The Lowdown

Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what the next couple of weeks are shaping up like for our little slice of coast.

To be brutally honest, the next week and a half is looking pretty flat and very ordinary. We’ve got a long stretch of small, weak surf with periods that are barely making it to the 6 second mark. The energy levels are just not there – we’re looking at combined swell energies mostly under 100 (hitting only 11 at the start), which is basically a big yawn. Winds are going to be a mixed bag, with a few clean mornings, but the afternoons get chopped up by cross-onshore breezes. Crowds are sometimes a thing here, so you won't be alone, but with waves this small, it’s more about floating around than actually surfing. The water’s about average for this time of year, so no real surprises there.

The highlight – and I use that term loosely – is Friday morning, August 21st at Chiavari Entella. It’s a river break and it's fairly consistent, but we’re only talking about 3 ft of SSW swell, with a period of 6 seconds, so it’s short and weak. The combined energy is just 80 (weak). The real win here is the wind: light ESE at 3 mph, which is cross-offshore, and the wave comment says "surfable waves but very ordinary conditions." It’s clean, but don't expect any power. It’s better than the rest of the week, which is a pretty low bar.

There is a second pulse of interest – Tuesday, August 25th. The morning brings 4 ft from the SSW with a combined energy of 107 (moderate), and again clean cross-off winds. It’s still a short period swell (6 seconds), but the best part of the day is actually the afternoon, which sees a jump to 8 ft from the SW with a period of 7 seconds. The combined energy spikes to 985 (very strong wave energy). But here’s the catch – that afternoon has a strong 9 mph cross-onshore wind, making it pretty choppy. That 8 ft is going to be a messy, powerful beast, and the break is a river, so it could be a handful. Not one for beginners, as it’s well over 5 ft. The morning session on the 25th is the best all-rounder of the whole forecast – a solid 4 ft with clean conditions. On the 26th, we get another 4 ft morning, but the energy drops and the afternoons turn to junk.

The very end of the forecast, Monday, August 31st, is a write-off. We get 5 ft of swell, but it’s being hammered by a solid 22 mph onshore wind. The combined energy is 291 (moderate to strong), but the wind comment is a straight "unknown" and it says poor surf. That’s more of a kite-surfing breeze than a paddle-surfing one.

So, for the best wave right now, I’d point you to the morning of Tuesday, August 25th. Get on the 4 ft SSW swell with the clean cross-offshore winds. That’s the only real standout in a pretty quiet run. The 8 ft on that same afternoon is too messy to call a winner. Anything after that is a long shot.

Rusty.
