The Lowdown
Alright, folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming down the line for Mewslade Bay.
To be honest, it’s a pretty slow start. We’re looking at a long dry spell right through the first week, with nothing worth paddling out for. The combined swell energy is barely registering, mostly single-digit values, and the wave heights are tiny – we’re talking 0.3ft to 0.7ft. It’s going to be a frustrating wait. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so at least it won’t be a shock when you do get in.
The first real sign of life doesn’t show up until Sunday, July 26th. The swell starts to build, but it’s messy. The wind is cross-shore with a cross-chop, and the period is a short, weak 6 seconds. It’s not really surfable. By Tuesday, July 28th, things get a little more interesting. The morning shows a clean, cross-offshore breeze and a 2ft swell from the W with a 9-second period. The combined energy is 79 (moderate) – still not a standout, but it’s the first time we see a "surfable" comment. The waves will be ordinary, but for a desperate surfer, it’s something to wet the line.
The real standout, the only one I’d call a highlight, is that brief window on Thursday, July 23rd. The swell is only 0.3ft, but the stars align for a moment. The wind is glassy, and the period is a long 15 seconds from the SW. The combined energy is 18 (weak), but for a south-west facing spot like Mewslade Bay, that long period groundswell, even tiny, will wrap in beautifully. The water will be like a mirror. It’s a rare, subtle moment of perfection for the patient soul.
After that, the second week is a bit of a washout again. The swell picks up a touch on the 26th and 27th, hitting 4ft on the 26th afternoon with a 6-second period, but the wind is a cross-shore mess. It’s not going to be pretty. The strongest energy we see in the entire run is 113 (moderate) on that Sunday afternoon, but the poor conditions kill it. There’s a chance of a clean morning on the 28th, but it’s gone by the afternoon.
So, bottom line: get out there on the morning of Thursday, July 23rd if you own a log and have a good eye for a tiny wall. Tuesday, July 28th morning is the next best bet for a bit of size, but it’s not going to be special. The rest? A waiting game.
Rusty.
