The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening for the next couple of weeks.

Honestly, it’s a tough one for Los Charcos (Costa-Teguise). The entire 16-day window is a real struggle. There’s no proper surf on offer, and the bits that are closest to being rideable aren’t worth paddling out for. The first recommendation doesn’t even show up until the 16th of August, and even then it’s barely a whisper.

The main issue is a persistent, strong cross-offshore wind out of the north and north-northeast, howling at 18 to 21 mph for many days. That’s going to be a messy, blown-out scene. The swell is all short-period windswell, with periods of 6 to 8 seconds, which means weak, crumbly lumps. The combined energy is low, mostly in the 120 to 260 range, which is weak to moderate. There’s no groundswell to speak of.

The water temperature is about average for the time of year, so nothing dramatic there.

The only slight glimmer is on the morning of Sunday, the 16th of August. You’ve got a 5 ft swell from the north-northeast with a 7-second period. The wind drops to 12 mph, still cross-off from the north, making it clean. The combined energy is 234 (moderate). It’s still a marginal tide and surf situation, but if you’re desperate, it’s the closest you’ll get to a wave. The wind is still annoying, but it’s the best of a bad lot.

Then on the morning of Monday, the 18th of August, there’s a brief pulse of 5 ft swell from the north with a slightly longer 9-second period, pushing the combined energy to 534 (strong). Still a cross-off wind, but it’s a moderate 15 mph. This is the standout, but it’s still a marginal call. It’s a long way out, so don’t bank on it.

For the rest of the period, it’s a total write-off. The swell drops off, the wind stays up, and the energy numbers fall below 100 (weak) by the 23rd. There’s a gap of no recommendations from the 8th to the 15th. It’s a bleak run.

If you’re a kitesurfer, this steady north wind and some chop might be your thing. For paddle surfing, it’s a hard pass. I’d give it a miss and wait for the next system.

Rusty.
