Table - best surf conditions forecast for Mewslade Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's get into it. We're looking at the Gower, specifically Mewslade Bay, for the next couple of weeks. Honest to God, it's a tough start. We’ve got a massive hole of flat, clean nothing to start.
First up, there's no surf worth talking about until the 21st of July. That’s a solid ten days of waiting. It'll be small, clean, and frustrating. You’ll be tempted, but the waves just won’t be there. Even when the wind is glassy on Friday the 17th, with a light breeze from the WNW, there's barely a ripple.
On Tuesday the 21st of July, the ocean finally wakes up. A lumpy, cross-onshore swell pushes in from the WSW at 4ft high, but it’s short-period junk at 6 seconds. The energy is moderate (123) but the wind is howling from the SW at 25 mph. It's messy. Honestly, it looks way more like a kite session than a paddle-out.
That trend continues through Wednesday and Thursday the 22nd and 23rd of July. We've got consistent waist-high swell, around 4ft to 4ft, all from the WSW, but the wind never really gets right. It's cross-shore or cross-onshore and choppy. Wave energy is moderate to strong (up to 186), but without clean conditions, it’s a battle.
Now, there’s a blip on the 24th of July. By Friday afternoon, the wind finally turns cross-off from the N, and the swell bumps up to 5ft from the SW (185 combined energy). The period is a weak 6 seconds though, so it’ll be a bit fat and sectiony, but at least it’s clean. This is the first real chance for a surf, but it's not a standout. It'll be a bit of a battle.
The real event, the one to circle on your calendar, lands on the 25th of July. That Saturday, a solid groundswell push arrives from the W at 8ft high. The combined energy is massive (1031), so there’s proper power. But there’s the catch: it’s cross-onshore from the W at 16 mph, which means it’s going to be choppy. At that size, 8ft, this is experts-only territory. It's gonna be a big, messy, powerful beast. Beginners, stay on the beach.
The last few days into Sunday the 26th of July, it drops off fast. Rain showers and onshore wind kill the vibe.
So, who gets the nod? Mewslade Bay. It’s the only game in town. For a real standout, that Saturday the 25th of July has the most size and power. The water temperature is a staggering 67°F, which is an anomaly of 8°F—much warmer than normal for this time of year. You won't need a thick suit, that’s for sure.
But here's the thing: because of the onshore wind and big swell, the actual quality will be poor. It's a raw, challenging session for skilled locals only. The crowds on Mewslade can be *sometimes* an issue, but in those conditions, most will be staying dry. Honestly, for a clean wave, the whole window is a write-off. We just have to take what we get.
Rusty, signing off.
