The Lowdown
Right, let’s have a look at what’s on offer for Tercera Ponte.
First thing you need to know, this stretch is exposed to the south, so it’s got the right idea, but the wind is going to be a screaming battle for the first week and a half. The water is sitting at 79°, with the anomaly at 0.9°, so that’s about what you’d expect for the time of year – no surprises there.
The run starts on Saturday, 18 July, but don’t get excited. We’ve got a 5ft SSE swell with a short, weak 11-second period, and the wind is howling cross-on from the ESE at 18 mph. The wave energy is strong (1080), but the quality is just poor – lumpy and messy. Sunday, 19 July, is even worse: 7ft of wonky SE windswell at 8 seconds, with the same cross-on trash. This is kite-surfing territory, not paddle surfing.
Monday, 20 July, through to Wednesday, 29 July, is a continuous grind of poor conditions. Swell stays between 2ft and 6ft, mostly from the ESE or SE, but the wind refuses to play ball – cross-on every time, with speeds ranging from 9 mph to 18 mph. The wave energy dips from moderate (441) to weak (152) at times, but the surf is never clean. There’s a brief glimmer on Thursday, 23 July, when the wind goes light and cross-shore, but it’s still only 4ft, poor quality, and the forecast says “marginal.” Not worth wetting a wetsuit for.
Then, on Friday, 24 July, we get a tiny window. The morning shows a 4ft ESE swell, and the wind goes light cross-offshore from the NE at 3 mph, with the wave comment saying “clean.” The wave energy is weak (179), but it’s the only half-decent moment in two weeks. Surfable, but very ordinary.
From Saturday, 25 July, to Thursday, 30 July, it’s back to poor surf, with the swell dropping to 2ft-3ft and the wind gusting cross-on or onshore. The wave energy is weak (99-365). Not a single standout.
Now, look ahead to Friday, 31 July. The morning brings a 5ft ESE swell with glassy conditions – wind from the NW at 3 mph, and the wave comment says “glassy.” The wave energy is moderate (280). This is the one bright spot. It’s still a beach break with a short 8-second period, so it won’t be perfect, but it’ll be clean and fun for a beginner. It’s only a 2/5 rating, but it’s the best we’ve got.
The final weekend, 1-2 August, brings a bigger pulse: 7ft-8ft ESE swell with a 9-10 second period. The wave energy jumps to strong (750-1403), but the wind is trash – cross-on and onshore, gusting 12-18 mph. The morning of Saturday, 1 August, might be borderline with a light cross-shore, but it’s still 7ft, which is too big for beginners and only for experts. And with that wind, it’s going to be a washing machine. Better for the kite crew.
So, the honest truth? There’s a 10-day gap of no good surf from 18 July to 28 July, with only one clean morning on 24 July and a glassy one on 31 July. The best bet is the morning of Friday, 31 July, for a clean, small wave session. It’s a consistent break, so crowds are likely, but with that rating, you might have it to yourself.
