The Lowdown
Rightio, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for 36th Street over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it’s gunna be a tough run. The whole 16-day window is looking pretty flat and ordinary. We’ve got a long gap of poor surf stretching from Friday 21st August right through until Wednesday 2nd September, with nothing worth paddling out for. The swell just doesn’t have any energy behind it – most days the combined energy sits around 20 to 50, which is weak. The swell direction is mostly off the SE or ESE, which isn’t ideal for this spot. It likes NE swell to really light up, so we’re not getting what it wants.
The only day that shows a little flicker of life is Wednesday 2nd September morning. That morning we’ve got a 1ft swell from the SE with a 12-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 116, which is moderate. The wind is cross-off from the N at 9 mph, so it’ll be clean. Look, it’s still tiny, and it’s from the wrong direction, but if you’re desperate for a slide, that’s your best bet. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
After that, it drops straight back into the gutter for the rest of the period. The last few days in the first week of September are all poor – small, short-period dribble with onshore or cross-onshore winds. There’s nothing that stands out as a true standout. Honestly, this is a stretch where you might be better off doing something else. If you do head out, early morning on the 2nd is your only real chance for a clean little wave.
