The Lowdown

Alright, let’s get into it. The report’s a bit of a flat spell for Lincoln (Long Beach) over the next 16 days, so I’ll be straight with you.

Right off the bat, there’s no real surf on offer. We’re looking at a long stretch where the energy just isn’t there. The first few days, from Tuesday the 4th through to the end of the first week, are all weak. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 ft, and the period is short—around 6 to 7 seconds—so it’s just windswell, not groundswell. The combined energy is low, reading between 30 and 119 (moderate at best), but the real killer is the wind. Most of the time it’s onshore or cross-onshore, making for choppy, messy conditions. The only morning that stands out a little is Tuesday the 4th, with a clean 3 ft from the SSE, light cross-off breeze, but it’s still a weak 7-second period. The water temp is 76°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a small comfort.

The pattern continues through the second week—more of the same. Small swell, short period, and a lot of wind from the south or southwest. There’s a bit of a gap from around the 10th to the 13th where the swell drops to 1 ft or 2 ft, and energy falls to 10 or 21. That’s basically flat. You’d be better off with a longboard or a paddleboard on those days.

Now, there’s a flicker of hope on the 19th, which is a Wednesday. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the SSW, with a 6-second period, and the combined energy jumps to 141 (moderate). But here’s the problem: the wind is a strong 16 mph from the SSW, cross-onshore, so it’s going to be choppy and blown out. Not ideal for a clean session. Still, it’s the best of a bad bunch—just don’t expect perfection.

For the whole period, there’s no standout break. The only break in the file is Lincoln (Long Beach), and it’s a breakwater setup, exposed to the south. It’s a beginner-friendly spot, but the crowds are often there, so you’ll have company even on the small days. The optimum swell direction is from the south, but the swell we get is mostly from the SSE or S, so it’s okay but not perfect.

Bottom line: if you’re desperate, try the morning of the 4th for a tiny clean wave, or wait for the 19th for a bigger but messier option. Otherwise, this is a quiet period. The area tends to have these blank runs, so don’t stress—it’ll turn around.

Rusty.
