The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on offer for this stretch. It's gonna be a slow start, no two ways about it. We're looking at a pretty poor run of conditions across the whole of this period, so don't go getting your hopes up too early. The water temp is sitting around 79°, which is pretty much bang on normal for this time of year, just a touch warmer than average if anything.
Alright, the first sniff of anything rideable isn't until the morning of Friday the 21st of August over at Tercera Ponte. You'll find a small 3ft swell pushing in from the ESE with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is very weak (131). Morning brings a light NNW wind, which is cross-off, but the whole setup is just ordinary – surfable, but nothing to write home about. That afternoon the wind swings onshore from the ESE and any hope of a wave gets chopped up.
Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are a write-off. Too much cross or cross-onshore wind, with the swell dropping to a mix of 3ft and 3ft. It's all junky and messy.
We crawl through the rest of next week with tiny, weak swells and mostly onshore winds. The swell sizes stay around the 2ft to 3ft mark, but the wind just wrecks everything. The morning of Thursday the 27th of August has a glimpse of a very long period SSE groundswell at 16 seconds, but it's only 2ft and the wind is cross. The energy is moderate (306), but the conditions are only marginal. It's a classic case of all period, no power, especially at a spot that can be a bit inconsistent when the swell doesn't have the right angle; it's just not worth the paddle.
The first morning that looks genuinely decent won't come around until Monday the 31st of August. That morning, the wind goes light and cross-off from the NE, cleaning up a 4ft swell from the ESE. The period is a short 8 seconds, but the clean conditions (233) will make it look a fair bit better than anything else we've seen. If you can, that Monday morning is the standout window for the next ten days – it’s the first time we get a clean face with some waist-to-chest high sets. It’s not a big swell, but with the NE offshore, Tercera Ponte will be tidy. Expect a few others with the same idea, because when it’s clean around here, it gets a crowd.
A few other mornings in the first week of September (1st and 2nd of September mornings) offer some cross-off winds, but the swell is similar and the energy is building, especially on the 2nd where the energy jumps (190 to 374 by the afternoon). The wind on those mornings is clean, but the wave quality is still only described as "surfable" at best, and it's so far out that it's hard to get too excited. After the 2nd, it's back into a messy onshore pattern right through to the end of the 16-day run.
Honestly, if you’re not surfing that Monday (31st August) morning, I wouldn’t bother getting the board wet for the rest of the window. The wind is just too persistent from the East to give us anything clean, and the swell never really gets enough size or quality to overcome it. It's a long blank run for the most part.
