The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this outlook for The Jetty is a tough one. Over the next 16 days, there’s just nothing that’s going to get the heart pumping. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions with barely a ripple of surfable energy. It’s a real flat spell for this sandbar.
Let’s walk through it. Starting Monday the 17th into the weekend, we’re looking at tiny swells, mostly around 1 to 2 feet, with short periods. The water temp on Monday afternoon is sitting at 78°, which is a solid 4° warmer than normal – a notable spike. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, keeping things messy. The combined swell energy is weak, generally sitting in the teens and twenties, meaning there’s no punch behind it.
Friday the 21st and Saturday the 22nd see a slight bump in size to about 3 feet, but the period is a desperate 4 to 6 seconds, and the wind is cross or onshore, so expect lumpy, weak waves. Sunday the 23rd goes glassy in the afternoon with a 0.5-foot, 12-second period – that’s a long period for such a tiny wave; it’ll be a glassy ankle-slapper. The energy is still nothing.
The only two sessions that even rate a mention are Monday the 24th morning and Friday the 28th. On the 24th, we get a 2-foot swell from the SSE with a 6-second period and light offshore (NNW 6 mph). The combined energy hits 56 – still very weak. On the 28th, a 2-foot swell from the SE, 10-second period, with a 9 mph offshore (NW). The energy climbs to 92, but even that’s weak. These are just ordinary, surfable days, but nothing worth planning around.
Beyond that, from the 29th of August through to the 1st of September, it’s back to tiny, choppy mush.
Overall, the best on offer is Friday the 28th morning, with that offshore wind and a touch of period, but don’t expect any shape – it’s a beginner-level, knee-high dribbler. For a sandbar, the lack of any proper groundswell and poor wind windows means there are no standouts. It’s a long, quiet run on the cards.
Rusty.
