Table - best surf conditions forecast for Etretat over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let's cut through the charts and get to what matters: the waves at Etretat.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this forecast is a bummer. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple for days on end. The water temp is sitting at a very unusual 65°F, which is much warmer than normal for this time of year. That's about the only thing out of the ordinary, because the surf sure isn't.
The first couple of weeks are grim. From Tuesday, July 7th, right through to the end of next week, it’s mostly flat or ankle-slappers. Winds are a mess, mostly onshore or cross-onshore, and the swell energy is pathetic. We're seeing readings as low as 5 (weak energy), and even when a little pulse shows up, like on Saturday the 11th with a 5ft swell from the NNE, the wind is howling onshore at 25 mph. That's just blown-out junk, not surf. The combined energy does jump to 148 (moderate energy) then, but with those winds, it’s more of a kiteboarding scene than a paddling one. This pattern of strong onshore winds and messy, short-period swell (4 to 6 seconds) is a consistent feature for this whole stretch.
After a couple of days with zero wave data on the 12th and 13th, things try to clean up late in the second week. On Sunday, July 19th, the wind finally goes offshore from the WSW at 9 mph. We get a slight 1ft swell, but the period is a weak 4 seconds. Then again on Monday, July 20th, we get a morning with offshore wind from the SW at 16 mph, but again, only 1ft of swell. The energy readings are 4 and 5 (very weak), so you’re on a longboard praying for a bump. These are clean, but tiny.
So what's the standout? Honestly, there isn't one. The best of a bad bunch is that Sunday, July 19th, and Monday, July 20th, mornings. The wind will be offshore, making the water glassy, so if you have a big board and zero expectations, you might get a few knee-high dribblers. Etretat is a consistent reef break, but even a consistent spot can’t make waves out of nothing. It’s just not happening this period. The 21st and 22nd are back to tiny and cross-shore winds.
Bottom line: save your wax. The surf is a write-off for the next 16 days unless the long-range forecasts change. It’s a blank run, plain and simple.
Rusty.
