The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here, looking at what’s on offer for Linkys over the next couple of weeks. To be honest, this is a tough one – the surf outlook is pretty grim for most of the period, with only a few moments that might be worth a look.
Right now, we’re coming off the back of a flat spell. The first real chance for a wave hits early on Wednesday morning, 19 August. It’s going to be small, with a 3 ft swell from the SE, but the real story here is the wind. It’s glassy, absolutely dead calm, so if you’re desperate for a paddle, you could get a few clean little lines. The period is a short 7 seconds, so don’t expect much push, and the energy is weak (57). The water temp is sitting at 66°, which is about average for this time of year, so nothing unusual there.
Thursday morning, 20 August, offers a similar story. Another 2 ft SE swell, glassy conditions again, but the period is still short at 8 seconds. It’s surfable, but very ordinary. The crowd factor at Linkys can be a bit of an issue – it’s often busy, so with these tiny waves, you’ll be fighting for scraps.
The next tiny glimmer comes on Monday morning, 24 August. We get a 1 ft SE swell with a 12-second period, and the wind swings offshore from the WSW. That’s clean, but the swell height is tiny. It’s a long period groundswell, which is good for a more defined wave, but at 1 ft it’s barely breaking. The energy is low (58).
Now, the real standout, if you want to call it that, pops up right at the end of the window. On Sunday, 30 August, we see a jump in swell. The morning has a 5 ft SE swell with a 15-second period – that’s a long period groundswell, which can produce some quality lines, especially at a reef and point setup like Linkys. The energy is strong (887). But there’s a catch: the wind is cross-onshore from the N at 19 mph, making it lumpy. The afternoon improves slightly, with the same 5 ft swell but a 12-second period, and the wind drops to 9 mph from the NNE, still cross-onshore. The energy is very strong (1089). This is the best on offer, but it’s still only marginal. The cross-onshore wind will chop it up, and for a spot that’s often crowded, it’s not going to be pretty. Because the swell is 5 ft, it’s manageable for most, but the conditions won’t do it any favours. This is a promise, but a long-range one, so don’t bank on it.
Monday morning, 31 August, finishes the run with a glassy 3 ft ESE swell, period of 9 seconds. The energy is moderate (170), and the wind is dead calm, so it’s clean. But the swell is still small and the quality is just ordinary.
Overall, it’s a flat and wind-troubled run. The only two glimmers are the glassy mornings on the 19th and 20th for tiny waves, and then the bigger but choppy pulse on the 30th. If you’re a beginner, the 5 ft swell on the 30th might be a bit much with the wind, and the rest is too small. For the experts, the 30th offers the best chance, but it’s not a day to get excited about. The first week is a bust, and the second week only has that one day that might be worth a look. It’s just one of those periods where the ocean is playing hard to get.
Rusty.
