The Lowdown
Alright, I’m looking at the forecast for the next 16 days, and honestly, it’s a bit of a tough one for us. The surf is going to be real small and pretty weak for most of the run, with a long gap of hardly anything worth paddling out for. The good news is we’ve got a little pulse of energy trying to show up late in the month, but it’s marginal at best.
The water is sitting at 69°F around Mewslade Bay, which is a full 9°F warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s very unusual—you’ll feel it as soon as you hop in.
From now through the end of July, we’re looking at a dry spell. Swell heights are barely a ripple, mostly 0.3ft to 0.7ft, with a few tiny bumps. The combined energy of all swells is just a whisper, with numbers like 13 or 15 (that’s weak). Winds are mostly clean, with some glassy mornings on the 18th, 20th, and 21st, but there’s no swell to work with. You’re better off staying home or going for a longboard cruise if you’re desperate. The only real change comes on the 27th of July, when we finally see a jump.
On Monday the 27th of July, the morning brings a 5ft swell from the west, with a period of 7 seconds – that’s a short period, so it’ll be a bit fat and not super organized. The combined energy is 247 (moderate), which is the strongest we’ve seen. The wind is a gentle cross-shore from the WNW, so it’s not too choppy, but the wave comment says it’s marginal. This is a beginner-friendly size, but the quality isn’t going to blow your mind. The 28th of July drops back to 4ft in the morning, with a clean cross-offshore wind from the NNW, and energy at 186 – still moderate. That might be your best bet for a quiet, clean session with some waist-high lines.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s no standout. If I had to pick the least bad option, it’s the morning of the 28th of July at Mewslade Bay. The 4ft swell from the west, combined with the clean northerly wind, will likely give you a few fun ones, but it’s not a day to get excited about. The break is fairly consistent, but crowds can be an issue here sometimes, so you might have some company.
The rest of the forecast into early August is back to tiny, weak surf, with energy values dropping into the double digits. It’s a quiet stretch, so keep your board waxed and wait for the next proper swell.
