The Lowdown
Alright, I’ll be Rusty for this one. Let’s take a look at what’s happening over the next couple weeks.
Alright, it ain’t looking pretty for the next couple weeks. This is gonna be one of those silent runs where you can pretty much leave the boards in the car. The Jetty’s our only spot, but it’s a beginner sandbar that’s fairly consistent, gets a SE swell, and is best with NW offshore winds. Even then, the next 10 days are a total write-off – poor surf conditions all the way through to the end of August.
From today, Wednesday morning the 19th, through to Saturday the 29th, it’s basically all tiny, weak, or messy. We’re looking at 1ft to 2ft of SE swell most of the time, with periods as short as 4 to 12 seconds. The combined energy is weak, often in the 13 to 49 range, so there’s nothing pushing through. Winds are mostly cross or cross-on, and there are plenty of rain showers and storm risks to ruin any chance of a clean surface. The water’s sitting at 77°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year – small comfort.
Now, on Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of August, things finally perk up just a little. On Saturday morning, we get a 2ft SE swell with a 9-second period, combined energy climbing to 73, and a nice WNW offshore wind right at 9 mph. That’s a clean, offshore morning – the best we’ll see. The afternoon stays clean with a cross-off wind. Then Sunday the 30th morning is another standout: glassy conditions, zero wind, 2ft SE swell at 9 seconds, combined energy 55. That’s a rare moment of peace, but the swell is tiny, so you’re on a longboard or just floating.
Into Monday the 31st, the energy jumps to 201 on the combined scale, but it’s a 3ft ESE swell with a 9-second period and strong cross-on winds from S at 16 mph. That’s messy, choppy, and not worth paddling out for.
The first two days of September offer a glimmer. Tuesday the 1st afternoon sees a clean cross-off wind from WSW at 9 mph, 1ft SE swell with a 12-second period – that long period groundswell (88 combined energy) will feel better, but on a sandbar it might break a bit straight. Still, clean. Then Wednesday the 2nd morning, a light cross-off from NNW at 6 mph, 2ft SE swell at 11 seconds, combined energy a solid 129 – that’s the biggest energy of the whole period. It’s clean, with a gentle offshore feel. That Wednesday morning is the pick of the whole run, but the swell’s still small.
Overall, there’s a week-long gap of nothing, then a couple of clean but small windows. If you’re keen, target Sunday the 30th morning for glass, or Wednesday the 2nd of September morning for the best energy and clean conditions. But don’t get your hopes up for anything chest-high. The area’s been quiet, and this kind of blank run isn’t unusual.
