Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for the coming weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a lean stretch. The swell’s hanging around in the ankle-to-knee high range for most of the forecast, and the wind’s often not doing us any favours. The combined energy is weak, never getting beyond a reading of 507, so there’s no real punch in the water. The wave periods are long, which usually means better shaped waves, but with this little height, it’s barely gonna break properly at a beach-and-jetty setup like New Jetty. Water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing out of the ordinary.
The first bit of anything worth mentioning kicks off on Friday morning, July 3rd. We’ve got a tiny 2ft swell from the SSW with a long 16-second period, and light SW winds blowing straight onshore. The energy reading is 236, which is weak. The comment says “marginal surf or questionable tide” – it’s a one-out-of-ten kind of morning. For a surfer, it’s a long paddle for a short, crumbly ride. That same day in the afternoon gets worse, with the wind picking up, so no go.
Through Saturday and Sunday, July 4th and 5th, the swell drops even more – down to 1ft or 2ft. The period stays long, 14 to 18 seconds, but the onshore wind ruins any chance of a clean wave. The energy is still weak. Monday the 6th through to Wednesday the 8th sees the swell nudge up to 3ft, and the energy creeps up to a high of 507 on Wednesday morning (July 8th). That Wednesday morning has a light cross-onshore S breeze at 6 mph, and the rating is a 2 out of 10 – the highest score of the entire forecast. That’s your one standout, if you can call it that. It’s still marginal, but with the best conditions of the run.
After that, from Thursday July 9th right through to Friday July 18th, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell sits between 1.0ft and 2ft, with onshore or cross-onshore winds, and the wave energy drops into the very weak range (below 200 most days). Saturday July 18th morning shows a glimmer – 2ft from the SW, 18-second period, and a light offshore SSW wind at just 3 mph. The wave energy reads 225, still low, and it’s only a 1 out of 10. Promising wind direction but the swell’s just too small to do much with.
So, bottom line: there’s a real gap of good surf here. The only time worth even looking at the ocean is Wednesday morning, July 8th, for the cleanest conditions relative to the rest. But if you’re after any sort of real ride, you’ll be waiting. The beach setup at New Jetty with this small, long-period swell and onshore wind is more interesting for a kite than a paddle board.
Stay patient, mates. It’ll turn around eventually.
Rusty.
