The Lowdown

G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s break down Anderson Street, this sandbar that’s fairly exposed to a SW swell. I’ll be straight with you—this forecast is a real test of patience. The water temp is about 69°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so at least an early session won’t have you chilled.

The whole 16-day window is mostly quiet. There’s a long dry spell from now right through until the end of next week. Wednesday the 19th starts with a small 3ft SSW groundswell, long period of 15 seconds, and a light offshore breeze in the morning. The combined energy is moderate (327), but the surf is marginal at best, with questionable tide conditions. It’s really just a whisper of a wave. The afternoons go cross-onshore with a gentle breeze, chopping things up. From Thursday the 20th all the way through to Friday the 28th, it’s just poor surf day after poor day—tiny swells of 1ft to 2ft, mostly cross-onshore winds, and no real energy to speak of. The combined energy numbers stay in the weak to moderate range (125 to 363), but it’s never enough to get excited about. There’s a gap of over a week here with no real recommendations.

The first real standout finally shows up on Saturday the 29th of August. The morning brings a 3ft SSW swell, period of 17 seconds, and a light offshore wind from the SW. The combined energy jumps to a solid moderate 649, and the swell direction is spot on for Anderson Street. It’s still just a marginal surf call, but that long period groundswell will produce some clean, well-shaped waves at this sandbar, with long gaps between sets making paddling out easier. The winds are light and offshore, which is a major positive—expect glassy, clean conditions. Crowds are possible here, so get in early. This is the best on offer in the whole period.

Sunday the 30th still has some size, with 4ft SSW swell and 15-second period, but the morning goes cross-onshore with a light breeze, introducing small ripples. The energy is still strong (571), but it’s not as clean as Saturday. After that, surf fades back to small, poor conditions through to the end of the forecast on Thursday the 3rd of September.

So, bottom line: sit tight for over a week, then mark Saturday the 29th of August as your dawn patrol. It’s the one true standout in a fairly flat run.
