The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Honestly, looking at the 16-day window for Tercera Ponte, it's a tough run. We've got a real flat spell to kick things off, and then a whole lot of nothing special to follow.
The first session worth paddling out for doesn't hit until Saturday the 22nd of August, and even then it's a struggle. We're looking at a weak 3 ft swell from the ESE, with a short period of 7 seconds. The energy is barely there, just 80 (weak). The morning has a light cross-offshore breeze which keeps things clean, but the waves are gutless and ordinary. It's a beginner-friendly size, but the quality is just not there. The water is a warm 79°, which is about average for this time of year. By Saturday afternoon, the wind swings onshore and it's game over.
From Sunday the 23rd right through to the end of the first week, it's a write-off. We get a few days with clean morning conditions, but the swell is tiny, weak, and the wind always seems to crap out by the afternoon. Tuesday the 25th afternoon sees a jump in period to 16 seconds, which is a long-period groundswell, but it's only 1 ft and cross-on. It's not doing anything for us.
Things finally get a little interesting on Friday the 28th of August. The morning session is the standout of the whole forecast. We've got a light cross-offshore breeze from the NE at 6 mph, making for clean conditions. The swell is small at 2 ft, but it's from the SSE with a long 14-second period, which gives it some shape and push. The combined energy is 302 (moderate), so there's some power behind it. The only problem? This break is inconsistent. The rating is a 3/5, so it's a beginner-friendly wave, but it won't be breaking all the time. It’s the best on offer, but it’s not a classic.
After that, we slide back into mediocrity. The mornings from the 29th of August through to the 1st of September stay clean with light offshores, and the swell hovers around 4 ft to 4 ft, but the period drops back to 7 or 8 seconds. It's surfable, but you'll be working for it. Afternoons are always ruined by strong cross-shore winds. From the 2nd of September onwards, the wind turns more onshore and the chop takes over completely. The swell gets a little bigger, hitting 5 ft on the 4th and 5th, but with the period stuck at 8 seconds and those onshore winds, it’s just a messy, choppy mess. The energy readings climb into the 400s (strong), but without clean wind, that power is wasted.
For beginners, anything over 5 ft is a bit much, so the end of the week might be a washout. For experts, there's nothing here that's going to get the heart racing. This setup, with the onshore winds and the beach break nature of the spot, looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for most of the period.
All in all, it's a lean forecast. The 28th of August morning is your one and only real shot. Keep your expectations low and your eyes on the horizon.
Rusty.
