The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let’s take a look at the local scene.
Honestly, the next 16 days are a real struggle. We are looking at a long, dry spell with barely a ripple on offer. There’s a big gap of surf-less days through the middle of the period. The first couple of days have some tiny waves, but nothing worth paddling out for. The water is running exceptionally warm, about 4° above average, which is very unusual for this time of year.
The only spot on the radar is Chiavari Entella (Italy), a river mouth setup that’s fairly exposed to the SW. It’s a beginner-friendly wave, but it’s also fairly inconsistent. The best of a bad bunch is Sunday afternoon, July 19th. We’ve got a weak 2ft SW swell, but the wind is cross-on from the south at 6 mph, messing up the surface. The combined energy is weak (32). It’s not great, but it’s the only swell on the board.
Then we go into a real flat spell. From Monday, July 20th, through to Friday, July 24th, the swell drops to zero or a tiny 0.3ft. There’s some glassy, clean mornings on the 22nd and 23rd with offshore winds, but with no swell, it’s just a flat, pretty lake. Friday morning, July 24th, is glassy but with a 0.3ft swell – that’s barely a ripple.
The rest of the forecast is much the same. From Saturday, July 25th, all the way through to Monday, August 3rd, we are looking at a continuous run of zero to 0.3ft swell. There are a few glassy mornings on the 26th, 27th, 28th, 31st, and August 2nd, and even a few clean offshore mornings, but with no waves to speak of, it’s not surfable. The combined energy never gets above 3. It’s a real bummer.
For a river mouth, this setup looks more interesting for a kite or a foil than a paddle board until something changes. Hang tight, folks. These flat spells don’t last forever, but this one is a long one.
Stay salty,
Rusty
