Table - best surf conditions forecast for Etretat over the next 16 days.
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s get into it.
Well, I’m gonna be straight with you – the outlook for Etretat over the next sixteen days is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with hardly anything to get excited about. The water is currently sitting at 65°F – that’s a whopping 6°F warmer than usual for this time of year, which is very unusual. But warm water won’t save a flat spell.
The first week is basically a write-off. From Thursday 9th July right through to Monday 20th July, we’ve got a consistent run of poor surf conditions. The waves are tiny, mostly around 0.7ft to 1.0ft, and the wind is blowing straight onshore from the NNE or NE, often at 12 to 25 mph, which is making a mess of things. The swell energy is barely registering, with figures like 6, 8, or 11 on the combined energy scale – that’s as weak as it gets. Even on Saturday 11th July when the swell bumps up to 4ft, the period is a short 5 seconds and the wind is a strong 25 mph onshore, so it’s just a churned-up mess. Not worth paddling out for.
There’s a small window of cleaner conditions from the 16th to the 18th of July, with some cross-offshore winds, but the swell is basically non-existent at 0.3ft. That’s a lake, not a surf break.
The only glimmer of hope comes right at the end of the period. On Tuesday morning, 21st July, we finally see a cleaner setup with a 3ft swell from the west and a gentle cross-offshore breeze from the WSW. The combined energy is a modest 74, which is still weak, but it’s the best thing we’ve seen. The wind is clean, and the swell direction is straight out of the west, which is the optimum swell direction for the Etretat reef. This is the standout of the outlook, but it’s a very long way off and the energy is low, so don’t hold your breath.
For the rest of the time, you’re looking at gaps of several days with absolutely zero recommendations. It’s a blank run. Honestly, for this area, that’s not unusual. It tends not to stay poor for long, and forecasts can change, but right now, this is a time to wax the longboard for a flat day paddle or just take a break. The kite surfers might get a look-in on the windier days, but for paddle surfing, it’s a no-go.
Rusty.
