The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and settle in, because this one's a bit of a tough pill to swallow. I'm Rusty, and I've been staring at the charts for our little slice of coast here, and truth be told, it's looking pretty grim for the next couple of weeks.
We're looking at Ste Marguerite, a point break that's fairly consistent and exposed to the SW. Problem is, the swell just isn't showing up with any real conviction. The water temp is sitting at about 67°, which is pretty much spot on for this time of year, so at least you won't be freezing your ears off while you're sitting there waiting.
For the first ten days or so, from Tuesday the 28th of July right through to about the 6th of August, it's a write-off. We're seeing tiny, weak waves, mostly under 2 feet, with a lot of wind chop and onshore breezes messing up any chance of a clean line. The combined energy is in the doldrums, barely breaking 50 (29) most days. You'll be paddling more than you're surfing.
There's a slight glimmer of hope on Thursday the 6th of August. A morning session with a light NNW breeze making it clean, but the swell is still a pathetic 2 feet from the WSW. The report says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions," and I'm not going to lie to you, it's a 1 out of 10. It's a chance to get wet, but don't expect any heroics.
The real kicker, and the only thing that even gets my heart rate up, is a full week later. On Tuesday the 11th of August, the morning is looking glassy, dead calm wind, with a 3 feet, 8-second swell from the west. The combined energy finally jumps up to a solid 106, which is moderate. That's the best we've got all fortnight. The conditions will be clean, and the point should produce a few peelers. The afternoon gets ruined by a cross-onshore wind, so make it a dawn patrol session.
After that, it fades back into the doldrums. So, here's the summary: save your energy for the morning of Tuesday the 11th of August. It's the only standout in a sea of mediocrity. The rest of the time, you might as well take up kite surfing because the wind is more reliable than the waves.
