The Lowdown
Right folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a tough stretch of surf ahead. We’ve got a lot of mediocre to poor conditions lining up, and it’s going to take a while before we see anything worth getting properly excited about. The swell is coming in from the SW to S, but the wind is mostly cross-onshore or onshore, which is making a mess of things. The water temp at Blackies is 69°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
The first real chance of something decent doesn’t come until the morning of Saturday the 25th of July. The combined swell energy is strong at 967, with a 3ft swell from the SSW on a very long 21-second period. That kind of period means the swell will be very powerful, but it can break straight at beach breaks. Blackies is a beach and point, so it might hold up okay. The wind is a light cross-onshore from the SSW, so it won’t be glassy, but it’s not a total write-off. The crowds are often here, so expect company.
The next morning, Sunday the 26th of July, is similar – a 3ft SSW swell with a 19-second period, good energy (931), and light cross-onshore wind. It’s another marginal call, but one of the better options.
The standout window, if you can wait, looks like the morning of Friday the 31st of July. We’ve got a 6ft swell from the S on a 15-second period, with a huge combined energy of 1509. That’s strong wave energy. The wind is light onshore from the WSW, which is a shame, but at that size, Blackies will be a heavy, powerful wave. 6ft is getting into the territory where it’s too big for beginners, and it’s edging towards expert-only. The morning of Saturday the 1st of August is in the same ballpark with a 6ft S swell, but the wind is still cross-onshore.
Before that 25th, it’s a real grind. From the 18th right through to the 24th, the surf is poor or marginal at best, with small waves and choppy conditions. There’s a solid 6-day gap where I wouldn’t bother paddling out.
The final day in the window, the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August, sees the swell drop right back to 4ft from the SSW but with a much shorter period of 10 seconds. The energy is weak (322), and the wind is light onshore. It’s not a day to get excited about.
So, the pick of the bunch is the morning of the 31st of July if you’re an experienced surfer looking for some power, followed by the weekend mornings of the 25th and 26th of July for something a bit more manageable. Keep your expectations low for the rest.
Rusty.
