The Lowdown
G’day, I’m Rusty. Let’s talk about what’s on offer for the next couple of weeks around Chiavari Entella (Italy). Straight up, it’s a tough run. We’ve got a long stretch of flat or tiny, weak swell with marginal or poor conditions, so don’t expect much action until we get past the first week of August.
For the first week, from Wednesday 29 July through to the morning of Saturday 8 August, we’re looking at virtually no surfable waves. Swell heights are mostly under 1.5 ft with silly short periods of 4 to 7 seconds. The combined swell energy is barely ticking over (1 to 6), and the “poor surf conditions” tag says it all. Winds are light and often glassy in the mornings, but there’s just no push. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so that’s one small comfort if you’re just having a float.
Now, the one standout – and I mean the only one worth getting out of bed for – is the morning of Saturday 8 August. We get a bump of 4.3 ft swell from the SSW with a period of 7 seconds. That’s not a groundswell, but the combined swell energy jumps to a moderate 154, so there’s some decent power. The morning wind is light from the E at 3 mph, which gives us clean, glassy-ish conditions (cross-off wind). It’s surfable but very ordinary, as the file says. Still, it’s the best we’ll see in the whole forecast. The break is a river mouth, fairly consistent, with a beginner difficulty – but at 4.3 ft, it’s manageable for most. Crowds are sometimes an issue, so keep that in mind.
After that high point, the rest of the 8th and into the second week tails off fast. Sunday 9 August onwards struggles to get above 1.6 ft, with the energy dropping back into the teens or single digits. Mornings offer glassy or clean wind, but the swell is just too small and weak. From 12 August, it’s completely flat with no records of any swell.
So, the bottom line: save your energy. The only half-decent chance is Saturday 8 August morning. Otherwise, this is a two-week stretch that will test your patience. Forecasts can change though, so keep an eye on it.
