The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and settle in, mates. Let's talk about what's on the table for the next couple of weeks.
To be honest, it's a quiet stretch for New Jetty/South Jetty. The forecast is calling for a long run of small, weak swells and a lot of cross-onshore wind. For the first week and a half, from Wednesday the 19th of August all the way through to Friday the 28th of August, the wave heights are stuck between 1 ft and 2 ft, and the combined energy is mostly in the low to moderate range (a reading of 53 to 173). The wind is a constant problem, mostly coming from the WSW, making it cross-on or onshore. That's going to leave the surface choppy and messy. The water is a very warm 70°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least a wetsuit isn't needed, but the surf itself is a struggle.
The only real glimmer of hope comes right at the very end of the outlook. On Saturday the 29th of August, we finally see a bit of a bump. The swell height pushes up to 2 ft from the SSW, and the energy jumps to a strong 372. The period is a solid 17 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell, so it'll have some punch. The morning looks best with a light breeze, and while the wind is still cross-on, it's not too strong. This swell holds through Sunday the 30th of August, with another 2 ft from the SSW and energy at 274, and the wind looks better on Sunday afternoon, turning to a light onshore breeze from the SW. You might find a couple of clean, rideable waves at the peak of those tides, but it's a short window.
Basically, you've got nine days of poor conditions to get through, then a brief, promising window on the weekend of the 29th and 30th. After that, it drops back down into the small stuff. For beginners, this whole period is a write-off; the swell is tiny, and the wind is messy. It's a case of waiting it out.
