The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at the local stretch for the next couple of weeks.

We’re talking about New Jetty/South Jetty for the whole run. Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the surf menu is pretty bare for a long stretch. There’s a solid gap of tough conditions to get through before we see anything worth paddling out for.

The water is running at 69°F and it’s sitting 6°F above the long-term average for this time of year, so that’s much warmer than normal – you’ll feel that difference.

The first real chance of a wave comes on Sunday morning, July 19th, but it’s a tease. We’ve got a long-period groundswell from the SW at 2ft with a period of 17 seconds – that’s a very long period swell. The combined energy is weak (212), and the wind is light and onshore. It’s poor surf conditions, flat and messy. The whole of this week and into the next is a write-off for any decent paddle. We’re looking at tiny swell, mostly around 1ft to 3ft, with cross-onshore winds and choppy, poor surf conditions. The combined energy stays low to moderate (between 143 and 430). This is a long, quiet gap.

The first real standout comes in the second week. On Friday afternoon, July 31st, we finally see a pulse. The swell picks up to 4ft from the S with a period of 16 seconds – a solid groundswell. The combined energy gets up to a strong 778, and the wind is light and onshore. It’s only rated as marginal surf, but it’s the best the whole forecast has to offer. The morning of Saturday, August 1st holds similar size at 4ft from the S with a 13-second period and moderate energy (526), still with light onshore wind. For a beginner-friendly spot like this, a 4ft swell is doable, and the long period will give it some shape, but this is a break that’s fairly exposed to the WSW optimum, so the S direction isn’t ideal. It’s the best we’ve got, and it’s promising but less certain that far out – keep an eye on it.

After that, it drops back into small, poor conditions and the energy fades away to 83 by Monday, August 3rd. The very last slot on the 3rd has a weird 3ft swell from the W with a period of just 5 seconds – that’s pure wind chop, nothing to get excited about.

So, the pick of the bunch is the Friday the 31st into Saturday the 1st. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only pulse of real energy. For the rest of it, you’re better off waxing the surfboard and waiting.

Rusty.
