Alright, let’s look at what’s on the table for the next couple of weeks. Honestly, it’s a pretty quiet stretch overall, with a long, frustrating flat spell to start. You’re going to want to be patient.
The first proper surf worth paddling out for doesn’t show up until Sunday, July 12th. Before that, it’s all tiny, weak pulses – a bit of knee-high nothing from the NW and W, with stiff cross-off breezes. Not worth getting wet for, unless you just want to sit on your board. That’s a good five or six days of flatness right off the bat.
On Sunday morning the 12th, we finally see a real pulse of energy. Leftovers/Rightovers wakes up with a 7 ft NE swell, period a short 8 seconds. The wind is cross-off from the ENE at 16 mph, which keeps things clean, but that short period and the moderate breeze mean it’s not going to be gorgeous. The combined energy is moderate (664), so there’s power behind it, but it’s a little raw. This one’s best left for the more experienced crew. That afternoon the swell drops off quick.
From Monday the 13th through the rest of the week, we get a drawn-out, inconsistent run of waist-to-chest high W and SW groundswells. The period stretches out to 15-19 seconds, which means proper lines and good shape, but the sets will be far apart. The wind stays stubborn – cross-off from the E/ENE, 16 mph – so the surface stays mostly clean, but that breeze stops it from being really glassy and perfect. The energy is moderate (mostly between 100 and 400). If you’re keen on a point break or reef session, the longer period will suit that, but at a beach break it could be a bit straight and harder to read. Crowds are possible at Leftovers/Rightovers, so you won’t be alone.
Looking further out, there’s no standout at all in the second week. Swell sizes drop back under 3 ft after Thursday the 16th, with mostly poor to marginal conditions from the N and WNW. Energy values fall away quickly into the weak range (under 100). Nothing here to get excited about – it’s a real lull.
The water temperature is around the average for this time of year, so no wetsuit worries on that front.
So, the only real action worth chasing is Sunday, July 12th, with that short, punchy NE swell. It’s not the best quality, but it’s the only proper size in the entire run. If you’re an advanced surfer and you need a wave, that’s your window.
Take care,
Rusty
