What’s up, gang? Rusty here, giving you the lowdown on New Jetty for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it’s looking pretty flat and sloppy. The swell is small, and the wind is blowing onshore for most of the first week, making a mess of things. Water temp is around 67°, which is a touch warmer than average, so the sting’s out of the air, but that’s the only silver lining.
Monday, July 6th, we start with a weak, long-period groundswell from the SSW, barely 2ft, with a 16-second period. That long period usually means better form, but at a beach-and-jetty break it can straighten out. The combined energy is weak, and with a light onshore breeze, it’s a no-go. From there, right through to Tuesday, July 14th, it’s the same old song – tiny waves, poor quality, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore wind. There’s a solid 8-day stretch where you’re better off doing something else.
Now, there’s a tiny window on Wednesday morning, July 15th. The swell drops to about 1ft, but the wind goes glassy. That’s a massive plus for clean surf. The swell is from the SW with a really long period of 18 seconds, and the energy is still low, but "glassy" is a keyword. It’ll be a small, clean wave for a longboard. Crowds can show up here, so be early.
After that, it’s back to the grind. Swell stays between 1ft and 2ft, with onshore winds returning. There’s a slight bump on Saturday, July 18th morning, with a 2ft SSW swell and a 17-second period, but the wind is onshore again, so it won’t be pretty. Energy readings are all low.
The main standout is that glassy morning on the 15th, but it’s tiny. No big swell, no clean, rippable waves in the forecast. For the experts, there’s nothing overhead; for beginners, it’s a bit too weak to really learn on.
This quiet spell is pretty normal for New Jetty. Sometimes the ocean just turns off the tap. Forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a waiting game.
Keep your stick in the rack.
Rusty.
