The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get real about Poverty Beach for the next 16 days.
Honestly, it’s a pretty bleak stretch. For the first week and a half, there’s just nothing doing. The surf is tiny, the wind is often messy, and the whole setup is a no-go. We’re looking at a long, dry gap from the start all the way through to the morning of July 25th. That’s a solid 12 days of near-flat, poor conditions. You’ll see a few tiny bumps in there, like Thursday the 16th morning with a glassy 1 ft, but it’s attached to a puny 5-second period and weak energy (15). Not worth paddling for.
The first real glimmer of hope shows up on the morning of Saturday, July 25th. The swell finally bumps up to 3 ft from the S, which is a decent size for this spot. The wave energy is moderate (127), and the wind is a clean offshore from the NNE. The conditions are described as “surfable but very ordinary” – which is the best we’re going to get. It’s a rare break that “rarely breaks,” so even getting a few surfable waves is a small win. The problem is that with a short 6-second period, it’s going to be a bit lumpy and weak. For a spot that likes an SSE swell, this is a bit off-angle, too. It’s the standout, but only because everything else is a zero.
Then Sunday the 26th morning offers a similar story: 3 ft from the SSE with clean, offshore NNE wind at just 3 mph. It’s a little lighter in energy (66), but glassy conditions are a major positive. For a spot that rarely works, two mornings in a row is a treat.
The rest of the time after that is just more onshore wind and small, weak dribble. The 24th of July afternoon has a glassy 3 ft from the S, but it’s a last little gasp before the weekend.
Honestly, for this 16-day window, it’s a waiting game. The best you’ve got is the 25th and 26th of July mornings. Even then, keep expectations low. It’s not a total loss, but it’s close.
Rusty.
