Table - best surf conditions forecast for Blackies over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. I’ve been over the charts for Blackies, and I gotta level with you—it’s a rough patch ahead. A long stretch of small, junky surf, with only one real flash of something bigger right at the tail end. Let’s walk through it.
We kick off on Wednesday, July 8th. The morning is your best early bet, with a clean 3ft swell from the SSW, a long 16-second period—that’s real groundswell energy (combined energy of 661), and the wind is light and offshore from the SSW, so it’ll be glassy. The water’s at 67°, which is about average for the season. But Blackies is an inconsistent spot, and the model’s calling it marginal. The afternoon goes cross-onshore, and it’s downhill from there.
From Thursday, July 9th, all the way through Tuesday, July 22nd, it’s a slog. Swell stays tiny, mostly 1ft to 3ft, with periods dropping from 16 seconds down to 12 seconds. The wind is nearly always cross-onshore or cross, chopping up what little energy there is. The combined energy figures are weak, mostly in the 100s and 200s. There are a few mornings with light offshore wind, like on the 13th and 15th, but the swell is just too small—3ft and 1ft respectively. It’s a long, flat, frustrating spell.
Then, on Monday, July 20th, things finally wake up. The swell jumps to 6ft from the S, with a period of 14 seconds and a strong combined energy of 1365 (moderate to strong). But the wind is cross-onshore, and it’s still labeled marginal. That wave height is over 5ft, so it’s not for beginners, but not quite expert territory. The direction is S, a bit off the optimum W, so it won’t be perfect. This is the one standout of the whole forecast, but it’s a long way off and the conditions aren’t clean.
If I had to pick a single session, it’s that Wednesday morning on the 8th. Glassy 3ft groundswell, light offshore wind, and the water’s fine. It’s the only time things almost line up, and even then it’s marginal. Crowds at Blackies can pop up, but with this outlook, you’ll probably have it to yourself.
The rest of the run, especially the whole second week, is a write-off. Small, choppy, inconsistent. Don’t bother.
Rusty.
