The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you about the coming weeks around the Rade de Croisic. Right off the bat, the honest truth is there’s not much to get excited about. The whole sixteen-day window is looking like a tough run for decent surf. The first decent-sized swell doesn’t really show its face until Wednesday, August 26th, and even then, the conditions are going to be fighting it every step of the way. It’s pretty grim.
Looking at the timeline, we’ve got a lot of flat and weak days to start. Friday the 21st has some small 3ft swell from the west with a 9-second period, but a 12 mph cross-onshore wind from the NW just chops it up – the energy is weak (111), and it’s a write-off. Saturday the 22nd is even smaller, with a 2ft swell in the morning, but at least the wind from the ENE is light and cross-offshore, making things clean, though there’s barely any energy (33). Sunday the 23rd goes almost flat with a 0.7ft swell, but the wind turns offshore from the ENE at 22 mph, so it’s clean but absolutely tiny. The whole first week is a struggle.
There is a genuine pulse of size that pushes through from Wednesday the 26th into Thursday the 27th. The swell jumps up to 5ft on Wednesday afternoon from the WSW with a moderate energy reading (561). The problem is the wind is a messy cross-onshore from the SSW at 16-19 mph, so it’s going to be lumpy and choppy. By Thursday afternoon, it’s 6ft from the same direction but the wind is up to 19 mph, making it lumpy again. For the experienced crew out there, Thursday afternoon’s 6ft to 6ft swell carries the most grunt (390-533), but with onshore and strong cross-onshore winds, it’s really a kite-surfing setup more than a paddle-surfing dream. It’s just not clean.
After that, the winds stay messy through the end of August, and by the start of September the swell drops right off again. The whole run from September 1st onward is back to tiny, weak conditions with little energy.
For a standout? Honestly, there isn’t one. If you’re desperate for a paddle, the cleanest window is probably early Saturday morning, August 22nd, with that light cross-offshore wind and 2ft of swell. It’s nothing to write home about, but at least it won’t be a white-knuckle session. It’s a long, flat run ahead. Forecasts can change, though, so keep your ear to the ground.
Stay patient, be ready,
Rusty.
