The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for the Rade de Croisic.
Honestly, I’m gonna level with you – this forecast is a tough one. We’re looking at a solid two-week stretch where the surf just isn’t cooperating. For the first week, we’ve got a bit of swell on the way, but it’s a real case of "the wrong wind with the right swell." The water’s currently sitting at 69°, which is about a degree warmer than usual for this time of year, so the temp is comfortable.
We jump into the action on Thursday, August 20th, with a 4ft swell from the west, but it’s a windy, messy onshore mess. The energy is moderate at 189, but the quality is poor.
Friday, August 21st, we see a drop in swell size to 3ft, still from the west, and the wind is cross-onshore. It’s a choppy, uninspiring 111 energy. Not our day.
Saturday, August 22nd, is the first glimmer of hope. The swell is tiny, only 2ft from the west, but the wind flips offshore from the ENE at 9 mph. The energy is a weak 34, but for a brief moment, it’ll be clean. Not enough to get excited about, but it’s a window.
Sunday, the 23rd, sees a fresh offshore breeze, but the swell is all but gone, down to 0.7ft. The energy is a mere 8. It’s a glassy lake, not a surf break.
The pattern continues flat and clean for the next few days, with a tiny 1.0ft swell on Monday. Then we get a spike on Tuesday, August 25th, with a 5ft SSW swell, but it’s a short-period 5-second wind swell, making it about 95 energy. The wind is cross-shore, making it messy.
The biggest swell of the run hits on Tuesday afternoon and into Wednesday, August 26th. We get a 7ft SW swell (energy 545) and then a 7ft WSW swell (energy 659). That’s a solid size, but the wind is either cross-onshore or onshore, absolutely ruining the quality. This is a prime candidate for a kite session rather than paddle surfing, as the conditions are just too blown out.
The rest of the week and into the next is a repeating story of onshore wind and moderate swell. We see a big jump in energy on Monday, August 31st, with a 6ft W swell and a long 12-second period, giving us a massive 1290 energy reading. But again, it’s blasted by onshore wind. This is a real shame, because that long-period groundswell would be something special at a point break, but here it’s just a messy, blown-out wave.
For the rest of the second week, swell drops away again, and we are back to small, weak, and onshore conditions through September 4th. There is simply no good window for a quality surf session in this entire 16-day outlook. It’s a blank run, plain and simple.
Rusty.
