The Lowdown
Hey, Rusty again. Let’s talk about St Jean.
Honest truth? There’s nothing going on here for the next 16 days. Zero surf on offer from August 6th all the way through August 21st. Every forecast block says "poor surf conditions." That’s a long dry stretch – no waves worth a mention.
Thursday the 6th starts with clear skies and a light cross-off breeze in the morning, but there’s no swell – 0 feet height, no period, no energy at all. The combined swell energy is 0 (weak). That afternoon the wind picks up to 19 mph from the WNW, still cross-off, but the ocean is flat. Clean, but useless.
Friday the 7th, Saturday the 8th, Sunday the 9th – same pattern. Glassy mornings, some onshore wind afternoons, not one wave to ride. By Monday the 10th, we finally get a tiny bump: a 0.3 ft swell from the south, 6-second period, combined energy of just 1 (weak). That’s barely a wrinkle.
The rest of the first week and into the second week is more of the same. Tuesday the 11th afternoon shows a 2 ft, 3-second windswell from the west (energy 5, weak), but with the wind onshore, it’s junk. Wednesday the 12th, Thursday the 13th, Friday the 14th… all clean-looking but flat. Saturday the 15th morning has a 1.0 ft, 4-second swell from the southwest (energy 2, weak) under glassy conditions – still poor.
Monday the 17th morning brings a 2 ft easterly swell, 3-second period, with clean cross-off wind, and energy of 8 (weak). Still too small and short-period to do anything with. Tuesday the 18th morning is glassy with a 0.7 ft SSE swell (5-second period, energy 3, weak). By Wednesday the 19th and Thursday the 20th, the wind is howling at 22 mph from the NW, cross-off, but there’s no swell behind it.
Friday the 21st August morning has a light offshore breeze from the north and clean water, but again – flat as a pancake.
St Jean is a rare-break reef, exposed to the south, and it’s just not cooperating. For the full 16 days, there’s nothing to ride. If you’re a paddle surfer, forget it. The clean winds and flat water actually make this look more interesting for kite surfing than surfing – but even then, the wind’s too light most mornings. This kind of blank run is normal here when the swell doesn’t line up.
