The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this stretch is a bit of a tough one for the paddle crew. The whole 16-day window is pretty much a write-off for decent surf. The first real chance of anything even worth a mention doesn’t roll around until late in the piece, and even then, it’s nothing to write home about. You’ve got a long gap of nothing but poor conditions from the start right through to the end of August.
The first hint of something that might get you out of bed is on Monday the 31st of August. The morning at New Jetty/South Jetty shows a tiny 2 ft swell from the SSW, but it’s got a cross-on breeze from the SSW at 6 mph. The combined energy is moderate at 288, but the wave comment just says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions.” It’s a beginner-friendly spot that’s fairly consistent, but you’d be battling for tiny, gutless waves. The water is a very unusual 70°, running much warmer than normal for this time of year, which is a weird plus if you’re in a wetsuit.
After that, it’s back to the same old story. Tuesday the 1st of September the swell drops back to 2 ft from the SSW with a gentle cross-onshore breeze – just poor surf conditions. The whole period is a bust. The swell direction is mostly SSW to SW, which is a cross-on to offshore setup here, but the size is just too small and the wind is never clean enough. The best you can say is the combined energy values are mostly moderate (between 100 and 224), but they’re not delivering any quality. A few days in late August, like the 25th, show a 3 ft swell from the west with a period of just 6 seconds, but that’s a short-period wind swell with a cross-onshore breeze – total junk. The energy on that morning was 197, but it’s poor surf.
Forget the board for now. Honestly, this is the kind of run where the wind is more consistent than the waves. With the persistent cross-onshore and onshore winds, and only knee-high slop, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. There’s no standout, no hidden gem – just a whole lot of waiting. The forecasts can always change, but right now, I’d be finding something else to do.
Rusty.
