The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty. Let's talk about what's on offer for the coming weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – it's looking bleak. We're staring down a long, dry spell here. The Boiler is the only spot in the frame, and it's not exactly firing. For the first week and a half or so, we're looking at tiny, weak waves and a whole lot of nothing. The water is sitting at 70°, which is a solid 9° warmer than normal for this time of year – that's very unusual.
From Saturday the 22nd right through to Wednesday the 27th of August, it’s basically a flat spell. You’ve got swell heights barely cracking 1ft, with periods all over the place but no real energy. The combined energy is mostly in the single or low double digits (values like 26 or 22). It's poor surf, plain and simple. There's a glassy moment Sunday afternoon the 23rd, but on 0.6ft waves, you're better off with a paddleboard.
Thursday the 28th of August is where things start to perk up, but it's still a mess. The swell bumps up to 5ft from the SW with a period of 9 seconds, and the energy climbs to 307. That's moderate energy, but it's coming with rain and a cross-onshore wind. The quality is gonna be poor. Friday the 29th sees the swell push over 5ft, hitting 6ft in the morning and 7ft in the afternoon. For a reef break, that's getting into the expert-only zone, especially with the wind cranking at 22 mph. The energy on Saturday afternoon hits 420 – that's strong – but it's lumpy and cross-shore. Not what you'd call clean.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of Monday the 1st of September. The swell drops back to 3ft from the WSW, the period is 7 seconds, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the WNW at 9 mph. The energy is only 79, so it's weak, but it'll be the cleanest wave we've seen in a while. It's the only time in the whole run where conditions look half-decent for a quiet paddle. This spot is inconsistent, so don't expect it to hold.
After that, it's back to poor conditions. Wind ramps up again, and the swell stays small and messy. There's a moment on Friday the 5th of September where the swell is 4ft with 154 energy, but the wind is a fresh 19 mph cross-on. That's a washing machine, not a surf.
Honestly, the only real suggestion I have is to keep an eye on the morning of Monday the 1st of September. It's a long way out, so treat it as a promising long-shot. The rest of this run is a write-off for surfing. For the beach-and-reef setup here, with the strong winds and poor quality on the bigger days, it's looking more like a kite session than a paddle surf.
Rusty, signing off.
