Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Jetty over the next 16 days.
Alright, let's get real about The Jetty. I've looked at the charts, and honestly, it's a tough stretch ahead. We've got a solid 16-day run on the cards, but the first week is a write-off. The surf is flat, the winds are messy, and the water's got some weird energy to it.
The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 77°F, which is about 5°F warmer than we'd expect for this time of year – that's a big anomaly and feels a bit strange for July.
From now through the 19th of July, it's basically a flat spell. Don't bother. The swell is tiny – we're talking 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft – with weak combined energy (15 to 7) and onshore or cross-shore winds that'll just put a chop on it. It ain't happening.
The first real pulse of surf shows up on the morning of Saturday, 20th July. We get a 3 ft S swell, period at 7 seconds, with that combined energy finally hitting a moderate 100. The wind is a light NNW, which is cross-offshore, and the conditions are clean. It's surfable, but it's not special – just the start of the run. Don't get too excited.
Things get even more interesting, and frankly, a bit gnarly, from Monday, 21st July through to Thursday, 24th July. The swell builds consistently from the S and SSE. By the morning of the 23rd, we're looking at 5 ft S swell with 247 energy, and on Thursday the 23rd afternoon it pushes 6 ft at 283 energy. The wind, though, is a persistent cross-onshore from the E and ESE, so while there's plenty of power, the surface is going to be choppy and uninviting. This is more for the experienced crew – if it's over 5 ft, it's too big for beginners. By Friday the 24th morning, it's 5 ft S swell with a whopping 475 combined energy – that's strong wave energy – but the onshore wind is still a problem.
Later in the run, Saturday 25th July, the swell holds at 4 ft from the S with moderate energy (146) and a chance of a thunderstorm. The winds ease up to a light SSE cross-onshore. It's still not clean but it's an improvement.
Honestly, the standout window might surprise you. It's the morning of Monday, 20th July. That's when we get that first 3 ft S swell, with the light cross-offshore wind from the NNW and clean conditions. The combined energy is 100, so it's weak but it's the cleanest surf of the whole run. The Jetty is a sandbar, fairly consistent, but the crowds can be a thing sometimes. The swell direction is SE, which is the optimum, so the banks should work. It's a beginner-friendly spot, but this swell size is about right for everyone. It's not a classic stand-out, but it's the best of a tough bunch.
After that, it’s back to choppy, onshore wind slop through the end of the month. The final few days from the 25th onward drop back to small, weak, and messy.
So, to sum it up: forget the next week. Mark your calendar for Sunday, 20th July, early. That's your clean shot. After that, it’s for the die-hards and the big-wave chargers in onshore chop.
Rusty.
