The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, this is a pretty quiet stretch for Blackies. The first few days are a write-off – through Thursday and Friday the 16th and 17th, there’s just tiny, messy 1ft swell with cross-onshore winds. The water is a touch warmer than usual at 69°, but that’s the only highlight. You’re looking at weak energy and poor conditions. Not worth paddling out.
Saturday the 18th is a little better with 2ft of swell and a bit more energy, but it’s still cross-onshore. The action picks up slightly on Sunday the 19th morning. The swell bumps to 4ft from the south with a 14-second period, and the wind shifts to straight onshore. The energy is moderate. It’s still marginal. That’s the best you’ll see for a while, but it’s nothing to get excited about.
Monday the 20th has similar 4ft south swell with light cross-onshore wind, but again, it’s marginal. After that, the swell drops back to 2-3ft through the rest of the week, with mostly cross-onshore winds and poor to marginal conditions. The energy readings stay in the low to moderate range.
The real standout in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Friday the 24th of July. Swell height hits 5ft from the south with a 13-second period, and the energy is strong. It’s a bit full for beginners, but for experienced surfers, there’s potential. The catch is the wind is cross-onshore, so it won’t be glassy. It’s the most punch you’ll get, but not perfect.
After that, the last few days of the month drift back into smaller 2-4ft swell with onshore to cross-onshore winds. The weekend of the 26th-27th has some long-period 19-second groundswell, but it’s small and the wind isn’t cooperating. Blackies is a beach and point break, so that long-period stuff might be a bit too straight for the beach, but the point could handle it if the tide lines up.
Overall, there’s no real gem here. Friday the 24th morning is the only day that has enough size to get your heart pumping, but don’t expect perfect conditions. If you’re desperate, keep an eye on the forecasts – sometimes these quiet runs don’t last.
Rusty.
