The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let’s break it down in good old feet and miles.

New Jetty/South Jetty isn’t firing right now, not by a long shot. The water is a warm 66°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real bonus. But the swell is tiny and the wind is mostly cross-on or onshore, leaving it choppy and messy. The wave energy starts off weak (157) and takes a while to build.

We’ve got a gap of several days with no real standouts. From Thursday the 16th through Saturday the 18th, the swell is just 1ft to 3ft, with periods around 9 seconds – that’s short-period junk. Winds are light to gentle, but mostly cross-on, so the surface is bumpy. Nothing to write home about.

Sunday the 19th morning shows a slight bump to 3ft from the S, with a 14-second period, and the energy jumps to 345 – moderate. But the wind is onshore, so it’s still not clean. Same story into Monday and Tuesday.

Now, Friday the 24th morning is the first real standout. A tiny 1ft swell from the SSW, but with a period of 24 seconds – that’s super long groundswell. The energy is strong at 470. The wind is light onshore, but with that period, the waves will be clean and lined up, with long waits between sets. For a beach break, this period can make it break straight, but the light wind and small size help.

The following weekend, Saturday the 25th, has a bit more size at 3ft from the S, with a 14-second period and energy at 565. The wind is light cross-on, with rain showers. The morning is the pick.

For the second week, from the 26th to the 31st, we’ve got persistent swell from the SSW, usually around 2ft, with periods between 14 and 19 seconds – good groundswell. The energy stays moderate to strong. The standout in the second week is the morning of the 28th: 3ft from the SSW, 18-second period, strong energy of 418, and light cross-on winds – that’s about as clean as it gets here. The afternoon of the 27th also has promise with 2ft, 19-second period, and energy of 497, but the wind is a gentle cross-on.

Best bets: Friday the 24th morning for the super long period, and the morning of the 28th for the best balance of size, period, and wind. The crowds can show up here sometimes, so you might have some company on those windows.

Rusty.
