The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for La Nartelle over the next couple of weeks.
Well, I’ll be honest with you, it’s a tough stretch ahead. The charts are showing a whole lot of flatness for this sheltered south-east facing beach. The water is sitting at a very warm 83.5°F, which is *much warmer* than normal for this time of year – that’s a solid 9.0°F above the average. It feels like a bathtub out there, but unfortunately, there’s no wave energy to go with it.
The first real flicker of life doesn’t show up until the 26th of August. Wednesday morning brings a tiny east swell of 1.6ft with a period of 5 seconds, but the combined energy is only 11 – that’s weak. By the afternoon, it picks up slightly to 2.0ft from the east, period still short at 5 seconds, and the energy climbs to a still-modest 17. The wind is offshore from the west at 6 mph, keeping it clean. It’s surfable, but only just. For a beginner, these tiny, weak waves are about as user-friendly as it gets, though there’s barely enough push to stand up.
The real standout, if you can call it that, is the morning of the 29th of August. Saturday the 29th serves up a 2.3ft east swell with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy finally creeps up to 39, which is still in the weak range but is the best we see. With a light cross-offshore breeze from the NNW at 6 mph, it’ll be clean. It’s still tiny, but for this stretch, it’s the pick of the bunch. The afternoon of the same day sees a 3.3ft south swell with a longer 8-second period and energy jumping to 117 – that’s moderate energy and the biggest size of the outlook. But the wind swings cross-onshore from the ESE at 9 mph, making it choppy and messy. That south swell is better in the water, but the wind ruins it.
After that, it drops right back off into flatness. The morning of the 1st of September brings strong offshore winds from the WNW at 25 mph, with a tiny 0.7ft swell. The wind is so strong it’ll be a battle to even get out, and there’s no wave to catch. Honestly, for most of this 16-day window, you’re looking at a shed-load of flat days. The week of the 17th through the 25th is almost a total washout, with nothing worth paddling for. If you’re desperate, the 29th morning is your best shot for a clean, tiny knee-high wave on a longboard.
Stay patient, mate. It’s a quiet spell.
