The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's get straight into it. We've got a long stretch ahead for White Crest Beach, and I gotta be honest with you, it’s gonna be a tough one for surfers. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window starting now, but the first real chance of anything ridable isn’t until late in the game. Before that, we're dealing with a major gap of weak, short-period junk and messy wind. Most days the combined wave energy is just a sad little number (low 100s and below), barely enough to knock a sea duck off its feet.

Here’s how it shakes out. Through the weekend and the whole of next week, it’s a whole lot of not much. Tiny swells (1.0 ft to 2 ft), mixed with periods that are either way too short (5-6 seconds) or coming from the wrong direction. The wind is often cross or onshore making it a choppy mess. Even when the wind goes offshore on Tuesday (25th) and Wednesday (26th) morning, the swell is just too small, around 1.0 ft to 2 ft, to get excited about. It’s the kind of day you’d paddle out just to sit on your board and stare at the horizon.

We get a little tease on Thursday the 27th morning. The water temp is a normal 69°F, the wind goes light and it's clean, and we see a combined swell energy of 103, which is a tiny step in the right direction. But the swell is still a weak 2 ft from the SE with a 9-second period. It’s technically surfable but says "very ordinary conditions." Not a standout by any stretch.

The first real interesting moment pops up on Sunday the 30th in the morning. The wind goes glassy, which is a huge plus for clean waves. Swell jumps to 4 ft, but here's the kicker: it’s from the NNE with a period of just 6 seconds. That’s short-period windswell, so don't expect any push or shape. The combined energy climbs to 133, so there's a bit of water moving, but the quality will be poor. This one is for the kites, not the logs.

Then we skip ahead. After a quiet start to September, we get a little pulse on Wednesday afternoon, 2nd September. We see a 4 ft swell from the SE, but again the period is a terrible 5 seconds. Combined energy goes up to 113, but that short period will make for steep, crumbly, onshore-friendly junk. Not great.

The best we’ve got in the whole window, and I mean the *only* real standout, comes in the early morning of Thursday, 3rd September. The swell jumps to 4 ft from the S with a combined energy of 223 (moderate energy), which is the biggest reading of the whole forecast. The period is 6 seconds, which will still be a bit short and disorganised. But here’s the kicker, the wind is cross-shore from the NNW, which will clean up the faces a little. It won’t be perfect, but at 4 ft, it’s the only time we get near a decent chest-high wave.

Overall, the water temp is around 69°F which is pretty normal for this time of year. It’s a long, quiet period. The best recommendation for a surfer is to be patient. The Thursday 3rd September morning session is the only one worth setting the alarm for. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the most energy we see. For the rest, the sandbar at White Crest Beach will be waiting, but the ocean just isn't cooperating.

Keep your stick on the roof, check the cams, and don’t hold your breath for the second week; it looks even weaker.

Rusty.
