The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the stretch ahead for North Pier in Narragansett. I’ll be straight with you – this is a tough one. The whole 16-day window is a real struggle for decent waves. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first bit of surf worth getting out of bed for isn’t until Wednesday, July 22nd. We’ve got a bump in the morning – 6ft swell rolling in from the south with a period of 8 seconds. It’s not a classic groundswell, but it’s got some moderate energy (415). The problem is that the wind is a cross-off from the southwest at 16 mph. It’s clean, but that’s a bit of a punch. This is about as good as it gets for the whole period, and it’s only a “marginal” call. For an intermediate spot like this, it’s rideable but far from epic. The afternoon stays the same size but with a slightly longer period (9 secs) and still that cross-off wind, but the wave comment says “poor” – so I’d take the morning if you’re keen.
After that, it’s a long, slow slide. Thursday the 23rd has 5ft of south swell but the wind is onshore or cross, making it choppy. Friday the 24th is smaller, and by Saturday the 25th we’re down to 2ft with messy conditions. Honestly, the rest of the run from there into early August is a flat, wind-blown mess. Swell drops to 1ft, periods are short, and the wind is either cross-on or onshore nearly every day. There’s a day or two around the 30th of July where it goes glassy, but the swell is barely a ripple – 1ft with a 7-second period.
The standout here is really just that Wednesday morning, July 22nd. It’s the only day with any real push. The swell is from the south, which lines up with the optimum east direction for this sheltered spot, so it’s a decent fit. But it’s not a classic. The break is fairly consistent, which is a small mercy, but don’t expect waves of the year.
If you’re a beginner, the 6ft might be a bit much on that day, and the wind is stiff. For experts, it’s going to be a grovel at best. The rest of the window? Kite surfers might find more to work with on the windy days, because the paddle surfing is a no-go.
Rusty, signing off.
