The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here with a look at what’s coming up for Torrance Beach/Burn Out. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag over the next couple of weeks, so let’s get into it.
We start off pretty flat with poor surf conditions on Friday the 17th. The water temp is sitting at 71°, which is pretty unusual – a solid 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. Swell is tiny at 1ft from the SW, but with a very long period of 19 seconds, it’s all show and no go. Energy is moderate (188). Not worth paddling out.
Saturday morning the 18th is where things turn a corner. We’ve got 2ft of SW swell, still a long period at 18 seconds, and the energy is building (257). The wind is SSE, a light cross-offshore, so it’s clean. This is a solid little window for a longboard or a funboard. Expect decent shapes, though the long period might make it a bit walled at the beach break.
Sunday morning the 19th is marginal with a light crosswind and the same 2ft SW swell. Not the best, but still rideable if you’re keen.
The real standout, and the best of the whole run, is Monday morning the 20th. Glassy conditions, a slight air, and 3ft of SSW swell. That’s clean, groomed, and with moderate energy (242). The wind is dead off the water. If you can get out there, this is the session.
Tuesday the 21st through to Thursday the 24th morning are mostly onshore or cross-on, with bumpy conditions. Swell bumps up to 3ft and 3ft, but the wind ruins it. Thursday afternoon the 24th does see a very long period 26 second SSW groundswell, but it’s tiny at 1.0ft and onshore. All energy, no rideable surf.
Friday morning the 24th is a repeat of the Monday setup – clean with SSE cross-off wind, 2ft SSW swell with a 24 second period, and energy climbing (395). Clean again, but the long period might keep it straighter at the beach.
Saturday the 25th through Tuesday the 29th mornings have marginal conditions with light cross-onshore winds. Swell sits between 2ft and 3ft, but energy is building – we hit 930 on Monday the 27th morning. That’s moderate to strong wave energy, but the wind is just enough to keep things bumpy. Still worth a look early if you don’t mind a bit of texture.
Wednesday the 29th afternoon and Thursday the 30th morning close out the run with the best of the back half. Thursday morning the 30th has 3ft SSW swell, a cross-off breeze, and clean conditions. Not the same quality as Monday the 20th, but it’s a solid option for a glassy session.
From Friday the 31st and into August 1st, things drop off. Tiny 2ft WNW windswell and onshore winds. The energy falls to 22 – that’s weak. Not worth the drive.
Overall, the standout is Monday morning the 20th – glassy, 3ft, clean. If you miss that, Thursday morning the 30th is the next best. Don’t sleep on that Saturday morning the 18th either if you want a clean, small wave. For the rest, you’re battling the wind.
Rusty.
