The Lowdown
Alright, hey. Rusty here, looking at the local surf picture for the next couple of weeks.
First off, I gotta be straight with you – it’s a pretty grim outlook for a while. The water is way warmer than usual for this time of year, coming in at a balmy 69°, which is a solid 7° above the norm. That’s a real standout, but unfortunately, the waves aren't backing it up. We're looking at a long stretch of small, weak, and mostly messy conditions. The combined swell energy is weak, with values mostly in the double digits.
For the first week and a half, from Thursday the 20th of August right through to the end of the month, it’s a write-off. The swell is tiny, the wind is all over the place, and most of the time the surf is just poor. There’s a bit of a tease on the 28th of August, with a big 12 ft swell showing up, but it’s accompanied by strong onshore winds and a short 8-second period, making for a complete mess. That one’s for the kites, not the paddle.
The first real glimmer of hope comes on Saturday, the 29th of August, at Mewslade Bay. The morning session is the standout. We’re looking at a clean 7 ft swell from the WSW, with a light easterly breeze keeping the surface glassy. The combined energy is a solid 802 (moderate), and the model is calling it “very good surf conditions.” This is a proper, albeit short-lived, window. The swell is in the 6-8 ft range, which is solid intermediate territory and a bit much for absolute beginners. The wind is offshore, the waves have some push, and it’s the one time in the whole period where it all comes together. The crowds are a possibility here, as it can get busy.
The afternoon of that same day, the wind swings onshore and the quality drops right off.
After that, it’s mostly back to small, clean, but tiny waves until the 2nd of September. On Wednesday the 2nd, we get a bit of a pulse again out of the WSW, with chest-high 5 ft waves. The morning sees a clean offshore wind, but the period is a short 6 seconds, so it’ll be a bit bumpy and weak. The energy is 155 (moderate). It’s surfable, but it’s not going to be a world-beater. The 3rd of September morning is glassy but small.
So, to sum it up: the whole 16-day window is a drought, with one bright spot. If you’ve got a free morning on Saturday the 29th of August, get to Mewslade Bay. That’s the one. For the rest, stay patient.
Rusty.
