The Lowdown
Alright, let’s break it down in feet and miles per hour, folks. Rusty here again.
Right now, it’s a slow start. From Friday the 17th all the way to Tuesday the 22nd of July, it’s pretty much a no-go. The swell is tiny, about 1 to 3 feet, with a messy cross-on breeze from the south and west. The water is sitting at about 69°, a touch warmer than usual. The wave energy is weak to moderate. Not worth getting wet for.
We get a little pulse on Sunday the 19th and Monday the 20th of July. Swell comes up to about 3 feet from the S and SSW, with light onshore wind. The energy is moderate, around 529 to 530. It’s a beach and point break, but it’s inconsistent and often crowded. It’s just marginal, a few rideable waves, but nothing to get stoked about.
The real action starts Friday the 24th of July. This is where it gets interesting. The swell from the S and SSW builds. On the 24th, we see a 4-foot S swell Friday afternoon with light onshore wind. The combined energy jumps to 906. Then Saturday the 25th morning has a 3-foot SSW swell, but with a very long period of 21 seconds, and the energy kicks up to 1182. That’s a solid groundswell building.
The best days are the 27th and 28th of July. Monday the 27th morning brings a 4-foot SW swell with an 18-second period, and energy of 1145. The wind is light and onshore, so it’ll be glassy. Tuesday the 28th morning is even better, with a 5-foot SW swell, 17-second period, and energy of 1149. Light onshore wind again. This is the pick of the forecast. The optimum direction is W, and we’re getting SW and SSW, which isn’t perfect, but with that long period and clean conditions, Blackies will be offering up some proper groundswell. It’s a point break, so that long period is a treat. Just remember, it’s inconsistent and often crowded, so get in early.
The biggest swell of the period comes on Friday the 31st of July morning, with a 6-foot S swell, a 14-second period, and energy of 1345. That’s strong. But the wind is light onshore, and it’s a bit on the bigger side for this spot. That one’s for the experts.
After that, the first of August looks like it’s fading out again, with smaller swells and cross-on winds. So, make the most of that last week of July.
Rusty.
