The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get straight into it for this stretch. We’re looking at a pretty bleak run, I gotta be honest. The forecast is calling for a long, dry spell with almost nothing to get excited about.

Right now, and for the next several days, it’s a write-off. From Thursday 6th August right through to the morning of Sunday 16th August, there’s just no swell to speak of. We’re looking at a solid 10-day gap where the surf is basically non-existent. The wind is howling out of the north and north-northeast, 19 to 25 mph, and it’s all cross-shore, making a mess of things. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so not much to say there.

Then, on the morning of Sunday 16th August, we finally see a tiny pulse of swell. It’s a long-period groundswell from the south with a period of 14 seconds, but the size is only 0.3 ft. The combined energy is a weak 4. Winds are cross-onshore, moderate at 12 mph, so it’s not clean. This is still poor surf conditions, and at 0.3 ft, you’re not catching anything.

The pattern continues, with a slightly better showing on Monday 17th August afternoon. The swell stays tiny at 0.3 ft, still from the south, but the period jumps to 15 seconds – that’s a very long groundswell, which can be a tease. The combined energy hits 8. Still, with a fresh north wind at 19 mph and cross-shore, it’s lumpy and messy. Poor surf all round.

The only real standout – if you can call it that – is the afternoon of Tuesday 18th August. A tiny 0.3 ft swell from the southwest with a period of 14 seconds. The combined energy is 7. But the wind is still a fresh 22 mph cross-shore from the north. It’s poor.

Honestly, folks, this whole stretch is a dud. The break here, El Cable - Playa Honda, is a sheltered reef that’s inconsistent at the best of times, and it’s not offering anything for the next 16 days. If you’ve got a kite, the strong cross-shore winds might be more interesting than a surfboard. Otherwise, keep the board in the car and wait for a better forecast.

Rusty.
