Table - best surf conditions forecast for Southerndown over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. I’ve had a good look at what’s on the cards for Southerndown over the next couple of weeks, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s not looking pretty. This is a proper flat spell we’re staring down.
Right from the start, we’ve got nothing doing. The first chance of even thinking about a paddle is from Wednesday the 8th of July, but it’s heartbreakingly small. We’re looking at a tiny 1 ft swell from the WSW with a short period of 8 seconds. The combined energy is barely a whisper at 14. Wednesday morning is glassy though, so if you’re a complete beginner wanting to just sit on a board and feel nothing, it’s clean. But by the afternoon, that west wind picks up to 9 mph and goes cross-onshore, making it choppy. Not good.
Thursday the 9th is more of the same – 1 ft in the morning, glassy, but again tiny. Afternoon goes messy with a cross-onshore breeze. Friday the 10th offers the best of a bad lot for the first week. Morning sees a light cross-offshore breeze with 1 ft swell and a clean face, and the afternoon goes glassy again. The swell energy is still weak at 28 and 26, but if you have a foamie and zero expectations, it’s the cleanest window you’ll get.
From there, it’s a long, slow decline into nothing. Saturday the 11th has 0.7 ft to 1 ft, and by Sunday the 12th we’re down to 0.3 ft with howling 22 mph cross-offshore winds. The rest of the week is a write-off. The swell drops to flat or near-flat with energy readings of 1, 2, and even 0. There’s a brief blip on the 13th of July where a 0.3 ft swell shows up with a very long period of 19 seconds from the SW, but that’s not going to wrap in with any power at all.
The second week is just as bleak. We see bits of energy return, but never anything over 2 ft, and it’s constantly battling strong winds from the east and then shifting westerly. The setup is so poor and the wind so dominant, this whole period looks far more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. The combined energy stays firmly in the weak two-digit range for the entire 16 days. To be honest, there’s not a single standout session here. If you absolutely have to get wet, aim for the glassy morning of Friday the 10th of July. Otherwise, save your energy.
Rusty.
