Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Right, gather 'round. Rusty here, staring down the charts for the next couple weeks, and it's a bit of a mixed bag at Praia de Garopaba. We've got action, but you gotta pick your moments.
First thing you're gonna notice: we're jumping straight into it. No flat spell to start.
Kicking off on Saturday the 4th of July, and it's a proper welcome. The south swell is pumping in with a solid 6ft from the south, a 12-second period, and the energy is cranked (1093). That's a serious amount of water moving. Now, this is an exposed beach, so that south groundswell will be packing some punch. It's a bit hefty for the groms, tipping into experienced territory, but with a clean, cross-off breeze from the SSW, the lines will be holding up nicely. The water temp is about what you'd expect for this time of year, nothing weird going on. It's a solid, charging start.
Then Saturday afternoon, it actually builds a touch more – 8ft from the SSE with even more energy (1401) and a sweet offshore SSE wind. This is prime, heavy, clean surf for those who know what they're doing.
Sunday the 5th sees a drop in quality. The swell hangs around 6-6ft from the SSE, but that clean wind is gone. Onshore NW wind in the morning and a cross-on NE in the arvo makes for a mess. Not worth the paddle.
Monday the 6th is a write-off. Small, onshore winds, poor conditions. A day for the workshop, not the water.
Tuesday the 7th, the wind swings back around, and we get a clean, offshore SSW breeze all morning. Swell is 6ft from the south, but the period has dropped right off to just 7 seconds. It's gonna be a bit weak and walled-up, so temper your expectations even though it's clean. The energy reading (689) confirms it's moderate, not the beast from the weekend.
Wednesday through Friday of that first week are a frustrating slide into small, weak surf with onshore winds for the most part. A few clean moments, but the swell is tiny. There's a flash of hope late Friday afternoon the 10th – a fresh offshore SSW wind at 19 mph on a tiny 3ft ESE swell, but that's more of a blown-out novelty.
Now, Saturday the 11th of July. This is a standout if you're patient. The morning offers 4ft from the ESE, but the period stretches out to 13 seconds – a proper long-period groundswell. The energy is solid (654), and with a light cross-off wind, it should be clean. This sort of long period on an exposed beach can break a bit straight, so find your peak. Sunday the 12th is one to skip – onshore winds and rain.
Then we hit a bit of a lull from early next week. Monday 13th has a tiny clean pulse early, but we're talking knee-waist high at best. The real next highlight is Tuesday afternoon the 14th – glassy conditions with a light 4ft S swell. It'll be small but silky.
Wednesday the 15th is a similar story: glassy, clean, but small. Good for a log if you're desperate.
Now, the real stand-out for the second week is kicking in on Thursday the 16th of July. The swell starts to kick again, with 7ft from the south in the morning under a clean cross-off, but it's Thursday afternoon that's looking choice: a clean 8ft from the south with moderate offshore wind and a healthy energy reading (1134). Excellent, heavy waves for the crew with some experience.
Friday the 17th of July is a massive pulse, but it comes with a caveat. We're talking 8ft from the SSE with a very long 15-second period and a whopping energy reading of 3121. That's a lot of water and power. The wind is cross-off in the morning and offshore in the arvo. For the experts, the offshore arvo session will be epic. For anyone else, it's a paddle-out and a beating. That long period will make it a bit tricky on the beach, but the power is undeniable.
The weekend wraps it up with a cleaner but dropping swell on Saturday the 18th – 5ft from the SSE in the morning, still got some energy (787) and a cross-off wind. A good, solid end to the run before it fades into small stuff by Sunday the 19th.
So, the magic windows: Saturday 4th for a powerful, clean south swell, though it's a bit big. Saturday 11th for a clean, long-period ESE groundswell. And for the heavy crew, Thursday 16th afternoon and especially Friday 17th afternoon are the ones to circle on the calendar – just make sure you've got the skills to pay the bills.
Stay frothy.
