Table - best surf conditions forecast for Etretat over the next 16 days.
Alright, grab a coffee, let’s see what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks here at Etretat.
Honestly, I’ll be straight with you – it’s a grim stretch for a long while. We’re looking at a big fat blank for the first several days. The forecast up to the 11th of July is a total write-off. Tiny scraps of swell, never even hitting a proper rideable size, and that persistent onshore wind from the NE just ruining any chance of clean waves. You’d be kidding yourself to paddle out.
Even through to the 14th of July, it’s pretty bleak. The wind stays nasty onshore, and while we do see the swell pop up a touch on Tuesday afternoon – about 5 ft from the NNE – that’s coming with 22 mph wind straight on it. It’s gonna be a blown-out mess. That wave energy is edging into moderate territory (156), but the quality just isn’t there for a paddle surfer. Honestly, with that setup, this might be more interesting for the kite crew than anyone trying to hang five.
The water’s worth mentioning if you do get wet. The first record shows it at 65° – that’s a solid 6° warmer than normal for this time of year. Very unusual feeling for July.
We do finally get a glimmer of hope on the 21st of July, Tuesday morning. The wind swings to the W at 16 mph, and importantly, it’s cross-offshore. That’ll clean things up nicely. Only problem? The swell is a pathetic 1.0 ft from the WNW. It’s clean, but you’ll be scratching for anything rideable. The energy behind it is still weak (27), so don’t get your hopes up for a barrel.
The rest of that week stays clean, with cross-off winds from the west, but the swell never gets going. Best we see is 2 ft on the 22nd. If you’re desperate for a float and a tan, you could get a longboard out on the Wednesday or Thursday morning, but it’s not proper surf.
The one to watch – and I say this with caution because it’s long-range and the models could flip – is that Tuesday the 21st. It’s the only window in the whole outlook where the wind is in our favour and the conditions are clean. It’s a punt, but it’s all we’ve got.
The bottom line: the first week and a half is a total bust. After that, we get clean conditions but absolutely no power. The area is famous for being consistent, but this run is a real tester.
Rusty.
