The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s shaping up for Anderson Street over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a bit of a tough stretch. The forecast is calling for a lot of onshore and cross-onshore winds that keep the surface messy, and the swell just doesn’t seem to have any real punch or direction for us. Most of the time, the surf is poor, with only a few days where it gets to that marginal stage. The first solid week is pretty much a write-off, with constant light to moderate breezes ruining the surface. The waves are small, usually under 3 ft, and the wind is from the south or southwest, which is cross-on.
We do get a bit of a pulse of energy around the 24th and 25th of July. The combined energy jumps up to 745 and even 1122 on the 25th morning, which is solid, but the swell direction is SSW and the period is long, at 24 and 21 seconds, which can make things tricky. That long period groundswell can be a bit straight for a beach break like Anderson Street, and the wind is still cross-on, so it’s likely to be a bit bumpy. The water temp is a touch warmer than normal at 69° around the start, which is nice, but it’s not enough to save the surf.
The best chance for a decent paddle might be the morning of the 27th of July. We’ve got a 3 ft swell from the SSW with a period of 18 seconds, and the wind is a light southerly at 9 mph, coming cross-on. The combined energy is 966, so there’s enough push, but it’s still going to be a bit choppy. It’s a marginal call, and the crowds are "sometimes" around, so you might get a few waves if you time it right, but it’s not a standout.
Further out, into the end of the month and start of August, the swell drops off again. The energy backs down to the 200-300 range, and the waves stay around 2 ft to 3 ft, with more onshore wind. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor conditions from the 28th of July right through to the 1st of August. There’s no real highlight to get excited about.
If you’re a kitesurfer, those cross-onshore days with a bit of chop might be more interesting than for a paddle surfer. For now, the board stays on the sand.
Rusty.
