The Lowdown

Gutted is the word, folks. Looking at the whole sixteen-day window for Mewslade Bay, it’s a proper heartbreaker. There’s a big fat zero on the scoreboard for the vast majority of this run. The opening days are tiny, weak, and messy, and while we do see a pulse of energy pushing through around the 30th of August and the 1st of September, the wind and conditions are just absolute garbage, turning any potential into slop. It’s a long dry spell, so if you’re itching for a wave, you might be waiting a while.

The first week is basically a write-off. From Friday the 21st through to the 29th, we're looking at dribbly little lines of 0.3ft to 2ft. The energy is pathetic, with the combined swell energy struggling to get past double digits, and for a lot of that time it’s not even reaching 50 (73 at best early on, but dropping to 11-16). The swell is mostly from the WSW, right in the pocket for the bay, but there’s just nothing behind it. To make matters worse, the winds are mostly cross or cross-off, so it’s just a mess of tiny, blown-out bumps. There’s a glassy moment on the morning of Saturday the 22nd, but with a wave of just 1ft at 10 seconds, it’s barely a ripple. The water temp is a balmy 69°, which is 8° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a seriously weird anomaly, and it makes you wonder what’s going on out there, but it doesn’t help the waves. We finally see some pulse in the energy on the 29th (286), but it’s still only 4ft and the cross-shore wind is on it, so it’s not worth a paddle.

Now, the end of the month and into September brings the swell, but with a brutal side-order of onshore junk. On the morning of Sunday the 30th of August, the swell bumps to 5ft with a moderate energy of 538, but it’s straight onshore from the SSW, making it a lumpy, closed-out mess. The morning of the 31st sees the biggest wave of the period at 6ft, and the energy jumps to 782, but again, it’s cross-onshore and choppy. This is the only time it gets near what you’d call a proper size, and even then, 6ft at Mewslade with the wind on it is just a washing machine. The 1st of September morning is a similar story, with 6ft and a risk of thunderstorms, but the onshore wind is lighter, so there might be a window of semi-rideable, lumpy waves, though it's still only marginal at best. This whole stretch is more about the raw power than any kind of quality, and honestly, it looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a surfer.

After that little pulse, it just fades away again. By the 2nd and 3rd, we’re back to 2ft and smaller, with moderate energy values in the low tens and fifties. There’s a glassy, clear morning on the 3rd of September, but it’s with a wave of just 1ft, so you’d need a longboard and a prayer. The 4th brings a brief uptick to 3ft with onshore winds again, and then it’s right back down into the doldrums for the 5th. Honestly, the only highlight is that one window from the 30th to the 1st where there’s a bit of size, but the conditions are so poor that it’s not a recommendation. It’s just a cruel tease. Keep the board in the car, but don’t get your hopes up.
