The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get into it. Torrance Beach/Burn Out is the only show in town for the next couple of weeks, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mixed bag. We’re looking at a long stretch of mostly small, weak swell with tricky wind conditions, though there are a couple of windows that might just make it worth paddling out.
The first surfable day isn’t really until Thursday morning, August 20th. That morning we’ve got a tiny 2ft SSW swell with a 14-second period, and the wind is cross-offshore, which is a good sign for clean waves. The energy is pretty weak though, sitting at 189, so don’t expect much power. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.
Then we hit a bit of a dry spell. Friday and Saturday morning have some tiny waves, but winds are messy or glassy with next to no swell. Saturday morning, August 22nd, is glassy with a 1.0ft SW swell, but that’s hardly enough to get excited about.
The next real standout is Tuesday morning, August 25th. The wind goes glassy, the swell bumps up to 2ft from the SW with a 16-second period, and the energy climbs to 269. This is the best morning of the first week – clean, long-period lines, but still really small. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing unusual.
After that, it’s mostly poor conditions again until the end of the month. The real highlight of the whole forecast is Sunday morning, August 30th. The wind is glassy, the swell is 3ft from the SSW with a 15-second period, and the energy is up at 321. The conditions are set to be clean, and this is the standout session. Still small, but the best we’ll see.
Moving into the first week of September, the swell drops right back down, and conditions look poor each morning. The last notable morning is Thursday, September 3rd, but it’s just a 2ft SW swell with cross-on wind – nothing to write home about.
Overall, this is a quiet patch for Torrance Beach. If you’re a beginner looking for small, clean waves, the mornings of August 25th and especially August 30th are your best bets. For everyone else, it’s a waiting game.
