Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a hard look at what’s cookin’ on the French Riviera for the next couple of weeks. Truth is, we’ve got a long, dry spell ahead.
Right off the bat, from Sunday the 5th through to Monday the 13th of July, there is absolutely no swell showing up. It’s a flat spell that runs for over a week. The wind and weather are mostly clear, and we get a few glassy mornings, especially on Tuesday the 7th and Wednesday the 8th, but without waves, it’s just a calm sea state. You’d be better off with a stand-up paddleboard or a cold drink on the beach.
The first hint of something happens on Tuesday the 14th of July. Beaulieu sur Mer – the local reef break – picks up a tiny pulse. Tuesday morning sees a weak 1 foot swell from the NNE with a period of 3 seconds, and combined wave energy is basically non-existent (1). That’s not going to get your heart rate up. The afternoon adds a little more: 2 feet from the east at 4 seconds, energy of (9). It’s still poor surf conditions, and the wind is a light cross-onshore. Not worth paddling out.
Wednesday the 15th offers the best of a bad lot. Glassy conditions in the morning with a 1 foot swell from the SE, period of 5 seconds, energy at (7). The afternoon turns a little cross-shore, but that tiny bump is probably your best chance to slide on something – if you’re desperate. It’s still called “poor surf conditions” in the data, so don’t expect much.
From Thursday the 16th through to Monday the 20th, it’s back to zero. Nothing on the charts. There’s a glassy morning on Saturday the 18th with a minuscule 0.7 foot from the ENE, period of 2 seconds, but that’s barely a ripple. The afternoon gets a little choppy with a cross-onshore breeze. Sunday the 19th afternoon turns clean with a light cross-offshore wind, but again, no swell to ride.
Look, this is a tough forecast for surfers in this part of the Med. The reef at Beaulieu sur Mer needs a proper easterly or southerly pulse to work, and it’s just not coming through in the next 16 days. For beginners, there’s nothing safe to learn on. For experts, there’s nothing to ride. It’s a total blank run, and in this area, that’s not unusual for this time of year.
Keep your gear waxed, watch the sky, and hope the forecasts change.
Rusty.
