The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I gotta be straight with you. Looking at the 16-day window for the Rade de Croisic area, it’s a pretty grim stretch. The surf is small, weak, and mostly blown out. There’s not a single standout session in the entire forecast, and a lot of days are just going to be flat or messy.
We start off with Saturday the 18th. The morning is glassy with a north wind at 3 mph, and a tiny 0.7 ft swell from the west with a short 8-second period. The water is a balmy 71°, which is a huge 5° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual. But the weak energy (6) and tiny waves mean it’s poor surf. The afternoon gets worse as a 16 mph onshore wind kicks in.
Sunday the 19th has a stiff offshore breeze from the ENE at 19 mph in the morning, but the swell is still just 0.7 ft. Clean, but nothing to ride. The wind backs off a bit in the afternoon, but it’s still a cross-offshore breeze. The swell remains tiny all through the next week, with combined energy readings rarely getting above 10. Tuesday the 21st and Wednesday the 22nd have clean mornings with cross-offshore winds, but the waves are basically non-existent. It’s a week of flat, clean, but frustrating conditions.
The following weekend, on Saturday the 25th, the swell tries to pick up a little. The morning is a messy 1 ft from the NW with a terrible 3-second period and a cross-onshore wind. The afternoon sees the swell jump to 4 ft from the west, but the wind is howling onshore at 22 mph. The energy is still weak (81), and it’s going to be a complete washout. Sunday the 26th is much the same – a strong onshore wind and a messy 3 ft swell. On Monday the 27th afternoon, the combined energy finally hits 104 (moderate), but it’s a 3 ft swell with onshore winds. The quality is just not there.
The rest of the second week is a repeat: small swell, short periods, and mostly onshore or cross-onshore winds. There’s a clean morning on Thursday the 30th with a cross-offshore breeze and a 1.0 ft, 10-second period swell, but again, it’s just too small. Friday the 31st morning has a similar clean look, but still only 1 ft.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. The waves are too small, the wind is wrong, or it’s just poor quality. If you’re desperate for a splash, the cleanest-looking mornings are the 19th, 21st, and 22nd, but you’ll be floating on a lake. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on days like the 25th and 26th when the wind is strong. Hang tight, forecasts can change.
Rusty.
