The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a 16-day window here, and honestly, there’s not a single session that I’d call a stand-out. The whole period is a bit of a write-off for decent waves, but let’s walk through it.
Right now, we’ve got nothing. The first real surf recommendation doesn’t show up until Wednesday the 15th of July at La Nartelle (France). That morning you’re looking at a tiny 1ft swell from the south, with a weak 6-second period, so the energy is barely there (11). The water is a balmy 80°, which is a whopping 9° warmer than usual for this time of year – that’s really unusual, mate. Wind is light cross-onshore, so it’s not clean, and the surf is just poor. That afternoon, it drops to 1.0ft with the same choppy conditions. Not worth paddling out.
Thursday the 16th and Friday the 17th are even worse – swell drops to 0.7ft, periods are down to 3 seconds, and the combined energy is basically zero (1 to 3). The wind stays cross-onshore, keeping it messy. Saturday the 18th and Sunday the 19th have no swell at all (0 energy), so it’s flat. Saturday morning does go glassy for a bit with a light cross-offshore wind, but with no waves, there’s nothing to ride.
We then hit a long gap. From Monday the 20th through to Saturday the 26th of July, the swell stays tiny – never getting above 2ft, with periods between 3 and 5 seconds. The energy is weak (max 47 on the 26th). The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, so conditions are choppy and ugly. The 21st of July has a glassy morning, but the swell is only 0.7ft – you’d be bobbing, not surfing. The 26th morning brings the biggest swell of the whole period at 3ft from the ENE, with a 5-second period and moderate cross-onshore wind. Still, it’s poor surf.
The last few days, from the 27th to the 30th of July, are mostly flat again with no swell and occasional light winds. The 27th has a tiny 1ft to 2ft swell with light cross-shore winds, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
So, the bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. La Nartelle is an inconsistent spot, and this is one of those blank runs that happens here. The waves are just too small and the wind is wrong. If you’re desperate, the 26th of July morning has the biggest swell, but it’s poor quality and choppy – honestly, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Keep your eyes on the forecasts, though – it tends not to stay poor for long.
Rusty.
