Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’ve got a 16-day run ahead, and it’s looking pretty flat for the most part. The first proper surf recommendation isn’t coming in until Thursday the 2nd of July, and even then, it’s barely a whisper. From there, we’ve got a long stretch of tiny, poor surf conditions all the way through to the end of the period. It’s a real bummer, but these blank runs happen around here sometimes.
The only break in the mix is North Pier (Narragansett). This spot is a sheltered little nook, and it’s fairly consistent for what it is, but the swell just isn’t showing up. The water temp is sitting at about 70°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s one small comfort if you’re just having a splash.
Let’s walk through it. On Thursday the 2nd, we’ve got a tiny 0.3 ft swell from the south with a 9-second period, and a moderate southwest cross-off breeze. The combined energy is next to nothing (4). It’s clean, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a ride.
Friday the 3rd offers a brief, tiny flicker of hope in the morning with a 2 ft south swell, but the period is a short 6 seconds, meaning weak, crumbly waves. The wind is offshore from the WNW at 15 km/h, so it’s clean, but the energy is still poor (31). The afternoon drops right back down to 0.3 ft.
The rest of the first week and into the second is a monotonous grind of 0.3 ft to 2 ft south and southeast swells. Most of the time the wind is cross-offshore or light, keeping the surface clean, but there’s just no power behind it. The combined energy rarely climbs past the low 70s. There’s a slight lift around the 7th and 8th with swell hitting 3 ft, but the period is a woeful 5 to 6 seconds, and the wind is cross-on or onshore, making it choppy and messy.
Even the later part of the run, from the 11th of July through the 16th, sees the same story: clean conditions with light offshore or cross-off breezes, but the swell is stuck around 2 ft to 2 ft. The biggest combined energy we see is 78 on the 16th, but with a southwest cross-off and a weak 8-second period, it’s still not worth paddling out for.
So, what are we really looking at? Honestly, there are no standouts here. There is no one day that jumps out as a “go.” The best on offer is probably the morning of Friday the 3rd, or maybe a session on Sunday the 12th when we see a 2 ft south swell with a light northwest cross-off breeze and clean conditions, but even that is a long shot. The energy is just too weak across the board.
This is a stretch where you might want to break out the longboard or just wait for the forecast to change. If the wind is strong and the surf is that gutless, the setup at North Pier is more interesting for a kite session than for paddle surfing.
Keep your hopes up – it doesn’t stay poor for long around here.
