The Lowdown

Alright, Rusty here again. Let's talk about Praia de Jaguaribe in terms a little more familiar if you think in feet and knots.

Honestly, the first week and a half is a bit of a bust. We're looking at a lot of small, weak swell with messy wind for most of it. The combined energy is low – mostly in the weak range – meaning there's not much punch behind the waves. Water temp is around 79°, so pretty standard for the season.

The one bright spot that might just make it all worthwhile is the morning of Saturday, August 15th. That's the one to mark on the calendar. Early that morning, the wind goes glassy – a dead calm from the south. That'll leave the surface like a mirror. The swell is from the ESE at about 3 feet, but the period jumps to a long 14 seconds. That's proper groundswell juice, and with that long interval, the waves will have some real shape and power (combined energy hits 399). For a spot like this, it might be best on a point or reef as a beach break can get a bit straight with that long period. It's a clean, inviting setup. Just know that this break can draw a crowd when it's looking good.

The rest of the 16 days is pretty ordinary. That afternoon the wind turns onshore and strong, and the following week is a mess of strong SE winds and rain, with raw, choppy conditions. There's a long run of no-good after that one session.

So, if you're waiting for a window, that Saturday the 15th morning is your only real bet. Get out there early.

Rusty.
