The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get straight into it. The forecast for The Boiler over the next couple of weeks is a tough one, I'm not gonna lie. We’re looking at a real mix of small, weak, and messy conditions for the most part, with just a couple of brief windows where it might actually be worth getting wet.

First things first, the water is sitting at a balmy 70°, which is a solid 9° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a big deal—you won’t need the thickest suit in the bag, that’s for sure.

Right now, and for the next several days, it’s pretty bleak. The swell is small and weak. On Monday afternoon we’ve got a cross-shore breeze with a cross-chop, making things ugly. The following days up to the 22nd just see a mix of onshore winds and tiny waves, with the combined energy barely getting into double digits, like 54 and 137. It’s flat and bumpy, not worth your time.

There’s a brief tease on the 22nd afternoon when the wind drops to glassy, but the swell is a pathetic 1 ft. You’d be floating around out there, waiting for nothing. The 23rd is even smaller, with a long-period (14 seconds) swell that’s got no energy behind it, just a whisper of a wave.

Things stay dead until the tail end of the month. The 27th morning is the first real chance, with a clean 3 ft of swell from the W, even if it is only 7 seconds. It’s surfable, but nothing to write home about.

That brings us to the real standout of the whole period. The 29th of August, Saturday morning. The swell jumps to a solid 7 ft from the WSW, with a period of 9 seconds. The energy reading is 1062, which is strong, and the wind is cross-offshore and clean. This is the one to circle on the calendar. It’s got proper power behind it, and the conditions should be clean. This is a proper reef setup, so that long period energy will be holding up well. This is the day for a more experienced surfer, as that size is getting too much for beginners.

After that, it’s a mess again. The wind swings onshore and builds into a gale on the 30th, blowing everything out. The waves do push back up to 8 ft on the 31st and into September 1st, but it’s lumpy, chopped, and blown out. That’s not surfing, that’s a battle. For the more adventurous, this might look like a kitesurfing session, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.

So, in short: the 29th is your day. Everything else is a waiting game.

Rusty.
