The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's a tough start. For the first ten days, from the 17th of July right through to the 26th, the surf is basically a no-go. We're talking tiny, un-rideable waves with combined energies barely registering (between 1 and 45). It's a proper dry spell, so you might as well wax the board and leave it in the shed. There's a few glassy mornings in there, but with nothing to push you around, it's just a flat lake.
Now, things start to show a glimmer of life on the 27th of July, Monday morning. The Boiler (The Boiler) finally sees a pulse of 5ft swell from the west, with a short period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to a moderate 214, and it's clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. It's not world-class, but it's surfable after a long wait. The water is running about 10°F warmer than usual for this time of year, so you can leave the thick steamer at home.
The afternoon of the 27th gets a bit bigger, pushing 5ft, but the wind swings cross-shore and cranks up to 19 mph, making it a lumpy mess. Not worth it.
The 28th of July, Tuesday morning, is probably your best bet across the whole period. We've got a 4ft west swell, 8-second period, and a clean cross-offshore breeze. The combined energy is a solid 163. It's a modest, clean little session perfect for an intermediate. The wind stays clean through the afternoon, but the swell drops a bit. The morning is the window.
After that, we're back into a slow decline. The 29th and 30th see smaller, weaker swell, and then the 31st of July is a complete write-off again with tiny surf and strong offshore winds. The 1st of August offers a last little gasp of 3ft to 4ft swell with clean winds, but it's weak with energies under 100. Not a standout, just a final chance to get wet.
So, to sum it up: the long wait pays off on the morning of the 28th. That's your one true highlight. Everything else is small, weak, or blown out. Keep your expectations in check, and you might snag a few fun ones.
Rusty.
