Table - best surf conditions forecast for Surfside Jetty over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it. We’ve got a long stretch ahead for Surfside Jetty, and I’ll be honest with you – it’s a bit of a slow burn. The first week and a half is a real struggle, but there’s a late pulse that could get the heart pumping if you’re patient.
Right now, and for the next several days, it’s pretty flat and messy. We’re looking at small, weak swells mostly from the SSW, with heights hanging around 1ft to 3ft. The combined energy is weak, usually in the hundreds (like 146 or 383), and the wind is a constant cross-on or onshore breeze. That’s a recipe for choppy, poor surf. Don’t bother getting the board waxed until at least the second week.
There’s a bit of a glimmer on Sunday the 12th, with a swell holding at 3ft and a 14-second period from the SSW, but the wind is still cross-on and the conditions are only marginal. The energy is still weak (327). It’s a tease, not a session.
The real quiet period hits from Monday the 14th through to the 18th. Swell sizes drop even further, down to 1ft to 2ft, and the energy dips into the low 100s. It’s going to be a flat spell, plain and simple. Not much to get excited about.
Now, hold onto your leash because the game changes on Sunday the 19th of July. The forecast shows a new S swell pushing in, starting at 4ft in the morning with a very long 20-second period. The combined energy jumps to a strong 1166. The wind is onshore in the morning, but the sheer size and period are a huge upgrade. This is a groundswell, and at that long period, it’s going to be breaking straight at a beach break like Surfside, but the power is real. The afternoon sees the swell jump to 5ft, and the energy hits 1729. The wind is still cross-on, so it’s going to be a bit lumpy, but the size is there.
The standout, the one you’ve been waiting for, is Monday the 20th of July. This is the best on offer. We’re looking at a solid 7ft S swell in the morning, with a 15-second period. The combined energy is a massive 2089. The wind is light and cross-on from the south, so it’s going to be clean with just small wind ripples. That’s a big swell for Surfside. At 7ft, this is for experienced surfers only – beginners, stay on the sand. The swell direction is bang on from the S, which is excellent for this spot. The water temp is about 67°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
After that peak, it drops off quickly. By Tuesday the 21st, the swell is back down to 5ft and the energy drops to 564, and the winds turn onshore again. By Wednesday the 22nd, we’re back to marginal 3ft surf. The rest of the week fades into nothing.
So, to wrap it up: the first ten days are a write-off, with a solid week of flat to poor surf. The only real window is the 19th and 20th of July, with Monday the 20th being the big day for experienced surfers ready to paddle out on a solid, clean 7ft S groundswell. Don’t hold your breath for anything else.
Rusty.
