The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's break down what's coming up for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, the outlook for Alex (Alex) is a long, drawn-out grind for most of the 16-day window. The water temp is sitting around 79°, which is pretty much average for this time of year, so no shocks there. The problem is the wind. We've got a persistent ESE breeze that keeps the place choppy and cross-onshore for days on end. The wave energy is low, mostly hanging around the 70-350 range, and the waves are small and short period. It's not looking good for a paddle.
We do get a few brief windows of hope. Friday morning the 21st sees the wind drop to absolute glass, with a 3ft swell from the ESE. The energy is low (131), but it's the only time the ocean goes flat calm. It's surfable, but nothing to write home about. Saturday morning the 22nd also cleans up with a light 6 mph north wind, giving us a 3ft swell from the ESE. Again, small and clean.
After that, the wind turns ugly again until we get a bit of a change on the 26th. Wednesday morning the 26th is interesting: a very long period 16-second SSE groundswell rolls in, but it's tiny at 2ft. The energy is moderate (246), and the wind is light and cross-shore. That long period will make for some beautifully shaped, walled-up waves at a reef break like Alex, but the size is the big letdown.
The real standout arrives on Tuesday morning, the 1st of September. We get a 6ft swell from the east with an 8-second period, and the wind is a cross-offshore from the NNE at 9 mph. The combined energy jumps to 608, which is strong. The conditions are expected to be very good, and it's a clean setup. This is the pick of the bunch. The swell size is pushing into intermediate territory, so it's a proper session for those who are comfortable. The few days after that drop back into small, wind-affected slop, so make the most of the 1st.
Rusty.
