Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, this is Rusty. Let me tell you straight up: this 16-day window is a tough one for North Street (beach/jetty). The forecast is mostly a flat, frustrating run of small, weak, and messy surf. You’re looking at very few windows where it’s even worth paddling out.
We start off with a real dud. Saturday, July 4th through to the morning of Sunday, July 5th, we’ve got tiny 1ft swell from the SE with a short period of 9 seconds. The energy is weak (18), and the wind is cross-shore. It’s just poor surf conditions. Sunday afternoon and Monday get even worse with onshore wind and dropping periods.
Basically, for the first full week and a half, from now until around Monday, July 13th, the surf is consistently offering weak, small swell. The swell heights stay mostly between 1ft and 3ft, and the period rarely gets above 8 seconds, meaning the waves lack any punch. The wind is almost always cross, cross-on, or onshore, giving you a rough, choppy surface. There are a couple of brief clean windows, like Tuesday morning, July 7th, with a light cross-offshore wind, but the swell is only 2ft and from the east—not much to ride.
The one small standout, if you can call it that, happens on the morning of Tuesday, July 14th. The swell bumps up just a touch to 3ft from the ESE, with a period of 8 seconds. The energy is 110, so it’s finally moderate, but more importantly, the wind goes glassy. The water temperature is running at 74°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year—that’s much warmer than usual. This is the only time in the whole run the notes say “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s not going to be epic, but it’s your best chance for a clean, small-wave session.
After that, it’s back to the same story. We get a glimpse of something a little bigger around July 17th and 18th, with 3ft to 4ft swell from the S and SSE. The period gets up to 8 seconds, and there’s some clean morning wind on July 18th, but the energy is still only moderate (130). It’s still a long way from pumping. This long-range stuff is promising but less certain.
Honest truth, Rusty’s take: most of this fortnight isn’t worth the wettie. The only day that has a shot at being a little fun for a longboard on the glass is July 14th. Everything else is a write-off for paddle surfing.
Rusty.
