The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at what’s happening at 36th Street over the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, for the next week-and-a-half or so, it’s pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and mostly crummy wind. From Thursday the 20th right through to the end of August, the waves are basically flat, with heights hanging around 0.3ft to 2ft and energy readings mostly below 50 (weak). The wind is a problem too – a lot of cross, cross-on, and onshore stuff, mixing it up and making things messy. Even when it goes glassy early on the 22nd, the swell is barely 0.7ft. There are a couple of moments with clean conditions – like Monday the 24th with clean offshore WNW wind – but the swell is still tiny. It’s just not worth paddling out.

The long stretch of poor surf runs from Thursday morning right through to Monday the 31st. It’s a full run of flat days with no real standouts.

Now, there is a small blip early on Tuesday morning, September 1st. The wind drops to dead calm (0 km/h), it’s glassy, and we get a 3ft ENE swell. The combined energy jumps to 103 (moderate), so there’s a bit more life in the water. The period is only 5 seconds though – very short period, windswell stuff – but the glassy conditions will make the most of it. It’s surfable but pretty ordinary. Not a standout, just the best of a bad lot.

After that, the wind turns nasty again from the NE, blowing 18 to 22 mph with lumpy cross-chop, and the surf goes back to poor. The only other hint of life is Friday, September 4th, when the energy hits 146 (moderate) with a 3ft swell from the East at 7 seconds. But it’s cross-shore and messy.

Water temperature here is about average for the time of year. The best chance for a surf is that glassy Tuesday morning, but don’t expect much. For the rest of it, the beach setup with onshore wind and small surf might look more interesting for kite surfers than paddle surfers.

Rusty.
