The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty, and I've got the rundown on Blackies for the next couple of weeks. It's a beach and point setup, fairly exposed, and it's usually an intermediate spot. Right now, the water temp is sitting at 70°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year.
Honestly, the outlook is a bit grim. We've got a long stretch of small, weak swells and poor conditions. There's a gap here with no real recommendations from the start until the 29th of August. That's over a week of nothing to write home about. The swell energy is mostly weak, starting around 327 (combined energy) on Wednesday the 19th and dropping into the low hundreds – that's barely any push. The winds are mostly cross-onshore, leaving the surface choppy, and the waves are tiny, ranging from 1ft to 3ft. The setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing during this period.
The best bet on offer is the morning of Saturday the 29th of August. Now, it's a long-range call, so keep that in mind, but it's our standout. We'll see a clean 3ft swell from the SSW with a long period of 17 seconds. That's a proper groundswell, and the combined energy is a solid 649 (moderate wave energy). The wind is light and offshore from the WSW, so it should be glassy and clean. The period is long, so it might break a bit straight at the beach, but the point should offer up some fun lines. It's not huge, so it's a good option for intermediates.
The Sunday the 30th morning is also a chance, with a 4ft SSW swell (15 seconds, combined energy 571) and light offshore winds. It's a bit more size, but still manageable. Crowds are often at Blackies, so get there early.
After that, we're back into the small stuff. The 31st of August has a 3ft SSW swell with light cross-onshore winds, but it's just marginal. The first week of September looks poor with tiny waves and cross-onshore winds across the board.
So, to wrap it up: the long wait is on until the 29th of August. That Saturday morning is your best bet with a clean, long-period groundswell. Don't get your hopes up for much else.
Rusty.
