Table - best surf conditions forecast for Sandsend Bay over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s coming up for Sandsend Bay over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – the next week or so is a write-off. Honestly, from Friday the 10th through to at least Thursday the 16th, the surf is just poor. Tiny waves, messy wind, and nowhere near enough energy to get excited about. You’re looking at flat, weak, and choppy conditions day after day. It’s a real flat spell, so don’t bother paddling out unless you just want to sit on a board and float.
Things start to shift around Friday the 17th. The wind finally turns offshore, coming from the NNW, and the waves start to show a bit of life. A clean 2ft to 3ft swell from the NE pushes through, but it’s still small and weak – the energy only sits around 40-47 (weak). Not worth a proper session yet, but at least it’s not choppy.
Now, Saturday the 18th is where it gets interesting. The swell jumps up to 6ft from the NE, and the wind stays clean and offshore from the NNW. The combined energy is a solid 305 (moderate). This is the first real chance for a wave, but at 6ft, it’s on the edge – intermediate surfers will be fine but beginners might find it a bit much. The period is only 7 seconds, so it’s a bit of a windswell, not the cleanest, but it's rideable and clean.
The standout window, and the one to circle on your calendar, is Sunday the 19th through Tuesday the 21st.
Sunday morning the 19th is looking promising. Clean offshore wind from the NNW, 6ft swell from the NNE, period 7 seconds, and the energy jumps to 379 (moderate). The wave comment says “expect good surf conditions,” and I agree. It’s solid, clean, and the beach should have some fun walls. Not for beginners though – 6ft is pushing it for the less experienced.
Monday the 20th gets bigger. The swell hits 10ft from the NNE with a 9-second period, and the energy is a massive 1347 (strong). That’s a lot of power. The wind is still offshore or cross-off from the NNW and N. This is expert territory only. The wave comment says “marginal” for conditions, but given the size and clean wind, it’s more about the crowd and the difficulty. If you’re an experienced surfer and you’re confident, Monday morning could be the best of the whole run – but it’s big, and it’s heavy.
The real standout, in my opinion, is Tuesday the 21st. The morning is clear, wind is light offshore from the NNW at 15 km/h, and the swell is 8ft from the NNE with a 9-second period and a combined energy of 1492 (strong). The wave comment says “excellent surf conditions for experienced surfers” – and that’s the call. That’s a proper groundswell, clean, powerful, and with enough period to hold shape. It’s a touch big for intermediates, but for experts, this is the one. The afternoon fades a bit as the wind turns cross-on, but the morning session is the pick of the whole forecast.
After Tuesday, the surf drops off quickly. Wednesday the 22nd has a small 3ft glassy morning, but it’s weak and ordinary. From Thursday the 23rd through to Saturday the 25th, it’s back to flat, tiny, and barely worth a mention.
So, to sum it up: the first week is a dud. The second week delivers. Saturday the 18th is the warm-up, Sunday the 19th is solid fun, and Tuesday the 21st morning is the best on offer – big, clean, and powerful. Get on it if you can handle it.
Rusty.
