The Lowdown
Alright, I’m gonna be straight with you – it’s a rough stretch ahead. The Boiler is the only break we’ve got on the cards, and it’s a reef setup that’s inconsistent and rarely breaks, so when it’s flat, it’s flat.
Right now, the water is sitting at a balmy 70°, which is a whopping 9° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, like a warm bath.
Friday the 21st of August, there’s a tiny pulse in the morning. We’re looking at 2ft of swell from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is weak at 75. The wind is offshore from the NNW at 12 mph, so it’ll be clean, but honestly, it’s barely surfable. By the afternoon, the swell drops to 1.0ft and the wind goes cross-off – not worth paddling out for.
Saturday the 22nd starts glassy with a light NNE breeze at 3 mph, but the swell is still only 1.0ft. It’s a small, clean morning, but there’s just no power. The period ticks up to 10 seconds, but the energy is only 32. Don’t get your hopes up.
From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the month, it’s a bleak run. The swell never really gets above 3ft, and the wind is almost always cross or cross-on, often fresh or strong. The energy stays low, mostly under 100, and a lot of the time it’s described as “poor surf conditions.” There’s a day or two with a bit more size – like Sunday the 30th of August, with 5ft from the WSW at 8 seconds, and energy hitting 415 (moderate), but the wind is cross-on and it’s still a messy, choppy mess. Not one for the quiver.
The first week of September doesn’t look any better. Swell stays small, wind is cross or cross-on, and the energy is weak. The only flicker of hope is on Monday the 31st of August morning, when the swell hits 6ft from the W at 8 seconds and energy jumps to 725 (moderate), but the wind is cross-on from the SW at 12 mph, so it’s still going to be choppy and messy. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a clean surf day.
The best of the whole outlook, if you can call it that, is probably Sunday the 30th of August morning. The swell is 5ft from the WSW, period 8 seconds, and energy is 415. The wind is light cross-on from the SSW at 6 mph, so it’s not total chaos. But it’s still only a marginal option at best. The reef is inconsistent, so don’t bank on it.
Bottom line: there’s no standout surf here. The Boiler is rarely breaking, and when it does, the conditions are ordinary. If you’re desperate, maybe have a look on the 30th of August morning, but otherwise, keep your board in the car and wait for a better window. Forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a tough run.
