The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.

Well, I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough stretch for New Jetty/South Jetty. The whole 16-day window looks disappointing. It’s not giving us much to work with at all. There’s a real flat spell here, and the few times we do see a bump in swell, the conditions just aren't playing ball.

Right from the start, Friday the 17th, we’ve got tiny waves, only 1ft, and the wind is not helping. The water is sitting at 67°, which is 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s pretty unusual, and it feels more like a summer bath than prime surf season. The combined energy is weak, just 143 on Friday morning, dropping even lower in the afternoon. It’s the same story through Saturday and Sunday, with swell barely creeping up to 2ft and the wind staying onshore or cross-on. The whole first week is a write-off.

We get a tiny spike around Monday the 20th and Tuesday the 21st, with swell hitting 3ft from the SSW, but it’s still marginal. The energy is moderate (299 and 368), but the wind is a mess – onshore, light, but ruining any chance of a clean wave. The wave comment says it all: “poor surf conditions.” It’s heartbreaking, really.

The second week doesn’t get much better. The swell stays small, mostly under 3ft, with that same cross-on wind pattern. The combined energy jumps up a bit, like on the 28th afternoon where it hits 631 (moderate), but the swell is still only 3ft and the wind is a gentle cross-on breeze. A long-period swell from the SSW (18 seconds) is present, but for a beach break setup like this, that long period will make the waves close out straight and look pretty ugly. Not for the faint of heart.

There is one faint glimmer on the very last day of the month, Friday the 31st of July morning. We see a 3ft swell from the S, with a period of 15 seconds, and light onshore wind. The energy is moderate at 521. But it’s still marked as “marginal.” It’s the best on offer, but it’s not saying much. For a beginner spot, over 5ft would be too much, so this is still doable, but the quality won’t be there.

Honestly, this is a blank run. We’ve got a stretch of over two weeks with no sensible surf. It’s a typical quiet period for the area when the swell just doesn’t line up with the wind. You’d have to be desperate to paddle out, and even then, you’d be fighting a cross-on breeze and waist-high slop. The setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, I’ll tell you that.

So, no standouts. No joy. The forecast can change, but right now, I’d leave the board in the shed.

Rusty.
