The Lowdown
Righto, let’s get real about Tower Road for the next two weeks. I’ve gotta be straight with you – the outlook is grim. The forecast is showing a long stretch of very weak, short-period slop with hardly any energy to get excited about. The combined swell energy is constantly in the low double digits, barely scraping into the 30s or 40s a few times, and often sitting around 15 to 30 (that's weak energy, plain and simple). We're looking at mostly 0.7ft to 2ft of messy, directionless junk. It’s a tough pill to swallow, but for an exposed sandbar like this, the lack of proper groundswell and consistent chop means you’ll mostly be staring at flat, lumpy water. For the entire 16-day window, there isn't a single recommendation worth paddling for. That’s a blank run, and given how inconsistent the spot can be, it’s not entirely abnormal for this time of year. The only sliver of hope might be for wind sports – when the onshore picks up and the surf is trashed, Tower Road could be more interesting for a kite session than a paddle.
Let’s walk through the whole thing chronologically. Starting Friday, 21st August, we’ve got a measly 2ft to 2ft from the NE with a period of 4 to 6 seconds and a combined energy of just 33 to 52. The wind is a cross-on from the NNE or onshore from the ENE. That’s poor, choppy, and not worth your time.
Saturday, 22nd, it gets worse. Light rain, 1.0ft from the ESE at 8 seconds, energy down to 24, with a moderate cross-onshore from the east at 16 mph. Choppy, messy. The afternoon sees a slight improvement to 2ft but with a 4-second period and only 27 energy, plus a cross-shore wind from the SSE.
Sunday, 23rd, through to the end of the month, we’re stuck in a rut. Swell heights hover between 0.7ft and 1ft, periods are mostly 4 to 12 seconds, but the energy values are pathetic – mostly in the teens and twenties. The wind does go cross-offshore or clean at times (like Sunday morning with a light westerly), but with zero wave energy, clean conditions just mean flat, tidy water. The few moments of glassy conditions, like Saturday, 29th August morning with a 1ft SE swell and a glassy ENE breeze, still only muster an energy of 29. There’s simply no power to surf.
As we roll into early September, it’s more of the same. Tuesday, 1st September, shows a 2ft SSE swell with a 6-second period and energy of 44, accompanied by a light offshore from the SW. That’s about the best it gets – clean, but tiny. Wednesday, 2nd, has a 1ft SE swell with a 12-second period and 47 energy, but the wind is cross-on from the north. Thursday, 3rd, is back to 1ft at 10 seconds with a cross-onshore wind. Friday, 4th, and Saturday, 5th September, have 2ft to 2ft from the SSE at 6 to 7 seconds, with clean offshore winds on Saturday morning from the WSW. Combined energy peaks at 38, but it’s still just ankle-slapping dribble.
Honestly, the entire 16-day window offers zero quality surf for Tower Road. Conditions are consistently poor with small, weak, and short-period swell. There are no standouts, no exceptions. If you’re desperate, wait for the glassy mornings on the 29th August or 5th September for a paddle in flat water, but that’s about it. For now, the forecast is a write-off.
