The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty. Let's have a look at what the next couple of weeks are serving up for The Jetty. It's a bit of a quiet stretch ahead, to be honest. The water is a toasty 77°, which is a fair bit warmer than we'd expect for this time of year, a real anomaly that's about 4° above normal.
We're kicking off on Saturday, the 18th of July, with no real surf to speak of. The morning is a write-off, with a tiny 0.3ft swell and rain showers messing things up. The afternoon brings a 4ft southerly swell, but it's got a shockingly short period of just 5 seconds and a cross-onshore wind, so it's all chop and no chance.
Sunday the 19th looks a little better, but still nothing to get excited about. The morning has a clean 3ft southerly swell with a light offshore breeze, so you might find a grovelly one. The afternoon goes glassy, but the swell drops to 2ft.
Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st are pretty much a bust, with small, weak swells and onshore or cross-shore winds. Then on Wednesday the 22nd, we see the biggest swell of the forecast. The morning is a messy 5ft southerly with a cross-shore wind, but the afternoon looks interesting. We get a 8ft southerly swell with a 9-second period. The combined energy is strong, hitting 1216. But that's a lot of water for a sandbar break, and with a cross-shore wind, it won't be pretty. It'll be a big, chunky, and probably closed-out mess for all but the most seasoned crew. This is more of a kite-surfing show than a paddle session.
Thursday the 23rd offers a clean-up, with offshore winds and a 3ft SSE swell. It's surfable, but ordinary.
From Friday the 24th right through to the 2nd of August, it's a long run of poor conditions. The swell stays small, mostly under 3ft, and the winds are rarely in our favour. There's a consistent run of small SSE or SE swells, but they're plagued by cross-on or onshore winds. The only real highlight is a glassy morning on Sunday the 26th, but with a 3ft, 6-second swell, it's a real grovel.
So, to be straight up, the best window is that Wednesday the 22nd afternoon, if you're an expert looking for a big, ugly challenge, or maybe the clean, small morning of Thursday the 23rd for a quiet, frustrating paddle. Otherwise, it's a long stretch of flat and messy. Hang in there.
