The Lowdown
Alright folks, this is Rusty, and let me walk you through what’s happening at Southerndown over the next couple of weeks. It’s gonna be a tough watch for the most part.
For a solid week, from today the 18th, all the way through to the 25th, the surf is flat to near-flat. We’re looking at waves mostly under 3 ft, blown out by cross-onshore winds. The combined energy is weak to moderate at best (reading between 51 and 135), but with that wind, it’s just messy, lumpy junk. There’s a clean moment on Friday the 21st morning with a light offshore breeze from the ENE, but the swell is only 2 ft—hardly worth the wetsuit. The water is running at 69°, which is a massive 8° warmer than usual for this time of year. That’s really unusual, almost feels like a warm bath, but there’s just nothing to ride.
The only day that catches my eye is Tuesday the 25th. We finally get a pulse of swell hitting 6 ft from the SW with a 9-second period. The wind shifts cross-offshore from the ESE, and the combined energy pumps up to 755 (strong wave energy). That’s the standout number in this whole outlook. It’ll be the biggest and cleanest we’ve seen, but at 6 ft, it’s too big for beginners at this exposed spot. For the experienced crew, it’s your only real chance to get a wave. After that, it’s back to tiny, choppy dribble right through to the start of September, with energy barely reaching 100 and wind switching back to onshore or cross-onshore. We get a couple of glassy moments on the 23rd morning and the 28th afternoon, but the swell is a pathetic 0.5 ft to 2 ft. Flat.
So, bottom line: if you’re desperate, hit the morning of Tuesday the 25th. Otherwise, give it a miss. The board can wait.
Rusty.
