The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the outlook for The Jetty over the next 16 days is pretty grim. There’s no surf worth paddling out for right now, and it’s going to be a long, flat run for a while.
We’ve got a real dry spell on our hands. From now until around the 30th of August, the waves are tiny, the energy is weak, and the conditions are just plain messy. You’ll be looking at waves barely hitting 2 ft with combined swell energy struggling into the double digits (mostly below 50). The wind is mostly cross or cross-onshore, chopping things up. It’s not worth your time.
Then there’s a bit of a shift from the 31st of August into the first few days of September. We finally see some longer period groundswell roll in, with periods hitting 15 to 19 seconds, and the energy starts to climb into the 70s and 80s. The swell direction is still from the SE, which is the optimum direction for The Jetty. But even then, the wave heights are still only around 1 ft to 1 ft. It’s surfable, but ordinary. The wind does clean up nicely on the morning of the 1st of September with a light offshore from the NW, and again on the 3rd of September with a light cross-offshore breeze.
However, even on these cleaner days, the tiny size means it’s really just a bump. The bigger period on the 19-second stuff is interesting, but with such a small wave, it’s hard to get excited. For a beginner, this is about as flat as it gets. For anyone else, it’s a total bust.
Honestly, looking at the whole 16 days, there’s no standout. The forecast confidence is high on this being a poor period for surf. It’s not often we see such a blank run here, but when the stars don’t align, they really don’t. Keep your board in the bag and watch the forecasts.
Rusty.
