Alright, this is Rusty. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Fort Cronkite Rodeo Beach for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, the outlook is a bit of a struggle. For the first week or so, every single entry is rated as poor surf conditions, so I wouldn’t even bother paddling out. The first real sniff of anything happens on Wednesday, July 8th, and even that’s just a marginal forecast. That morning, the swell bumps up to 7ft out of the northwest with a short, weak period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is strong (1397), but the wind’s offshore from the west-southwest at only 6 mph, which sounds clean enough. The problem is the period is too short to hold any shape properly, and the report flags it as marginal. A bit of a tease.
Thursday, July 9th morning looks a little more promising, with a 8ft swell from the north-west, but again it’s a short period (9 seconds). The combined energy is very strong (1937), and the wind is offshore light from the west-southwest at 6 mph. But here’s the thing – that’s getting into expert-only territory size-wise, and with that short period, it’s gonna be a bumpy, powerful mess. For a sheltered sandbar like this, short-period north-west swell tends to just wall up and close out.
After that, the whole run from Friday, July 10th all the way through to Tuesday, July 14th is more poor surf conditions with onshore or cross-onshore winds. The swell drops back to the 4ft to 6ft range, but the wind is always messing it up with moderate breezes.
Then we hit a gap. From Wednesday, July 15th through to Tuesday, July 21st, it’s just a long stretch of tiny leftovers – 2ft to 2ft swells from the west and south-west with moderate cross-onshore winds. Nothing worth getting wet for.
If I had to pick the best of a bad lot, it’s Thursday morning, July 9th. But honestly, that’s more of a “keep your expectations low” kind of standout. The water is sitting at 62°F, which is a whopping 7° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s really unusual, and you’ll notice it when you get in.
So, until something changes, I’d say give it a miss. For a beach that’s very consistent, it’s a dry spell. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
