The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the cards for our local stretch.

Well, I gotta be straight with you – this is shaping up to be a tough run. The whole 16-day window is looking like a bust for any kind of decent surf around here. We’ve got a massive gap right from the start with absolutely nothing worthwhile on offer. You’re looking at a solid stretch of flat, weak, or messy conditions all the way through to the second week of September.

We’re talking about Poverty Beach, a beach and reef setup that's exposed to an SSE swell. It's an advanced spot that rarely breaks, and this forecast isn't doing it any favours. The water temp is sitting at a touch warmer than normal at 77°, which is nice for a paddle but won't help the waves.

For the first few days – Friday the 28th right through the weekend – we've got tiny 1 ft swells from the ESE with weak energy (45 or below). The wind is all over the place, sometimes glassy, but the wave comment is "poor surf conditions" across the board. It’s just not happening.

Moving into the first week of September, the pattern doesn't change. We see some slightly bigger swells – still only 2 ft – and a period hitting 11 seconds on the 2nd of September morning, which gives a bit more shape. The energy ticks up slightly (63), and the wind is clean offshore from the NW. The comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." That’s the closest we get to a highlight, but with a score of just 1 out of 10, it’s a flat "meh," not a standout. The glassy afternoon that same day is clean but the swell collapses again.

The rest of the first week and into the second week is more of the same: tiny 0.7 ft to 1 ft swells, short periods, and poor conditions. On the 8th of September we get a moderate offshore from the NW, but the swell is still just 1 ft. The week from the 5th to the 12th is full of clean conditions but with waves barely reaching 1 ft. Even the 12th of September afternoon brings a bump to 2 ft from the S, but it's a short 5-second period with only moderate energy (47). The wind is a fresh cross-offshore, but the surf quality is still rated as poor.

Honestly, there's nothing here to get excited about. No standouts. No decent swell. With such weak consistency and tiny waves, this looks more like a stretch for a flat-water paddle than a surf. If the wind picks up strong enough, and with it being a beach setup, it might be more interesting for kite surfing than for us paddle surfers. We just have to sit this one out.

Rusty.
