Table - best surf conditions forecast for New Jetty/South Jetty over the next 16 days.
G'day, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you – the next 16 days are a proper struggle for surf around New Jetty/South Jetty. We're looking at a long, quiet run with nothing worth paddling out for until the very end, and even that's a big maybe.
Right now, the ocean is flat and hopeless. From Friday the 10th of July right through to Saturday the 18th of July, it's all tiny windswell junk with combined wave energy barely getting past 226 (weak at best) and mostly sitting below 160. Swell heights are stuck at 1 ft to 3 ft, and the period is all over the place – mostly short-period stuff under 9 seconds, so no power, no shape. The wind is onshore or cross-onshore from the SW and WSW, blowing at 6 to 9 mph, which just messes up what little bump there is. The water temperature anomaly is about average for this time of year, nothing weird there.
On Sunday the 19th of July, things perk up a little – combined energy hits 274 in the morning with a long-period 17-second swell from the SW at 2 ft, but the wind stays onshore. By the afternoon, it's cross-onshore and choppy. Still, it's *marginal* at best, not enough to get excited about. You'd be scratching for a knee-high dribbler.
Then we go quiet again from Monday the 20th of July through to Wednesday the 22nd of July – same old story: tiny 1 ft to 2 ft swell, short period, and onshore or cross-onshore wind. Combined energy stays in the 140 to 262 range, which is weak.
Now, the standout – if you can call it that – is on Friday the 24th of July, afternoon. The swell jumps to 6 ft from the WNW, but with a terrible 7-second period. The combined energy hits 555 (moderate wave energy), but that short period means it's going to be a washing machine – bumpy, weak, and jumbled. The wind is light and onshore from the SW, so it won't be clean. This is a beach-and-reef setup, and with that short-period swell and onshore wind, it honestly looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Beginners should absolutely stay out of it at 6 ft. For experts, it's still pretty average.
Overall, there's nothing here that I'd call a good surf. The best on offer is that Friday 24th July afternoon, but even then, it's rough and raw. We've had a solid blank run, which is a bit unusual for the area – it tends not to stay this poor for long. Forecasts can change, so keep an eye out, but for now, leave the board in the garage.
