The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on the table for the Sandsend Bay area over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I'll be honest with you – it’s a pretty grim start. The water temp is sitting at a fairly average 61°F for this time of year, but the surf is just not there. We’ve got a long wait ahead. The first real chance of anything rideable doesn't show up until Saturday the 22nd – that's a solid gap of nearly three days with nothing worth paddling out for.
Come Saturday morning, the 22nd of August, we finally see a glimmer of hope. The swell picks up to a clean 6 ft, pushing in from the NNE. The wind is light and cross-offshore out of the NNW, which is a dream for clean conditions. The combined wave energy is a moderate 412, so there’s some decent push behind it. This is looking like the standout window of the whole period. It’s not massive, but it’s clean, and for a break that’s fairly consistent and fairly exposed, this is the one to circle.
Saturday afternoon is a bit of a letdown – the wind swings onshore out of the ENE, making things tricky. Sunday morning still holds some clean 4 ft waves from the NNE with a light NW cross-off, but it’s just ordinary, not special.
Then we hit a dry spell again. From Sunday afternoon right through the rest of the week and into the following week, the surf is mostly poor. The swell drops off, the wind is messy, and the energy is low. There’s a little blip on Thursday the 27th morning with a clean 5 ft east swell and a light SSW cross-off, giving it a moderate energy of 277, but it’s just a one-off morning before it fades.
The final week is more of the same – small, weak, and unappealing. The 29th of August has a glassy afternoon with a tiny 3 ft north swell, but it’s barely enough to get excited about. The 30th offers some ordinary 3 ft waves from the ENE, but it’s just surfable, nothing more.
So, if you’re looking for the best bet, make it Saturday morning, the 22nd. That’s your window. After that, keep your expectations low, or check back because forecasts can change.
Rusty.
