The Lowdown
Right, I’ve had a look at the charts and the only break on offer for the next 16 days is The Jetty. And to be straight up with you, it’s looking like a total write-off. Not a single wave worth paddling out for across the entire period.
The Jetty is a sandbar setup, fairly consistent for the area, and it likes a swell out of the SE. But the numbers just aren’t there. From Friday the 21st of August right through to Saturday the 5th of September, every single session is rated as poor surf conditions. It’s a long, barren run of flat, weak, or messy energy.
The combined swell energy never gets out of double digits, topping out at a meagre 65, but more often sitting in the low 20 to 40 range - that’s weak energy, no two ways about it. Swell heights hover between 0.7 ft and at best 2 ft, with periods mostly short to mid-range, rarely getting above 11 seconds to give you any sort of push. Even a few days with glassy or light offshore winds, like Monday the 24th in the morning with a glassy WNW 3 mph and a 1.0 ft swell, just can’t make anything of it. There’s nothing to work with.
The water temperature is running at 79°F, which is a staggering 5°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, but it doesn’t help the surf one bit.
If you’re a beginner, the tiny swell size isn’t a danger, but it’s so weak there’s nothing to ride. For everyone else, this is a flat spell. A blank run like this happens here; it’s not unusual for the area. Sometimes the ocean just goes to sleep. We can only hope the forecasts change for the better.
