Table - best surf conditions forecast for The Jetty over the next 16 days.
Alright, let me tell you how it is. I’ve been staring at the charts for The Jetty, and if you’re looking to get wet over the next 16 days, you’re gonna need a lot of patience. To be honest, the whole period is a tough one. There’s a long gap from the start of the forecast right through until the very end of the third week where the surf just isn’t worth paddling out for. We’re looking at a stretch of small, weak, and messy conditions with barely enough energy to push a log along.
The first real shot of something that looks like a wave shows up on the 21st of July, but even then, it’s got problems. That morning, a new swell rolls in from the SSE at 7ft, but it’s a short period 8 second wind swell. The combined energy is strong, hitting 512, but don’t let that fool you. The wind is a cross-shore breeze from the SSW at 12 mph, so it’ll be lumpy and cross-chop. That 7ft is getting into expert territory, so if you’re a beginner, sit this one out. The wave comment says “poor surf conditions” and the score is a flat zero. The swell direction is SSE, but the break’s optimum swell direction is SE, so it’s not a perfect match.
The afternoon of the 21st drops a bit to 6ft from the same SSE direction, but the wind swings more onshore from the S at 16 mph, making it choppy. The energy is still high at 385, but it’s not clean. Honestly, with these conditions, the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The 22nd of July sees the swell drop to 4ft from the SE, period still 8 seconds. The morning has a moderate cross-shore wind from the SSW at 16 mph, and the energy is 165 (moderate). The afternoon gets windier, 19 mph from the SSW, making it fresh and lumpy with energy up to 260.
The 23rd and 24th of July are back to small, weak energy, with the swell dropping to 2ft and below, and the wind staying cross or cross-on. Nothing to get excited about. The early part of the forecast, from the 9th through the 20th, is a total write-off: tiny waves, poor wind, and no energy to speak of.
The water temperature at The Jetty on the morning of the 9th was 77°, which is 5° warmer than usual. That’s a very unusual anomaly for this time of year.
So, the standout? There isn’t one. The best you can hope for is the morning of the 21st of July if you’re an expert and you don’t mind lumpy, short-period swell. But it’s a long shot.
Rusty.
