The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ at Linkys.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this stretch is looking pretty flat and quiet. We’re talkin’ a solid run of weak, small conditions that won’t get your heart racing. The first week and a half is mostly a write-off, with hardly any energy to speak of. The swell is tiny, the wind is often messy, and the whole setup is just... ordinary. There’s a big gap from the start right through until around the 22nd of July where you’d be better off cleaning your board than paddling out.
The first faint glimmer of hope shows up on Wednesday the 22nd of July afternoon. We finally get a westerly offshore breeze (9 mph) cleaning things up, but the swell is still only 3 ft from the SE, period at 6 seconds – that’s short and weak. The combined energy is a measly 51 – pathetic. It’s surfable, but barely. The next morning, Thursday the 23rd, is a similar story: 3 ft SE swell with a light wind, and the energy ticks up to 86. Still, it’s not gonna have you calling in sick.
After that, it’s back to the doldrums for days. The wind is mostly cross or onshore, and the swell is small and weak. There’s a minor uptick around the 25th and 26th of July, with the swell touching 4 ft and the energy hitting 166 on the 25th afternoon, but the cross-shore wind is going to chop it up. Not worth the drive.
The best of the entire window, and I mean the absolute standout, is Monday the 27th of July morning. The water is a touch warmer than normal at 67°, and the wind goes glassy – dead calm from the south at just 3 mph. The swell is a clean 3 ft from the SE, period 7 seconds. The energy is only 66, so it’s not powerful, but glassy conditions on a reef-and-point break like Linkys will make those tiny waves feel like gold. That’s your window. If you can get out there, do it.
The tail end of the month, from the 30th of July, shows a few more surfable windows with clean offshore winds, but the swell never gets above 2 ft and the energy stays in the moderate range (143 tops). It’s small, but it’s clean. If you’re desperate, that’s your second-best bet.
Bottom line: Linkys is going to be a frustrating spot for the next two weeks. The waves are tiny, the wind is often wrong, and the consistency is poor. There’s no real juice in the tank. If you’re a beginner, the small surf (under 5 ft) is safe, but there’s nothing to ride. For the rest of us, it’s a waiting game. The glassy morning on the 27th of July is your best shot – don’t sleep on it.
Rusty.
