The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s going on in the water for the next couple of weeks.

To be straight with you, the outlook for Anderson Street is a long, drawn-out stretch of mediocrity. We’ve got a bit of a wait on our hands. The first real chance to get wet isn’t until Monday morning, the 7th of September, and even that’s a tough sell. The forecast gives us a 5 ft SSW swell with a period of 13 seconds, which is a decent groundswell, but it’s marred by a cross-shore breeze. The combined swell energy is moderate (971), which is promising, but the morning window is only rated as marginal.

Monday afternoon, the wind picks up to 12 mph from the west, turning it cross-onshore and choppy, so that’s a write-off. Tuesday the 8th sees the swell drop to 3 ft, and the wind stays cross-onshore, making for a pretty uninspiring session. The rest of that week, right through to Sunday the 13th, the swell hovers around 2 ft to 3 ft with periods between 14 and 17 seconds. The wind is almost always either cross-onshore or onshore, and the surf quality is consistently rated as poor. There’s really nothing to get excited about.

We hit a bit of a lull from the 14th to the 15th, with swell dropping to 1 ft to 2 ft. The second week of the forecast doesn’t offer much redemption. From the 16th of September, the swell picks up slightly to 2 ft to 3 ft, with periods ranging from 15 to 19 seconds, but the wind is relentless – mostly cross-onshore or onshore, and the wave comment is repeatedly “poor surf conditions” or “marginal.” The standout morning would be the 21st of September, with a 3 ft SW swell and a period of 18 seconds, giving us moderate wave energy (530). The wind is light onshore, but it’s still marginal. The water temperature is about average for this time of year, so no surprises there.

The bottom line: this is a tough stretch for Anderson Street. It’s a sandbar break that’s fairly consistent, but the wind is just not cooperating. The best bet would be the morning of the 21st, but even that’s a gamble. If you’re desperate, you might get a few awkward ones, but don’t expect any magic. Keep an eye on the forecasts, but for now, I’d be looking elsewhere.

Rusty.
