The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, letting you know what’s on the cards for the next couple of weeks. It’s a bit of a flat spell right now, so we’re gonna have to sit on our hands for the first few days.
The next two weeks start off pretty slow, with a long stretch of poor conditions through the first week. The main break to keep an eye on is Blackies – a beach-and-point setup that’s inconsistent at the best of times. The water is sitting around 70°, which feels a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so you might not need the thickest wetsuit.
The weekend of the 21st and 22nd is a write-off. We’re looking at knee-high, 0.4ft to 0.5ft swell coming from the SSW, with a decent 13 to 15-second period, but the combined energy is weak (around 130 to 158). The winds are onshore or cross-onshore, so it’s nothing but small, messy lines. Honestly, not worth paddling out.
Through the whole first week, the pattern stays much the same – small SSW to SW swell, heights barely hitting 0.6ft, and consistent cross-onshore breeze from the WSW or W. The combined energy is modest at best, mostly between 241 and 333. Even when the swell bumps up a little around Monday the 24th, it’s still only reaching a marginal 0.6ft. It’s frustrating, but this inconsistent setup means a run like this is pretty normal for the area.
The first real change comes overnight into Wednesday the 26th of August. A bigger pulse of S swell moves in, pushing up to 5ft to 5ft with a 14-second period. The combined energy jumps into the moderate range (1033 to 1057). The onshore wind from the S is going to keep it a bit choppy, but this is the most size we’ve seen. The swell height makes it a bit much for beginners, but not yet expert-only. This is the only real standout of the first week, offering some punch.
After that, the swell drops back down into marginal territory for the rest of the week, with heights around 2ft to 3ft, and cross-onshore winds wrecking any potential.
The outlook for the second week looks quiet again until we get to Saturday the 5th of September. That morning, a new S swell is forecast to arrive, pumping up to 6ft with a 14-second period and combined energy shooting up to 1789 – that’s strong wave energy. The wind looks like it’ll be light and offshore from the SSW, which would make for clean, lined-up sets. This is your best bet for a good session, but it’s a long-range call, so don’t lock it in just yet. The size will be pushing into expert-only territory.
There are no other breaks in the data, so Blackies is the only option on the table. It’s going to be a waiting game, but it tends not to stay this poor for long.
Rusty.
