Table - best surf conditions forecast for New Jetty/South Jetty over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks. I’ve got to be straight with you – this run looks tough. There’s no real standout window, and the quality is locked in "poor" for almost the entire 16 days. We’re looking at tiny, inconsistent waves and a lot of onshore or cross-onshore wind. The one spot with any recommendations is New Jetty/South Jetty, but even that’s a grind.
The first real chance at a wave kicks off on Monday, 13 July, but it’s a weak start. You’ve got a 2 ft swell from the SSW, with a period of 13 seconds, hitting the beach. The combined energy is only 113 – that’s weak. The wind is onshore at 6 mph, which is light but still on the nose, making it messy. It’s a beginner-level spot, but honestly, for a beginner, it’s just a dribble. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing crazy.
By Tuesday, 14 July, the swell drops even further to 1.0 ft. The wind is a bit stronger, 12 mph from the W, cross-onshore, chopping it up. Not worth paddling out. Wednesday, 15 July, has a very long-period 18-second swell, but it’s only 1.0 ft. That long period (over 15 seconds) means it’ll break straight at a beach break setup, so it won’t form well. The energy is still low at 114. Thursday, 16 July, stays poor with 3 ft and a 8-second period, which is short period and weak.
We go through a whole week of this – 13 July to 22 July – without a single decent score. It’s a stretch of over a week where the recommendation is zero. The swell limps along between 1.0 ft and 3 ft, mostly from the SSW or SW. The wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, with speeds around 6 to 9 mph. The combined energy stays under 300, which is weak to moderate at best. The wave comment is "poor surf conditions" from start to finish.
The only slight shift comes on Thursday, 23 July. The morning shows a 3 ft swell from the S, 13-second period, with a combined energy of 314 – that’s the highest we’ve seen. The wind is light cross-onshore at 6 mph, creating small wind ripples. The file calls it "marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions." It’s not good, but it’s the best we’ve got. The wave is still only 3 ft, and the wind is cross-onshore, so it won’t be clean. Even then, the afternoon drops back to poor.
After that, Friday, 24 July, has a similar 3 ft from the S, but the energy jumps to 381 in the afternoon. Again, light cross-onshore wind. Better energy, but still not clean. The swell is still small, and the direction is S, which is a bit off the optimum for this break (WSW is the ideal). The rest of the run into the end of July stays small, with no real improvement.
So, to sum it up: the best window is around 23-24 July, with the most energy (314-381) and a slight bump in size to 3 ft. But it’s still poor quality, with cross-onshore wind. For a beginner, the tiny swell (1.0 ft-2 ft) is too small to learn on, and the bigger days (3 ft) are still under 5 ft, so it’s not too big, but the wind ruins it. The long period swells (over 15 seconds) that pop up are wasted on a beach break, making them straight and unexciting. There’s no kite-surfing wind here – it’s just light and messy.
That’s the story. It’s a flat spell, and forecasts can change, but right now, I’d keep the board in the car and the wax in the bag.
Rusty.
