The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer around Southerndown. I gotta be straight with you, the next couple of weeks are looking pretty grim for a paddle. The overall pattern is tiny, weak swell and a lot of onshore wind, so we’re in for a real flat spell around here.
We start off the outlook on Sunday the 19th of July, and honestly, there’s nothing to get excited about. We’re looking at a tiny 0.3ft swell from the west with a weak 1 unit of energy. The wind is a cross-on from the west at 6 mph, and the water is a very unusual 69°, which is a whopping 9° warmer than normal for this time of year. The surf is just poor.
This flat, poor-quality pattern hangs around for a long stretch. Through Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, the swell stays at a pathetic 0.3ft with energy barely registering. The wind is mostly light, but there’s just no swell to work with. On Wednesday the 22nd of July, we get a glassy morning, but with zero wave height, it’s just a calm, flat ocean.
The only real pulse of energy shows up nearly a week and a half away, on Tuesday the 28th of July. A 4ft swell from the west at 7 seconds pops up, with moderate energy of 149 units. That’s the biggest swell of the whole forecast. But, and it’s a big but, the wind is howling from the WNW at 16 mph as a cross-shore, and then on the afternoon it gets even worse with a 25 mph cross-on. That’s going to be a messy, lumpy, and blown-out day. For a beginner-friendly break like Southerndown, 4ft is getting a bit big, and with that wind, it’s really only going to interest the kite surfers, not the paddle crew.
After that, the swell drops back down again. We get a tiny bit of hope on the morning of Thursday the 30th of July, with a clean, cross-off wind from the NNW at 9 mph, but the swell is only 1ft from the WSW. It’s clean, but there’s no power to ride.
The very end of the outlook, on Sunday the 2nd of August and Monday the 3rd of August, sees a slight bump in swell to 2ft and 2ft with energy around 40-57 units. The wind is light and cross-on, so the surf will be small, soft, and a little choppy. It’s still not good.
There are no standouts in this window. It’s a long, flat, poor run. Southerndown is fairly consistent, but it tends not to stay this poor for long, so forecasts can change. For now, save your energy.
