Right then, let's have a look at what's on offer for the Rade de Croisic area. Honestly, this is a tough forecast to write. For the next week and a half, we’re looking at barely a ripple. The swell is tiny – we're talking ankle to knee-high at best, with weak wave energy in the early days. It’s pretty heartbreaking.
Kicking off from Tuesday the 7th, we’ve got a glassy morning, but with waves only 1ft from the west and a period of 9 seconds, there's nothing to ride. The water is a warm 68°, which is a whopping 4° warmer than usual for this time of year, so it feels lovely, but there’s no surf to enjoy it in. Wednesday the 8th, Thursday the 9th, and Friday the 10th all offer cleanish conditions at times with light offshore breezes, but the swell stays stuck around 0.7-1ft. We go through the whole weekend and into the following week with hardly any change. There’s a long, frustrating gap with zero decent surf.
It’s not until Thursday the 16th of July that we finally see a pulse of energy. The swell bumps up to 4ft from the west, but the period is a short, weak 6 seconds, and the wind is howling onshore at 16-19 mph. The wave energy climbs, but the conditions will be a complete mess, blown out and choppy. That continues into Friday the 17th, with a similar 3-4ft swell from the west-southwest, but again, strong onshore winds and a short period make it pure slop for anyone but a dedicated kiter.
There is one brief moment that stands out as the best we’ve got. On Saturday the 18th of July morning, we have a 2ft swell from the west-southwest, but more importantly, the wind drops right off to a glassy 3 mph from the west. It’s a tiny window of clean, small surf. For a longboard or a foiler, that might be a laugh. The rest of that day and Sunday the 19th revert to choppy onshore junk.
Looking further out, into the third week of July, there are hints of slightly more energy, with a moderate reading of combined swell on Monday afternoon the 20th, but it’s accompanied by strong 22 mph onshore winds and a short 8-second period. It’s still no good for a proper paddle session.
Basically, the whole 16-day window is a write-off for quality waves. The setup is far more interesting for someone with a kite than a surfboard. We get a bit of swell, but the wind and period never line up to make anything of it. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that is just the way it goes sometimes. Keep an eye on the charts; it can’t stay this poor forever.
