Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Leftovers/Rightovers over the next couple of weeks. I won’t sugarcoat it – the first week and a half is a real struggle. We’ve got a long gap with very little to get excited about, so patience is the name of the game.
Right from Thursday the 2nd of July, it’s flat and messy. Tiny 0.7 ft swell from the WNW with a long 13-second period, but the cross-off wind from the ENE at 16 mph is just ruining any chance of a wave. The wave energy is weak (30), and the water here is 79°, which is pretty average for this time of year – nothing unusual there. This flat, frustrating pattern hangs around for over a week.
Through the 3rd and into the 4th of July, we see a tiny lift to 1 ft and 2 ft from the NW, but it’s still cross-off and the wind is blowing 16-19 mph. The energy stays low, barely breaking 100 on the odd afternoon. Honestly, it’s not surfable. The poor conditions just keep rolling day after day. From the 5th through to the 11th, we’re stuck under a fresh breeze with swell barely registering – we’re talking 0.3 ft to 1 ft at best. That’s more than a week of nothing worth paddling for.
We finally start to see a pulse of real energy arrive on Sunday the 12th of July. The swell jumps to 2 ft from the SW, with a proper long period of 17 seconds. That’s a groundswell, and it brings some moderate energy (191). But the cross-off wind is still hanging around at 16 mph. The quality isn’t there yet, but it’s a sign of life.
Now, Monday the 13th of July is where my ears perk up. The swell holds at 2 ft from the W, period at 16 seconds, and the wave energy climbs into the strong bracket at 252. Still cross-off, unfortunately, so it’s not glassy, but the ocean has some push. The swell direction (W) is a good match for the optimum NW direction here – it’ll wrap in nicely on this reef setup.
Into the second week, the best of it shapes up for Tuesday the 14th and Wednesday the 15th. On the 14th, we get 2 ft from the W, 16-second period, and the energy jumps to 350. That’s moderate-to-strong energy. The wind is a clean east cross-off at 16 mph. Not ideal, but it’s workable for a point or reef like this. On Wednesday the 15th, we’ve got 2 ft again from the W, 15-second period, and energy at 281. The commentary calls it “marginal,” but that’s the best we’re going to see. This is a long-period groundswell, so the sets will be defined, with good shape and some lines for an advanced crew. The reef will handle that long period well.
Given the persistent cross-off winds and the small size, nothing here is a true standout. The best on offer is Tuesday the 14th of July and Wednesday the 15th of July, with that 2 ft W swell. It’s not going to be epic, but for a spot that’s been dead for over a week, it’s a welcome pulse. The crowds here are marked as “sometimes,” so if the wind drops even a little, you could have it quiet. It’s a reef break for advanced surfers – that 2 ft won’t intimidate anyone, and the long period will make for some clean, bowling rights when it connects. The swell direction is right in the slot.
For the rest of the 16 days, after the 15th, the energy slowly fades back into the weak range, and we’re back to small, clean but gutless waves. Honestly, if you’re patient, wait for that Tuesday and Wednesday window. That’s your call.
Rusty.
