The Lowdown
Alright, let me level with you. The full 16-day outlook for Southerndown is a tough one. The swell is barely there, and the wind is mostly onshore, ruining what little surf we get. The water is a balmy 70°, which is about 8° warmer than normal for this time of year – that’s a real anomaly, so the warm water is a nice bonus.
The first few days are a bust. Wednesday the 19th is all lumpy, cross-onshore wind with tiny, weak 2ft waves from the WSW, with a combined energy of just 48. Thursday is the same story – poor quality, small surf.
Friday morning the 21st has a moment of glassy calm, but the waves are a miniscule 2ft, and the energy is a flat 37. Saturday the 22nd looks clean in the morning with a light offshore, but the swell is only 1ft.
From Sunday the 23rd right through the end of the month, it’s essentially flat. There are clean days, like Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th, but the swell is only 0.3ft to 0.7ft. It’s just a complete blank.
The only period with any real size comes on Monday the 31st of August. The morning shows a 5ft swell from the west, with a moderate combined energy of 394, building to 5ft in the afternoon, with energy up to 489. The problem is the wind is a fresh cross-shore, turning into a fresh cross-onshore, which will make it a lumpy, bumpy mess. It’s the only sizeable window, but it’s not clean. This is for experienced surfers only, as the 5ft waves are too big for beginners.
There’s no standout session here. The whole forecast is grim for paddle surfing. On the days with stronger cross-onshore wind and a bit of swell, like the 31st of August, it might be more interesting for a kite.
