The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s going on up the coast at Sandsend Bay. Gotta be straight with you – the outlook for the next 16 days is a bit of a flat spell. The first real surfable recommendation doesn't pop up until the weekend of the 18th, so we’re looking at a quiet start to the week. After that, the window is short, and it gets very small again.
The first hint of something worthwhile comes on Saturday, 18th July. We’ll see a 5ft swell from the NNE pushing in. The wave energy is building through the day, with moderate energy readings (232 on the morning, up to 276 in the afternoon). Winds are cross-offshore from the NNW and N, which will keep things tidy. That’s clean, but not exactly mind-blowing. The water temp is sitting at 59°, which is about 2° warmer than normal for this time of year – a nice little bonus for a summer session.
The standout, and the only real highlight in this whole run, is Sunday morning, 19th July. The swell jumps to 7ft from the NNE, with a period of 9 seconds. That’s a solid groundswell, and the energy really kicks in with a strong reading of 608. The wind is cross-off from the NNW at 15 mph, keeping the surface clean. Now, 7ft is getting into the zone where it’s a bit much for beginners, but for the intermediate crew, this is the best shot on offer. The only downside is that it’s a bit of a short-lived peak; the afternoon sees the swell holding at 7ft, but the wind swings more cross, and the energy is still high (721), but the conditions get a touch more mixed.
Sunday 19th morning is the pick. It’s a clean, punchy NNE swell, and despite the crowds being "often" at Sandsend Bay, that’s the kind of day you paddle out for. The break is fairly consistent and fairly exposed to the swell, so it’ll handle that size well.
After that, it drops off quickly. Monday the 20th sees a 4ft morning but it’s only ordinary, and by Tuesday we’re back to tiny, weak energy. The rest of the run is a long period of flatness or onshore junk. The second week into late July is a write-off for any decent surf. There’s a glassy morning on the 28th, but the swell is barely 2ft from the ESE – that’s a knee-high dribble. Not worth getting excited about.
So, if you’re keen, your best bet is to target Sunday morning, 19th July. That’s your window. It goes solid, it’s clean, and the water’s a touch warmer than usual. After that, it’s time to find another hobby or just enjoy the beach.
Rusty.
