The Lowdown
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here, and I’ve gotta say, the outlook over the next 16 days for Vilas has me a little flat. The only real window of interest is a tiny, fleeting one on Friday morning, August 21st, and that’s about it. After that, it’s a long, dusty stretch of "why even bother" right through to the end of the forecast.
Let’s get into it. The only time you’ll find anything worthwhile is first thing Friday morning, the 21st of August. The wind is glassy, dead calm out of the NE at just 3 mph, and the water is a warm 79°, which is about average for this time of year. The swell is a small 4 ft, coming from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is weak at 154. It’s surfable, but really ordinary. That’s it for the whole run. The rest of the day Friday and every single day after that is plagued by onshore and cross-onshore winds that just tear it up. The swell is tiny, the period is short, and the conditions are poor.
For beginners, this Friday morning wave is small enough to handle, but it’s not going to be any kind of standout. The bigger problem is there’s nothing else. We’re looking at a gap of over two weeks with no real recommendations. The swell does try to pick up a little toward the end of August and into early September, with a few pulses of Southern Hemisphere energy showing up around the 26th to the 28th, with some long-period groundswell (15 to 17 seconds) and moderate wave energy (400 to 520). But the wind is coming from the east or southeast, straight onshore, and it’s choppy. At 3 ft with a long period like that, it’s just going to close out on a beach break like this. Honestly, that setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
Stick to the glassy dawn patrol on the 21st if you’re desperate. Otherwise, I’d leave the boards at home.
Rusty.
