The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s comin’ for the surf at Alex.
First thing – this is a proper week-plus grind. You’ve got a stretch from now (August 16th) all the way through to the morning of Thursday, August 21st that is just poor – onshore, messy, and not worth paddlin’ for. The water’s sitting at a warm 79°, which is about average for the time of year – nothing wild there.
That Thursday morning, the 21st, finally hands us a glimmer. Swell is a small 4 ft from the ESE with a short period of 8 seconds, and the wind goes glassy – offshore from the NNW at just 3 mph. Wave energy is weak (163), so you’re not gettin’ any punch, but it’ll be clean. Not a standout, just a breath of fresh air after the rubbish.
The real standout, the one you wanna circle, lands on Thursday morning, August 27th. The swell picks up to 4 ft from the SSE with a better period of 8 seconds – still not groundswell territory, but the energy climbs to a moderate 293. More importantly, the wind is a light NE cross-off at 6 mph, giving you clean faces. This is your best bet in the run. Expect good surf conditions. You’ll have a reef break working, exposed to the south, but with this swell direction it’s decently lined up. Crowds are possible here – "sometimes" busy – so get in early.
If you miss that, the next Monday morning, August 31st, also looks promising. Same setup – 4 ft from the ESE, period 8 seconds, clean with a light N cross-off at 6 mph, and energy at 249. Good surf conditions again, but it’s a week and a half out so treat it as a hopeful heads-up.
For the rest – Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th – you’ll see wind staying onshore or cross-onshore, swell pushing 5 ft to 5 ft but short period, and surf quality stays poor. Not your days. The last Tuesday, August 26th, has a clean morning but only 4 ft and weak energy (177), so it’s surfable but nothing to get worked up about.
All in all, the 27th is the pick – clean, moderate energy, and that cross-off wind. Everything else is a watch and wait.
Rusty.
