The Lowdown

Right then, let’s talk about Mewslade Bay. To be honest, it’s a pretty grim outlook for the next 16 days. The water is sitting at 68°F which is a massive 7°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual and honestly feels a bit weird for the season.

We start off with a long stretch of nothing. From Sunday the 23rd right through to Thursday the 27th, the wave energy is just pathetic, with combined swell readings barely cracking 33 (weak energy). The swell is tiny, mostly 0.3ft to 1.0ft from the SW or W, and even though there are moments of glassy conditions, like Wednesday afternoon when the wind dies completely, there’s just no swell to work with. It’s clean but flat.

Thursday the 27th morning sees a bit of a pulse, with swell hitting 4ft from the SW and the combined energy jumping to 216 (moderate). But the problem is an onshore wind from the SSW blowing at 12 mph, so it’s going to be messy. The period is only 8 seconds, so it’s a weak, short-period windswell. Not the kind of thing that gets you out of bed.

Friday the 28th morning is the first time we get a “surfable” call. The swell drops to 2ft from the SW, but it’s clean with a light cross-offshore breeze. The energy is 71 (weak) and the period is 7 seconds, so it’s small and a bit weak, but if you’re desperate, you could get a few grovelly ones. It’s the best the whole week has to offer, but that’s not saying much.

The weekend into the next week is a write-off. Saturday the 29th brings onshore wind and rain, with swell hitting 5ft from the WSW, but the wind is 19 mph onshore. The energy is 256 (moderate), but it’s blown out. Sunday the 31st is still messy with cross-shore winds.

We then get a massive gap of nothing from the 1st of September right through to the 3rd of September. The energies are in the single digits and teens, with tiny swell. It’s completely flat.

The first real standout in the whole window comes on Friday the 5th of September. The swell builds to 8ft from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy is a massive 1067 (strong to very strong wave energy). This is a serious swell. However, there’s a catch – the wind is a gentle cross-onshore at 9 mph, so it’ll be a bit choppy and bumpy. The swell is also over 8ft, which is expert territory. This is a big, powerful, and fairly lumpy setup. It’s the best we’ve got, but it’s not ideal. The Saturday afternoon that follows it gets even bigger, with 7ft and 592 energy, but the onshore wind is 22 mph, so it’s a total mess.

The final day, Monday the 8th of September, is the biggest of the lot. Swell hits 12ft from the WSW with a 10-second period and an energy reading of 2494 (very strong wave energy). But the wind is a near-gale from the W at 31 mph, with a cross-shore direction. This is a massive, angry, and dangerous ocean. For a beach break like Mewslade Bay, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s huge, dangerous, and completely blown out.

So, the only real standout is Friday the 5th of September morning. It’s a big swell, but the wind is a letdown. It’s a heavy, expert-only wave. The rest of the 16 days is a barren run of tiny, blown-out, or flat conditions. This is a tough one.

Rusty.
