The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Lookin’ at the charts for the next couple of weeks and, well, it’s a bit of a flat spell for Surfside Jetty. We’ve got a solid gap of no surf on offer until Tuesday morning, the 25th of August, so don’t even bother paddling out before then.

From Tuesday morning the 25th, we finally see a tiny pulse of energy. Swell’s a measly 2ft from the SW, but with a period bumping up to 16 seconds, there’s a touch of groundswell quality. The wind is dead calm from the SW at 3 mph, which is about as glassy as it gets. The combined wave energy is still weak at 282. It’s a quiet, clean morning but the waves are gonna be small and inconsistent. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing weird there.

The rest of the week is a real struggle. Wednesday the 26th packs a bit more punch, with the swell hitting 4ft from the S and energy jumping to 941 (moderate), but the wind is cross-on from the S at 9 mph, making it choppy and messy. That’s a no-go for a clean session. Thursday morning the 27th sees a similar 4ft swell from the S, but again, it’s cross-onshore and the surf is poor.

We get a glimmer on Friday morning the 28th. The swell drops to 2ft from the SSW, but the period stretches to 19 seconds – that’s a very long period groundswell. And you guessed it, the wind is almost glassy from the SSW at 3 mph. The energy is moderate at 484. This is the best on offer all week. It’s still a small wave, but that long period is gonna make it steep and punchy for a jetty wave. The break is inconsistent though, so you’ll be waiting for those sets. It’s a long-range call, so don’t hold your breath, but it’s the closest thing to a standout.

The rest of the run into the first week of September is more of the same: small swells, cross or onshore winds, and poor or marginal conditions. A few mornings on the 30th and 31st have light winds, but the swell is tiny and the energy is weak. The long period swells are more interesting for a point or reef, but for a jetty they might be a bit too straight-breaking.

The very end of the run, around the 4th and 5th of September, we see a few pulses of 2ft to 3ft from the SSW, but the wind is either onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s not clean. The best chance for a clean wave is that Friday morning the 28th, but keep your expectations low. It’s a tough outlook.

Rusty.
