The Lowdown
Alright, this is Rusty, and I’m looking at what the next couple of weeks have in store for us at North Street. Let’s be straight up: it’s a quiet run, with the ocean taking a long nap for the most part. For the first week and a half, there’s nothing worth paddling out for. We’re looking at a solid gap from now until around the 21st of July where the surf is just too small or messy to bother with. The water temp is sitting at a balmy 76°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you’ll be comfortable in a spring suit, but there’s just no push.
The first real blip of hope shows up on the afternoon of Sunday the 21st of July. We’ve got a 6ft swell out of the south, with a period of 7 seconds. The energy is moderate at 278 (moderate wave energy). The wind is cross-offshore from the west-southwest, so it’ll be clean. This is the best we’ll see, but it’s still only marginal. The size is getting up there, so it’s not for beginners, and the period is short, so the waves will be a bit lumpy and close together. Still, if you’re desperate, that’s your window.
After that, we get a bit of a tease on the 22nd of July, Wednesday morning. The wind is offshore from the northwest, which is a big plus, keeping the surface clean. The swell drops to 3ft from the south-southeast, with a period of 9 seconds, and the energy is weak at 111 (moderate wave energy). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. Just tiny, clean lines for the longboard if you’re really keen.
Then it’s back to flat and poor conditions through the rest of the month. The 28th of July, Tuesday morning, shows a little 2ft swell from the east-southeast, with a light cross-off breeze, but the energy is low (74) and it’s still just “surfable but very ordinary.” Nothing to get excited about.
So, the standout window is really the afternoon of the 21st and the morning of the 22nd. The 21st has the most size, the 22nd has the best wind. If you’re looking for a wave, those are the only two sessions that even come close. The rest of the time, save your petrol and wait for the next system.
Rusty.
