The Lowdown
Alright crew, Rusty here. Let's get into the outlook for the next couple of weeks.
I'm not gonna sugarcoat it – it's a grim forecast. We're looking at a long, dry spell with almost nothing to surf for the entire 16-day period. From now until the end of August, the surf is completely flat. There's a pulse of energy around the 30th of August and into the 1st of September that brings some size, but it's all but ruined by strong winds. The only break in the game is Southerndown, a beginner-friendly spot that's fairly consistent and faces southwest. The water temp is about 69°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, a huge anomaly of about 8°.
The first tiny bit of hope shows up on the morning of Sunday, August 30th. The swell pushes to about 4ft from the WSW, with a period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is moderate at 287. But the wind is onshore from the SW, making it a marginal, messy prospect.
The only real window where there's some size is early on Monday, August 31st. The morning shows a 5ft swell from the west, with an 8-second period. The combined energy hits 607, which is a solid moderate to strong reading. That's the biggest energy we see all forecast. But here's the kicker: the wind is onshore from the SW, so the waves are going to be blown out and choppy. It's a real heartbreaker because that size has some grunt, but the wind is going to destroy the shape. For a beginner spot like Southerndown, 5ft is big, and with poor conditions, it's a no-go.
The morning of Tuesday, September 1st, is a similar story. A 5ft west swell with 8 seconds, and energy of 489, is a decent amount of water moving. But, again, onshore SW wind. The setup is just a big, messy, onshore wind-swell. Honestly, for those days with a bit of size and that onshore wind, this looks more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer. After that, it drops right back off into the flatness again.
So, bottom line, there's no standout session here. The best you can hope for is a blown-out, choppy 4-5ft wave in the first few days of September, but it's not a day to get excited about. The first week and a half is a total zero, and the window that follows is too wind-affected to be any good. It's a tough one to swallow.
Rusty.
