Table - best surf conditions forecast for Blackies over the next 16 days.
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ve got to be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Blackies are looking pretty grim overall. It’s a real scratch-and-claw situation for the most part, with only one brief window that might get your hopes up.
We start off with a long, flat run. The first real chance to even think about getting wet won’t come until Saturday the 18th of July. That’s a solid week away from now. Up until then, it’s a wasteland of poor surf conditions. The swell hangs around a weak 1ft to 3ft from the SSW or SW, and the wind is nearly always a cross-onshore mess. The combined swell energy barely cracks 300 (moderate wave energy) and is often well below, with a score of zero. It’s mainly beach-and-point but inconsistent, and it’s just not working.
Now, let’s talk about that Saturday the 18th of July. This is the one true standout in the whole outlook. Saturday morning, we might finally get a break. The swell is coming in from the SW at 2ft, but here’s the kicker – the period is a very long 18 seconds. That’s real groundswell energy, and it’ll have some punch. Even better, it’s glassy with a slight cross-offshore breeze from the NNW. That means clean, peeling faces. The combined swell energy is 274 (moderate wave energy), but everything else lines up. Just keep in mind, this spot is inconsistent by nature, so it’s a bit of a dice roll. It’s the best on offer by a mile.
The fun won’t last. That same afternoon, the wind swings to the NW and picks up, turning it choppy with a score of zero. Then on Sunday the 19th of July, the swell kicks up to a solid 6ft from the S, but the wind is a cross-onshore from the S at 9 mph. That’s a lot of energy (1476, strong to very strong wave energy), but it’s going to be a messy, choppy wall. For the experienced crew only, and even then, the quality is marginal. Then it’s back to the doldrums for the rest of the period, with nothing but poor surf and onshore winds until the 24th of July.
Honestly, if you’re a paddler, mark your calendar for Saturday morning the 18th of July. Otherwise, it’s a long wait. The forecasts can change, but right now, it’s a tough run.
Rusty.
