Table - best surf conditions forecast for New Jetty/South Jetty over the next 16 days.

G'day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days are a tough watch for decent waves around here. We’ve got a long stretch of small, messy, and mostly unrideable surf ahead, so don’t be expecting to wax up your favourite board just yet.

The first solid mention of anything surfable is a long way off, nearly two weeks away. From now until late on the 25th of July, it’s pretty much a write-off. The swell is tiny, mostly under 2 ft, and the wind is almost always cross-on or onshore, keeping things choppy and poor. You’ll see a bit of a pulse around the 18th of July, with the swell bumping up to about 3 ft from the south, but it’s still tagged as poor surf conditions with moderate onshore wind. The wave energy is moderate (639-650) but the wind just ruins it. For a beginner spot like New Jetty/South Jetty, it’s about as uninspiring as it gets.

There is one faint glimmer of hope, and it’s a long way out. On the morning of Saturday the 25th of July, the outlook shifts from “poor” to “marginal.” The swell is still only 1 ft, but it’s coming from the SSW with a very long period of 21 seconds. That’s proper groundswell energy, and the combined energy (334) is moderate. The wind is a light cross-on from the WSW at 6 mph, which is workable. For a spot like New Jetty/South Jetty that’s fairly exposed to a WSW optimum, this long-period pulse could wrap in and offer a few clean, lined-up waves. Long-period swells can break a bit straight on a beach setup, but with the light wind, it could be the best we see. The water temp is about average for the time of year.

Then, on Sunday the 26th of July, the morning sees a light cross-on breeze from the SSW at only 3 mph, with a 2 ft SSW swell and a 20-second period. The combined energy is 380, still moderate. It’s another marginal call, but if the wind stays light, it’s worth a look.

Honestly, the highlight of the whole 16-day window is that Saturday the 25th of July morning. It’s not a standout by any means, but it’s the only time the conditions align even slightly. The swell is small, so it’s fine for beginners, and the long period means you’ll have to wait for the sets, but when they come, they could have a bit of shape. The rest of the time? You’re better off checking the forecast again in a few days.

Rusty.
