The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for The Boiler over the next couple of weeks. Straight up – it’s a tough one. The finder’s showing zero surfable days across the whole 16-day window. Every single period is marked as poor surf conditions, so I’m calling it: there’s no good surf on offer here. The Boiler is an inconsistent reef break anyway, so a blank run like this isn’t a huge surprise. Still, it stings when you’re itching for a wave.
The water is running way warmer than usual for this time of year – about 5°F warmer than the long-term average. That’s a big anomaly, more than three degrees off, so you’ll notice the difference if you’re in the water. The first few days from Saturday 18 July through the week are tiny – ankle slappers at best, with swell heights under 0.7 ft and periods all over the place. Winds are mostly light and variable, with a few glassy moments like Monday morning 20 July (period 12 seconds but only 0.3 ft). That’s useless for surfing though.
Toward the end of the first week, around Wednesday 22 July, there’s a bit of offshore wind (NNW 25 km/h) but the swell is still only 0.7 ft. The energy is weak – combined energy values are single digits up to 10. On Saturday 25 July we see a bump: 5 ft swell from the west with a 7-second period, and combined energy hitting 179 (moderate). But the wind is cross-off in the morning, then fresh cross-shore in the afternoon. Still, the wave comment says poor surf conditions – likely because the period is short and the break is inconsistent. That swell is too small to really get excited about, and the direction (W) is not the optimum SW that The Boiler prefers.
The rest of the second week is more of the same: tiny waves, messy winds, and never a clean, rideable setup. A few glassy moments like Wednesday 29 July afternoon (light rain, glassy, but only 2 ft) and Thursday 30 July morning (2 ft, E 5 km/h cross) – but still tagged as poor. The swell direction on 30 July is from the east, which is way off from the optimum SW. The final days of the forecast, into early August, are flat again.
So, bottom line: don’t bother paddling out at The Boiler for the next 16 days. If you’re desperate, maybe a kite would work on those bigger breezy days, but for a surfboard it’s a no-go. Forecasts can change, but right now it’s a dust-off.
Rusty.
