The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you: the first several days are a total write-off. We’re looking at a solid seven-day stretch of tiny, weak, and pretty much unsurfable conditions. From Friday the 17th all the way through to Thursday the 23rd, the swell is barely a ripple, with combined wave energy stuck in the weak range (mostly between 5 and 74). The water temp is sitting at 71° right now, which is about 1° warmer than average for this time of year, so nothing wild there.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd. That’s when we finally see a bit of life. North Pier (Narragansett) gets a pulse of 5ft swell from the south, with a period of 10 seconds, and a combined energy hitting 407 (moderate) – that’s the first real sign of energy. The wind is a clean cross-off from the SSW at 15 mph, so the surface should be clean. But heads up, that 5ft is getting up there – it’s pushing the limits for beginners, and the southerly direction isn’t quite the optimum East direction the break likes, so it’ll be a bit lumpy. Still, it’s the best thing on offer for a while.
Then, things settle back down into a quiet, ordinary pattern for the rest of the week and into the next. Thursday the 23rd morning is surfable but very ordinary with 3ft south swell, clean cross-off wind, and energy of 198 (moderate). After that, it’s back to tiny, weak stuff until Sunday the 26th, where we get another morning of “surfable but very ordinary” conditions with 3ft from the south, clean wind, and energy of 174.
Honestly, the standout, if you can call it that, is that Wednesday afternoon, July 22nd session. It’s the only time the swell gets over 5ft, and the energy is the highest we’ll see. The wind is clean, but it’s not a perfect match for the break. The rest of the 16-day run is just a whole lot of small, average, or poor surf. The crowd potential at North Pier is "sometimes," so you might have a few others around, but with this quality, it won’t be packed.
There’s a stretch from Friday the 24th through to the end of the month where the waves are either tiny, period is short, or the wind is messy. The 1st of August shows a return to 3ft south swell with 180 energy, but it’s cross-shore wind, so not clean.
So, if you’re desperate, pencil in that Wednesday afternoon. Otherwise, keep your expectations low. It’s a long, flat spell for Narragansett.
