The Lowdown
Right, let’s be straight with you – this is a grim outlook for The Boiler. The entire 16-day window is a write-off for anything worth paddling out for. The swell never gets above 4 ft at its best, and the energy is laughable for most of the run, with a combined energy of only 16 on the first day and barely climbing into three digits by the very end of July. The water temperature is sitting at a very warm 69° – that’s a massive 9° above normal for this time of year, which is very unusual.
We kick off on Thursday, 16 July, with a tiny 0.3 ft of SW swell, but a cross-onshore ESE breeze at 9 mph makes it a mess. The afternoon cleans up a touch with a WNW wind, but the swell is gone. Friday morning, 17 July, goes glassy – dead calm – but with a pathetic 0.7 ft of west swell at 8 seconds, you’re just floating. That’s the pattern for the next week: glassy or light offshore mornings, but the swell is barely a ripple. The morning of Wednesday, 22 July, has a moderate offshore NNW wind at 16 mph, and you’ll get a clean 0.7 ft wave, but it’s a flat spell.
The only slight tick upwards comes right at the end. On Monday, 27 July, the swell finally pushes up to 3 ft to 3 ft from the WSW, but it’s plagued by light cross-onshore winds and the period is a short 5 seconds. The combined energy is still weak (57). By Wednesday, 29 July afternoon, the swell hits 4 ft from the WSW with a period of 7 seconds and the combined energy finally cracks 100 (101), but it’s under a moderate cross-shore wind that chops it up. The best of a bad bunch is Thursday, 30 July morning, with a 3 ft WSW swell, but again it’s cross-onshore and choppy. Friday, 31 July, is a total washout with a strong 25 mph SW cross-onshore wind and messy surf.
Honestly, if you’re desperate for any wave, the 4 ft swell on the 29th and 30th is the only thing that even qualifies as surf, but it’s poor quality and lumpy. The Boiler is inconsistent at the best of times, and this run is a blank. Don’t hold your breath – forecasts can change, but this one is a long shot.
