The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, and I’m taking a look at what’s on offer for Sandsend Bay over the next couple weeks.
I’ll level with you – it’s not looking pretty. This is going to be a quiet, frustrating stretch with hardly anything worth getting wet for.
Water temp is sitting right around 61°F right now, which is about a degree and a half warmer than usual for this time of year. Feels like a warm bath, but you won’t be in long with this surf.
We start out on Sunday, August 23rd, and it’s a dead zone through the end of the month. The swell is tiny – mostly under 3 feet – with short periods and weak energy. The wind is onshore or cross-on almost every day, making a mess of the little bumps that do show up. On Sunday the 23rd, we get a 4-foot swell with an 8-second period, but that cross-on wind from the north-northeast just chops it up. The energy reads at 176, but the quality is terrible.
Things get worse. By Monday the 24th, the energy drops to 57, and it’s just dribble. Nothing to ride.
The wind finally turns offshore on Friday the 28th, blowing a clean 22 mph from the west. The problem is the swell is only 2 feet with 7 seconds. It’s clean as a whistle, but there’s no push. Not worth the walk down the beach.
There’s one day that stands out: Tuesday, September 1st. In the morning, we see the best surf of this whole stretch. A 4-foot north swell with a 9-second period, combined energy up to 281 – the only solid energy we see. The wind is a light 6 mph from the northwest, which is cross-offshore, keeping things clean. This is your moment. The break is fairly consistent, and that clean, light wind is a major positive. You’ll get some rideable waves.
But it doesn’t last. By Tuesday afternoon the wind shifts cross-shore, and Wednesday morning the 2nd we’re back to 3-foot slop. The rest of the outlook into early September is the same story: tiny swell, weak energy, flat conditions. By Saturday, September 5th, we’re down to 1 foot and 13 energy – that’s flat.
So here’s the bottom line: a long, frustrating run of poor surf, with one brief window on Tuesday the 1st of September. If you’re local and itching, you might get a few clean rides that morning. Otherwise, save the energy.
Rusty.
