The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty, and I’ve been staring at the charts for 36th Street. Gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch. We’re looking at a long, empty runway. For the next 16 days, there’s basically nothing to get excited about.
The first surf that’s even worth a look doesn’t turn up until Saturday afternoon, July 18th. Even then, it’s not much. The swell is a tiny 4ft from the south, with a short period of 5 seconds. Combined energy is weak, at just 99. The water temp is a balmy 77°, which is a noticeable 4° warmer than usual for this time of year – feels like bath water. The wind goes glassy, which is a massive positive for clean surface, but the swell is just too fat and weak to do anything with.
There’s then a big gap of nothing. Tuesday morning, July 28th, offers a faint pulse. You get a 3ft swell from the SSW, but again, it’s a short period of 5 seconds. The wind is light and cross-offshore, keeping it clean, but the combined energy is still only 79. It’s “surfable,” but only just.
The rest of the window is a mix of tiny, weak swells and poor wind directions. A few mornings have offshore or glassy conditions, like Sunday, July 26th morning, with a glassy 1ft from the ESE, but there’s just no power in the water. For a beach/jetty setup like this, without any decent groundswell, you’re better off leaving the board at home.
Honestly, for this stretch, the setup looks more interesting for a kite than a paddle, if you’ve got the gear. Otherwise, it’s a blank run. The forecasts can always change, but right now, there’s nothing to recommend.
