The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for Mewslade Bay.
To be straight with you, the 16-day window is a bit of a write-off. There aren’t any good surf options on the table. We’ve got a long stretch of tiny, weak waves and mostly poor surf conditions. The whole period is a bit of a blank run, which is more normal for this area when the swell just isn’t lining up. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
The first surf recommendation kicks off on Wednesday, 15th July, but it’s a tough one. You’re looking at tiny 1.0ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 10 seconds. The combined wave energy is very weak (31). Wednesday morning has a cross-off E wind at 12 mph, keeping it clean, but there’s just no power. The afternoon turns glassy with a light W wind at 3 mph, but the swell is still tiny and the energy drops to 28. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
Thursday, 16th July, is even smaller. We’re down to 0.3ft to 0.7ft from the SW and WSW. The morning has a clean cross-off breeze, but the swell is barely there. The afternoon gets a cross-shore wind, which creates a slight chop on near-flat water.
Friday, 17th July, brings glassy conditions in the morning with a 0.7ft swell from the W, but the energy is a measly 7. The afternoon turns cross-onshore and choppy, making it even less appealing.
The rest of the week is a repeat of the same story. From Saturday, 18th July, through to the end of the month, we’re stuck with tiny waves between 0.3ft and 2ft. The swell is mostly from the W or WSW, with periods varying from 6 to 14 seconds. The combined energy never gets above 35, which is very weak. Winds are often cross-off, cross, or cross-onshore, with a few glassy moments but no swell to back them up.
The best of a bad bunch might be the early morning of Saturday, 25th July, when the swell bumps up to 2ft from the W with a short period of 6 seconds. The energy is still weak (29), and the cross-shore wind is light, but it’s a glimmer of hope in a flat spell. Still, for a beginner, that’s fine, but it’s not going to get the heart pumping.
Honestly, for the whole 16 days, there’s nothing that’s a standout. The setup is so small and weak that it’s more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, especially when the wind picks up.
Keep your eyes on the forecast, but for now, this is a stay-at-home kind of window.
Rusty.
