The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Rat Beach. It’s a pretty quiet picture for the next two weeks, so don’t go getting too excited just yet.
Right off the bat, the water is sitting at 71°F, which is a solid 6°F warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s pretty unusual, so you’ll be in for a pleasant dip if you do get in.
We’ve got a few tiny windows of rideable surf, but nothing that’s going to get your heart pumping. The best of a very average bunch is this Friday morning, the 17th of July. We’ve got a tiny 1ft swell from the southwest with a 14-second period, but the wind is light and offshore from the SSE, keeping things clean. The combined energy is weak (74), so it’s a real knee-biter. Still, for a beginner, it’s surfable.
Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th see a slight bump to 2ft from the same southwest direction, with a very long 18-second period. The energy picks up to moderate (252 and 259), but the wind is cross-offshore, keeping it clean. For a reef break, that long period could mean it’s breaking a bit too straight, but it’s the best wave quality on offer all week. Saturday morning is your real standout here.
After that, from Monday the 20th of July right through to the end of the month, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. The swell drops off, the wind swings onshore from the west, and the energy is mostly weak. There are a few mornings with clean, flat conditions, but nothing worth paddling out for. We’re talking about a solid 11-day gap with no real recommendations.
The very end of the period, on Tuesday the 28th of July, shows a bit of a pulse with a 3ft swell from the southwest and a long 17-second period, and the energy is strong (636). But the wind is cross-on from the west, making it lumpy. It’s a tease. Wednesday the 29th and Thursday the 30th have similar stories – a little bit of swell but the wind ruins it.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for a paddle, your best bet is Saturday morning the 18th or Sunday morning the 19th. For a reef break, the long period might give you a few clean lines. Just keep your expectations on the floor. For everything else, it’s a kite session if the wind picks up, ‘cause the paddle surfing is a write-off.
Rusty.
