The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for Surfside Jetty.
To be straight with you, the next few weeks are looking pretty flat and frustrating. There’s a big gap of nothing special at the start. From Saturday 18th July right through until the morning of Thursday 30th July, we’re stuck with weak, small, and mostly messy surf. The swell is tiny, the wind is almost always on it or cross-onshore, and the wave comment is either “poor” or “marginal.” It’s a real lull. You’d be better off waxing the longboard and just enjoying the water temp, which is a very unusual 69°, much warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real standout, and really the only one worth mentioning, comes on the morning of Thursday 30th July. We’ve got a jump in swell to 5 ft coming from the S, with a moderate energy reading (1271). The wind is a light cross-onshore from the S at 6 mph, so it’s clean, with only small ripples. The period is a middling 15 seconds, which is decent groundswell. This is about as good as it gets in this window. The size is manageable for most, but at 5 ft it’s still a bit punchy for absolute beginners. The crowd profile says “often,” so expect a few heads out there.
The swell builds a touch more on Friday 31st July, with 5 ft from the S and a strong energy reading (1077). The wind is light and onshore, keeping it clean. Still, the quality is only “marginal,” so it’s a step up from the dead days, but not a world-beater. After that, it drops back down into the smaller range through the first weekend of August.
So, the call is: if you’ve got a window, the morning of Thursday 30th July is the best on offer. It’s not epic, but it’s the only time the sea shows a bit of life. The water's warm, the wind’s light, and the swell has some push. Just don’t expect perfection.
Rusty.
