The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for our stretch of coast.
Honestly, I’m looking at a long, tough stretch ahead. Right through the end of August and into the first few days of September, there’s just nothing doing. We’ve got a massive dead zone with no swell to speak of. You’re looking at a solid gap of over a week with no worthwhile waves.
The only spot on the cards is La Nartelle, and I’ll be straight with you – it’s not looking good. The water is sitting at a very warm 82°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, over seven degrees above average. That’s pretty unusual, and it adds to the weird, flat feeling right now.
This break is a sheltered, beginner-friendly spot that’s inconsistent. The optimum swell direction here is from the east, but over the whole 16-day window, we barely see a ripple. The few tiny pulses that show up are from the southeast or south, with periods as low as 3 to 6 seconds – that’s short-period, weak energy. The combined swell energy barely gets into double figures, peaking at a weak 35. That’s nothing.
On Thursday afternoon the 20th, you’ve got a tiny 0.3ft swell from the southeast but with a risk of thunderstorms and a cross-off wind at 13 mph – messy. Friday the 21st morning is a bit smaller with rain. After that, it’s just days of offshore winds but with no swell to push. A few times you get clean conditions, like Saturday morning the 22nd with a 16 mph offshore, but with zero wave height, it doesn’t matter.
There is no standout period. There’s no day where it all comes together. For a beginner-friendly spot that needs consistency and a bit of east swell, this is a total bust. For the more experienced, there’s nothing here at all. If the wind picks up enough on those windy offshore days, it might look better for a kite session than a paddle, but even that’s a stretch given the lack of water movement.
So, the honest truth: save your energy. This isn’t the time for a surf. Forecasts can change, and it doesn’t usually stay this quiet forever, but right now, I wouldn’t bother waxing up.
Rusty.
