G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the outlook for the next couple of weeks is a bit of a dud for paddle surfing. There’s nothing really on offer for a solid stretch, and when we do get a tiny bump, it’s barely enough to bother with.
Right from now, Saturday the 4th of July, it’s all “poor surf conditions” across the board. The swell’s a no-show, with combined energy sitting at 0 (none) and the winds, well, they’re mostly light cross-onshore from the ENE or ESE at 6 or 9 mph. That just gives us small wind ripples or a bit of chop. No size, no shape, no energy.
This flat spell runs through a good number of days. We don’t see a single real wave until Tuesday morning the 7th of July, and even then it’s a desperate little 0.7 ft from the SSE with a period of just 4 seconds. That’s barely a ripple, and the 1 combined energy is a whisper. Conditions are light cross-onshore from the NNE at 3 mph, so glassy it’s not. It’s a scratch.
The whole 16-day forecast is patchy with these tiny bits of energy. Thursday the 9th of July afternoon might see a 1 ft from the ESE at 3 seconds (3 energy), but it’s onshore from the E at 9 mph – messy. Saturday the 11th of July afternoon has a slightly better 2 ft from the E at 4 seconds (7 energy), but again, onshore from the ESE at 6 mph. Not clean, not worth the drive.
The only stretch that looks a bit cleaner is around Monday the 13th and Tuesday the 14th of July, but it’s still tiny. Monday morning is dead flat and glassy, with a text “glassy” condition. Tuesday morning has a 0.7 ft from the E at 4 seconds (1 energy) with a moderate offshore wind from the W at 16 mph. That offshore breeze would be epic if there was any swell. As it is, it’s a clean but empty ocean. Combined energy is negligible.
So, what do we do? Honestly, for a beginner spot like La Nartelle, which is pretty sheltered at the best of times, this is a lean period. It’s not often you see a total blank run like this. With the swell energy never hitting a moderate level, it’s just not happening for us. Forget about standouts – there are none. The sets are non-existent, and the winds, even when offshore, have nothing to work with. If you’re desperate for something wet, maybe the kite surfers will find the occasional 9-12 mph cross-off breeze on the 13th or 18th of July more interesting than paddle surfers will.
Keep the board in the car and keep an eye on the charts, mate. It can’t stay this flat forever.
Rusty.
