Table - best surf conditions forecast for Sandsend Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Sandsend Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the first week is a bit of a write-off. We’re looking at a long stretch of poor surf and messy conditions. From Thursday the 9th right through to the 16th, the swell is tiny, often under 2 ft, and the wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, chopping things up. The energy is weak, barely cracking 20 to 40 (21-72) for most of that time. It’s just not worth paddling out for. The water temp is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
Things start to get interesting around Friday the 17th. The swell picks up to 5 ft to 6 ft from the NNE, but it’s still a short-period windswell at 6 seconds, and the wave comment is still “poor surf conditions”. The NNW wind is cross-offshore though, so that’s a positive. The energy is starting to build (170-222).
Now, the standout window is Saturday, July 18th. This is the only one worth getting excited about. We’ve got a solid 8 ft swell from the NNE on Saturday morning, dropping to 8 ft in the afternoon. The period stretches to 9 seconds, which is much better, and the energy is strong (888-791). The wind is cross-offshore from the NNW, keeping things clean. For a fairly exposed beach break, that’s a good setup. The wave comment even says “marginal surf forecast or questionable tide conditions” – so it’s not a total slam dunk, but it’s the best we’ve got. This is for intermediate to advanced surfers; 8 ft is a bit much for beginners. The break is Sandsend Bay, and it’s fairly consistent. Crowds are possible here, so expect a few others around if you go.
Sunday the 19th drops back down to 5 ft, but the wind swings onshore again, so the window closes quickly. The rest of the week after that is back to small, weak, and mostly blown out, with fresh breezes making it tough going.
So, if you’re holding out for something, mark your calendar for Saturday the 18th. It’s not perfect, but it’s the only real chance of a decent wave in the next 16 days.
Rusty.
