The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one for the Boiler. There’s no standout run of surf at all. The whole period is pretty much a write-off for a proper session, but I’ll walk you through what little we’ve got.
We kick off on Tuesday, 18th August, with a small 4ft swell from the west, but the period is a short 7 seconds, so it’s weak and lacking any punch. The combined energy is only 141 (moderate wave energy), but the wind is a cross-off 12 mph, keeping it clean. The trouble is, the quality is just poor—no real wave shape to speak of. The water temperature is 70°, which is a massive 8° warmer than normal, so it’s very unusual for this time of year, but you’ll be swimming in bathwater, not surfing.
The rest of the week is a downward slide. Wednesday and Thursday stay small, with the swell dropping to 3ft by Wednesday morning, and the wind switches around, mostly cross or cross-off, but the conditions are described as poor across the board. The energy levels drop to 62 (weak) on Wednesday morning and only tick up to 163 (moderate) on Thursday morning, but with a 4ft west swell at 7 seconds, it’s just not doing anything interesting.
Friday, 21st August, is the closest thing to a “maybe” session. Early morning you get a 2ft west swell with an 8-second period, and a light 6 mph cross-off wind from the ENE, keeping it clean. The energy is only 67 (weak), and the conditions are described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s the best of a bad lot. After that, it’s all downhill into the weekend.
Saturday and Sunday are tiny – 1.0ft and 0.3ft swells, with periods climbing to 10 and 14 seconds, but there’s no energy behind them. The combined energy on Saturday morning is 36 (weak). It’s glassy on Saturday morning and Sunday morning, but with waves that small, you’d be floating, not riding.
Then we hit a gap. From Monday, 24th August, through to the end of the month, the swell is either flat or tiny, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-on, with lumpy, choppy conditions. There’s a big spike on Tuesday, 25th August, with a 7ft southwest swell at 9 seconds – that’s a solid 1188 (very strong wave energy) – but the wind is a fresh 22 mph cross-on from the ESE, making it a messy, blown-out mess. That’s only for experts, and even then, it’s not worth it.
The first week of September is more of the same: small, weak swells, onshore winds, and poor quality. The Boiler is inconsistent at the best of times, and this run of blank days is normal for the area. Don’t hold your breath.
Signing off, Rusty.
