The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the cards for Stinky Bay.
Right now, the surf is tiny and not worth paddling out for, with a small 2ft of WNW swell and only 88 units of energy. It’s clean on Saturday morning with that light offshore, but there’s just not enough push. The first few days are mostly a write-off: the swell drops even further Sunday and Monday, while the wind howls offshore so hard you’ll struggle to paddle into the ankle-biters.
We’ve got a big gap of nothing really surfable for several days after that. The wind switches around mid-week, but the waves are just too small or the wind is on it. Thursday the 27th of August will see a massive jump in size – 10ft of WSW swell and over 1000 units of energy – but that’s cross-onshore and way too big for Stinky Bay. That day is for experts only, if anyone is silly enough, and even then the conditions are messy. The run of poor conditions continues right through into the first days of September, with onshore wind or lumpy cross-onshore stuff ruining any decent swell that comes through.
The only real standout, and it’s a good one, comes on Wednesday the 2nd of September. That morning, you’ll find 4ft of clean, lined-up swell from the west, with a light cross-off breeze and over 300 units of energy. It’s clean and has some push. By the afternoon, it gets even better: the wind goes completely glassy, the swell ticks up to 5ft, and energy hits 407. This is the window to aim for – clean, surfable waves with a bit of grunt. Crowds are likely though, as it’s often busy. Saturday the 5th of September has a marginal shot with 6ft and a clean cross-off, but the swell direction isn’t ideal and the period is short, so it won’t be as good as that Wednesday.
To be honest, the 16-day run is mostly flat or ugly, but that one Wednesday window is a true diamond in the rough. Get on it if you can.
Rusty.
