The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, but in feet and miles per hour for you lot.
Right now, it’s a slow cooker start for Praia de Garopaba. The first week’s mostly a write-off, but we’ve got a proper pulse kicking in around the end of July and the first weekend of August. That’s your real standout.
On the *19th of July*, it’s ugly. NE wind blowing 12 mph straight onshore, waves around 6 feet but it’s junk. The energy’s moderate (721), but don’t bother. Monday the 20th is a bit cleaner with a light cross-onshore breeze, but the 6 ft swell is short-period and messy. Marginal at best.
Tuesday the 21st is the first clean day. Wind shifts light from the south, proper offshore in the morning, and by the afternoon it’s dead glassy. Swell drops to 4-4 ft from the ENE. It’s short-period (8 seconds), energy is weak (298-254). Good for a beginner on a foamie, and you might find a few fun ones. Crowds can show up here sometimes.
Wednesday the 22nd afternoon cleans up with a gentle offshore from the south, but the waves are tiny – just 3 ft.
Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th are the cleanest of the first week. Light offshore/cross-offshore wind from the southwest, waves building to 5-5 ft from the SSE and SE. Energy is moderate (around 400). It’s clean, but still short-period. Not a classic, but rideable.
Then a lull from Saturday the 25th to Wednesday the 30th. There’s some glassy moments on Sunday the 26th and Monday the 27th, but the swell is tiny – 2 to 3 ft. Weak energy.
Now, here’s the good stuff. Thursday the 30th of July morning – glassy calm, a solid 7 ft swell from the south, period 8 seconds. Energy is 652 (moderate). The wind is flat calm. That’s a proper session. Get it early before the afternoon breeze messes it up.
But the real standouts are Saturday the 1st and Sunday the 2nd of August. Saturday morning: glassy, 6 ft swell from the SSE, but now the period is a deep 15 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. The combined energy is 1405 (strong). This is excellent for experienced surfers. The swell direction matches the break’s optimum exposure. Just a heads-up – with a 15-second period, it can be a bit sectiony at a beach break, so look for the best bank. Sunday morning is almost identical: glassy again, 6 ft, 15-second period, energy at 1420. The afternoons on both days get choppy with a moderate cross-onshore, so you gotta be an early bird.
The water temperature is about average for this time of year, nothing weird.
So, first week and a half is pretty flat. But don’t pack it in. The 30th of July and the 1st and 2nd of August are the windows you want.
Rusty.
