Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mewslade Bay over the next 16 days.
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on for Mewslade Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim outlook for most of the period. The first week and a half is basically a write-off. We’re looking at tiny, weak waves, with combined swell energy barely cracking 30 (20–30 range) for days on end. That’s just not enough to push a decent ride. The water is a balmy 68°F, which is a solid 9°F warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s very unusual, and honestly, almost feels like a tropical anomaly. But with the swell being so flat, it’s more of a swimming day than a surfing one.
We’ve got a few days of glassy conditions on Friday morning, July 17, and again on Tuesday morning, July 21, but with swell heights of just 1.0ft to 1ft and periods of 6 seconds, it’s barely a ripple. The wind is light or calm, which would be perfect if there was any wave to surf. There’s a long gap of very poor surf quality from now through to about July 23.
Now, things do perk up a little around July 24. On Friday morning, July 24, we start to see some life: a 3ft swell from the west with a period of 6 seconds, and fresh cross-offshore winds from the northwest. The combined energy jumps to 82 – still weak, but it’s movement. The real uptick comes on Saturday afternoon, July 25, and into Sunday, July 26. On Sunday morning, July 26, we’ve got a 7ft swell from the west-southwest, period of 8 seconds, and combined energy of 488 (moderate). That’s the biggest swell of the window. But – and it’s a big but – the wind is fresh cross-onshore from the west-southwest, making it lumpy and choppy. The water will be messy, not clean. For experienced surfers, there might be some punchy, albeit messy, waves. For beginners, 7ft is too big, and with the chop, it’s not a good call. The swell direction is west-southwest, which matches the optimum direction of southwest for Mewslade Bay, so it’s hitting the bay well, but the wind is the spoiler.
The standout, if you can call it that, is probably the Sunday morning, July 26, session for the size, but it’s a battle. The best quality on offer might actually be the Friday morning, July 24, with cleaner cross-offshore wind and a more manageable 3ft, though the energy is still low. For a true clean, glassy window with any size, we’re just not getting it.
Overall, this is a lean run. Mewslade Bay is an exposed spot, but it’s going to need a better alignment of swell and wind to fire. The forecast is more reliable in the near term, and the long-range standouts are promising but uncertain. For now, it’s a case of watching and waiting for the next proper swell.
