The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s on the menu for Little Bay. This is a spot that’s inconsistent, so when it goes quiet, it can stay quiet for a stretch. But when it fires, it’s a real treat for the eyes.

The first week, honestly, is a write-off for the average surfer. We’ve got a powerful SW groundswell on the way, but it’s just too damn big. The wave energy is massive, with values hitting well into the thousands, which sounds impressive, but for Little Bay, that’s way too much. The waves are going to be washing through at 8 ft to 13 ft, and that’s expert territory. The water is sitting at 57°F, which is a bit colder than normal for this time of year – a solid 3°F below average, so you’ll want a thicker wetsuit. The winds are mostly cross-off or clean, but the size makes it a no-go for most. It’s a solid week of just watching the horizon.

The real standout, the true window of opportunity, hits on Tuesday, August 11th. The swell drops to a very manageable 6 ft from the SSW, with a clean 12-second period. The energy is still moderate, but the wind is a light, cross-off breeze from the ESE. That’s the day. The guidance says “excellent for experienced surfers,” and I’m with that. The wave direction is SW, which is bang on the money for this break. It’s going to be clean, and with the swell dropping, the crowds are a possibility, but with the choppy start to the week, it might be a bit quieter than usual.

The next morning, Wednesday, August 12th, is also a cracker. It’s a touch smaller at 5 ft, but the period is a very long 18 seconds. That’s pure groundswell energy. The wind is glassy offshore from the ENE. That’s a special morning. The wave energy is still strong, and the sets will be clean and lined up. For a beach break like Little Bay, that long period might make the waves a bit too straight, but on a day with that kind of wind, the shape should be there.

The rest of the second week (from August 14th) gets frustrating. The swell drops right off to 4 ft to 5 ft, the energy is weak, and the winds turn onshore or cross-on. It’s marginal surf at best.

So, if you’re around, your best bet is Tuesday August 11th and Wednesday August 12th. The first day is a bit bigger and punchier, the second day is smaller, glassier, and long-period. The clear winner is the Wednesday morning – that glassy offshore wind with the 5 ft, 18-second swell is the kind of session you remember.

Rusty.
