The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this is a tough one for the 16-day window ahead. We’re looking at St Jean, which is a reef set-up that only rarely breaks, and looking at the charts, it’s just not happening. We’ve got a blank run from now, which is today, Thursday the 6th of August, all the way through to the end of the period on Friday the 21st of August. That’s a solid two weeks plus with no real surf on offer.
The water temperature at St Jean is sitting at 78°F with an anomaly of 5°F warmer than usual – so it’s running much warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s a real standout in itself, but it’s no comfort when there’s no swell.
The strongest wind we see is a 25 mph cross-offshore from the NW on the 18th and 19th, with the system looking clean, but with zero swell energy (0) in the water, it’s just a flat, clean sea. On the 9th and 10th we get glassy mornings, again with no swell. There’s a little blip on the 10th afternoon with a 1 ft SW swell and a weak energy reading of 7, but the period is a short 5 seconds and the wind is cross-onshore – that’s not going to do anything at a reef that rarely turns on. The rest of the period is either flat or has tiny, weak pulses of 0.3 ft to 1 ft with periods under 5 seconds and mostly onshore or cross-off winds. It’s just not worth paddling out for.
For a spot like St Jean, this kind of blank run is more normal for the area. It tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, but for now, the board stays on the rack.
