The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. This is a bit of a tough one, folks. We’re looking at New Jetty for the next couple of weeks, and honestly, it’s a real slow start. The first several days are just flat and weak. We’ve got tiny swell, poor quality, and the wind ain’t doing us any favours. It’s a frustrating wait.

Thursday the 20th through to the end of the month we’re seeing scraps. Swell heights are hanging around 1.0ft to 2ft, mostly from the SSW or SW, with short periods that just don’t have any punch. The combined energy is weak to moderate at best, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, which means bumpy, messy conditions. It’s a real struggle to get excited about anything. There’s a bit of a lift on the 23rd of August with a longer period swell (19 seconds) and the energy ticks up a bit to 217 (moderate), but the wind is still onshore, and the surf is still marginal. It’s tough to recommend.

The real interest, if you can call it that, starts to build just after the month turns. On the 3rd of September, we see a spike in swell height to 4ft, from the west, but the period is a disappointing 7 seconds. That’s short period, wind swell, and it’s going to be weak and crumbly. The combined energy is 262 (moderate), but with that period, it’s not going to be the kind of wave you want to paddle out for. The wind is cross-shore on the morning, which is the best we’ll see, but it’s still a marginal call.

Then, on Friday the 4th of September, we get a bit of a last chance. The swell drops back to 2ft, but the period jumps to 18 seconds. That’s a proper groundswell, and the combined energy is 285 (moderate). The wind is light and onshore early, with a chance of being clean. For a beach/jetty setup like New Jetty, a long period swell like that can be a bit tricky – it might break too straight and not offer much shape. Still, it’s the best we’ve seen in a while.

The water temperature is a warm 70°, and it’s *much warmer than normal* for this time of year, which is a nice bonus if you’re just sitting out there on a small board.

Honestly, the standout option here is that Friday the 4th of September morning. It’s the only session that feels like it has a chance of being decent. The swell is small, but that long period and the light wind could give you a few clean, fun runners. The rest of the period is a write-off unless you’re desperate for a soggy paddle. It’s not a great run for New Jetty, and this is one of those times where the waiting game is the only game.
