The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer here at Mewslade Bay. I’m not gonna lie to you, it’s a tough watch. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat, with only a tiny flicker of hope right at the end of the first week. We’ve got a long dry spell to get through first.
The water’s sitting at a balmy 68°, which is a massive 8° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s seriously unusual, almost like bathwater, but don’t get your hopes up for the waves to match.
For the first week, from Saturday the 18th right through to Friday the 24th of July, it’s a complete write-off. Swell heights are barely a whisper, mostly less than 1ft. The wave energy is pitiful, with the combined energy reading just single or low double digits. You’re looking at a lot of glassy mornings, like Monday the 20th and Thursday the 23rd, which would be perfect if there was anything to ride, but there isn’t. The wind shifts around, but honestly, it doesn’t matter when there’s no swell.
Now, there is a glimmer. On Saturday morning, the 25th of July, we finally see a pulse of energy. The swell pushes up to about 5ft from the west, with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy jumps to 205 (moderate), which is the only real number we’ve seen. The wind is a clean cross-off from the NNW, so the surface should be tidy. This is your one and only standout window. It’s not a massive swell, but it’s the only game in town. That 5ft is right on the edge of being too much for beginners, but it’s manageable.
After that, it drops off again. The rest of the 25th and into the following week, the swell fades back to nothing. There are a few more clean, cross-off mornings, like the 30th and 31st of July, but with the swell barely a ripple, it’s just a nice day to be on the beach, not in the water. For the first week of August, it’s the same story – tiny, powerless waves. It’s a long, dry stretch.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, you’ve got one shot on Saturday the 25th of July. It’s not going to be epic, but it’s the only thing that’s even close. For the rest of the 16 days, it’s a flat spell. Don’t bother packing the boards until that Saturday morning.
