The Lowdown

Alright, let me be straight with you. It’s a grim run of small, messy, or blown-out conditions for the whole 16-day stretch. There’s no real standout session, just a couple of moments that might get you a few grovelly ones if you’re desperate. I can only really give you a nod for a brief window and one morning of glass.

For most of the period, we’re stuck with tiny, weak swells. The energy barely registers. Friday the 17th into the weekend, we’re looking at ankle-to-knee high lines from the south with periods around 5 seconds; that’s just wind chop, not surf. Saturday the 18th sees a jump in the wind, with a moderate breeze onshore making a mess of any small bump.

The first chance of anything rideable sneaks in on North Street Sunday the 19th. We get a gentle offshore from the NNW and the swell shows a pulse from the SSE at 3ft with a period of 7 seconds. It’s still nothing special – combined wave energy is only 94 – but it’s clean. The same continues into Sunday afternoon with 2ft from the south. It’s surfable, but very ordinary.

Then it’s back to tiny, choppy junk until Wednesday the 22nd. Wednesday morning, the swell jumps to 7ft from the south (8-second period) and the combined energy hits 662, but the wind is a fresh cross-offshore from the SW. It’s too big for beginners. Wednesday afternoon cleans up with a moderate offshore from the WNW, dropping to 4ft and 190 energy. That’s the biggest, cleanest window of the whole outlook – a serious option for experienced surfers only.

From there, it’s a slow fade back into small, onshore drivel. The only other flicker of hope is Saturday the 25th morning. The ESE wind goes glassy, and we get 4ft from the east with a short 6-second period and 130 energy. It’s small and weak, but glassy. That’s your consolation prize for the second week.

Water temp is about average for the time of year, so no wetsuit surprises.

Bottom line: if you’re a competent surfer, make the most of Wednesday the 22nd afternoon and maybe that glassy Saturday morning. Otherwise, don’t bother. For everyone else, it’s kitesurfing weather on the windy days.

Rusty.
