Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, I’m gonna level with ya – it’s flat out grim for the foreseeable future here at Southerndown. This stretch of coast is lookin’ at a real dry spell with basically no surf to speak of for the next couple of weeks at least. The water’s sittin’ at a balmy 65°F which is much warmer than normal for this time of year, almost 7°F above average – that’s real unusual, feels more like a summer bathtub than a wetsuit session, but with these tiny leftovers it’s just a tease.
Tuesday morning, 7th July, you’ve got a limp little 1.0 ft push from the WSW, period around 9 seconds, combined energy barely registering a 22 – that’s weak as dishwater. Wind’s from the west at 9 mph, cross-on, so it’s bumpy and choppy. Poor surf all the way. Wednesday brightens up with a glassy moment first thing when the wind drops to 3 mph and straight offshore, but at 1.0 ft and 8 second period there’s just no power to work with. Thursday morning, 9th July, it’s glassy again – offshore and clean – but still only 1.0 ft. You’d be tempted but it’s barely gonna peel.
There is one tiny glimmer on Friday, 10th July. That morning we get a bit of cross-off breeze from the east at 9 mph, swell nudges up to 1 ft from the WSW, period 9 seconds, and the energy climbs to a still-modest 27. It’s clean. Then Friday afternoon looks even better: the wind drops to 3 mph and turns glassy, with 1 ft swell – a similar 26 energy. That’s the best we’ll see – clean little thigh-high sliders for the longboard or a fun fish if you’re desperate. Not a standout by any stretch, but the pick of a bad bunch.
After that, it’s a long, painful slide. From Saturday 11th right through to Wednesday 22nd July, swell heights plummet to 0.3 ft or 0.7 ft, energy drops to single digits or low teens – 1, 1, 1, 7, 4, you name it. The wind’s mostly clean cross-off from the east but gusty and strong, hitting 22 to 25 mph on the 12th, 13th, and 14th. With those tiny waves and that much breeze, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. Even when we get a glassy moment on the 18th afternoon with 0.7 ft and a 7 second period, there’s just no swell to work with.
Bottom line: there are no good surf options in this 16-day window. Southerndown’s a fairly consistent little beginner-friendly spot normally, so this flat run is a proper letdown. But stay optimistic – it tends not to stay poor for long around here, and forecasts can change. For now, keep the board in the car and the wax in the cupboard.
