The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s cookin’ for the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, I gotta be straight with you – this outlook is a tough one. We’re looking at a long, dry spell with very little to get excited about. The first real shot of surf comes in on Tuesday, 14th July, but it’s a marginal one. The water temp is sitting at a pretty normal 79°F for this time of year, so at least the water’s warm.
The standout, if you can call it that, is Leftovers/Rightovers on Tuesday afternoon. We’ve got a 4ft NE swell rolling in with a short period of 7 seconds, so it’s gonna be a bit choppy and weak. The combined energy is moderate (473), and the wind is a cross-off from the ENE at 12 mph, which will keep the surface clean. The direction is okay, but it’s not the optimum NW from the guidance, so expect a bit of a jumbled lineup. It’s a reef break, fairly consistent, so there’ll be waves, but at this size, it’s small and probably a bit gutless. It’s an advanced break, so if you’re a beginner, this is a definite no-go.
After that, things go downhill fast. From Wednesday, 15th July, we get a weird little pulse of long-period groundswell from the west – 2ft at 15 seconds. That’s a very long period, which at a beach or reef break typically means the waves will be fat and straight. The energy is dropping (380 to 278), and the wind stays cross-off, but it’s just not enough power to make it worthwhile. Wednesday afternoon is rated as “good surf conditions” by the model, but matching that up with the numbers, it’s still a tiny, long-period wave that’s hard to ride. Not for me.
From Thursday, 16th July, all the way through to the 29th, the story is the same: poor surf conditions, tiny swells, and a steady cross-off breeze. The combined energy drops below 100 (weak) most days, and the swell heights hover around 1.0ft to 2ft. There’s a gap of about nine days in the middle where the swell is basically zero (21st to 22nd July). A small pulse shows up around the 29th with a 3ft NNE swell, but the energy is still low (112) and the period is short (8 seconds). It’s still rated as poor.
Honestly, there’s nothing here that’s a true standout. The only window that’s even worth a look is Tuesday afternoon, 14th July, for the bigger, cleaner surf, but it’s still a marginal call. The rest of the 16-day window is a write-off. If you’re a kite surfer, the steady cross-off wind and small, clean waves might actually be more interesting than what’s on offer for a paddle surfer.
Keep the board waxed, but don’t be surprised if you’re sittin’ this one out.
Rusty.
