The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s be straight with it – this outlook for Stinky Bay is a tough one. We’ve got a long stretch of pretty ordinary conditions on the cards, so we need to be patient. The water’s sitting at 68°, which is much warmer than usual for this time of year, so that’s something to enjoy while you wait.
The best window is not right now. In fact, for the first several days, we’ve got poor to marginal surf. Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th are a write-off with fresh cross-onshore wind and lumpy, choppy conditions. The swell is there, around 4 ft to 6 ft from the west, but the wind just ruins it.
Friday 21st morning offers a little hope. A 4 ft west swell with a modest 9-second period, and a cross-offshore breeze from the north, which should clean things up. The combined energy is 207 (moderate wave energy). It’s only rated marginal due to tide, but if you can work the bank, it’ll be the cleanest we get for a while. After that, the weekend drops right off into tiny surf—2 ft and smaller—with strong offshore winds on Saturday and Sunday that make paddling a mission. Monday 24th is for kites, not surfboards, with 0.6 ft waves and a raging 28 mph offshore breeze.
The swell tries to pick up again from Thursday 27th August, but it’s mostly cross-onshore winds. Swell heights of 4 ft to 4 ft, but the wind is blowing from the south-southwest, making it choppy. The combined energy gets up to 304 on Thursday afternoon (moderate wave energy), but the quality is not there.
There’s a small glimmer on the 1st of September. Tuesday morning shows a cleaner 6 ft swell from the west, period 9 seconds, with a cross-offshore north-northwest breeze. Combined energy is 498 (moderate to strong). That’s your best chance for a decent paddle, but note the swell direction is straight west, which is the optimum for this exposed reef. It’s an intermediate wave, fairly consistent, but crowds are often around, so don’t expect a quiet session.
The last few days into the first week of September offer marginal conditions again, with 5 ft swells and light winds, but nothing to get excited about. If you’re after something rideable, stick to the 1st of September (Tuesday) morning. It’s not epic, but it’s the standout in a flat and windy forecast.
Keep an eye on the sky, and don’t write the place off—forecasts can change.
Rusty.
