The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here from the Rade de Croisic. Looking at the charts, it’s a pretty quiet start with a long wait for the good stuff. The water’s a balmy 72°, which is about 7° warmer than usual for this time of year. Makes for a real nice tropical paddle even when the surf is flat.
For the first week and a half, from now through the 23rd of July, it’s flat to tiny. There are some clean mornings with light offshore winds on the 18th, 19th, and 22nd, but the swell is barely a knee-high ripple at 0.7 feet. The combined energy is practically nothing, reading as low as 3 to 11 (weak energy). It’s a real bummer, but that’s just how it’s looking.
Things finally start to change on the 24th of July. Friday morning brings the first real hope. We’ve got a 4-foot SW groundswell with a 7-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the ENE. The combined energy jumps to 269 (moderate wave energy). It’s the first decent window, but the swell is still a bit raw.
The standout window is the morning of Saturday, the 25th of July. That’s the one. The Rade de Croisic is set to get a solid 6-foot swell from the WSW, with a 10-second period. That’s proper groundswell with some real punch. The combined energy is a very strong 627 (strong wave energy). The wind is a tiny offshore breeze from the ENE, basically glassy. This is going to be clean, head-high plus, and powerful. It’s a beautiful setup for a point or reef. Just keep in mind that with a 6-foot swell, it’s too big for groms, and the crowds around here can be an issue, so get there early. The afternoon on the 25th gets blown out by a strong onshore wind, so the morning session is the only window.
The days after that have some leftovers but the wind is messy again. Saturday morning, the 25th, is the only real standout. It’s a long way off, so keep checking back, but right now, that’s your best shot.
Rusty.
