The Lowdown
Right then, let's have a look at what's on the table for Sandsend Bay over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, it's a pretty quiet stretch. The first few days are a write-off. Thursday afternoon (20th August) we've got a weak 5ft northerly windswell, but it's messy with a 30 km/h north cross-shore and lumpy cross-chop. That's a no-go.
Friday the 21st picks up a bit. The morning sees a 6ft north swell, a bit of size, and the wind is a cross-offshore from the NNW at 35 km/h, which keeps things clean. The combined energy is moderate (330). The swell period is a short 7 seconds though, so it's a bit gutless. Still, it's the best looking session of the whole run. The afternoon gets bigger to 7ft but the cross-shore wind craps it up with lumpy cross-chop. That's a bit too much size for beginners anyway, and the conditions won't be pretty.
Saturday morning (22nd) is another decent shout. A 6ft swell from the NNE, cross-off wind from the NNW at 25 km/h, and clean conditions. The energy is moderate (448). The swell period is still short at 8 seconds, so it's not a proper groundswell, but it's rideable. The afternoon drops to 6ft with a lighter cross-shore, but it gets a bit of cross-chop.
Sunday the 23rd, the morning has a 4ft NNE swell, light WNW wind, and clean conditions. Energy is low (221). It's small, but it's a surfable wave if you're desperate. The afternoon turns onshore from the ENE and kills it.
From Sunday afternoon onward, things flatline. The swell drops, the wind goes onshore, and it's all poor. There's a gap from the 23rd afternoon all the way through to the 27th August morning. That's a solid four-day stretch with nothing worthwhile.
The 27th morning brings a brief flicker of life: 4ft from the ENE with a light cross-offshore wind from the WNW and clean conditions. But the energy is weak (116) and the period is a short 6 seconds. It's ordinary.
After that, it's back to tiny, weak, and poor until the 1st of September. That morning has a 0.7ft north swell with a 35 km/h cross-offshore, but it's a joke. The 2nd of September morning has a 3ft ENE swell, but again, tiny and weak.
Honestly, if you're looking for a paddle, the clear pick of the entire 16-day window is Friday morning, 21st August. It's not a standout, but it's the only window with a bit of size and clean conditions. The 6ft north swell at Sandsend Bay with those cross-off winds will be the most surfable. The water is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, sitting at 17°C.
The rest of the fortnight is a write-off, mate. A few small, clean mornings here and there, but nothing that'll get your heart racing. Sometimes it's like that around here.
Rusty.
