The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into what we’ve got on the books for 36th Street.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16-day window, it’s a pretty flat spell for 36th Street. The water temp is sitting at around 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least the water feels good. But for surf, we're looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak, and mostly messy waves. The first recommendation isn't until Tuesday the 18th of August, and even then, it’s only 2ft of short-period, low-energy SE swell (combined energy of just 33). That’s not going to do much.
The pattern is consistent: the swell stays small, rarely breaking 3ft, and the period is mostly short. The wind is a constant pain, coming from the east or south-east, giving us cross, cross-on, or onshore conditions more often than not. There are a few clean windows, like Wednesday morning the 19th and Thursday afternoon the 20th, but with wave heights barely reaching knee-high, the surf quality is still zip.
If I had to pick the one and only *slight* standout, it would be the Sunday the 30th of August. We see the combined swell energy finally climb into the moderate range at 305, with a 3ft SE swell pushing in. The wind is a moderate cross-shore from the ENE, so it won't be glassy, but it's the best we get. The swell direction is from the SE, which is the optimum direction for 36th Street. The period is 12 seconds, a nice groundswell, but keep in mind at a beach/jetty setup that can make it break a little straight.
Before that, there’s a big gap from the 18th right through to the 30th with no decent recommendations. After the 30th, the energy drops right back off into the weak range. The 2nd of September is the last day we have data, and it’s back to poor conditions again.
Summary is: don't get your hopes up. The crowd factor at 36th Street is listed as "sometimes," but with surf this poor, it'll be empty anyway. The biggest note is the 30th, but even that is a "maybe" rather than a "go." It’s mainly a lake out there.
