The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s happening with the surf over the next couple of weeks.
To be straight with you, the outlook for New Smyrna Inlet is a long, flat stretch. We’re looking at a run of days with barely a ripple on offer. The pattern starts with tiny surf that won't get you out of first gear, and it just doesn’t build into anything rideable for the entire 16-day window. There’s a gap from the start right through to the end of the period with no real surf to speak of. Every single entry is flagged as poor surf conditions, so don’t bother paddling out for waves.
The first few days, from Tuesday the 14th through to the end of the week, we’re looking at ankle-snappers at best. Swell heights are hovering around 1 ft to 1 ft, mostly from the ESE or NE with short periods of 6 to 9 seconds. The combined energy is weak, reading between 15 and 45. There’s no power in the water. The water temperature is sitting at 84° and that’s about normal for the time of year, so that’s one thing that’s not out of whack.
The second week doesn’t offer any hope either. From Monday the 21st right through to Wednesday the 29th, the swell struggles to even reach 3 ft, and the period stays short, mostly 8 seconds or less. The combined energy finally ticks up to 101 on the afternoon of Tuesday the 28th, which is a very weak moderate energy. Even then, with a short period and a moderate breeze from the SSE, it’s going to be a messy, choppy affair. The best wind you’ll see is light offshore or glassy conditions on a few mornings, but with no swell to work with, it’s a total tease.
Honestly, this setup is more interesting for a kite surfer than a paddle surfer, given the small, weak waves and often cross-shore breezes. For us, it’s a blank run. Forecasts can change, but right now, there’s nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
