Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what Southerndown has cookin' for us over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, I gotta level with you. It's a pretty grim stretch ahead for Southerndown. We’re looking at a long, long run of days where the waves just aren't cooperating. The first glimmer of anything half-decent doesn't show up until the second week, and even then, it's not gonna set the world on fire. From now until about July 13th, you're battling poor surf conditions, mostly with a messy cross-onshore wind that's just chopping everything up. There's a bit of energy around on the 2nd, with a combined swell energy of (151), but it's a cross-shore mess with 4ft of swell. Not worth paddling out for.
We do have a standout, but it's a distant one. Keep your eyes on Monday, July 13th. During the afternoon, we get a little window of opportunity. The wind goes glassy, and we see a pulse of 1ft swell out of the WSW. The period jumps to 13 seconds, so that's a proper groundswell. The combined energy is still low (76), and it's just surfable, but glassy conditions with any period that long are hard to ignore. This is a point-break sort of swell, long and drawn out, so expect long waits between very ordinary-shaped sets. The water temperature is a whopping 64°F at the start of the run, a massive 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year. It's swimming-pool warm, which is very unusual for July.
Then, into Tuesday morning the 14th, we get another chance. Clean conditions with a light offshore ESE breeze and a 2ft, 11-second WSW swell. Again, the combined energy is low (78), but clean surf is clean surf. Still, it's beginner-sized stuff, nothing to get excited about. The rest of the run stays tiny with clean but weak cross-off winds, offering nothing of substance.
So there you have it. A long, dry spell followed by a couple of very small, clean days in the second week. If you're a real frother and just need to get wet, the 13th or 14th might give you a few. But otherwise, it's a waiting game.
Rusty.
