The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this look at Southerndown is a tough one. We’re staring down a long, dry spell with barely a ripple to get excited about for the next couple of weeks. The water is sitting at 68° – that’s a whopping 8° above normal for this time of year, which is seriously unusual, almost like a warm bath. But warm water doesn’t mean waves, and we’ve got a whole lot of nothing on the horizon.
Kicking off on Friday the 17th of July, we see a tiny 0.7ft swell from the west with a weak energy reading of just (7). The morning is glassy and clean, but the waves are basically non-existent. By the afternoon, the wind swings to a cross-on shore and the swell drops further. Not a single decent wave in sight.
The pattern just repeats. Saturday the 18th, Sunday the 19th, Monday the 20th – all the same story. Small, weak west swell, rarely reaching 0.3ft to 1ft, and the energy never cracks double digits. The wind is all over the place, sometimes clean, but the swell simply isn’t there. The period is often short, under 8 seconds, so even if there was height, it’d be weak and mushy.
We go through an entire week – through the 21st, 22nd, 23rd, 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th – and it’s the same grim picture. Every single forecast window is marked “poor surf conditions.” The largest swell we see in this whole stretch is a 1ft from the west-northwest on the 18th afternoon, but it’s cross-on and choppy. There’s a brief moment on the morning of the 30th of July where a clean ESE wind meets a 1.0ft southwest swell, but it’s still tiny. The energy is only (15) – weak to moderate at best.
For the first week of August, it’s more of the same. The 1st of August shows nothing but 0.3ft west swell and 16 mph cross-on winds. The combined energy is a pathetic (1). There is simply no surf to recommend.
Given the consistent lack of height and energy, there is no standout session. The best we can say is for a surfer who is desperate, the morning of Thursday the 30th of July offers the cleanest conditions with a tiny 1.0ft southwest swell and glassy winds. But expect knee-high slop at best. This is a blank run, and for Southerndown, it’s a normal part of a summer lull.
Stay patient, it tends not to stay this poor forever. Rusty out.
