The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s on the cards for The Jetty.
Right off the bat, the water’s sitting at 77°F – that’s much warmer than usual for this time of year, a real treat if you’re heading in.
To be straight with you, the first week or so is pretty lean. There’s a long gap with no real surf to get excited about. Sunday the 19th through to Tuesday the 22nd of July, the swell is tiny – around 1ft to 3ft – and the wind is all over the shop, mostly cross or onshore. The wave energy is weak (39 to 62), and the conditions are just poor. Not worth paddling out for.
Wednesday the 22nd of July is where things start to look a bit more interesting. The morning kicks off with a 4ft swell from the SSE, period 8 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore breeze. The wave energy jumps to 184 (moderate), which is a big step up. Then Wednesday afternoon is the standout session of the whole 16-day window. Swell builds to 5ft from the S, period 9 seconds, and the wind goes offshore from the WNW at 15 mph. That’s clean, glassy fun. The combined energy is strong at 572. This is the best on offer – a proper session for the experienced crew, but the 5ft size is still manageable for a confident intermediate. The Jetty is a sandbar, so with that period, it should have some shape, and the offshore wind will make it silky.
After that, it drops right off again. The 23rd to the 29th of July delivers nothing but small, messy waves with mostly cross or onshore winds. The swell hovers around 1ft to 2ft, and the energy is low (25 to 101). Not worth a look.
The 30th of July Thursday afternoon sees a small pulse of 4ft from the ENE, but the period is a short 5 seconds and the wind is cross-onshore at 12 mph, making for choppy, weak conditions. The 31st of July Friday morning has a similar 5ft ENE swell with a 8-second period, but again, the wind is cross-shore, so it’s not clean. The energy is moderate to strong (261 to 308), but the wind will ruin it.
The first couple of days of August don’t offer much, with small swells and average winds. Sunday the 2nd of August afternoon has a 4ft S swell with a short 5-second period, clean cross-offshore wind, but the energy is only 93 – weak. It’s surfable, but nothing special.
So, bottom line: if you’re keen for a wave, make a beeline for Wednesday afternoon, the 22nd of July. That’s the one. The rest of the run is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty.
