Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I gotta be straight with you – this outlook for North Pier in Narragansett is a tough one. We’re looking at a real dry spell stretching across the entire 16-day window. There’s a long gap with no real surf on offer starting now, and it doesn’t look like it’ll break until about the second week of July.
The overall pattern is flat and poor. The combined energy of the swells is weak, often less than 100 (4-97 range), and the direction is mostly from the SE or S, which isn’t the optimum easterly swell this sheltered spot prefers. The wind is a mess most of the time, with heavy rain and onshore or cross-onshore gusts making things lumpy and choppy.
Even the one day that shows a little more push – Tuesday, July 14th – isn’t a standout. The morning sees a bump to 3 ft swell from the S with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy hits 111 (moderate). The wind is cross-off, so it’ll be clean. But it’s not enough to get excited about; it’s poor surf, really. The water temperature is sitting at 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for it.
For the rest of the period, the swell drops off again. We’re talking ankle-snappers of 0.3 ft to 1.0 ft with clean but useless conditions. The best you can hope for is a few clean, crumbly waves on the 10th of July with a light offshore from the WNW, but the swell is just 0.3 ft. It’s a paddling and tanning session, not a surf session.
There are no standouts here. If you’re desperate, the 14th is your best bet, but it’s a real beggars-can’t-be-choosers situation. The setup is more interesting for a kiteboarder than a paddle surfer for most of this run. Hang tight, the forecasts can always change.
Rusty.
