Table - best surf conditions forecast for Praia de Garopaba over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. We’ve got a bit of a mixed bag coming up for Praia de Garopaba. The first few days have some clean waves, but it’s not all smooth sailing. The standout sessions are definitely on the 22nd and the 27th, so keep your eyes on those.
The water’s sitting at 59°, which is a whopping 7° colder than usual for this time of year – that’s very unusual, so you’ll want a thick wetsuit.
The run starts on Monday, July 13th, with solid but messy surf. The morning brings a 7ft swell from the south, period 8 seconds, with a cross-offshore wind. The wave energy is strong (1008), but it’s a short-period swell, more suited to experienced surfers. The afternoon cleans up with a proper offshore wind, dropping to 6ft, but the energy drops to 677. It’s surfable, but not the best of the week.
Tuesday, July 14th, is a real treat. The morning is glassy with a 6ft swell from the southeast, period 10 seconds – that’s a longer period, giving you better-shaped waves. The energy is moderate (546), and the conditions are clean. That’s a solid session for a Tuesday. The afternoon gets choppy as the wind swings cross-onshore, so get in early.
From Wednesday, July 15th, through to Sunday, July 19th, it’s a write-off. Onshore winds, lumpy, choppy, and poor surf. Don’t bother paddling out. The swell sticks around, but the wind kills it.
Monday, July 20th, and Tuesday, July 21st, offer a small reprieve. Clean, offshore winds on the 20th morning with 4ft from the east-northeast, but the energy is weak (238). The 21st has a similar morning, with 4ft from the same direction, but the afternoon is the real gem – a 3ft groundswell from the south-southeast, period 12 seconds, with clean winds. The energy is moderate (426), and it’s a classic, longer period swell that’ll peel nicely.
Now, the best of the best. Wednesday, July 22nd, is the standout. The morning is already good with 5ft from the south-southeast, period 10 seconds, and clean cross-offshore winds. The energy is strong (795). But the afternoon is where it’s at: 5ft from the same direction, period 10 seconds, and light, clean winds. The energy jumps to 1041 (moderate to strong), and it’s described as excellent surf for experienced surfers. This is your day. The break is fairly consistent, but crowds can happen sometimes.
Thursday, July 23rd, is a mixed bag. The morning is poor, but the afternoon goes glassy with a 3ft, 12-second groundswell from the southeast. It’s small, but clean.
Friday, July 24th, is another good one. The afternoon has a 4ft swell from the south-southeast, period 12 seconds, with a moderate offshore wind. The energy is 552 (moderate), and it’s clean.
Saturday and Sunday, July 26th, have some big, raw energy. The swell jumps to 7ft and 8ft from the south-southeast, with a very long period of 15 seconds on the 26th. The energy is massive (2224 and 2437), but the wind is cross-onshore, making it choppy and marginal. This is for experts only, and the long period means it might break a bit straight on the beach. It’s more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer.
Finally, Monday, July 27th, is the other standout. The morning is still a bit messy with a 6ft, 14-second groundswell, but the afternoon is magic. The wind swings cross-offshore, and the swell is 7ft from the south-southeast, period 14 seconds. The energy is 1659 (strong), and it’s described as excellent for experienced surfers. This is a big, clean, powerful groundswell. If you’re an expert, don’t miss it.
Tuesday, July 28th, fades out with a 5ft swell from the south-southeast, period 14 seconds, but the wind is onshore in the morning and cross-shore in the afternoon, making it a bit choppy.
So, to sum it up: the 22nd and the 27th are your best bets. The 22nd is the cleaner, smaller standout, while the 27th afternoon is the big-wave option. Everything else is either too windy or too small. Get out there.
Rusty.
