Right, Rusty here again. Let’s talk The Jetty in feet and Fahrenheit.
First few days through the weekend are flat out depressing. Tiny little bumps, combined energy in the teens or low twenties – basically nothing doing. The water is warm for the season: 74°F, which is a good 4°F above normal for this time of year.
Monday the 7th morning shows a 2ft wave from the east with a 6-second period and weak energy (33). Clean off the land, but it’s just too small to paddle for.
The real standout is Friday the 10th of July afternoon. We get 3ft from the south, 7-second period, energy at 92. The wind goes offshore from the WNW at around 12 mph, cleaning the surface right up. The Jetty is a sandbar break, it breaks fairly consistently, and crowds can be a thing here sometimes. The swell direction isn’t dead-on optimum from the southeast, but the wind makes it the best session of the whole outlook.
Monday the 13th morning has a 3ft pulse from the east, but with only a 5-second period the waves will be weak and crumbly. Offshore wind again (NW at 12 mph), energy only 79. It’s rideable, just not special.
The biggest swell shows up Friday the 17th afternoon – 5ft from the south, 6-second period, energy jumping to 155 (moderate). But the wind is a fresh cross-onshore at 19 mph, turning it into a choppy, lumpy mess. That one’s better suited for a kite than a paddle board.
Then Saturday the 18th morning cleans up with 3ft from the south-southeast at 8 seconds, cross-offshore wind from the west-northwest at 12 mph, energy at 111. Clean looking, but it’s deep in the second week.
Best bet: Friday the 10th afternoon for that sweet offshore glass. Saturday the 18th morning as the backup. Everything else is either too small, too lumpy, or just plain flat.
Rusty.
