The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Look, I’m going to level with you straight up: the next couple of weeks are a tough watch for The Jetty. That’s our only option on the table, and the swell is just… absent. There’s nothing showing up that’s going to get the heart rate up. We’ve got a long, quiet stretch ahead.
The water’s sitting at a noticeably warm 78° here at The Jetty – feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, about 4° above average. That’s nice for a swim, but not much else.
Sunday the 16th kicks off with a weak 3 ft swell from SSE, period a short 4 seconds. The combined energy is a weak 21. With a 19 mph S wind making it cross-on, it’s just lumpy and poor.
Monday the 17th and Tuesday the 18th are barely any better. The swell drops to 2 ft with periods around 6 to 7 seconds. The mornings do clean up with offshore or cross-off winds – Monday morning has a WNW breeze, Tuesday morning a NNW breeze – so the water will look smooth, but the waves are too small to do much with. Energy values are in the 30s to low 50s.
Wednesday the 19th morning has a tiny 2 ft swell from SE, period stretching a bit to 10 seconds, energy at 47. A light WSW cross-off keeps it clean, but it’s just ankle-biters.
From Thursday the 20th all the way through to Saturday the 23rd, it’s a total dud. Swell heights hang around 0.7 ft to 2 ft, raw energy values stuck in the teens, 20s, and 30s. Most of it is cross-on or onshore junk.
Sunday the 23rd offers a 0.7 ft swell with a surprisingly long 13 second period from ESE, energy at 32. The light cross-shore wind on Sunday morning will keep the surface glassy, but with that tiny size, you’re better off grabbing a coffee.
Then there’s another dead stretch until around Thursday the 27th. That morning we finally see a bump – 3 ft from ENE, period 6 seconds, and the energy jumps to 157. A light NNE cross-off breeze keeps it clean. We’re looking at surfable but very ordinary conditions. It’s the best we get, but that’s not saying much. The Jetty is a sandbar, fairly consistent, and the optimum swell is from SE, but this east-northeast angle isn’t ideal.
Friday the 28th has a similar story – a clean 2 ft from SE, period 10 seconds, energy at 71, with a 12 mph NNW offshore wind. Again, clean but small.
After that, we drift back into tiny, clean but powerless waves through the end of the month and into the 31st. The wind stays light to moderate offshore or cross-off, but with swell sizes of 1 ft, there’s nothing to ride.
To be honest, the only spot worth a look across this whole 16-day window is The Jetty on the morning of Thursday the 27th. The water will be glassy thanks to that light NNE wind, but the swell is small and the direction isn't perfect. It’s a weak option for the desperate.
The rest of it? A long, flat stretch with no real surf. Sometimes that’s just how it goes around here.
Rusty.
