The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks at Mewslade Bay.
To be straight with you, this is a tough stretch. The whole 16-day window is a real grind with no standout days where everything clicks. The swell is small and weak, and when it does pick up a bit, the wind is just never kind. We’re looking at a long, flat spell right through to the start of next week, with the energy barely registering above 100 (max 58 in the first few days).
The first real sign of life doesn’t show until Thursday, August 27th. That morning there’s some 6 ft swell from the WSW, period around 7 seconds, and the wind looks clean with a cross-off breeze. Wave energy bumps up to 248 – moderate – and conditions are described as clean. This is about as good as it gets. A few hours of ok surf for intermediates, but the afternoon gets chopped up again.
Crowds are *sometimes* an issue here, but on a run like this you might have a bit more room.
After that, the wind turns ugly again. Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th are blown out or messy. Sunday the 30th sees another pulse of 6 ft swell from the southwest, but with a cross-shore wind at 28 mph, it’ll be pure chaos. If you’re into kite surfing, that Sunday might be more interesting than paddling.
We end the period on Monday, August 31st with more of the same: moderate, cross-onshore mess and a slope in size. Nothing for the log, nothing for the step-up.
Water temp is running at 69°F, which is a whopping 8° warmer than usual – way above normal for the time of year – so you won’t need the thick suit, just a whole lot of patience.
To be honest, if you’re desperate, the Thursday morning session on the 27th is your best bet. Set your alarm, but don’t get your hopes too high. Forecasts can change, but this one’s a tough read.
Rusty.
