The Lowdown
Alright, I’ll level with ya. The outlook for the La Ciotat area over the next 16 days is pretty bleak if you’re looking for a proper surf session.
The only day that even halfway gets our hopes up is Friday morning, August 21. We see a small SW swell pushing in at 4 ft with a period of 6 seconds – that’s short-period, windswell stuff, not a lot of grunt. Combined wave energy is 151 – moderate. The wind is light SSW at 6 mph and it’s cross-offshore, so the surface is clean. The water temp is reading 77°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year. But here’s the catch: La Ciotat itself is a reef break that rarely breaks, and for a spot like that, you need a lot more push than what’s on offer. For a total beginner maybe there’s something to bob around on, but honestly, the conditions are ordinary.
That Friday afternoon, the wind swings WNW at 19 mph and goes offshore, but the swell stays weak and short. The rest of the run? It’s a long, dry stretch. From Saturday 22 August all the way through to Thursday 3 September, we’re looking at days of tiny, weak waves – most of them under 2 ft with combined energy barely hitting double digits – or just flat spells with zero energy. The wind sometimes cleans it up, but there’s nothing to ride.
We get a tiny flicker on Monday morning, August 31 with a 2 ft SW swell (energy 17 and clean cross-off wind), but again – that’s barely a ripple on a reef that needs a real sea running to work.
Best bet? Forget the board for the next two weeks, or if you’re deadset, try that Friday the 21st morning session on the small stuff – it’s the only window with a pulse. The rest is a write-off.
