The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and frustrating for Torrance Beach, with Burn Out doing its usual thing. The water is sitting at 70°F with a massive 5°F anomaly – that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, which is a weird one to wrap your head around when the waves are this quiet.
For the first week, from Monday, July 13th through to the end of that week, it’s a real struggle. Swell is tiny, mostly around 1ft to 2ft from the SSW, and the wind is a constant problem – cross-onshore or onshore most of the time. The combined energy is weak, sitting between 139 and 259 (all under 300), so the ocean just doesn’t have any grunt. The only small glimmer is Thursday morning, July 16th, when a light cross-offshore breeze from the SSE cleans it up a bit, but the waves are still only 1ft with a 16-second period – that’s long period, but for a beach break, it’ll be sliding straight and weird. Not worth paddling out for.
The second week doesn’t really get any better for most of the time. There’s a gap of several days with nothing worth recommending. Then, finally, a standout appears on Sunday morning, July 26th. That’s still a week and a half away, so treat it with some caution, but it looks promising. Swell is a punchy 2ft from the SSW, but the period is a very long 19 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to 400 – that’s moderate energy, actually feeling like there’s some push. The wind is light from the SSE, which is cross-offshore, so the surface will be clean. The break is exposed to the WNW, and that SSW swell will wrap in nicely. The water is still warm, but the conditions are finally looking good. Just be aware, with that long period, the sets will be fat and fast at Burn Out – it’s a beach break, so it might be a bit straight, but it’ll be the best of a quiet month.
Monday morning, July 27th, has a similar 2ft from the SW at 18 seconds, but the wind is light cross-shore, and the energy is strong at 361. The forecast is only marginal, though, so don’t get your hopes up too high. Tuesday afternoon, July 28th, has a clean cross-offshore breeze and 2ft swell from the SW, with good energy at 259, and that’s another decent window.
Overall, the pick of the entire 16 days is Sunday, July 26th morning. It’s a long way out, but if it holds, you’ll get clean, waist-high lines with some real power. The rest is a whole lot of nothing. Crowds are often a thing here, so expect company if you do go.
Rusty.
