The Lowdown
Alright, let me tell ya, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating outlook for the next couple of weeks here at Rade de Croisic. I’ve looked at the charts and honestly, for the first week and a half there’s just nothing doing. We’ve got a long dry spell with barely a ripple. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 71°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only excitement.
For the first week, from Tuesday the 14th right through to the morning of Sunday the 26th, the surf is basically non-existent. You’ll see tiny little dribbles of swell, mostly from the West or WSW, but they’re weak, often with lousy onshore wind, and the combined swell energy is pitiful – hardly ever getting into double digits. It’s a total write-off. The only small bit of hope in that whole stretch is a morning or two of glassy conditions on the 23rd and 24th, but the swell is still so small, around 2ft to 3ft and a super short period of 4 to 5 seconds, it’s not worth paddling out for. The wind comes right onshore in the afternoons, so don’t bother.
Now, hold on a minute, because things try to wake up around the 26th of July. You’ll see a bit more energy start to show, but it’s still poor. The first time we get something that could be called ‘surfable’ is on the morning of Monday, the 27th of July. We’ve got clean conditions with a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNE, and a 2ft West swell. It’s not big, but the combined energy is a moderate 60, and it’s clean. It’s a small, weak option for a longboard, but it's the first real chance you get.
The afternoon of the 27th, the swell bumps up to 3ft from the West with a moderate 196 energy, but the wind goes onshore again, so the quality is shot.
The real standout, if we can call it that, is building towards the very end of the outlook. On Tuesday the 28th of July, you’ve got a building swell, but it’s messy with onshore and cross-onshore winds. The combined energy jumps to a strong 437 in the afternoon with a 4ft West swell. That’s a lot of water moving, but it’s going to be choppy and blown out, so it’s one for experienced surfers only, and you’ll want a crew out there because crowds are possible.
Then, on the 29th, we see a similar story: 3ft to 4ft swell from the West, but the winds are still onshore or cross-onshore. It’s a whole lot of nothing that’s any good.
Honestly, Rade de Croisic, we’re looking at a dud of a run. If you’re desperate for a dip on the 27th morning, go for it, but don’t expect much. The forecasts can always change, but for now, it’s time to wax the longboard and wait.
Rusty.
