The Lowdown
Alright, let’s talk shop in feet and knots.
This is a lean 16-day forecast for Rat Beach, and I won’t sugarcoat it – the surf is tiny and the wind is a pain most days. Water temp’s about 70°, a touch above normal for now, so it’s not too chilly while you’re sitting out there.
Rat Beach is a little reef break that’s more for beginners, but it’s inconsistent and only works sometimes. It likes swell from the NW, but we’re mostly gettin’ small SW and W stuff that doesn’t line up well.
Thursday, August 20th morning is your best early call: 1ft from the SW, clean with a light cross-off breeze. Weak energy (80), but you can get a few. That afternoon, the wind turns onshore and it’s game over.
From Friday the 21st through Tuesday the 26th of August, forget it. The swell stays between 1ft and 2ft, and the wind is mostly cross-on with chop. Energy bumps up a little on Monday and Tuesday the 25th (216), but the wind ruins any chance of clean waves.
First real standout is Wednesday morning, August 26th: 3ft from the west, short period (7 seconds), but the wind is light cross-offshore, so it’ll be clean. Energy is weak (85), but it’s the best we’ve seen. Thursday morning the 27th is similar – 3ft, clean, and light wind.
Friday morning, August 28th, has offshore wind from the SE with 2ft swell but a longer 11-second period – more push and shape. The energy is still low (57), but the clean conditions make it worth a paddle. Friday afternoon is even more interesting: 2ft from the SW with a 13-second period and light cross-off wind. At a reef spot, that longer period could actually line up a nice little wave.
Then it’s back to tiny, messy, or onshore until Monday morning, September 1st: 2ft from the west with glassy conditions. That’s a rare, flat-calm moment – a few clean little rides for the early bird. Energy is low (63), but glassy is glassy.
Wednesday morning, September 2nd, has a 2ft SW swell with a long 16-second period, but the wind is cross-on and choppy – not worth it. Thursday morning, September 3rd, is another clean window: 4ft from the west, offshore SE wind, and moderate energy (116). That’s probably the best of the second week, but still small.
Friday morning, September 4th, closes it out with 3ft from the west, clean and light cross-off wind.
Your best bets: Wednesday morning August 26th and Friday morning August 28th. The glassy Monday September 1st is a dark horse. Everything else is small and choppy. Pick your windows wisely.
Rusty.
