The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s call it like it is: the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and frustrating around here. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak swell with hardly any energy behind it. The water’s sitting at about 70.7°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least that’s not weird.
We’re looking at a real lull right from the start. Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th have almost nothing – just 0.3ft of south swell with a long period, but the energy is barely a whisper (5). It’s just not enough to push a surfable wave. Sunday morning the 19th is still tiny, but by Sunday afternoon we finally see a little bump: 2.6ft from the south, period drops to 7 seconds, and the energy climbs to 73. It’s still poor, though. The wind is cross-offshore, so it’s clean, but the swell is just too small and weak.
Monday the 20th morning is glassy – zero wind – with 2.0ft south swell, but the energy is only 46. It’s pretty, but not really surfable. That pattern of tiny, low-energy swell continues right through the middle of the week. Tuesday the 21st gets a little choppy with cross-onshore wind, and the period drops to 4-5 seconds, making it a complete mess.
Now, there is one moment that stands out. Wednesday the 22nd. We get a solid pulse of swell: 4.9ft building to 5.6ft by the afternoon, from the south, with a period of 9-10 seconds. The energy jumps to 335 in the morning and then 524 in the afternoon – that’s moderate to strong wave energy. The wind is cross-offshore and clean. This is the best-looking part of the whole forecast. For North Pier (Narragansett), that’s a decent size, but it’s not too big for intermediates. It’s a sheltered spot and the optimum swell direction is from the east, so this southerly swell might not wrap in perfectly, but with that much energy, it should still produce some fun, clean waves. Just be aware it can get crowded here sometimes.
After that Wednesday spike, things drop back down. Thursday the 23rd morning has 3.3ft south swell, period 9 seconds, energy 148, with clean offshore wind from the west. It’s surfable, but ordinary. Friday the 24th through the end of the month and into August 1st is more of the same: tiny waves, mostly under 3ft, with low energy. The wind is often clean or glassy, but there’s just no push. The long gap from Thursday the 24th right through to the end of the forecast period is a real bummer – day after day of nothing worth paddling out for.
So, the bottom line: your one true standout is Wednesday the 22nd. That’s the day to clear your schedule. Everything else in this 16-day window is either flat, weak, or just not worth the effort. It’s a tough run, but that’s the way it goes sometimes.
