The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s see what’s cooking.
Honestly, the next 16 days are a bit of a bust – “poor surf conditions” is the story from Monday, August 17th all the way through to Tuesday, September 1st. No real standouts at all.
The only break we’ve got to talk about is New Jetty/South Jetty. It’s a beginner-friendly spot that breaks fairly consistently. The water is running at a very unusual 70°F, which is 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year – so it’s noticeably warm.
Swells are tiny, running 1ft to 2ft from the SSW, with periods from 13 to 17 seconds. There’s some longer-period groundswell in there, but the heights are just too small to do anything with. Wave energy is low to moderate – readings from 61 to 273 (moderate at the top end) – but it’s not enough to push a decent wave.
Winds are mostly light to gentle from the WSW or SW, onshore or cross-onshore for the most part. A few mornings do look clean with light breeze, but the swell is still puny. Late August, on the 29th and 30th, we get a very slight bump to 2ft with 16-second periods and light cross-onshore wind, and the energy hits 261 to 273 (moderate) – that’s the best of a bad lot, but it’s still marginal. You might see a few others out there, but it won’t be crowded.
Your best chance for a splash is the mornings from August 29th to September 1st, with a consistent 2ft to 2ft, light wind, and some longer period. But this is strictly longboard or flat-water stuff – nothing for a shortboard. Anything over 5ft would be too big for beginners here, but we’re miles from that.
Short version: it’s a quiet run. Probably more suited to a kite or foil than a surfboard. Things can change, but for now, don’t hold your breath.
Rusty.
