The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's coming up for our stretch of coast. Gotta be straight with you from the start: this 16-day window is looking pretty bleak, I won't sugar-coat it. We've got a solid run of poor conditions and not much swell to get excited about. We're talking a big gap with nothing worthwhile. There's a little pulse of energy towards the end of the first week, but even then, it's a marginal call. For the most part, you might be better off cleaning the wax off your board and waiting for the next system.
The main break on offer is Sandsend Bay. It's a fairly consistent spot, exposed to the north-northeast, so it needs that direction to work. Water temps are running about 1.0° warmer than average for this time of year, coming in at 59°, so it's a little on the mild side.
Looking at the week ahead, the early days are a write-off. Thursday the 16th through Monday the 21st are all marked as poor. Small, weak swell and a mix of cross or onshore winds. The combined energy figures are tiny, mostly under 100, which is just pathetic. Things finally change a bit on Saturday the 19th. The morning sees a jump in swell height to 7ft from the NNE, with a period of 9 seconds, and the combined energy shoots up to 849 – that's a moderate energy, finally. The wind is a cross-off from the NNW at 16 mph, which should keep things clean. It's still considered marginal surf though, and at 7ft, it's getting a bit big for beginners. The afternoon cleans up with lighter NNE winds at 6 mph, looking glassy. This is probably the best chance you'll get all week, but it’s a real one-day wonder. Expect crowds to be an issue as everyone tries to get a piece.
After that pulse, it drops right off again. Monday the 20th through the rest of the period is back to small, weak, and poor. We're looking at a long dry spell. There's a little bump of 4ft on Sunday the 26th with light NW winds, but the conditions are described as very ordinary. By the 27th we see a brief moment of glassy conditions with a light westerly wind, but the swell is only 1ft. Through the end of July and into the start of August it's just more of the same nothingness.
So, the standout here, if you can even call it that, is the Saturday 19th into Sunday 20th window. The morning of the 19th has the most size and decent wind, and the afternoon cleans right up. It's not perfect, but it's the only real swell on the cards. For the rest, it’s a long stretch of flat, choppy, or onshore junk. Hang in there.
Rusty.
