The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
To be brutally honest, the first half of this forecast period is a real write-off. We’re looking at a solid stretch of nothing worthwhile. From Friday afternoon the 17th all the way through to Wednesday morning the 30th, the surf is just too small or too messy to bother with. It’s a long, flat gap until we finally see something stirring.
The only glimmer of hope, and it’s a proper one, comes right at the end of the month. The standout window is Thursday morning the 31st of July, running into the afternoon. The swell is building, with sets coming in at 4ft to 4ft from the west, and the period is a solid 10 seconds – that’s proper groundswell energy. The real beauty is the wind: it’s glassy, coming from the south at a mere 3 mph. This is going to be clean, lined-up surf. The combined energy is moderate to strong at 327, so there’s some punch in the water. This is your window, and it’s the only one worth circling on the calendar. Rade de Croisic is the spot, and it’s well exposed to that SW optimum direction.
The water temperature is a huge outlier. It’s sitting at 71°F, which is a massive 5°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual, so you’ll be in boardies or a shorty for sure.
The rest of the second week is a bit of a mixed bag. Swell energy picks up into some moderate three-digit numbers, but the wind is almost always onshore or cross-onshore, and the period is short, keeping the waves weak and junky. By the 30th, we see a big spike in energy, with 8ft swell and a 12-second period, but with 19 mph onshore winds, it’s going to be a messy, blown-out wall. That’s a kite-surfing day, not a paddle-surfing day.
Look, it’s a lean run. But that Thursday and Friday window at the end of July is the real deal. Keep your eyes on it.
Rusty.
