The Lowdown
Alright, grab a coffee and have a listen. It’s Rusty here.
Honestly, looking at the charts for the next couple of weeks, I gotta say, it’s a pretty flat and frustrating run for Vilas. The whole 16-day window is basically a write-off. We’ve got a solid run of days with nothing really worth paddling out for. The good news is that this spot is usually pretty consistent, so this kind of blank run is a bit of an anomaly. Forecasts can change, and a few days of onshore junk can flip.
The first thing worth noting is the water temp. It’s about average for this time of year, so don’t expect any surprises when you first get in.
We start off with a real dud on Sunday, the 19th of July. Onshore wind from the SE at 15 mph is just ruining the 7 ft swell. It’s just a messy, choppy ocean. The combined energy is still moderate (624), but it’s all wind-slop. The best you can say is it might be interesting for kite surfing, but for a paddle surfer? Hard pass.
We have a gap of almost four days of poor surf conditions before we get the one and only glimpse of hope. Hit Wednesday morning, the 22nd of July. The wind goes glassy, a light 3 mph from the ENE, and the combined energy makes a slight jump to moderate (448). The swell is 6 ft from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds. This is your true standout. It’s not a massive swell, but glassy conditions at a wave that is very consistent create the best chance you’ll get all fortnight. The wave will be clean, but it’s still a bit of a wind-swell, so don’t expect any long walls. You’ll have to battle the onshore wind the rest of the day, but that morning window is the one to chase.
After that, the rest of the outlook is grim. The swell drops off, the wind stays onshore or cross-onshore, and the wave energy gets weaker and weaker. From Wednesday the 23rd of July all the way through to the end of the period on Monday the 3rd of August, it’s a constant stream of poor surf conditions. The combined energy drops into the low triple digits (100-200 range), and the swell period stays short, under 8 seconds. The wind is mostly from the east or southeast, keeping it choppy and messy. There’s no point getting your hopes up. The only thing that might change is the wind or a new swell, but right now, the outlook is a flat, blown-out wait.
Rusty.
