The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and settle in, because I gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. Let's get into it.
So, we're looking at Rehoboth Main. Right off the bat, the water is sitting at 78°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. Feels nice, but the waves are the problem. We’ve got a run of tiny, weak swell for the first week and a half. We’re talking about a knee-high dribble from the 18th of August right through to the 30th. The combined energy is mostly in the single digits or low teens, which is just flat-out weak. There’s a few days where the wind is clean – like Wednesday the 19th with a light cross-off, and even a glassy morning on the 25th – but the waves are just too small to get excited about. It’s a long, dry spell.
The first real glimmer of hope doesn't come until the 30th of August. Sunday morning, the wind is a light cross-off from the NW, and we finally see a bit of swell, about 2ft from the ESE. The period is 9 seconds, so it’s got a little bit of shape to it. The energy is up to 71, which is still pretty weak, but it’s the best we’ve seen. The conditions are described as "surfable but very ordinary," which is about right. This is the only window that’s truly worth a look. The wind stays clean into the afternoon, but the swell is tiny.
The next day, the 31st, the wind goes cross-shore and the energy drops back down. Things just get messy again. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore for most of the first week of September, with that weak SE swell barely making a ripple. The energy occasionally climbs into the high 70s or 90s, but with short period waves and dirty wind, it’s a no-go. The setup is a beach break, and with the wind howling onshore for most of it, it’s looking more like a kite-surfing window than a paddle-surfing one.
In short, there’s only one time to even think about getting wet: the morning of Sunday the 30th of August. It’s not a standout, it’s just the only option. Beyond that, it’s a long wait for anything decent.
