The Lowdown
Alright, this is a bit of a tough one to call. For the next sixteen days, the surf is looking pretty ordinary for the most part. We're not seeing any big, clean swells lining up, so you’ll want to keep your expectations in check. There’s a bit of a quiet spell to start, with only small, choppy waves on offer.
Let’s talk about the best you’ll get. The standout moment, as far as it goes, is Monday morning, July 20th, at The Jetty. The water is a balmy 77°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a nice little bonus. We’ve got a 3ft swell from the SSE, with a period of 9 seconds. The real kicker is the wind: it’s dead flat calm, glassy. That’s about as clean as a wave gets. The combined swell energy is moderate at 106, so there’s a bit of push behind it. It’s a beginner-friendly sandbar that’s fairly consistent, and with the glassy conditions, it’ll be the best ride of the window. Sunday afternoon, July 19th, is a backup option with a 3ft SSE swell, a cross-offshore wind, and clean conditions, but the energy is a touch weaker at 88.
Before that, the rest of the first week is pretty much a write-off. Thursday July 16th and Friday July 17th have small, weak swell with poor wind, making for messy, choppy surf. Saturday July 18th sees a 4ft S swell in the afternoon, but it’s a risk of thunderstorms with a cross-onshore wind, so it’ll be a bumpy mess.
After that Monday glassy morning, the quality drops off again. The wind picks up on Monday afternoon, turning the surf choppy. Tuesday through to the end of the month brings small, inconsistent waves with mostly cross-shore or onshore winds. There’s a brief moment of cleaner conditions on Sunday July 26th with a fresh offshore breeze from the WNW, but the swell is only 2ft to 2ft, so it’s barely breaking. The energy is low, in the 40s and 50s.
The second week, from July 23rd onwards, is all tiny, weak, and generally messy. Not much to get excited about.
So, if you’ve got a paddle, your best bet is to be on the water Monday morning, July 20th. It’s not a classic, but it’s the cleanest wave we’ll see.
