The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a good look at what’s coming up for Torrance Beach/Burn Out over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the start of this run is pretty darn frustrating. For the first week, from Wednesday the 15th of July right through to late on the 21st, there’s barely a session worth paddling out for. The swell is tiny, mostly around 1.3ft to 2.0ft, and the wind is just all wrong – mostly cross or cross-onshore, mucking up the surface. You’ll see a bit of a pulse in wave energy, climbing up to moderate levels on the 18th and 21st, but the wind just kills it. The water temp is a real story though – at 70.2°F, that’s a whopping 5.8°F warmer than normal, so it’s very unusual for this time of year. You’ll be swimming in a warm bath but scratching for a wave.
Now, the first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday the 22nd of July morning. We finally get some clean conditions with a nice cross-offshore breeze from the SSE. The swell is still small at 2.3ft from the SSW, but the wave energy is moderate. It’s the best of a bad bunch early on, but nothing to write home about.
The real standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Tuesday the 28th of July morning. We’ve got a 3.0ft SSW swell rolling in, but the magic is in that word “glass.” That’s right, glassy conditions with a light offshore air. That means utterly clean, silky waves. The wave energy is strong – the most organised push of the whole forecast. This is the pick of the period for sure. Get on it if you can, but be ready for crowds, as this spot gets busy often when it’s good.
The following morning, Wednesday the 29th of July, also looks promising. Another clean morning with a cross-offshore breeze from the SSE on a 2.6ft SSW swell. Wave energy is still strong. It’s not quite as perfect as Tuesday, but it’s a solid backup option.
Keep an eye on Saturday the 25th of July morning. The swell jumps to 4.3ft from the SSW with a period of 14 seconds, and the wave energy absolutely cranks! That’s strong energy. But the wind is howling directly onshore from the W at 16 mph in the afternoon. That morning will be a messy, blown-out affair, and at that size, it’s more of a challenge for experienced surfers only.
Short Range ForecastMostly dry. Warm (max 25°C on Wed afternoon, min 19°C on Fri night). Wind will be generally light. | Days 4-6 Weather SummaryMostly dry. Warm (max 22°C on Mon afternoon, min 19°C on Sat morning). Wind will be generally light. | ||||||||||||||||||||
