The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight from the get-go. The outlook for The Boiler is pretty grim. This is a reef break that’s already inconsistent, and over the next 16 days there’s just nothing doing. We’re talking a real drought of surf here. It’s one of those stretches where you’re better off leaving the boards in the car and going for a fish instead.
The water temperature is sitting at 69°, which is a whopping 10° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s very unusual, like swimming in a bath.
Let’s break it down. First up, Friday 17 July morning is glassy, dead calm, with a tiny 0.7ft swell from the west at 8 seconds. The combined energy is only 7 (weak energy). It’s just not enough to break properly. The afternoon is clean but still tiny. Saturday 18 July morning is glassy again, but the swell is 0.7ft at 8 seconds – energy is down to 6. It’s all just flat.
The rest of the week is a write-off. Sunday 19 July, Monday 20 July, Tuesday 21 July – all with swell heights of 0.3ft or 0.7ft, periods from 7 to 12 seconds, and energy readings barely in double digits. The wind is a mix of cross and cross-onshore, nothing that would help. The Boiler isn’t breaking.
Wednesday 22 July offers a bit of a tease: moderate offshore wind from the NNW at 16 mph, with a 0.7ft, 10-second west swell. The energy creeps up to 7. Still, 0.7ft is not rideable. Thursday 23 July has a glassy afternoon, but the swell is 0.3ft at 8 seconds. Energy is 1. It’s a pond.
Into the second week, it’s more of the same. Friday 24 July through to Monday 27 July, swell is 0.3ft to 0.7ft, periods from 8 to 13 seconds, energy levels from 1 to 5. The winds are a mess, mostly cross or cross-on. There’s a bit of a spike on Tuesday 28 July afternoon with a 0.7ft, 8-second swell and energy hitting 14, but it’s not enough. By Wednesday 29 July, the swell lifts to 1ft, 7 to 10 seconds, and energy gets to 45 in the afternoon. That’s the most energy we’ll see, but it’s still very weak wave energy. The wind is a strong cross-shore at 25 mph, making it a messy, lumpy setup. This is more of a kite surfer’s conditions than a paddle surfer’s.
Thursday 30 July has a glassy afternoon with 1.0ft, 8-second swell, energy 17. Still not enough. Friday 31 July afternoon sees the biggest swell height of the whole period: 3ft from the ESE, but with a 4-second period. That’s a short, gutless windswell, and the wind is a moderate cross-onshore at 16 mph. The energy is 24. It’s poor.
Saturday 1 August wraps it up with zero surf of note.
Bottom line: there are no good surf options in the 16-day window. The Boiler is rarely breaking, and this forecast confirms it. Sometimes an area just goes quiet, and this is one of those times. Stick to the pools.
