The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window for North Street is a tough one. The forecast is pretty grim for the foreseeable future. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf conditions that just keeps on rolling. From Friday the 21st of August right through to the end of August, it’s a whole lot of nothing. The combined swell energy is weak, barely cracking 30-40 (33) on most days, with tiny waves and average wind. There’s a few mornings with clean conditions, like Sunday the 23rd with a light offshore, but the swell is just too small at 0.7ft to make it worth the paddle out from the NE direction.
The water temperature is way warmer than usual for this time of year, about 78°, with a big anomaly of 5°F warmer than normal. That’s unusual, but it doesn’t help the waves.
We finally see a tiny flicker of life on Tuesday the 1st of September. The morning session starts glassy with a 3ft SSE swell, but it’s a short period 6s deal. The combined energy is still low (57). The afternoon picks up a little with a 4ft SSE swell, still short period, and the energy climbs to 135 – that’s moderate energy now. The wind stays light and cross-off from the NNE, so you might get a few clean, ridable waves. It’s not a standout, but it’s the best on offer by a long shot. The swell direction is SE, which is where this beach/jetty likes it, but the period is short, so it won’t have much punch.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums. Wednesday the 2nd is glassy again but with a tiny 2ft S swell, and then from Thursday the 3rd through to the end of the period on Saturday the 5th of September, it’s all cross-onshore winds and knee-high junk. The combined energy drops back to 15-16 – that’s basically flat.
So, the honest truth is there’s no real standout session here. The only day worth a glance is Tuesday the 1st of September, but keep your expectations on the floor. It’s a blank run, and for this area, that’s pretty normal when the long-range forecast goes quiet.
Rusty.
