The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’ve got the lowdown on what’s in store for us over the next couple of weeks. Let’s get into it.
Right off the bat, I’ll be honest with you – the outlook for North Street is a pretty quiet one. We’re looking at a long stretch of small, weak, and mostly messy conditions. There’s no real standout session in the first week, and the wait for anything decent is going to be a test of patience.
The first day that shows any flicker of life is Saturday the 18th of July. The morning is a write-off, but Saturday afternoon brings a glassy, flat-ish 1 ft swell from the South. The period is a tiny 5 seconds, so it’s just a sloppy little windswell, but the glassy conditions will make it surfable. It’s a very small window, not a classic by any stretch.
Sunday the 19th of July morning is actually the pick of the first week. We’ve got a clean 2 ft swell from the SSE with a light offshore wind from the NW. It’s small, but it will be clean and fun on a longboard. The combined energy is weak at 61, so don’t expect any power.
The real story here is the gap. After that Sunday, we’re looking at days of onshore junk, cross-shore chop, and tiny surf. The conditions are poor for surfing, and the swell is just not there. It’s not until Wednesday the 22nd of July that the energy jumps up a bit, with a 5 ft SSE swell pushing the combined energy to 337 (moderate energy). But the wind is a fresh cross-shore 19 mph from the SW, making it lumpy and choppy – honestly, this setup looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. It’s a messy, blown-out day.
The second week continues in the same vein. There are a few mornings with light offshore winds, like Thursday the 23rd of July and Saturday the 25th of July, but the swell is tiny (2 ft to 2 ft) and weak. The only real highlight is way out on Saturday the 26th of July morning, with a glassy 1 ft ESE swell, but it’s barely a ripple.
The best bet, if you’re desperate, is the morning of Wednesday the 29th of July. The swell is 2 ft from the SSE with a period of 8 seconds, and the combined energy is 106 (moderate). The wind is cross-shore from the SW, so it won’t be perfect, but it’s the most energy we’ve seen in a while. It’s not a stand-out, just the least bad option.
To be honest, there’s no real standout session in this 16-day forecast. The water temperature is a notable 77°, which is 4° warmer than normal for this time of year—a pleasant surprise for a mid-winter session. But the swell just isn’t cooperating. For a spot that’s fairly consistent, this is a disappointing run. Keep the board waxed and hope the next forecast brings better news.
Rusty.
