The Lowdown
Alright, let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ over the next couple of weeks at New Jetty / South Jetty.
First off, straight up – the surf is gonna be a struggle for a good long while. We’re lookin’ at a real quiet stretch here, with no proper ridable waves on the cards until we get deep into the second week. From Tuesday the 14th right through to Wednesday the 22nd of July, it’s flat to tiny, with weak, messy energy and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. Wave heights barely hittin’ 3 ft, and combined swell energy values mostly bobbin’ around low to moderate. That’s a solid nine-day gap with nothin’ worth paddlin’ for. Forecasts can always change, but this looks like a typical quiet run for the area.
Now, things finally start to show a pulse around Thursday the 23rd of July. We’ve got a pulse of SSW groundswell pushin’ in, with swell heights up to 4 ft and a period of 15 seconds – that’s proper long-period groundswell, so it’ll have some shape and push behind it. Winds are light and cross-onshore, which ain’t perfect but will keep it clean-ish with just small ripples. This is beginner-friendly height too, so it’s not too intimidating. The standout session here looks like Thursday afternoon – still 4 ft from the south, period droppin’ slightly to 14 seconds, but the wind goes super light at about 3 mph from the WSW. Barely a breath of air. That’s near-glass, and in a spot that’s fairly exposed to the swell, it’ll actually line up alright for a few waves. That’s your best bet across the whole run: Thursday the 23rd of July, glassy vibes, clean little lines. Not a classic, but after a week and a half of nothin’, this is the moment. Expect warm air temps and some cloud cover.
After that, Friday the 24th and Saturday the 25th keep similar 4–4 ft SSW swell, but winds turn more cross-onshore and choppy. Still possible for a sneaky session if you’re keen. By Sunday the 26th, the swell backs off again, droppin’ to around 3 ft, and the rest of the month stays small and uninspiring.
Crowds at New Jetty / South Jetty can pop up from time to time, so keep an eye out. But with this long flat spell, most folks might’ve given up by then.
Overall, if you’re waitin’ for this stretch, mark Thursday the 23rd of July as the one. It’s not huge, but it’s the cleanest wave window we get. Hang tight.
