Table - best surf conditions forecast for Rat Beach over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer at Rat Beach over the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty bleak run. We’re looking at a solid stretch of tiny, weak surf. The water temp is sitting right about average for this time of year, nothing weird there. For the first four days, from Saturday the 11th through to Tuesday the 14th, you’re looking at flat spells and poor surf; the swell energy is barely a whisper (values between 2 and 70). Honestly, not worth paddling out.
Things start to *look* a little more hopeful from Wednesday the 15th onwards. The swell ticks up to a consistent 1 ft to 2 ft coming from the SW, with the combined energy climbing into the moderate range (181 to 268). The period is a decent 16-19 seconds, so there’s some proper groundswell energy in the water, but it’s short-period enough to break okay here. The catch? The wind is a real lottery. You’ll get some clean mornings with light cross-off or offshore breezes, but the afternoons are almost always chopped out by a cross-onshore.
The standout for the whole period, and the only real window to get excited about, is the morning of Saturday the 18th. We’ve got the best of the swell – 2 ft from the SW (18 seconds) – with a gentle offshore SSE wind at 9 mph. The energy is solid (254), and the light offshore will keep the reef line clean and glassy. It’s a beginner-friendly reef break, so the 2 ft is perfect for learning, but it’s *inconsistent*, so don’t expect a wave every minute. Also, crowds are possible here, so get in early.
The next morning, Sunday the 19th, also looks okay with light cross-off winds and the same size swell, but the energy is slightly lower. Through the second week, from the 20th onwards, the swell drops off a cliff again, dropping to 1.0 ft to 1 ft and the period goes short (5-6 seconds). The combined energy plummets back into the weak range (4-119). It’s a long, flat gap.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate for a paddle, the mornings of the 18th and 19th of July are your best bet. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the cleanest little window we’ve got.
Rusty.
