Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – this 16-day window for New Jetty/South Jetty is pretty grim. The whole period kicks off on Sunday the 5th of July and runs through to Monday the 20th of July, but there’s not a single day I’d actually recommend paddling out. It’s a long, flat run of poor surf, and that’s just the reality for this spot right now. The only glimmer of hope comes right at the tail end, but even that’s barely worth a mention.
We start Sunday the 5th with some clouds and a light cross-on breeze, swell sitting at a tiny 1 ft from the SSW with a very long 18-second period – that’s a groundswell, but with combined energy reading just 158 (weak), it’s not doing anything. The next few days are a carbon copy: Monday the 6th, 1 ft, 16 seconds, 211 energy, still poor; Tuesday the 7th, 2 ft, 18 seconds, 336 energy; Wednesday the 8th, 2 ft, 16 seconds, 449 energy – still rated as poor surf conditions every session. The wind stays cross-on or onshore, mostly gentle to moderate, so it’s messy.
Thursday the 9th through to the 15th of July doesn’t get any better. We’re stuck with swell heights between 1 ft and 3 ft, periods dropping from 16 seconds down to 8 seconds, and combined energy mostly in the 100–300 range (weak to low-end moderate). The wind is persistent cross-on or on, keeping things choppy. Thursday the 16th of July and Friday the 17th see the swell nudge up to 3 ft from the west with a 9-second period, combined energy around 211–252, but the conditions are still poor – except for Friday afternoon the 17th of July. That’s the one standout, and I mean the only one: the wind goes glassy with a slight air, 3 ft west swell, 9 seconds, and combined energy at 252 (moderate). It’s described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – not great, but at least it’s glassy. Still, with those tiny waves, it’s really just a soft, weak option.
Saturday the 18th of July goes back to poor with a cross-shore breeze, and Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th wrap it up with onshore wind and a weak west and south swell.
So what’s the bottom line? There’s zero good surf in this whole 16-day outlook. The only moment that’s even close to okay is Friday afternoon the 17th of July when it goes glassy, but the swell is still small and ordinary. For a beginner spot that’s fairly consistent normally, this blank run is a bit unusual – but it happens. Forecasts change, so don’t lose hope entirely. Just don’t bother paddling out until you see a real pulse come through.
Rusty.
