The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s break down what’s happening at North Pier (Narragansett).
Truth be told, the next several days are flat as a pancake. Nothing worth paddling out for until the morning of Sunday the 20th of July. That’s a solid stretch of no real surf.
Finally, on Monday the 20th of July, we see some life. A swell shows up around `3ft` to `4ft` from the south, with a period of about 9 seconds. The combined energy is moderate, between 164 and 198. Wind is offshore out of the west, light to gentle, so the surface stays clean. It’s not pumping, but after a week of nothing, it’s a welcome sight. The spot is sheltered, so it won’t handle a big southerly, but for smaller gear on a fun day, it works. Water temp is about average for the season.
That bump fades fast. From Tuesday the 21st, it’s back to small, messy waves with cross and cross-onshore wind.
Later in the week, around Friday the 24th and into the weekend, there’s a bit more energy—swell up to `4ft` to `4ft` from the south, but the period is short, around 6 to 8 seconds. Wind is cross or cross-off. The combined energy gets into triple digits again (152 to 171), so there’s some push, but it’s disorganised. Surfable if you’re keen, but nothing special.
Looking further out to the morning of Tuesday the 28th, there’s a bigger pulse: `5ft` from the south with an 8-second period, and combined energy at 248. That’s got some grunt, but the wind is a fresh cross-off from the south-southwest at 22 mph. It’ll be choppy and tough, and for a sheltered break like North Pier, it’s not gonna be pretty. Only for the hardcore experts if you’re into that.
Best call? Monday the 20th of July. It’s the cleanest window in a long, quiet stretch. Get on it while it lasts.
Rusty.
