The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, and I’ve gotta be straight with you – the next 16 days at La Nartelle are a total write-off for surf. There’s nothing on the table worth paddling out for. The whole stretch from Friday 17 July right through to Saturday 1 August is a flat spell with no real swell to speak of.
The water is sitting at a balmy 81°, which is far warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing going for it. The biggest bump we see is a tiny 3ft ESE swell on Friday afternoon 24 July, with a combined energy of just 35 – that’s weak, mate. And the wind is onshore, chopping it up. Even the glassy mornings, like Saturday 25 July morning with a 1ft SSE swell, deliver nothing but poor surf conditions. The swell direction is E, which is the optimum for this break, but it barely registers.
The problem is La Nartelle is a sheltered beginner spot, and it’s inconsistent at the best of times. This run of blank days is pretty normal for the area. There’s just no energy coming in – the combined swell energy never cracks three digits, mostly sitting at 1, 3, or 5. Even the clean cross-offshore winds on 28 July afternoon with a 3ft E swell only muster 34 energy. It’s surfable in theory, but the guidance says it’s poor, and I’d say it’s more a day for a paddle and a suntan.
If you’re desperate for a wave, the 28 July afternoon might give you a tiny knee-high dribble, but don’t get your hopes up. Honestly, this stretch looks better for kite surfing if the wind picks up, especially on the 30 July with a fresh WNW breeze, but even then, no swell.
Keep an eye on the charts, but for now, save your energy. Nothing’s happening here for the next two weeks.
Rusty.
