The Lowdown
Righto, let's have a look at what's on the cards for Stinky Bay. It's a bit of a slow burn to start, so don't be in a rush. We're looking at a solid 16-day window, but honestly, the first week is pretty grim. The swell is tiny and the wind is often howling, so you're not missing much.
The first few days, from Sunday the 23rd through to about Wednesday the 26th, are a write-off. We're talking dribbly 0.7ft to 1ft waves with way too much wind. The combined wave energy is a measly 7 to 30 (weak energy), so there's just nothing there to work with. It's a classic case of the ocean being flat and angry.
Things start to get a bit more interesting on Thursday the 27th, with a pulse of swell pushing up to 5ft, but it's a short-period, 5-second windswell from the SW, and the wind is fresh and cross-onshore, making it lumpy. The energy climbs to 101 (moderate), but it's still a messy, poor surf conditions.
Now, the real standout, and the only one I'd really get excited about, is the window around Friday the 28th and Saturday the 29th. The swell is going to jump up, hitting 8ft from the west on Saturday morning. The combined energy on that Saturday peaks at 916 (strong to very strong). But here's the catch, and it's a big one. The wind is howling onshore, a strong breeze from the west, and it's raining. That much swell with that much onshore wind is going to be a total washing machine. At 8ft, it's also only for the experts. For a reef break like Stinky Bay, which is exposed to the west, this is a ton of raw power, but it'll be a battle. The period on the Friday is a decent 10 seconds, suggesting some groundswell, but it's just too blown out to be good.
After that, it tapers off. The end of the first week and into the second week sees smaller, more manageable waves, but the wind is still a bit of a lottery. A couple of windows on the 31st of August and the 3rd of September show clean conditions with a light breeze, but the swell is tiny, around 2ft to 4ft. The energy is low, around 59 to 61 (weak energy). You could get a grovelly little wave on a log, but it's not worth a special trip.
Beyond that, into the first week of September, it's a mix of small, wind-affected swell and messy conditions. The wind is often cross-onshore, and the wave heights are struggling to get over 4ft. The energy levels are mostly in the weak to moderate range.
So, to be brutally honest, there's nothing truly "on" here. The best bet for a surf would be the very early morning of the 31st of August, where you'd get a tiny, clean 3ft wave from the west with a gentle breeze. It's a meagre offering, but it's the cleanest window in the whole outlook. The water temperature is about average for the time of year.
