Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Southerndown over the next couple of weeks. Gotta be straight with you – it’s a bit of a slow burner this time around.
The water is sitting at a very unusual 65°, which is a massive 7° warmer than what we’d normally expect for this time of year. That’s a real talking point for the first spot we look at.
Right now and for the whole of this week, we’re staring down the barrel of some pretty flat and messy conditions. The first proper surf recommendation doesn’t show up until Friday the 17th of July, and even then it’s pretty ordinary. That’s over a week of waiting with only the tiniest slop around – not worth paddling out for.
Things start to change on the morning of Friday the 17th. The swell bumps up a touch to 4ft from the WSW with a period of 9 seconds. The combined wave energy is moderate at (203). The wind is glassy from the north, so it’ll look clean on the surface. The call is "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions", and the score is low. Honestly, the swell is small and short-period, so don’t expect much push. The glassy morning window is a plus, but the wave quality just isn’t there.
The weekend stays small and windy, with the best of a bad bunch being the Saturday morning the 18th with a weak 4ft swell but messy cross-onshore winds. Not one to get excited about. You’re better off staying in bed.
The standout period doesn’t arrive until a full two weeks out. On Monday the 20th of July, things start cooking. The morning brings a solid 7ft swell from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds. Now, 7ft is getting up there – it’ll be too much for beginners. The combined wave energy is strong at (460). The wind is offshore from the ESE, keeping the conditions clean. That morning session is the one to circle on the calendar.
The day after, Tuesday the 21st of July, holds similar promise. The morning sees a 6ft swell from the WSW, period of 8 seconds, with a combined energy of (414). Again, clean conditions with an offshore SE breeze. This is a great window for intermediate to experienced surfers.
Keep in mind, these long-range standouts for the 20th and 21st of July look promising but are less certain this far out. For now, the best on offer is the morning of Monday the 20th of July at Southerndown. It’ll be solid, clean, and punchy – just watch out for the crowds as they can show up sometimes.
Rusty.
