The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Alex. Gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly a window of clean, rideable surf. The water is sittin’ at a warm 79°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The first real chance to paddle out doesn’t come until Wednesday morning, 22 July. That’s a 4-day gap from now with nothing worth mentioning. On Wednesday morning, the wind goes glassy, dead calm from the NNE at 3 mph. That’s a major positive. The swell is a weak 6 ft from the ESE, but with a short period of 8 seconds, it’s gonna lack punch. The combined energy is weak (389), so it’s not a standout by any means, but the glassy conditions will make it look better than it is. It’s a reef break, so a short period swell like this might not wrap in perfectly, but it’s the best we’ve got for a while.
Thursday morning, 23 July, offers a similar story – a cleaner cross-offshore breeze from the ENE at 3 mph, but the swell drops to 4 ft from the ESE. Still a short period, still weak energy (216). It’s surfable, but you’ll be working for it.
The only real standout in the whole outlook is the very end of the forecast. Lookin’ at Sunday morning, 2 August. The swell jumps up to 6 ft from the ESE, with the combined energy hitting a moderate 799. That’s the most juice we see in the whole period. The wind is light and variable from the ENE at 6 mph, so it’s a light cross-shore. It’s still a short period swell (8 seconds), so don’t expect long, grinding walls, but the size and energy make it the best bet. Keep in mind, this is a full 2 weeks away, so it’s promising but not a guarantee. The morning session is your only shot; the afternoon gets blown out by a strong cross-onshore wind.
For the rest of the days, it’s a mess. Onshore winds, chop, and generally poor conditions. The 6 ft swell on the 2nd is the biggest, but the rest of the time it’s 3 ft or less. The consistent cross-onshore winds and short period swell make most of the window look more appealing for a kite than a surfboard.
Rusty.
