The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for The Boiler.
Right off the bat, the first week and a half is a real struggle. From Sunday the 19th of July all the way through to the end of the month, the swell is tiny – we’re talking 0.3ft to 1ft at best, with crap energy and mostly short-period dribble. The water temp is sitting at 69°F, which is a whopping 9°F above normal for this time of year – that’s a seriously weird anomaly, like swimming in a bath. But the waves? Basically nothing. The Boiler is an inconsistent reef break, and it’s living up to that name. There’s a long blank stretch of maybe 10 days with no real surf to speak of.
Then, around Tuesday the 28th of July, things try to kick off. We get a pulse of 5ft swell from the west early on Tuesday morning, with a moderate cross-offshore wind from the west-northwest at 16 mph. The combined energy jumps to 178 (moderate) – finally some life. Still, the period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a short, lumpy windswell, and the afternoon gets messy with a fresh 22 mph cross-shore. It’s not great, but it’s the best we’ve seen in a while. Wednesday the 29th drops back to 2ft with cleaner conditions, but the energy is weak again.
The real standout window opens up on Sunday the 2nd of August. Sunday morning looks glassy – zero wind, dead calm – with a 1ft west swell and a period of 9 seconds. The combined energy hits 65 (still weak, but the best of the whole run). It’s a tiny wave, but for a reef break that rarely gets clean, this is a rare moment of pure, glassy conditions. The afternoon picks up to 3ft from the west-southwest with a 5-second period, but it’s cross-shore and a bit lumpy. The real highlight is Monday the 3rd of August: the morning brings a 2ft west-southwest swell with an 8-second period, light offshore wind from the north at 6 mph, and the combined energy at 75. The notes say “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” – I’d call it the best of a tough run. It’s clean, small, and rideable. For a break that’s inconsistent and rarely turns on, this is the one to aim for. Crowds are possible here, so don’t expect to have it to yourself.
Beyond that, Tuesday the 4th fades again. So, overall, treat the first week as a write-off, but keep your eyes on Sunday the 2nd and Monday the 3rd of August – that’s your best bet for a paddle.
Rusty.
