The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. We’ve got a look at the surf ahead for Etretat, and I gotta be straight with you – it’s a tough one. The next 16 days are looking like a long, flat spell with only a whisper of hope right at the very end.
Let's get the bad news out of the way first. From now through the end of August and into the first week of September, it’s a wasteland. The swell is tiny, the wind is mostly wrong, and the forecast is a solid string of poor surf conditions. There’s a couple of days with offshore winds, like Thursday the 27th and Tuesday the 2nd of September, but the swell is so small – 0.3 ft to 2 ft – it’s barely a ripple. It’s a real bummer, especially for a spot that can be fun. You’re looking at a gap of about 12 days with nothing worth getting wet for.
The only glimmer on the horizon comes around Thursday the 5th of September. The morning shows a small 1 ft swell from the WNW with a 9-second period, and the wind is offshore from the SW. The combined energy is a weak 25 (very weak). It’s nothing to write home about, but it’s the cleanest, most promising window in the whole forecast. The afternoon holds the same small swell with offshore winds. But honestly, for Etretat, this is tiny and weak.
There is one day that stands out from the rest – Saturday the 29th of August. It’s the only day with some real size. The morning brings a 6 ft swell from the WNW with a 7-second period, and the afternoon has 5 ft from the west. The combined energy hits 352 and 200 (moderate wave energy). That’s the biggest swell of the period. The wind is cross-offshore, so the conditions will be clean. But here’s the kicker: at 6 ft, this is pushing into expert territory, and with a short period of 7 seconds, it’s going to be a bit of a bumpy, crumbly mess. This is the kind of day where the setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. It’s not the friendly, clean surf we’d want.
So, to sum it up: the best on offer is that Saturday the 29th of August for the biggest swell, but it’s a short-period, expert-only affair. The safest bet for a clean but tiny wave is Thursday the 5th of September. Everything else is a long wait for not much of a reward.
Keep your head up, though. Forecasts can change.
Rusty.
