The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get stuck into the outlook for 36th Street.
Honestly, I gotta be straight with you; the next 16 days look like a total write-off for a proper surf. There’s a bit of a tease on Saturday the 25th, but for the most part, you’re looking at a long stretch of flat, weak, and messy conditions. This is one of those rare blank runs where the ocean just isn’t cooperating.
Let’s break it down. From now through Friday the 24th, it’s virtually flat. We’re talking tiny, un-rideable waves with a combined energy barely cracking 100 (7 to 69 in the energy stakes). The winds are all over the place – cross, cross-on, and onshore – leaving the water choppy and uninviting. The only glimmer of hope comes on the morning of Saturday the 25th. The wind goes glassy, and we get a bump of 4 ft swell from the east at a short 6-second period. The energy climbs to 113 (moderate), and the description says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s the best we’ve got, but it’s for the dedicated, not for a standout session.
Then it’s right back to the doldrums. From Saturday afternoon right through to the end of the first week of August, it’s a sad story of onshore winds and tiny, weak swells. The energy levels drop back into the weak zone (well under 100), and the water stays messy. A few clean spells with offshore or glassy winds on the 30th and 31st of July, but the swell is just 0.7 ft to 1 ft. You could float a leaf on it, but not a surfboard.
The water temp anomaly says it’s about average for the time of year, but with nothing to surf, it doesn’t really matter.
This is a classic case of the forecast changing, and often it won’t stay this poor for long. But right now, if you’re looking at 36th Street, you’re better off waiting for the next swell window.
Rusty.
