The Lowdown

Right, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer.

To be straight with you, the next 16 days are a tough watch. The swell is tiny and the wind is messy for most of it. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf, but there might be a couple of windows where things get interesting for the brave.

The only spot in the game is The Boiler, a reef break that’s inconsistent at the best of times. The water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a whopping 9° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you’ll be in for a warm one.

We kick off Saturday, August 22nd, with a tiny 1-foot swell from the WSW and a 10-second period. The combined energy is weak (36). It’s glassy in the morning with a light NNE breeze, so it’ll be clean, but there’s just no push. The afternoon turns cross-shore and it’s still poor.

Sunday the 23rd is even smaller, with 0.3 feet to 0.7 feet. Glassy again Sunday afternoon, but you’re just bobbing around. The pattern continues through the whole of next week. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – we’re talking 0.3 feet to 2 feet of weak, short-period junk. The wind is mostly cross-shore or cross-onshore, often fresh, which just chops it up. The energy stays below 30 (24 on Tuesday morning). It’s a write-off.

Thursday the 27th shows a bit of a pulse. By the afternoon, we get 4 feet of SW swell with an 8-second period, and the energy jumps to 210 (moderate). But it’s onshore with a SSW wind at 15 mph, and there’s a risk of thunderstorms. Poor conditions.

Friday the 28th afternoon is where we get our first real standout. The swell builds to 5 feet from the W, period 8 seconds, and the energy is a solid 516 (strong). The wind swings NNW at 15 mph, giving us a clean, cross-offshore breeze. Conditions look good. This is a decent window for an intermediate surfer, but at 5 feet, beginners might find it a bit much.

Saturday the 29th holds some 4 feet to 3 feet swell, but the wind turns cross-shore and moderate, so it won’t be as clean.

The second week gets rocky. There’s a pulse on Monday the 31st with 5 feet to 5 feet of W swell, but the wind is fresh and cross-shore, making it lumpy. The energy is moderate to strong (203-182). Not great.

The real promise comes right at the end. Thursday, September 3rd morning, we see 5 feet of WSW swell with an 8-second period, and the energy is 274 (strong). The wind is gentle and cross-shore, giving us slight cross-chop. It’s only rated as marginal, but it’s the best of a bad bunch. The afternoon gets blown out again.

Friday, September 4th morning has 5 feet of WSW swell, 8-second period, energy 293 (strong), but again a fresh cross-shore kills the quality. The energy is there, but the wind is a problem.

For the standout, I’d point you to Friday afternoon, August 28th at The Boiler. That 5 feet of W swell with clean cross-offshore wind is the best call in the whole 16 days. The second best is probably Thursday morning, September 3rd, but it’s a gamble with the marginal conditions.

Other than that, it’s a long, flat, windy wait. The break is a reef, so it can handle the long-period stuff, but we don’t get any of that. The consistent theme is poor surf, and with this setup, it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing on those windy days.

Rusty.
