The Lowdown
Yo, Rusty here, checkin' in on Stinky Bay. Gotta lay it down flat – the next week is a total loss. We're talkin' day after day of poor surf, crappy winds, and nothing to ride. It's a dry spell that lasts for a good two weeks. The only faint light at the end of the tunnel ain't till the start of September.
Right now, the water's sittin' at about 68°, which feels way warmer than what we usually get this time of year. That's a 4-degree anomaly, so you'll definitely feel it if you're used to the late-August chill.
Every little bump of swell that tries to show up gets hammered by onshore, cross-onshore, or just plain howling wind. The energy's weak, the waves are tiny, and it ain't worth paddlin' out. Even on the 23rd of August, when the wind is offshore and clean, the swell is barely a foot with energy at 17 (weak). By the 24th, the wind's a strong breeze from the east, keeping it glassy but making it impossible to paddle into a wave that's only 0.7 feet.
So we wait. The blank run is a long one. But then, just when you're about to wax your board for the season, there's a whisper of hope.
The one true standout is the morning of Friday, September 4th. That's when Stinky Bay could finally light up. We're talkin' a 5 foot west swell, with a period of 8 seconds and energy at 354 – solid, moderate juice. The wind goes light cross-offshore from the north at 9 mph, and the conditions are called "clean". For a reef that needs that west direction to work, this is the best bet by a country mile. The afternoon hangs in there too, with a 5 foot swell and energy skyrocketing to 531, though the wind goes side-shore. It's a long ways out, so stay loose, but it's promisin'.
So there you have it. A whole heap of flat, windy nothing, then one crisp, clean morning. Keep the faith.
Rusty.
