The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for Fort Cronkite Rodeo Beach.
Right off the bat, I gotta be honest with you – the next two weeks look pretty grim for anything worth paddling out for. This spot is a sandbar setup that's sheltered from the main swell, and it's just not catching much of anything clean. The water is sitting at 62° – that's a massive 6° warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual.
We start off with Saturday, July 18th. Swell is a tiny 2ft from the SW, with a super long period of 17 seconds. That's a nice groundswell, but it's not wrapping in here. The combined energy is moderate (494), but the wind is onshore and the surf is just poor. Not a single wave worth mentioning. That carries right through the rest of the weekend and into the start of the week. Sunday and Monday are the same story – 2ft, onshore wind, poor surf.
Tuesday, July 21st, the swell bumps up to 3ft from the SSW, period drops to 13 seconds. The morning has light onshore wind, but it's still only marginal at best. The afternoons are all cross-onshore and choppy. This pattern basically holds all the way through the end of July. Swell stays between 2ft and 4ft, but it's never clean.
There is a bit of a pulse around Friday, July 24th. The swell is still only 2ft, but the period jumps to a very long 24 seconds from the SW, and the energy climbs to 862 (strong). But again, the wind is onshore and the surf quality is listed as poor. That long period would be great for a point or reef, but on a beach break like this with onshore wind, it's just gonna be a messy, straight closeout.
The same goes for Saturday, July 25th. The morning has 3ft from the SW with a 21-second period, combined energy hits 1077 (strong to very strong). It's still only a marginal call. The wind is onshore again. This is the best of a very bad bunch, but it's still not a standout.
The truth is, there is no standout in this 16-day window. There are no days where the stars align. The swell is either too small, or the wind is junk. For a beach break that's this sheltered, it's a pretty blank run. If you're a kite surfer, the cross-onshore winds and moderate chop might look interesting, but for paddle surfing, it's a hard pass.
We do see a few more marginal mornings at the very end of the month and into August 1st, with 3ft to 3ft and light onshore breezes, but the swell period drops off and the energy fades. The forecast is a long way out, so it might change, but right now, don't hold your breath.
Rusty, signing off.
