The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening for the next couple of weeks. I gotta be straight with you – this is a tough one to write. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off for any kind of decent surf. We’re looking at a long, flat stretch with hardly any energy and the wind is just all over the shop.
We start off with a bit of a tease on Saturday the 22nd. Rade de Croisic is showing a tiny 2ft swell from the W, but it’s crossed up with a cross-offshore wind from the ENE. The energy is low (33), and the period is a short 8 seconds. The water is sitting at 68°, which is about normal for this time of year. Honestly, it’s going to be a gutless, messy affair. Not worth suiting up for.
Through Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th, we get even smaller, with swells dropping to 0.7ft to 1ft. There’s a brief moment on Sunday morning with a clean offshore wind from the ENE at 22 mph, but the swell is so tiny (0.7ft) that it’s barely a ripple. The energy is next to nothing (16). It’s like the ocean is sleeping.
The middle of the week doesn’t get any better. Tuesday and Wednesday see a slight bump to 2ft to 3ft, but the wind is either cross or cross-onshore, making it choppy and ugly. The energy stays weak (74 to 83). Even a 3ft swell with a 7-second period is just not going to have any shape.
Now, we get to the end of the month and into September. The swell direction stays stubbornly SW or W, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. Thursday the 27th of August sees a jump to 6ft, and the energy hits moderate (794), but it’s with a stiff 19 mph cross-onshore wind from the SW. It’s going to be a lumpy, blown-out mess. Friday the 28th is even bigger, with 8ft swell from the WSW and strong onshore winds of 28 to 31 mph from the W. The energy is strong (1042), but with that wind, it’s going to be a washing machine. This is strictly for the hardcore crowd, and even then, it looks more like a kite-surfing session than a paddle-surfing one. At 8ft, that’s expert territory only.
The trend continues right through to the 6th of September. We see some moderate energy around the 31st of August (230) and 1st of September (156), but again, the wind is always on or cross-on. The swell is too small and the wind is too bad to make anything of it. The only slightly interesting note is on the 5th of September, there’s a 2ft swell from the W with a longer period of 11 seconds, which can give some shape, but it’s cursed with a 19 mph cross-onshore wind from the SW, making it lumpy. The energy is moderate (112) but it’s just not clean.
So, bottom line: there are no good surf options. Not a single standout. The whole 16 days is a gap. The best you can hope for is a small, clean window that doesn’t appear here. Forecasts can change, but for now, leave the board in the car and enjoy the beach from the sand. The water is about average for the time of year, so nothing weird there.
Rusty.
