The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cooking for New Smyrna Inlet. I’ll be straight with you – the next 16 days are a tough stretch for surfers. The wave energy is gutless through most of the first week and a half, with the combined energy of all swells directed here barely cracking 50 (weak energy) for days on end. That’s flat spells, my friends.

We kick off with a real dud. Saturday the 29th through Monday the 7th of September is a long, grinding gap with no surf worth chasing. The swell is tiny, mostly 0.7 ft to 3 ft, and the wind is all over the shop – cross-onshore, onshore, and choppy. A few mornings look clean, like the 5th of September with a light cross-offshore and glassy conditions, but the swell is just a pathetic 1.0 ft to 1 ft. Not enough to push a ripple.

The first real blip of interest appears on Tuesday the 8th of September. The afternoon shows a jump in energy to 145 (moderate wave energy) with a 2 ft swell from the east and a 12-second period. That’s a proper groundswell, and the wind is light cross-offshore, keeping it clean. But the model still calls it “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” It’s the best of a bad bunch, but I wouldn’t paddle out expecting much. The water temperature is 83° – that’s about normal for this time of year, no surprise there.

Then, on Saturday the 13th of September, we get a serious spike. The swell jumps to 7 ft from the ENE, with a combined energy of 440 (strong wave energy). By Sunday the 13th, it’s 7 ft from the ENE with 532 (strong wave energy). But here’s the catch – the wind is onshore at 15 mph, turning it into a messy, stormy mess. The period is short, 7 to 8 seconds, so it’s windswell, not groundswell. It’s too big for beginners and messy for everyone else. New Smyrna Inlet is a beach/jetty setup, so with that onshore wind and 6 ft+ swell, it’s more likely to look like a kite surfing zone than a clean surf break. The model says “poor surf conditions” all the way through, and honestly, I trust that.

There is no standout day here. The best you’ll get is a rare clean window with tiny surf, or a big, blown-out mess. For a spot that’s usually very consistent, this is a quiet run. Forecasts can change, but right now, I’d leave the board in the car.

Rusty.
