Table - best surf conditions forecast for Southerndown over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, it’s Rusty here. Let’s be honest with you straight up: the next couple of weeks at Southerndown look proper grim. There’s not a single decent wave recommendation in the entire 16-day run. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with nothing but tiny, weak leftovers.
The first week is a total write-off. From Thursday the 9th right through to the end of the week, we’re talking knee-high dribble at best. The swell is just a whisper, with combined energy readings barely breaking double digits – we’re looking at a feeble 19 (km/h) on Thursday morning, dropping to a pathetic 2 (km/h) by Sunday. The wind is mostly cross-off or glassy, which would be a dream if there was any swell to ride, but with heights of 0.6 ft to 1 ft, it’s just not worth paddling out. Even the glassy conditions on Saturday afternoon can’t save a wave that’s barely a ripple.
The second week is more of the same story. From Monday the 14th right through to Thursday the 24th, the swell doesn’t show any signs of life. We get a few tiny pulses of long-period energy from the SW, with periods hitting 18-19 seconds, but the height is stuck at 0.3 ft to 0.6 ft. That long period groundswell is just going to roll straight through with no push. The combined energy remains in the low single digits or teens – a measly 16 (km/h) on some days. The wind gets messy on the 15th with a risk of thunderstorms, and by the 22nd we’ve got fresh cross-onshore winds making it choppy on top of the non-existent waves.
The only slight glimmer of hope is on Friday the 24th morning, where the swell bumps up to 3 ft from the west with a period of 5 seconds. The combined energy finally hits 48 (km/h), which is still weak but at least a step up from the 0.3 ft stuff. The wind is light and cross-onshore. But let’s be real – that’s a short-period, wind-affected mess, and it’s still rated as poor surf conditions. It’s not worth the drive.
For a beginner break like Southerndown, these long blank runs can happen. It just tends to stay flat for a while. The only silver lining is that with absolutely no swell, the crowds will be non-existent.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the charts, and hope something changes. This is a tough one to swallow.
Rusty.
