The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Gotta be straight with you – the next couple of weeks at Tercera Ponte are looking pretty grim. We’ve got a decent amount of swell energy coming in, but it’s all from the wrong direction and the wind is just going to mess it up. The water’s sitting at 79°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so that’s not the issue.
The problem starts right now, on Sunday the 19th. We’ve got a 7ft swell from the SE, but it’s arriving with a short period of 8 seconds and a fresh 19 mph onshore wind. The combined energy is moderate at 598, but with that wind, it’s just a messy, choppy lineup. Not worth paddling out for.
Monday the 20th drops to 4ft, but the wind is still cross-onshore and the period is short. Still poor. Tuesday the 21st is more of the same with a bit more size at 6ft, but the wind is stronger and the rain showers are coming in. It’s a write-off.
We get a slight glimmer on Wednesday the 22nd morning. The swell drops to 6ft, but the wind swings to a gentle cross-shore, making it just slightly less messy. They’re calling it “marginal,” and honestly, that’s the best we’ve got. The energy is still moderate (522), but it’s the only time the wind isn’t fully onshore.
Thursday the 23rd morning is another marginal call. The swell drops to 5ft, and the wind is light and cross-shore, so it might be small and mediocre, but at least you won’t be fighting the wind. The energy is down to 250.
After that, it’s a long stretch of poor conditions. From Friday the 24th all the way through to Saturday the 1st of August, the swell is small (2ft to 4ft), the period is short, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore. The energy dips into the weak zone, hitting 73 on the 31st. There’s a single morning on Thursday the 30th where the wind goes glassy, but the swell is a tiny 3ft with a 7-second period. It’s clean, but there’s barely a wave to ride.
The one true standout in this whole 16-day window is the morning of Sunday the 2nd of August. The swell jumps to 5ft from the ESE, with a 7-second period. The energy is moderate at 263. More importantly, the wind is a gentle cross-offshore breeze, which should make for clean, lined-up waves. This is the only session that looks genuinely good, even if it’s a bit of a wait. It’s a beginner-friendly size, so it’s a good one for the learners.
Monday the 3rd of August sees a bump in size to 5ft, but the wind turns onshore again, so that window closes fast.
So, bottom line: the next two weeks are mostly a bust. The wind is the enemy, and the swell direction is poor. If you’re desperate, the morning of the 22nd of July is the least bad option before the 2nd of August. That Sunday morning of the 2nd is the clear winner – clean, fun-sized, and the only real chance for a decent paddle.
Rusty.
