The Lowdown

Alright, let's get real about the next 16 days here in Lanzarote. I’ve been staring at the charts and, honestly, it’s a tough stretch for anyone wanting to get a proper wave. The consistent northeast trade winds are going to be a real pain. For the first two weeks, you’re looking at a solid 18 to 25 mph cross-off breeze from the north-northeast day after day. That’s going to trash the surface at most spots, and the swell just isn’t doing us any favours either.

The first proper surfable day I can see isn't until Wednesday, 19th August. Before that, from the 5th all the way through the 18th, it’s a write-off. The wave comment is "poor surf conditions" for every single session, so don’t even bother paddling out. That’s a solid 14-day gap of nothing worth talking about.

When we finally get a little window of hope, the only spot on the radar is Las Cucharas (Costa Teguise). It’s a beach and reef setup, but it’s inconsistent, so you can’t count on it. The water is about average for this time of year.

On Wednesday 19th morning, the swell drops to 3 ft from the north with a period of 9 seconds. The wave energy is weak, just 122 (combined energy of all swells directed here). The wind finally eases off to a light breeze of 6 mph, still cross-off, but much more manageable. The comment upgrades to "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s not going to be pumping, but it’ll be rideable. The Thursday morning 20th is similar, with 3 ft from the north, 8-second period, and even weaker energy at 90. The wind stays light at 6 mph.

Look, there’s nothing here that’s a true standout. If I have to pick the best on offer, it’s the Wednesday morning 19th. The swell is coming from the north, which is close to the optimum NE direction, and the light wind is the cleanest we’ll see all outlook. For a beginner, 3 ft is fine, but the inconsistency means you’ll be waiting for sets. The crowds are listed as "sometimes," so you might have a few others waiting with you.

It’s a long wait for very ordinary surf. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, because it tends not to stay this poor forever.

Rusty.
