The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s look at what’s on the menu for Linkys over the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, mate, it’s a pretty sorry outlook. This is a tricky reef and point break that’s rarely consistent, and the next 16 days are mostly a bust. There’s a long gap from the start right through to the end of August with almost nothing to surf. Water temp is about 20°, which is pretty normal for this time of year.
The whole first week—from Monday the 17th through to Sunday the 23rd—is a total blank. Swell is tiny, mostly under 0.6m, with weak energy (between 3 and 92 units). Winds are cross or onshore, and every session is rated “poor surf conditions.” Not a single wave scores above a 0 out of 10. It’s more of a kite surfing setup than anything for a paddle board.
The second week doesn’t offer much. Monday the 24th and Tuesday the 25th have clean cross-offshore winds, but the swell is still tiny—about 0.4m. On Tuesday the 25th morning, there’s a brief spike of 1.4m swell from the SSE, but it’s only 5 seconds period, so it’s a short, choppy windswell with moderate energy (109). Still poor.
Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th see a bit more energy—moderate, at 256 and 332 units—but the swell is only 0.9m from the SE, and winds are onshore or cross-onshore, making for messy, choppy conditions. Friday afternoon the 28th finally gets a 1.5m swell from the SE with a 14-second period, but it’s still onshore, and the energy jumps to 1235—strong—but it’s only a “marginal” forecast with a score of 1 out of 10. That’s the best of the run, but it’s still pretty average.
The last few days, from Saturday the 29th through to Tuesday the 1st of September, are back to small, weak swells with poor conditions. Sunday the 30th morning and Monday the 31st morning have clean cross-offshore winds and surfable but very ordinary waves—0.7m and 0.8m—but nothing to get excited about.
Bottom line: no standout session here. The best bet is the afternoon of the 28th of August, with a 1.5m, 14-second SE groundswell giving moderate to strong energy, but the onshore wind ruins it. For a decent, consistent wave, you’ll need to wait for another forecast.
Rusty.
