The Lowdown
Right, gather round. Rusty here. Let's have a look at this stretch of coast.
Alright, so the outlook for Sandsend Bay is a bit of a slow burner. For the next couple of weeks, we’re looking at a lot of flat, weak, and messy conditions. The water is sitting at 62°, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, so that’s a small win if you’re just having a paddle.
The first real chance of anything decent doesn’t kick off until Saturday, the 5th of September. That’s a long wait, about a week and a half of small, mostly onshore junk. From the 21st of August right through to the end of the month, the wave energy is weak, barely breaking triple digits in the combined swell energy (320). The swell is short-period stuff (8 seconds), so it’ll be weak and crumbly. The wind is all over the place, mostly cross or onshore, making it choppy. There are a couple of mornings, like the 22nd and 26th, where the wind goes light cross-off, but the swell is just too small – around 4 ft to 3 ft – to get excited about.
Then we get to the 3rd of September. Now we’re talking. Thursday afternoon sees a big pulse of north-easterly swell hitting 10 ft combined with a fresh offshore wind. That’s a massive jump in energy (930)! But look, at 10 ft, this is for experts only. The period is still short (7 seconds), and with that much size and a short period, it’s going to be a washing machine out there. The offshore wind will keep it clean, but it’s a wild beast.
The standout, and the one I’d be eyeing, is the Saturday morning session on the 5th of September. This is the best of the lot. We’ve got a solid 7 ft swell from the north-northeast, which is bang on that optimum direction (NNE), and it’s packing some decent energy (736). The period has stretched out to 9 seconds, so it’ll have a bit more shape than the earlier stuff. And the wind is light offshore from the west. That means clean, lined-up waves. This is the one to target. It’s still a big swell, so know your limits, but the quality is there. The crowds? Given it’s Sandsend Bay and it’s a fairly consistent spot, you can expect company.
The afternoon of the 5th looks okay, but the wind swings cross-shore, so the morning window is your golden ticket.
Stay safe out there.
Rusty.
