The Lowdown

G’day, it’s Rusty here.

Honestly, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a proper surf around here. There’s a window coming up, but it’s not a big one, and it ain’t today. We’ve got a real quiet stretch ahead, so don’t go getting your hopes up for any magic sessions just yet.

The only real action is on Monday the 3rd. The swell shows a 7ft pulse, but it’s short-period stuff, around 8 seconds, coming out of the SSE. The morning has a cross-shore breeze with a cross-chop, so it’ll be a bit of a mess. But the afternoon is where it’s at: wind swings to a cross-off, and the report says it should be clean. You’ll find that at Loch Arbor (Loch-Arbor). It’s a sandbar, fairly consistent, but with that short period, it might be a bit walled. The combined energy reads 913, which is moderate, but it’s the only time in this whole run we get a real wave. The water temp is 75°, which is a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, so not a big deal.

After that Monday afternoon, the taps get turned off. Tuesday the 4th drops to 3ft and just gets smaller and weaker from there. The wind turns onshore, the periods drop to 6 or 7 seconds, and the energy just bottoms out. It’s a long, lean stretch. From Tuesday the 4th all the way through to Monday the 17th, there isn’t a single session worth paddling out for. The swell heights stay under 3ft, and even when the wind is offshore or glassy, there’s just no push in the water.

Now, there’s a slight uptick right at the tail end of the window. On Tuesday the 18th, we see a little bump back up to 4ft, with the swell direction shifting to SSW. The period is still short at 5 to 6 seconds, and the combined energy just barely gets back above 100, hitting 107 by the afternoon. It’s clean with a cross-off breeze, so if you’re desperate, that might be something to watch. But it’s a long way out, and I wouldn’t be making any plans on it. It’s promising, but the call is a lot less certain that far out.

So, the standout is clear: Monday afternoon, the 3rd of August, at Loch Arbor. That’s your window. It won’t be perfect, but it’s the only surf we’re getting. The rest of the week’s a write-off. Keep an eye on that Tuesday the 18th, but don’t hold your breath. It’s a slow stretch for the area, but that’s how it goes sometimes.

Rusty.
