Table - best surf conditions forecast for Etretat over the next 16 days.
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s be straight with you – this outlook for Etretat is a bit of a quiet one. It’s a reef break that’s a beginner-friendly spot and it’s consistent, but the next couple of weeks are looking pretty flat and messy. We’ve got a long stretch of poor conditions ahead, so don’t get your hopes up too early.
Right now, and for the next several days, there’s practically nothing happening. Up until around the 26th of July, we’re looking at a lot of near-flat surf, with most days showing wave heights under 1.6 ft and combined swell energy in the single digits (0 to 92). The wind is mostly onshore or cross-onshore, especially through the 13th and 14th, with a fresh to strong breeze from the NE making things even choppier. The morning of the 16th has a brief moment of light offshore wind with WSW, but the swell is only 0.3 ft – not worth paddling out for.
The first real glimmer of something shows up on Sunday the 27th of July morning. We’re seeing a modest bump in wave energy, with a 3 ft swell from the west at a 9-second period. The combined energy hits 119 (moderate energy), but it’s blown out by a moderate onshore wind from the NNE. That afternoon, the swell picks up a little to 3.6 ft (still from the west, 9-second period), energy climbs to 189, but the cross-onshore wind kills the quality. It’s a bit of a tease.
The standout window – and I’m using that term loosely here – is the morning of Tuesday the 28th of July. We’ve got a 3 ft west swell, 8-second period, with a light cross-onshore breeze from the ENE. The combined energy is 108 (moderate). It’s the cleanest option in the whole run, and for a beginner-friendly reef like Etretat, that’s your best bet. But honestly, it’s still not special. The swell is small, period is short, and the direction (W) isn’t the optimum SW that this break really loves.
If you’re a kite surfer, the 24th and 25th of July might be more interesting, with stronger winds (15-19 mph) and clean cross-offshore conditions, even if the surf is tiny. For paddle surfing, there’s nothing to get excited about until that last week of July, and even then, it’s a marginal day at best.
Stay patient, keep an eye on the forecast, and don’t rush out for this one.
