The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for the next couple of weeks.
We're looking at a pretty quiet stretch overall, with a few small windows of fun. The surf’s gonna be small for most of the run, so keep your expectations in check. The first real glimmer of hope doesn't pop up until the morning of Friday the 18th, with a small 2ft SW swell rolling in. The energy is modest (281) but the wind is a light cross-off, so it’ll be clean. The best bet on offer is the morning of Saturday the 19th. The swell is still a tiny 2ft from the SW, but the wind is a light, clean cross-shore and the combined energy is moderate (235). It’s not going to be pumping, but it’ll be the most user-friendly wave of the first week. For a beginner spot like Torrance Beach/Burn Out, that’s your best look.
Now, the week that follows is a bit of a write-off. We get a bump in size – a 3ft to 4ft SSW swell on Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st – but the wind is awful. It's straight onshore or cross-on, turning everything into a messy, choppy crumble. The combined energy is actually good (482 to 608), but it's completely wasted. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddling one. We go through a few days of poor conditions, with a few marginal moments on the 23rd and 24th.
The real standout, if you can wait, is the morning of Friday the 24th. The swell bumps up to 2ft from the SSW, but the period jumps to 24 seconds. That’s a very long period groundswell, and the energy is a solid 374. The wind is a light cross-off, so the surface will be clean. For a beginner break, a long period wave like this is a dream – it’ll have plenty of shape and push, though it might be a little slow and walled. That’s the pick of the entire forecast.
Looking further ahead, the morning of Saturday the 25th has a 3ft SSW swell with a 21-second period and clean light cross-shore wind, so it’s promising but less certain. After that, it’s a long run of onshore winds and small, messy surf through the end of July and into the 1st of August. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing unusual.
