weak, mate. The wind is all over the place – cross-off, glassy, onshore – but none of it matters when there’s no wave to ride. The water temp is 77°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least it’s a nice swim.
There’s a slight bump in mid-week, but it’s still poor. Thursday 27 August afternoon sees the swell lift to 3ft, but the period is a shocking 4 seconds – that’s wind chop, not a wave you want to paddle out for. The energy is still only 43. The wind is cross-off, so it’s clean, but the quality just isn’t there.
The real story starts on Thursday 3 September. That’s the first day we get a wave that’s even worth mentioning. The morning of the 3rd shows a 2ft swell from the ESE with a 12-second period, and the wind is offshore from the W. That’s clean. The combined energy is 127 – moderate. It’s still only a 1 out of 10 in the guidance, but it’s surfable. The afternoon of the 3rd gets a little better: 2ft from the SE, 13 seconds, cross-off wind from the NW, and a jump in energy to 214. That’s the best-looking window in the whole forecast. The swell is small, but the period is decent, and the clean conditions could make it fun for a log or a mid-length. It’s still tiny, so don’t expect much.
After that, Friday 4 September holds similar energy (212 and 200) but the wind is stronger and the conditions are more marginal. The weekend of 5-6 September sees a bump to 3ft from the E, but the period drops to 8 seconds and the wind is onshore or side-shore. It’s messy. The energy is still moderate (199, 183), but it’s not clean.
The final days, Monday 7 September, show the biggest swell of the period: 4ft to 5ft from the E, with periods around 10 seconds and then dropping to 6 seconds. The wind is cross-off to offshore, so it’s clean. The energy on Monday morning hits 290. That’s moderate to strong, but the short period on the afternoon (6 seconds) means it’s going to be lumpy and weak. It’s still a marginal call.
Honestly, the standout is the afternoon of Thursday 3 September. It’s the cleanest, most promising session in the whole 16 days, but it’s still small. If you’re desperate, that’s your window. Everything else is a struggle.
Stay patient, and check back in a few days – forecasts can change.
Rusty.
