The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, same story in feet. Let’s be straight – this is a tough one. The only break with any real forecast data in this region is La Nartelle, and over the next 16 days, the surf just isn’t showing up. There are a few tiny bumps here and there, but nothing that’s going to get a surfer out of bed. You’re looking at a long, flat stretch with a few days of clean conditions and barely a ripple.
Starting off, the outlook is grim. On Sunday the 23rd of August, we’ve got a tiny 0.3ft S swell with a short 5-second period – that’s barely a knee-high wobble. The wind is offshore from the NNW at 6 mph in the morning, so it’s clean, but there’s no energy to work with (combined energy of 1). The water is a very unusual 81°, which is 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a standout in itself, but not for surfing. By Sunday afternoon, the wind swings onshore from the E at 9 mph with a 2ft E swell – still poor.
Monday the 24th of August sees no swell height recorded, just a cross-shore wind. Tuesday the 25th is a write-off with offshore wind but zero swell. This pattern of flat, clean conditions or light onshore breeze with no real swell continues right through until Friday the 28th of August, when we finally get a tiny pulse – a 2ft S swell on Friday morning with a fresh offshore W wind at 9 mph, making it clean. But that combined energy is only 22 – weak, weak, weak. Friday afternoon still offshore but dropping to 1ft.
After that, it’s back to zero swell for days on end. Saturday the 29th of August through to Monday the 31st shows clean offshore wind but nada in the water. There’s a fleeting moment on Tuesday the 1st of September with glassy conditions (N wind 3 mph) but only a 0.3ft NE swell – absolutely flat.
Even the later outlook into the first week of September offers nothing. Swell heights are either blank or under 1ft, periods are short, and energy is barely registering. The best you could say is that the wind is often offshore or light, so if you’re desperate to float around on a foamie in warm water, there are windows. But for real surf? Forget it. This is a surfing drought.
There is no standout session. The only “maybe” is the Friday the 28th of August morning session – clean, tiny, but at least you could practice pop-ups. For anything more, you’d be kiting in this setup, not paddling.
Rusty.
