The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days are looking pretty grim for the region. The first surfable day isn’t until the 20th of July, and even then it’s only a tiny blip. There’s a big gap of nothing before that, and then the whole forecast stays flat and weak. It’s one of those patches where you’re better off keeping the board in the shed and doing something else.
Let’s start with the first real window. On Monday, the 20th of July, a tiny 0.3ft to 1ft swell from the east-northeast turns up, but the wind is cross-onshore and the wave energy is just 4 to 5. That’s barely a bump. The water temp is about average for this time of year. Don’t get excited.
The 21st of July Tuesday afternoon sees a bit more energy – 2ft from the east, period around 4 seconds, and combined energy of 18 – but it’s onshore at 25 km/h, so it’s messy and not worth the paddle.
Then we get a little spike on the 22nd of July Wednesday afternoon: 3ft from the east, 5-second period, and energy hitting 53. Still onshore, though, and the break is La Nartelle, which is a sheltered, beginner-friendly spot that’s inconsistent. For a beginner, it might be a sloppy session, but for anyone else, it’s a pass.
The 24th of July Friday morning actually has clean conditions – light offshore wind from the northwest – with 2ft from the east, 5-second period, and energy of 12. That’s the best of a bad bunch, but it’s tiny and inconsistent. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have it to yourself.
The 30th of July Thursday morning has a clean 2ft from the east, 4-second period, energy of 17, and light offshore wind. The afternoon gets a bit bigger – 4ft from the east, 5-second period, energy of 63 – but winds go cross-shore, so it’s choppy. Still, for an inconsistent spot, that’s about as good as it gets.
Honestly, nothing here is a standout. The swell never gets above 4ft, periods are short, and the energy is weak. The whole 16-day run is a flat spell. When it’s this poor, forecasts can change, but for now, it’s a write-off. I’d keep an eye on the 30th of July for a possible clean-ish morning if you’re desperate.
Rusty.
