G’day, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with ya—looking at the 16-day window for Rat Beach, it’s a tough stretch. This is an inconsistent reef setup that rarely fires, and this run is no exception. The first few days are a write-off with tiny, short-period slop and cross-shore winds. After that, there’s a long gap of very poor surf conditions all the way through to the second week. The energy is weak (combined energy values mostly under 100), and the swell direction is from the west and southwest, which ain’t the optimum NW direction this break likes. It’s not looking good for paddle surfing at all.
Things do get a little interesting toward the end of the 18th of July. On Saturday morning, we finally see a bump in energy (combined 292) with a 2ft southwest swell at an 18-second period—that’s a long-period groundswell, which will bring proper shape and longer lulls. Winds are gentle offshore from the southeast, so it’ll be clean. But the swell’s still only 2ft, so it’s tiny, and the break is rated for beginners and inconsistent, so don’t expect much. It’s the only real standout in the whole outlook, but it’s a marginal one—just a glimmer of hope after 11 days of nothing. Crowds are possible here.
Water temp is about average for this time of year. Nothing unusual to report there.
So yeah, it’s a flat spell with one half-decent morning on July 18th. For the rest, you’d be better off checking other spots, or taking up kite surfing on those choppier days, especially when the westerly wind picks up and the swell’s small. Forecasts can change though—fingers crossed.
Rusty.
