The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s get real about what’s happening for the next couple of weeks. I’ll be straight with you – it’s a tough run ahead. There are no standouts, no magic windows. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions.
We start off on Wednesday the 19th with nothing doing. Small, weak swell with lumpy onshore wind. By Thursday the 20th, the swell picks up a bit to around 3ft to 4ft from the west, but that onshore wind is still ruining it. Friday the 21st is similar, with 3ft to 3ft west swell and cross-onshore wind making it choppy. Saturday the 22nd stays small and weak, 2ft, with light cross-shore wind, but it’s just not worth paddling out.
Sunday the 23rd and Monday the 24th are flat. Swell drops to 0.7ft to 0.3ft. The wind goes offshore and cross-offshore on those days, which is clean, but there is simply no wave energy. We’re looking at a gap of a few days with absolutely no surf on offer.
Then things get interesting, but not in a good way. Around Wednesday the 26th, a big pulse of swell arrives. We’re talking 8ft from the west-southwest, but the combined energy is massive (1331). Problem is, it’s coming with a fresh cross-onshore wind, so it’s going to be lumpy and messy. This is the sort of size that’s only for experts, and with that wind, it’s a struggle. By Thursday the 27th, it gets even bigger – 8ft from the west-southwest, with a long period of 11 seconds, and again onshore wind. The combined energy is huge (1832 in the morning, 1514 in the afternoon). That kind of long-period groundswell can make for powerful, clean lines at the right reef or point, but here the wind is just blowing it out. For a beach setup like this, it’s going to be a washing machine. Honestly, with that much swell and strong onshore wind, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
The big swell lingers into the end of August and start of September, but it’s never clean. The wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, and the quality is consistently rated as poor. The best we get is a light onshore breeze on Thursday the 3rd of September with 3ft west swell, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
Water temp is currently around 69°, which is about a degree and a half warmer than usual for the time of year – feels nice on the skin, but it won’t save the surf.
So, bottom line: no good options in this 16-day window. It’s a blank run, which is pretty normal for this area when the wind won’t cooperate. Keep an eye on it, forecasts change. For now, leave the board in the car.
