The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's take a look at the forecast for Alex. I gotta be straight with you – this 16-day window is a real struggle for clean surf. The charts are showing weak, short-period wind swell trying to mix with a few pulses of longer-period groundswell, but the wind just won't cooperate. There's a lot of cross-onshore and choppy conditions in the mix, and the overall energy is low to moderate for most of the run.
The first week or so is pretty much a write-off. From Sunday the 23rd through the end of August, we're looking at tiny, junky waves. The wind is mostly from the east, blowing right across the face, making it choppy and frustrating. We're talking knee-high stuff at best, with combined energy readings in the low double digits to around 200 – that's weak, anemic stuff. Not worth getting wet for.
There's a glimmer of hope on the horizon, but it's a long way out. The standout window looks like it could be the morning of Monday the 31st of August. The swell is still small, only 4ft from the ESE, but the wind is forecast to be a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the NE. That means clean, glassy conditions. The combined energy reading is 252, which is moderate, but the clean face will make the most of it. It's a classic case of small but clean being better than bigger but blown out.
Following that, a similar pattern shows up on the morning of Thursday, the 4th of September. Again, a small 5ft ESE swell, with a light NE cross-offshore wind making for clean conditions. The energy is similar at 256. This is another small window of opportunity.
The rest of the forecast is a mix of onshore winds and building chop. The swell does try to push a little bigger, hitting 5ft on the 3rd of September, but the wind is a fresh cross-shore, making it lumpy and messy. That's a no-go for a proper surf. For now, the best advice is to sit tight, watch the forecasts, and pencil in the morning of the 31st of August and the 4th of September. The water temp is about average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
Rusty.
