The Lowdown
Right then, grab a coffee and let’s have a look at what’s happening at Southerndown over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim outlook for this stretch. The entire 16-day window is a write-off for any decent paddle surfing. There’s just nothing that shakes out as a reasonable option. The water is sitting at a very unusual 69°F, which is 7°F warmer than it should be for this time of year – feels more like a Mediterranean dip than the Bristol Channel.
The first recommendation doesn't pop up until Sunday the 6th of September. Before that, it’s all tiny, weak swell and rubbish wind. You get pockets of glassy conditions, like Thursday the 27th of August afternoon with 0.7ft of short period SW swell (energy a weak 80), but the waves are just too small and weak to bother with. The rest of that first week is dominated by fresh cross-onshore winds blowing into tiny, messy waves. On Saturday the 29th of August, the swell pushes to 5ft from the WSW, but it’s combined with a fresh cross-shore gale and a period of only 7 seconds, creating lumpy, un-rideable conditions. The energy is moderate (220) but the quality is zero.
The only real stand-out, and I use the term loosely, is Sunday the 6th of September. The morning session looks the pick of a very bad bunch. You’ve got a 6ft swell rolling in from the WSW with moderate energy (467), and the wind is offshore from the NE at a gentle 9 mph. That’s clean. But the period is a short 8 seconds, so it’s not going to have any real push or shape. It’s still only for experienced surfers as it’s over 5ft, and it’s not exactly a classic. The afternoon on the same day drops to a 1/5 score with onshore wind messing it up.
Honestly, for a spot that’s fairly exposed to the SW, it’s just not delivering. A lot of these onshore and cross-shore winds with short-period chop make the setup look far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing for the majority of the window. After the 6th, it drops back to poor, tiny conditions again. A tough forecast for a local.
