The Lowdown
G'day, Rusty here.
Look, I’m gonna level with you – the next 16 days are a tough watch for surf at The Jetty. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak, and usually messy conditions. After a bit of a flat start, the first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Monday, July 20th, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about.
We kick off the period with a run of very small surf. Tuesday the 14th through Sunday the 19th is mostly 1 ft to 3 ft of short-period windswell. The wind is often cross or cross-off, which keeps it clean at times, but the wave energy is pitiful – struggling to get above 66 on the combined scale. It’s really just not worth paddling out.
Then we get a glimmer. Monday morning, July 20th, is the pick of the whole outlook. The swell bumps up a touch to 3 ft from the SSE, and crucially, the wind goes glassy. That means the surface will be like a mirror. The combined energy hits 91, which is still in the weak category, but it's the most we’ll see for a while. It’s surfable, but the comment says “very ordinary conditions” – so keep your expectations in check. The Jetty is a sandbar, and the swell direction is a decent match for its optimum from the SE, so it should wrap in okay.
Later that same Monday afternoon, the wind picks up to 15 mph from the SSW, chopping things up again.
After that brief highlight, we slip back into a mediocre pattern. From Tuesday July 21 right through to Wednesday July 29, the swell hovers between 2 ft and 3 ft. The wave energy mostly sits between 52 and 75 – weak stuff. There is a flash of energy on Friday July 24 and Saturday July 25, with the combined energy jumping to 164 and then 204, but the swell height is only 2 ft to 3 ft. That energy is coming from very long period swells (13 seconds on Friday afternoon and 11 seconds on Saturday morning), which at a beach break like The Jetty often means the waves stand up a bit too straight and close out.
The only real standout is Monday morning, July 20. The glassy wind is a dream, but the swell is tiny. If you’re desperate for a paddle, that’s your window. Everything else is flat, small, or blown out. The water is sitting at 76°F, which is about 4°F warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s notably warm, so at least you won’t need a thick wetsuit.
