The Lowdown
Right, folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer for Sandsend Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it's a pretty bleak picture to start. The first few days are a write-off, with poor surf conditions and a lot of wind. We're looking at a gap of nearly a fortnight before anything even worth mentioning pops up.
Friday the 17th and Saturday the 18th are just a mess of onshore and cross-off winds, with the swell energy sitting at a weak 10 (moderate energy) rising to 356 (moderate energy). The water temp is about 59°, which is pretty normal for this time of year, so at least you won't be shivering for nothing.
Sunday the 19th sees a bit of a jump in size, but it's still not great. The morning brings a 8ft NNE swell, but it's coming in with a moderate breeze and only a marginal surf forecast. The combined energy is a strong 1011 (strong to very strong wave energy). The period is 10 seconds, so there's some push, but it's not exactly clean.
The whole of the following week is a write-off. Tiny waves, if any, and messy conditions. You're looking at a long, dry spell until Saturday the 1st of August.
Now, that Saturday morning, the 1st of August, is the only thing that even gets a sniff of a recommendation. The wind will be glassy from the SSW, which is a huge positive. The swell is a small 4ft from the north, with a period of just 7 seconds – short period wind swell, so it'll be a bit weak and messy. The combined energy is a modest 111 (moderate wave energy). It's described as "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions", so don't expect any magic. It's surfable, but it's not going to set the world on fire. The afternoon turns onshore and poor again, so if you're going to paddle out, you'll want to be in the water first thing.
It's a tough forecast, lads. Not much to get excited about at all. This is one of those times where you just have to wait and hope the forecasts change.
Rusty.
