Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Praia de Garopaba over the next couple of weeks.
First up, it’s looking a bit slow to start. The real action doesn’t kick in until Tuesday morning, July 7th, but when it does, it’s a proper little session. We’ve got a clean, 6ft south swell rolling in with a short 8-second period. The wind is a gentle offshore from the SSW, so the face will be clean. The water temp is about average for this time of year, nothing to write home about but not uncomfortable. The combined energy is moderate (862), so there’s some punch there. For a beginner-friendly spot, this is a solid, fun wave. Just a heads-up, this break can get a bit busy sometimes, so get in early.
Tuesday afternoon the swell drops back to 4ft and the wind swings cross-offshore from the ESE. It’s still clean, but the energy drops right off (340), so it’s more of a cruiser session.
Wednesday morning, July 8th, is a glassy gem. The swell is smaller at 3ft from the S, with a 9-second period, and the wind is totally glassy from the NW. Perfect conditions for a longboard or a mal. Energy is moderate (271). It’s a real treat for a quiet, clean paddle.
Wednesday afternoon the wind turns cross-onshore from the NE, and the surf gets messy. Not worth the paddle.
Thursday, July 9th, the swell shifts to the ESE with a 3ft morning wave, but a light onshore wind from the N and a questionable tide make it a no-go. Afternoon gets choppy with a moderate breeze from the NE.
Friday, July 10th, we get a nice little comeback. Morning shows 3ft from the ESE, period up to 12 seconds, and a clean cross-offshore breeze from the SSW. Energy is moderate (287). Afternoon is even better: 4ft from the ESE, same 12-second period, and a clean offshore wind from the SSE. Energy jumps to 440. That’s the best of the week for consistency and quality. The longer period means better-shaped waves with a bit more push, though at a beach break it might wall up a bit.
Saturday and Sunday, July 11th and 12th, are a mixed bag. Saturday is mostly onshore and cloudy; onshore winds kill it. Sunday brings light rain but a clean cross-offshore SSW breeze in the morning (3ft, 12s, energy 458) and a really clean offshore SSW in the afternoon (3ft, 12s, energy 662). That afternoon session on Sunday, July 12th, is a standout for the week – small but absolutely glassy and with good energy for its size.
Monday, July 13th, is a cracker. Morning has 6ft from the SSE, 10-second period, and a gentle offshore from the SSW. Energy is strong at 748. The waves will have punch, but at 6ft it’s still fine for intermediate surfers. Afternoon the wind picks up to a moderate offshore from the S at 25 km/h, swell stays around 5ft, but conditions get a bit marginal with that stronger breeze.
Tuesday, July 14th, morning is glassy again – 4ft from the SE, 11-second period, and zero wind from the NW. Energy is moderate (432). Beautiful. Afternoon the wind swings cross-onshore and messes things up.
From Wednesday, July 15th, onward, the surf becomes inconsistent and mostly blown out. There are a few windows – Wednesday afternoon has a clean 4ft from the SE with an offshore SSE breeze (energy 249), and Thursday morning, July 16th, is glassy but tiny at 3ft from the ESE (energy 123). After that, from around Friday, July 17th, through to the end of the forecast on Wednesday, July 22nd, it’s a long stretch of onshore wind and poor conditions. The swell tries to pick up again around Saturday, July 18th, with 5ft to 5ft from the E, but the wind is onshore and the waves are a mess. For a spot like this, that kind of blank run is not unusual when the wind sets in.
The best on offer:
- Sunday afternoon, July 12th: Clean, glassy offshore, 3ft, 12-second period, solid energy for the size (662). Perfect conditions for a relaxed, fun session.
- Monday morning, July 13th: 6ft from the SSE with a clean offshore breeze – the biggest and cleanest swell of the week, with strong energy (748). This is the standout for anyone wanting a bit more power.
Stay stoked, and keep an eye on the forecasts – things can turn around quick.
