The Lowdown
Howdy, Rusty here.
Alright boys and girls, let's call a spade a spade. The next couple of weeks at North Street are looking pretty grim. We're in for a real dry spell, over a week of tiny, choppy, unrideable junk. The water's 25° – a touch warmer than usual for this time of year – but that's not gonna make up for the lack of waves.
The first bit of hope comes on Saturday, August 29th. We'll see a little 2ft swell from the SE with a 9-second period. Energy is a weak 73, but early in the morning the wind goes WNW offshore, which will clean things right up. It'll be small and ordinary, but if you're on a log it might just be worth stretching the arms for.
That little window holds into Sunday the 30th of August. You'll see the same 2ft of swell, and the wind goes glassy early with a light ESE breeze. Energy is still weak at 55, but the clean surface and sunny morning could give you a few grovelly rides if you're not too fussy. That's the best we've got across the whole 16 days.
Beyond that, the swell tries to pick up a bit on Monday the 31st of August, with 3ft from the ESE and combined energy hitting 201 (moderate). But the wind cranks out of the S at 25 km/h, cross-onshore, making it a chop bowl. Not worth it. The second week of September offers a few clean moments here and there – like Tuesday the 1st and Wednesday the 2nd – but the swell is too small and the wind will mess it up again.
Bottom line: the weekend of August 29th and 30th is your only real chance. Don't expect much. Longboard, patience, and maybe a thermos. The forecasts can always change, but right now this stretch looks like a proper dud.
