G’day, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the charts for The Boiler, and I gotta be straight with ya – it’s a pretty quiet stretch for the next couple of weeks. This is a reef break that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and we’re in one of those spells where it’s just not doing much. There’s a big gap of no real surf for over a week, from the start of July right through to the 16th.
The water temp is sittin’ at 67°, which is a massive 8° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s really unusual, so you’ll be in for a warm one if you get in.
Alright, let’s talk about those few days where things might get interesting. The first real glimmer of hope comes on Friday, July 17th. The morning session is the standout of the whole outlook. We’ve got 5 ft of swell comin’ from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds – short-period windswell, so it’ll be a bit lumpy and less powerful than a groundswell. The combined energy is a solid 275 (moderate), but the real winner here is the wind: dead calm, glassy conditions. That’s a major positive for a break that can be tricky. It’s gonna be super clean, but remember, this break is inconsistent, so you might have to wait your turn. It’s also intermediate-level, and with the swell at 5 ft, it’s fine for most. Crowds are “sometimes”, so you might have a few mates out, but nothing crazy.
The afternoon of the 17th gets messy with a 12 mph cross-shore wind, so don’t bother.
Saturday, July 18th, the swell pushes up a bit, with 6 ft from the WSW and a period of 7 seconds. The energy jumps to 336 (moderate). But the wind is a cross-shore, so it’ll be choppy. The morning has a 6 mph breeze, but the afternoon picks up to 9 mph. It’s marginal – surfable, but not special.
Then on Tuesday, July 21st, we get a last gasp. The afternoon has 7 ft of WSW swell, period 8 seconds, with the energy at 472 (moderate-strong). And the wind goes glassy again! That’s the second real bright spot. 7 ft is gettin’ into the bigger range – it’s a bit much for beginners, but for an intermediate surfer, this could be a fun, clean session with some push. The consistency is still an issue though.
Any other days in between are just not worth paddlin’ out for. The swell is tiny, the wind is messy, and the quality is poor. If you’re keen, aim for the morning of the 17th or the afternoon of the 21st. The rest? Better off workin’ on your tan.
Rusty.
