The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this 16-day window for North Street is looking pretty lean. I’ve combed through the numbers, and honestly, there’s no session in this whole stretch that I’d call a standout. The surf is small, the energy is weak, and the wind is rarely on our side. If you’ve got the itch, you might find a quiet moment, but don’t expect any fireworks.
We start off the first few days, from Tuesday the 14th through to Saturday the 18th, with tiny, weak surf. The swell is barely cracking 1ft, with periods mostly short around 5 to 9 seconds, and the combined energy is pathetic – barely scratching 29 at best. The wind is a mess of cross and cross-off breezes, with some clean-ish moments but nothing that makes the ankle-biters worth paddling out for. Saturday morning the 18th does go glassy for a bit, with a 0.3ft SE swell, but that’s a lake, not a surf.
Sunday the 19th sees a little lift. The morning brings a 4ft S swell with a 6-second period, and the combined energy bumps up to a moderate 109. The wind is a clean cross-off from the west, so the surface will be smooth. Still, the waves are just “surfable but very ordinary” – it’s not going to blow your mind, but if you’re desperate, it’s the best we’ve seen. The afternoon drops off a bit.
Monday the 20th morning is similar, with a 3ft SSE swell and a 9-second period, energy at 108. Light wind from the north keeps it clean. Again, it’s small but tidy. If you’re a beginner, these knee-high waves are fine for learning, but don’t expect power.
The rest of the week into the 23rd stays small and mostly choppy. But then Thursday the 23rd throws a curveball. The swell jumps to 6ft from the east, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy rockets up to 320 in the morning and 402 in the afternoon – that’s a lot of water moving around. But here’s the catch: the wind is a fresh cross-shore from the SSW, turning cross-onshore. The report says “fresh cross-onshore and lumpy” and “poor surf conditions.” This is a classic case of a blown-out, messy closeout. At that size with that wind, a beach/jetty setup like North Street is going to be a washing machine. Honestly, this looks more interesting for the kite surfers than paddle surfers.
The final week from the 24th to the 29th settles back into mediocrity. Swells hover around 2ft to 5ft, but the wind is consistently cross or cross-onshore, keeping the surface lumpy and choppy. The energy stays moderate, but the quality never comes together. The last day, Wednesday the 29th, has a 3ft S swell with a 19 mph cross-shore wind – again, lumpy and uninviting.
So, what’s the call? The best of a bad bunch is North Street on the morning of Sunday the 19th and the morning of Monday the 20th. It’s clean, small, and weak – perfect for a longboarder who just wants to be out there, but there’s nothing to get excited about. The rest of the 16 days is a write-off for quality surf. Stay patient.
Rusty.
