The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the menu for the next couple of weeks at Linkys. I’ll be straight with you, it’s a pretty grim outlook for the most part. We’re looking at a long stretch of flat, weak, and messy conditions before a brief glimmer of hope shows up way down the line.
The pattern for the next week and a half is dominated by very small, short-period swell from the southeast. The combined energy is weak, sitting in the double digits and low triple digits (around 18 to 125), which is just not enough to get the heart racing. The water temp is hovering around 66°, which is about average for the time of year, nothing to write home about.
For the first few days, from Saturday the 22nd right through to the end of August, it’s a write-off. We’re looking at small, weak waves—mostly around 1.0 ft to 3 ft—with rough onshore or cross-shore winds. The wind states are a mess: cross-onshore, choppy, or just plain poor. It’s a real struggle. There’s a slight reprieve on Monday the 24th afternoon with a clean offshore wind from the west-southwest, but the swell is only 3 ft from the southeast with a short period of 7 seconds. It’s surfable but very ordinary, a real “if you’re desperate” kind of session.
Then we hit a flat spell. From Tuesday the 25th through to the end of the first week of September, the swell drops off a cliff. Heights are mostly below 2 ft, and the combined energy barely ticks over (as low as 2!). There are some glassy conditions on Wednesday the 26th afternoon, but with only 2 ft of weak, short-period swell, it’s barely a ripple. The wind does turn offshore or clean at times, but there’s just no power in the water to work with. This is a proper drought.
Now, here’s where it gets interesting. After a long, boring run, we finally see a pulse of swell showing up for Friday the 4th of September. The morning is the standout. We’re looking at a 5 ft swell from the southeast with a period of 7 seconds, but the combined energy jumps up to 228 (moderate energy). The wind is a light offshore from the south, and it’s described as clean. That’s the best we’ve got. The break is a reef and point setup, which is good because the swell direction is from the southeast, and the optimum for this spot is from the northeast. It’s not a perfect match, but the clean conditions and the increase in size make it the pick of the entire forecast. However, keep in mind this spot is inconsistent and for advanced surfers only. Also, crowds are often an issue here, so expect some company.
The afternoon of Friday the 4th sees the swell push to 5 ft, but the wind swings to a cross-shore from the south-southeast, and the conditions become marginal. Saturday the 5th morning still has some 5 ft swell, but it’s cross-shore and the forecast is also marginal. After that, it drops off again.
So, to wrap it up: the next 10 days or so are a total bust. The only real chance to get wet is the morning of Friday the 4th of September. That’s the one to circle on the calendar. It’s a long way off, so it’s not a lock, but it’s the only one that looks promising. Otherwise, it’s a waiting game.
Rusty.
