The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gonna be straight with you – the outlook for White Crest Beach (Wellfleet) over the next couple of weeks is looking pretty grim. We’ve got a long stretch ahead with nothing really worth paddling out for. The few tiny pulses of energy that show up just don’t have the conditions to back them up. It’s one of those spells where you might be better off checking the forecasts for a change, 'cause right now there’s nothing to get excited about.
Looking at the whole period, we start off with a real flat note. On Thursday the 20th of August, we see a little bump of 2 ft swell out of the ESE, but it’s weak, with combined swell energy at just 42. The water temp is sitting at 68°F, which is about average for this time of year. The wind is offshore and light in the morning, so the surf is clean, but it’s just too small and ordinary to bother with. That afternoon the wind swings and it goes poor.
From Friday the 21st all the way through until the end of the month, it’s a rough run. Every session is either plagued by onshore or cross-onshore winds, or the swell drops to nothing. Most days have poor surf conditions with combined swell energy barely breaking 50 or 60. Even the rare glassy moment on Sunday the 23rd afternoon only gives us a knee-high 1 ft wave with a long period of 12 seconds – but the energy is just 45. It’s surfable but very ordinary.
We get a small spike in combined swell energy on Saturday the 29th of August, hitting 106. The swell is 2 ft from the SE with a period of 9 seconds. But the wind is a moderate cross-onshore, making it choppy. It’s still poor surf conditions. Same story the next day.
Moving into September, there’s one morning on Tuesday the 1st that shows a bit more size – a 4 ft swell from the north, but with a period of just 5 seconds. That’s short-period windswell, and the cross-onshore wind and choppy conditions mean it’s not surfable. After that, it’s back to tiny, weak swell and messy winds right through until Friday the 4th of September.
Honestly, there isn’t a single standout session in this 16-day window. The best we get is "surfable but very ordinary" a couple of times, and that’s it. This is one of those blank runs that happens – the sandbar set-up at White Crest just isn’t catching anything worthwhile with these wind directions and tiny swells. Keep your hopes up; forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the car.
Rusty.
