The Lowdown
Hey folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about the outlook for Tower Road. I’ve gotta be straight with you – we’re looking at a pretty grim run for the next couple of weeks. There’s a massive gap right through the start, with nothing worth paddling out for until well into the first week of September. The forecast shows a whole lot of days with tiny, weak waves and poor conditions, so don’t bother checking the buoys or your phone for a while.
The first real flicker of something surfable doesn’t show up until the morning of Tuesday, September 1st. That morning we’ve got a 5ft swell coming out of the ESE, with a short period of 6 seconds. The wind swings to a cross-offshore from the SSW at 12 mph, which keeps things clean. The combined swell energy is moderate at 270. It’s marked as a marginal call, maybe questionable tide, so it’s not a standout. The afternoon sees the same direction but the wind picks up to 19 mph, still cross-off, but the swell drops a touch to 4ft and the energy bumps to 300. Conditions are clean but it’s still not firing.
Then on Wednesday, September 2nd, the morning looks a bit cleaner with a cross-offshore wind from the SSW at 12 mph, but the swell drops right off to 2ft from the SE with a period of 12 seconds. That’s a long period groundswell, which can mean better shaped waves, but at this size it’s pretty weak – the energy is only moderate at 122. The afternoon improves slightly with the wind easing to 6 mph, still cross-off, and the swell hanging at 2ft, period 11 seconds. Energy drops to 96. It’s described as surfable but very ordinary conditions. That’s the closest we get to a half-decent session, but honestly, it’s not a standout.
The rest of the outlook is a desert. From Thursday, September 3rd, right through to Sunday, September 6th, we’re looking at tiny swell from the ESE, mostly 0.7ft to 1ft, with onshore or cross-onshore winds and very low energy – all under 60. The water temperature at Tower Road is sitting at 78°F, which is a touch warmer than average for this time of year, so at least the water feels good when you’re sitting there waiting for a set that never comes.
Bottom line: there’s nothing in this window that’s worth getting excited about. The best bet is the morning of Tuesday, September 1st, or the afternoon of Wednesday, September 2nd, but even that’s a long shot. If you’re desperate, take a small board and a good attitude. Otherwise, save your energy. This is one of those stretches where the forecast can change, but right now, it’s looking pretty bleak.
Rusty.
