The Lowdown
Right then, let’s have a look at what’s on offer around Sandsend Bay. We’ve got a bit of a quiet spell ahead, so don’t go getting your hopes up too high just yet.
The water’s sitting at 59°F, which is pretty much what you’d expect for this time of year, so no surprises there.
The standout – and really the only proper shout – is Sunday the 19th. We’ve got a solid NNE swell pushing in at 8ft, with a period of 9 seconds. The energy is sitting at 885 (moderate), which is enough to get the blood pumping. The wind is a cross-off from the NNW at 19 mph, which will keep things relatively clean, though it’s a bit of a handful. This is proper intermediate territory, and with the crowds often around, you’ll want to be on your game. It won’t be a beginner’s session, that’s for sure.
The swell drops off fast after that. Monday the 20th sees it down to 4ft, with a cross-shore wind and a score of 0, so it’s best to give it a miss. The rest of the week is pretty flat, with tiny waves and poor conditions. There’s a stretch from Tuesday the 21st right through to the end of the month where the surf is just not worth paddling out for.
We do see a tiny pulse of life on Monday the 27th, with a 4ft swell from the NNW, but it’s a short-period 6 seconds and the energy is only 181 (weak). It’s surfable, but very ordinary. After that, it’s back to near-nothing for the rest of the run.
The very end of the forecast, on Sunday the 2nd of August, sees a little more energy with a 3ft NNE swell and a period of 10 seconds, giving us 120 (weak). The wind is offshore at 25 mph, which is strong and clean but makes paddling into anything a real fight. Not exactly a highlight.
So, to be straight with you, Sunday the 19th is your best bet. The rest of the 16 days is a long, flat gap with only a few tiny, unremarkable pulses. It’s a quiet period for Sandsend Bay.
