The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks.
Honestly, it’s a pretty grim run for the most part. We’re looking at a long stretch of tiny, weak swell and steady cross-off breezes. The waves are there, but they’re barely tickling the reef. Things start off on Saturday the 18th with a tiny 1 ft WNW swell pushing in from a long 13-second period, but with 16 mph cross-off wind, it’s going to be messy and blown out. The combined energy is a weak 57, so it’s just not doing much. Water temp is sitting at 79°, which is about average for this time of year.
That tiny, gutless pattern sticks around through Sunday, Monday, and then we hit a dead zone. From Tuesday the 21st right through to Monday the 27th, the numbers drop to zero. No swell, no surf. Just clean, empty water. That’s a full week of nothing.
Now, there’s a flicker of life on Tuesday the 28th. A jump to 4 ft from the NE with a short, choppy period of 7 seconds. The combined energy climbs to 160, which is moderate, but with the onshore breeze and that short period, it’s not going to be pretty. It’s still being called poor surf conditions.
The most interesting day on the whole chart is Wednesday the 29th. The swell builds to 6 ft from the NNE, still with a short 7-second period, and the combined energy hits 286. That’s a moderate pulse. But here’s the catch – the wind shifts to a moderate cross-shore, and there’s a cross-chop on the surface. That’s a tough look for a reef break. It’s definitely not beginner-friendly at that size and with that chop. Honestly, with that cross-shore wind and bumpy water, this setup looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing.
After that, the swell fades back to tiny dribbles, with a few feeble pulses of 2 ft to 2 ft from the west through the end of the month and into early August. The periods get longer, up to 14 seconds, which is a nice long-period groundswell, but the size is just too small to get the reef working properly.
So, the only semi-standout is that Wednesday the 29th pulse, but it’s compromised by the wind and chop. If you’re desperate, you could check it, but don’t expect much. The rest of the window is a write-off.
Rusty.
