The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. Rusty here, looking at the next couple of weeks for Mewslade Bay.

Honestly, it’s a tough outlook. We’ve got a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions ahead. The swell is there at times, but the wind just isn’t playing ball for most of it. We’re looking at a solid 16-day window, but for a good chunk of that, you’ll be better off finding something else to do.

Right now, we start with Tuesday the 18th. There’s some swell around – about 4ft from the west with a short period of 7 seconds – but it’s a write-off. The wind is a strong cross-offshore, 16 mph, and the water is a very unusual 69°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. Don’t get excited though, the conditions are just poor.

That theme carries on through Wednesday and Thursday. We get a bit of a bump on Thursday morning, with the swell picking up to 4ft from the west-southwest, and the combined energy gets into the moderate range (188). The wind is cross-offshore from the northwest, so it’s clean, but the overall quality is still rated as poor. It’s just not coming together.

Friday the 21st morning is the first time we get a hint of something surfable, but it’s weak. A tiny 2ft from the west-southwest at 8 seconds. The wind is light offshore from the east-northeast, so the surface is clean, and the wave comment says it’s “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s as good as it gets for a while. It’s not a standout, just a minor session at best.

Saturday and Sunday drop right off. The swell fades to almost nothing – 1.0ft on Saturday, dropping to 0.3ft on Sunday. We get some glassy conditions on Saturday morning, but there’s no wave energy to play with. The period on Sunday morning stretches to 14 seconds, suggesting a very long period groundswell, but at 0.3ft, it’s a non-event.

Then there’s a real gap. From Monday the 24th through to the end of the first week, it’s a mix of tiny swell and bad wind. We get a spike of bigger, messy energy on Tuesday the 25th – 8ft from the southwest at 9 seconds, with a massive combined energy reading of 1419, meaning very strong wave energy. But the wind is howling cross-shore at 22 mph, making it a lumpy, choppy mess. That’s more of a kite-surfing setup than a paddle-surfing one, and definitely not for the faint of heart.

We finally get another slight glimmer on Thursday the 27th morning. A small 3ft from the southwest at 7 seconds, with a light offshore breeze from the north-northeast. It’s described as “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions” again. It’s clean, but tiny.

The best call in this whole 16-day stretch, and I’m reaching here, is that Thursday morning session (August 27th). It’s the only time the wind truly co-operates with clean, offshore conditions on a day with a hint of wave energy. The other option is Friday the 28th morning, with a moderate offshore wind and a 2ft swell, but it’s even smaller.

For the second week, it’s more of the same. A lot of onshore wind and small, weak swell. Tuesday the 1st of September picks up to 4ft, but the wind is onshore again. It’s a poor run.

Bottom line: If you’re desperate for a paddle, aim for Thursday the 27th of August or Friday the 28th of August morning for the cleanest, most surfable windows, but keep the expectations low. The rest is best left alone. It’s a frustrating forecast, but these things change. Hoping for a better run next time.

Rusty.
