The Lowdown
Alright, let’s cut to the chase. The Boiler is looking like a long, dry spell for the next 16 days. There’s a big gap of nothing but tiny, choppy junk from now until the 4th of September. The first real hint of anything surfable is on Friday morning, the 4th of September, and it’s still a bit of a gamble.
The Boiler (reef) is inconsistent at the best of times, and the water’s sitting at a notably warm 69°, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. Nice for a dip, but not for the waves.
From the 23rd of August through to the 3rd of September, it’s basically a flat spell. We’re talking tiny, short-period slop, with messy cross-shore winds and poor surf conditions. The only bright spot is that glassy, calm Sunday afternoon on the 23rd, but with a swell height of just 0.3ft, you’re not going anywhere. There’s a brief pulse of moderate wave energy on the morning of the 27th of August, but it’s cross-on and choppy. The 29th of August sees a jump in swell height to 4ft-7ft, but the wind is a fresh-to-strong cross-onshore, turning it into a lumpy mess. The 30th is similar, with strong winds and messy cross-chop. The 31st of August cleans up with cross-offshore winds, but the swell drops back to 2ft-2ft. Not worth paddling out for.
Now, the one real hope in this window is Friday morning, the 4th of September. The swell jumps to 8ft from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds, giving us strong wave energy. The wind is a gentle cross-shore, so it’ll be a bit bumpy but not completely blown out. This is the best on offer, but it’s still a marginal forecast. The afternoon of the 4th drops to 6ft with a light cross-on, so it’ll be a bit scratchy. The 5th and 6th of September bring similar-sized swell, but the wind turns onshore again, making it lumpy. Then on the 7th of September, the swell gets serious with a 10ft to 12ft groundswell from the WSW, but the wind is a strong cross-shore and the wave energy is massive. That’s big, powerful, and messy – experts only, and even then, it’s going to be a battle.
So, the only true standout is the morning of the 4th of September. Get out there if you can, but don’t expect perfection. The rest of the window is a long stretch of waiting for something better.
