Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Jetty over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are a tough watch for anyone looking for a wave. The Jetty is all we’ve got on the map, and it’s a sandbar spot that’s really only for beginners at the best of times. But for this whole stretch, the surf is just not happening. The forecast shows a long run of poor conditions, with hardly any swell and the wind crewed up onshore most days.
Right from Sunday, 12 July, it’s marginal. We’re looking at a weak 3ft E swell at 5 seconds, which is short period, and the wind is cross-on at 12 mph. The combined energy is only 44 – that’s weak. The water is sitting at 76°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, almost 4°F above average, so that’s unusual. But the surf is just flat and messy. It’s a no-go.
Monday and Tuesday stay tiny, with swell below 2ft and the wind still onshore or cross-shore. The energy is weak, never cracking 50. Wednesday morning on 15 July cleans up a bit with a cross-offshore wind, but the swell is a pathetic 1ft. It’s a clean ripple, not a wave you can ride.
We hit a real gap from Thursday 16 July all the way through to Sunday 20 July. The swell drops to 0.7ft or even 0.3ft, with a few glassy moments but zero push. The energy is in the teens – barely a bump. If you’re a kite surfer, the stronger onshore winds on 19 July (22 mph) might look interesting, but for paddle surfing, it’s a total blank.
Then on Tuesday 21 July, we get a bit of a pulse. The swell bumps up to 4ft to 4ft from the south, with a short 6-second period. The combined energy hits 107 (moderate) and 116 – the only real energy in the whole forecast. But the wind is cross-on at 12-19 mph, making it lumpy and choppy. It’s a poor surf day. For a beginner spot like The Jetty, 4ft with that wind is just messy.
The rest of the run from 22 July to 27 July is back to tiny, weak swell, mostly under 2ft, with onshore winds. There’s a glassy moment on the morning of 23 July and again on 24 July afternoon, but with 1ft SE swell at 9 seconds (longer period, but no height), it’s just a millpond look. The energy is in the 30s and 40s – weak.
So, truth is, there’s nothing to recommend here. For a stretch this long with no decent swell, it’s a tough one. The Jetty is fairly consistent for small stuff, so it’s a bit of a dry spell – but forecasts can change. Keep an eye on it, but for now, the boards are staying in the car.
Rusty.
