Alright, Rusty here. Let’s talk about what’s coming up at Blackies.
Look, for the next two weeks, it’s a pretty lean stretch. We’ve got a very long period, 18-second groundswell rolling in from the SSW, but the size is tiny, only 2ft. The water’s a touch warmer than normal for this time of year at 67°, which is a nice little bonus. But the real problem is that for most of the next seven days, the wind is going to mess things up. It’s consistently cross-onshore or worse, chopping the surface up. The combined swell energy is moderate, in the 300s to low 400s (372), but it’s just not translating to anything rideable.
A few mornings – Monday the 6th, Tuesday the 7th – the swell bumps up to 3ft with that same long-period SSW groundswell, and the light cross-onshore wind keeps it just on the edge of maybe being surfable. The energy gets up to moderate-high levels (744 on Tuesday morning), but the guidance calls it marginal or poor. It’s not worth paddling out for unless you’re super keen for a grovel session.
After a week of frustrating, choppy afternoons, we finally get a window on Saturday the 11th. The afternoon goes glassy – dead calm wind – with 3ft of SSW swell. That’s the standout moment. It’s still small, but with glassy conditions, you might actually find a clean little wave to trim on. The energy is weak (288), but when it turns to glass, Blackies can be fun. Just know it’s an inconsistent spot, and when it’s this small, you gotta be patient.
Beyond that, the second week sees the swell drop right off. By the 14th, we’re down to 2ft, and the energy falls to a weak 141. There are hints of another pulse around the 18th-19th, with a 3ft SSW swell and onshore flow, but it’s a long way out. Keep an eye on it, but don’t get your hopes up.
Best bet? That Saturday afternoon glass-off on the 11th. It’s not gonna be epic, but it’s the cleanest you’ll see Blackies for a while.
