The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here again, and I’m telling you the same story in feet and miles per hour. This 16-day stretch for La Ciotat is a brutal, flat, and disappointing run. This reef break rarely breaks, and when the swell doesn’t show, it’s a total ghost town.
For the first week, there’s nothing worth paddling for. The only tiny flicker of life comes on Friday afternoon, August 28th, with a tiny 3ft swell from the SSE, and the combined energy is a weak 68. The winds are cross-off and the conditions are clean, but the wave comment is clear: “surfable waves but very ordinary conditions.” That’s a 1 out of 10. That’s not a surf, that’s a float.
Then we hit a massive gap. From Saturday, August 29th, all the way through to Friday, September 4th, the combined energy is basically zero. Some days are glassy, some are offshore, but there’s no swell to ride. Clean wind with no waves is a cruel joke.
Things try to wake up a little on Saturday, September 5th. The morning is glassy with a 3ft swell from the ESE, but it’s still rated as poor. By the afternoon, we see a 5ft swell from the ESE, with a period of 6 seconds, and the combined energy climbs to 126 (moderate). It’s surfable but very ordinary. That’s the best the whole window has to offer, and it’s still not good. On a reef, that short-period swell won’t hold much shape. For a beginner, 5ft is a bit much, but for everyone else, it’s just... meh.
After that, the 6th and 7th of September drop back to tiny, weak swells with cross and onshore winds. It’s a frustrating run.
The water temperature is 75°F, which is only about 1°F warmer than average, so nothing unusual. The anomaly is normal for this time of year.
Honestly, if you’re looking for a paddle, you’re better off finding a pool. If there’s wind and a bit of chop, the setup here might be more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing. I’m not holding my breath.
Rusty.
