The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it for Fort Cronkite Rodeo Beach.
Right off the bat, I’ve gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing much to get excited about. The surf just isn’t cooperating, and the conditions are messy. There’s a solid gap here where you can basically write the first week off. From Wednesday the 15th right through to the end of July, the reports are consistently poor. The water is a very unusual 62° right now, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only thing out of the ordinary.
Let’s break down the first few days. Wednesday the 15th morning sees a 5ft swell from the WNW, but with a short period of 8 seconds and a light onshore breeze, it’s not going to be a pretty picture. The combined energy is weak at 463. By the afternoon, the wind picks up to 12 mph and goes cross-onshore, chopping up that 6ft swell. That sets the theme for the rest of the week. Thursday and Friday are similar grim stories: 6ft to 7ft of wind-affected, short-period WNW swell with cross-onshore winds. The wave energy climbs to 1169 on Friday morning, but it's all for nothing with the poor conditions. This setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing, I’m not going to lie.
We do see a shift in swell direction towards the weekend, with a SW groundswell arriving Saturday the 18th. The period jumps to a very long 17 seconds, which is great for shape, but the size drops right down to 2ft. The combined energy is moderate at 531. Unfortunately, the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, keeping it a sloppy mess. This pattern of small, long-period SW swell and poor winds continues through the entire second week. The wave energy fluctuates, hitting a peak of 1538 on Saturday the 25th with a 4ft SSW swell, but the wind is just never in our favor.
Even the mornings that have a light onshore breeze, like the 22nd, 24th, and 25th, are only rated as marginal at best. The swell is too small and the cross-onshore afternoon winds ruin any chance of a clean session. For a spot that’s very consistent, this is a real bummer of a forecast. It’s a classic case of a blocked-out pattern that just won’t let up. We’re stuck with small, poorly-shaped waves and onshore gunk all the way through to the end of the month.
Stay patient, folks. It tends not to stay poor for long around here, and forecasts can change. But for now, I’d be finding something else to do.
