The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for this stretch of coast. We’ve got a bit of a slow start, but there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.
The water is sitting at a balmy 71°F at Torrance Beach, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual, but it’s going to feel like a bath.
The opening days are pretty sorry. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th are a write-off with tiny, weak swell and poor conditions. The waves are barely 2ft and the wind is all over the place. You’re not going to want to paddle out for that.
We’ve got a real gap here. The first sniff of something decent doesn’t show up until the early morning of Monday the 21st. The swell builds to 3ft, with a moderate combined energy (416), and the wind is light and cross-shore. It’s still a bit marginal, but it's the first real look.
The standout window is the morning of Sunday, July 26th. This is the best on offer. The swell is 2ft from the SW, with a very long period of 19 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy is a solid 577. The real kicker is the wind: it’s light and cross-offshore, which will make for clean, glassy faces. Torrance Beach/Burn Out is a fairly consistent spot, and it’s exposed to the WNW, so this SW swell will wrap in nicely. Keep in mind that with such a long period, it might break a little straight at the beach, but the clean conditions will make up for it. The crowds are often here, so just be aware of that.
The following week sees a bit more activity. The morning of Monday, July 27th, has 3ft SW swell with 612 combined energy, but the wind is cross-onshore, so it’s not as clean. Tuesday the 28th is similar, with a light cross-onshore breeze keeping things a little bumpy.
By Wednesday, July 29th, the morning has a stiff 15 mph cross-offshore wind from the SE, which is clean but strong. The afternoon settles with a light breeze and clean conditions and 3ft swell. That’s a decent option.
After that, the swell drops off rapidly. By the end of the month and into the start of August, we’re looking at tiny, weak waves again. The 31st of July and the 1st of August are flat with no energy.
The very last day, Sunday, August 2nd, gives a flicker of life with 3ft of short-period SSW swell (10 seconds), but the combined energy is only 215, and it’s just a marginal morning. It’s not worth getting excited about.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a bust. The real gem is the morning of the 26th of July. The second week has a few other mornings that are okay, but not nearly as good. If you’re patient, that Sunday morning will be the one.
Rusty.
