The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Let’s face it, it’s a grim run of surf ahead for New Jetty. The whole 16-day window is pretty much one long, flat spell with barely a wave worth paddling for. You’re looking at a solid stretch from now right through to around late July where the ocean just won’t deliver.
Right at the start, Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got tiny 1ft SW swell with a super-long 18 second period, but the wind is messing it up—cross-onshore from the SSW at just 3 mph. The combined energy is weak, sitting at 153, and the wave comment is flat-out poor. There’s not a single session that’s worth talking about for days.
The water temp is a standout though—it’s sitting at 70°F, which is a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s very unusual. You won’t need a thick suit, but you will need a lot of patience.
We’ve got a gap that runs from the 15th all the way through to Thursday the 23rd afternoon. That’s over a week of nothing but tiny, messy, cross-onshore junk. The swell barely nudges up to 2ft, but the winds are mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the wave comments are all ‘poor’ or ‘marginal’. The combined energy values are all under 500, mostly weak.
Then, on the afternoon of Thursday 23rd July, things finally get interesting. We’ve got a 3ft S swell with a 13 second period, and the wind turns glassy—literally calm, from the west at just 3 mph. That’s the best conditions we’ll see in this whole outlook. The combined energy is moderate at 337, and the wave comment says ‘expect good surf conditions’. This is the one and only standout window. It’s small, but for a patient surfer on a longboard or a funboard, it’ll be clean and fun at New Jetty (a beach/jetty setup).
But don’t get too excited. That glassy window is short-lived. By Friday the 24th morning, the swell bumps up to 3ft from the S with a 14 second period, but the wind turns onshore from the SW at 6 mph again, and by afternoon it’s a 16 mph cross-onshore mess. The combined energy hits 698 (moderate to strong), but it’s blown out.
The rest of the run into late July is more of the same—marginal, onshore, and weak. Swell stays between 2ft and 3ft, periods drop, and the energy never really fires. No other break is in the data, so this is it.
If you’re not a patient surfer, this stretch looks better for kite surfing than paddle surfing on most days. Still, forecasts can change, and that glassy Thursday afternoon session is worth marking on your calendar.
Rusty.
