The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's be straight with you. The next couple of weeks are looking pretty bleak for us here at Chiavari Entella. We've got a long stretch of tiny, weak, and messy surf ahead, with only one real window that’s worth getting excited about, and that’s a long way off.
The first ten days or so are a write-off. From Wednesday the 19th to the 27th, we're looking at a whole lot of nothing. The swell is tiny, mostly under 3 feet, and the energy is just pathetic. We're talking knee-high slop at best. Add in the constant threat of thunderstorms and onshore breezes, and you’ve got a recipe for a seriously frustrating stretch. There are a few clean moments with light offshore winds, especially on the morning of Sunday the 23rd, but with wave energy as low as it is, it's barely a ripple, not a wave. We've had a few poor days, and with this lack of any real swell, it’s just not worth getting your hopes up. This is a classic dead period for us.
Now, for the one real standout. On Friday morning, the 28th of August, things finally wake up. The charts are showing a proper pulse of south-west swell rolling in at 5 feet with a solid 9-second period. The energy jumps big time, which is a massive change from the dribble we’ve been dealing with. What’s better is the wind is forecast to be offshore from the NE, which should keep the wave face clean and make for some proper little walls. This is a river mouth, so the long-period groundswell is good news; it will focus the energy perfectly. This is the one to save your energy for. It won’t be huge, but it should be the cleanest and most powerful surf we’ll see.
The afternoon will see that swell ease slightly to around 4 feet, but the wind swings onshore, so the morning is definitely the call. After that, it fades pretty quickly and we slip right back into the flat spell. The rest of the long-range into the first days of September is looking flat and uninspiring. It’s just the reality of the area this time of year.
So, there you have it. A whole lot of waiting for one good morning on the 28th. Keep your eye on that.
Rusty, out.
