The Lowdown
Alright, let’s be honest with you, the surf’s looking pretty dead for a good stretch. Surfside Jetty is the only spot on the map here, and we're in for a long, flat spell.
Water’s running a touch warmer than usual for this time of year, about 70°, so at least it won't be cold while you're staring at the ocean.
We’ve got a solid run of poor conditions and no real surf energy from Monday the 17th all the way through to the morning of Friday the 28th. That’s a long, dry gap, with wave heights barely breaking 2ft and mostly cross-onshore or onshore winds chopping things up. The swell energy is weak, mostly in the 2-digit range in the 70-260 zone, so there’s just no push. You’d be better off finding something else to do.
Now, things start to stir a bit on Friday the 28th. The afternoon sees the swell energy jump to a moderate 381, with a 2ft SSW swell rolling in on a long 20-second period. It’s still not great, and the winds are onshore, but it’s the first sign of life.
The real highlight, and I mean the only thing worth circling on the calendar, is the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. The swell jumps to 4ft from the SSW with a solid 18-second period, and the energy jumps way up to a strong 757. It’s still only marginal, with light cross-onshore winds, but this is the biggest and most powerful swell of the entire forecast. Sunday the 30th is similar, with 4ft waves and a strong 727 energy, but it’s also cross-onshore.
These are the only two sessions with any real push. It’s not huge, but for a spot that’s been dead for two weeks, a 4ft SSW groundswell is a proper event. The 18-second period means it’ll have some punch, but keep in mind a long period like that can make it sectiony at a jetty. It’s an advanced break anyway, and with waves over 3ft, it’s not for beginners. Since it’s so inconsistent and only rarely showing any life, you gotta be on it when it happens.
After that, it fades back down to the 3ft range by Monday, with the energy dropping back to the 400s. The long-range stuff for the start of September looks flat again, so the call is to make the most of that Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th window. It’s a long way out, so don’t book the day off work just yet, but it’s the only promising light in this otherwise dark tunnel.
