The Lowdown
Alright, let’s get this straight. I’m looking at the next sixteen days, and I’m not gonna lie to you – it’s a tough stretch for the Bay. We’ve got a long, dry spell of poor surf ahead. We’re talking a solid week to ten days where there’s just nothing on offer. The swell is small, the wind is messy, and it’s just not going to be worth the paddle out. It’s one of those times where you’re better off leaving the boards in the car and finding something else to do.
The water is a real talking point though. When we do get going, you’re looking at about 67.8° water, which is a full 4.1° warmer than normal for this time of year. That’s a big deal around here, a real anomaly.
The first faint glimmer of hope shows up on Friday the 28th. The morning is still pretty grim, with a cross-onshore wind making things choppy. But the afternoon, that’s the first moment we get a “good” call. We’re looking at a clean 5ft 3in of west swell, a 366 combined energy reading in the moderate range. The wind is light offshore, so it should clean things up. It’s the first real window, but it’s not the main event.
The standout, the one you want to circle on the calendar, is Tuesday the 1st of September. That’s a full week away, so treat it with some caution, but the models are showing something special. The morning is still too big and messy, but the afternoon is the call. We’re talking a solid 6ft 10in of west-northwest groundswell with a long 11-second period. The combined energy is a massive 1083, which is strong, very strong. The wind is light offshore, making it glassy. The catch? At that size, this reef break is an expert-only wave. It’s going to be big, powerful, and not for the faint of heart. Still, for those who know what they’re doing, that’s the day. It’s the clear standout of the entire run, the only real pulse of energy that lines up with clean conditions.
Before that, we have that Friday afternoon wave on the 28th, which will be a good warm-up. But that Tuesday, September 1st, that’s the one.
