The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the menu for North Pier in Narragansett over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the first few days are a total write-off. We're looking at tiny, pretty much non-existent surf from Thursday the 16th through to Sunday the 19th, with swell heights barely scraping 0.3ft. The combined wave energy is laughable, down in the single digits (1 to 6). The wind is mostly cross-off or offshore, which would be a treat if there was any swell to ride, but there isn't. It's a frustrating start, a real "look but don't touch" situation.
We finally get a pulse on Monday the 20th. The morning shows a small bump of 3ft from the south, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy jumps to a moderate 105. The real kicker here is the wind: it's glassy. Dead calm. That's a rare gift for North Pier, a sheltered spot that likes a bit of south in the swell. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there. It's surfable, but the conditions are described as "very ordinary," so don't expect fireworks. The afternoon turns to a cross-off breeze, but the energy drops a bit (96).
The surf quality stays pretty ordinary through the rest of the week. Tuesday the 21st is a washout thanks to rain and a cross-shore wind messing up the 2ft and 3ft south swell. Wednesday the 22nd builds a bit, with the morning showing 5ft from the south with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy hits a moderate 234, but the wind is cross-off, so it'll be clean, just not great. Thursday the 23rd and Friday the 24th are a write-off again with onshore and cross-onshore winds chopping up the 3ft to 4ft south swells. The energy is still moderate (119 to 209), but with that wind direction, North Pier is going to be a mess.
Saturday the 25th and Sunday the 26th offer a glimmer. Saturday morning has 3ft and a light cross-off breeze, but it's still "very ordinary." The real standout, however, is Sunday the 26th. The morning session shows 6ft from the south with a period of 8 seconds and a combined energy of 382, which is the strongest we've seen all forecast. The wind is a gentle cross-off from the SSW, keeping things clean. This is your best bet. It's still not a classic, but it's the biggest and cleanest swell in the window. It's a bit on the bigger side for beginners at 6ft, but for intermediates, it's game on. The afternoon drops a bit to 5ft and the wind goes cross-shore, so the morning is the window.
The second week is a bit of a letdown. From Monday the 27th through to Friday the 31st, we're back to small, messy, or onshore conditions. Monday the 27th has a gusty cross-shore wind, and the rest of the week sees NE and E winds bringing onshore chop. The swell drops to 2ft to 3ft, and the energy is weak to low-moderate. There's nothing to write home about.
So, to sum it up: the first four days are a bust. Your only real shout is Monday morning the 20th for some tiny, clean, glassy waves, or Sunday morning the 26th for the biggest, cleanest swell of the run. If you can hold out, Sunday the 26th is the pick of the bunch. The rest of the window is a gamble on the wind.
Rusty.
