The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you on this one. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for a proper paddle. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak, and choppy conditions ahead at Blackies (beach and point). The water is a balmy 69.3°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so at least you won't freeze while you're staring at it.
The first real chance of anything rideable doesn't kick in until Sunday, July 19th. Through the weekend and into the following week, we see a bit of a bump, but it’s nothing to write home about. The swell stays small, mostly around 1.3 ft to 4.3 ft, coming from the SW and S, but the wind is a constant problem—cross-onshore and choppy for most of it. The whole period is a graveyard of “poor surf conditions” notes.
There is one little window that might be worth a look if you’re desperate. On Thursday, July 23rd, we see a solid pulse of S swell hitting 4.6 ft (cross-onshore) and building to 4.9 ft (onshore) in the afternoon. The combined energy jumps right up to 1041 (moderate energy) and then 1055. It’s still messy, but the wind is light, so it might be cleaner than the rest of the slop. That carries into Friday, July 24th with the swell holding at 4.9 ft to 6.2 ft, period stretching to 16 seconds, and energy hitting a massive 1935 to 1977. That’s a lot of juice, but at 6.2 ft, it’s pushing into expert-only territory at a beach break, and with that long period, it’s likely to be too straight and dumpy. Still, if you’ve got a step-up and a death wish, that Friday morning might be the best of a bad bunch.
Other than that, it’s a slog. The 26th has a flicker of 2.6 ft, 19-second groundswell, but it’s cross-onshore again. The 27th and 28th mornings have light onshore winds and small swell, but it’s marginal. Honestly, this stretch looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, with the constant cross-breeze and building swell.
Hang in there. It’s a dry spell, but forecasts change.
