Updates in hr min s Forecast update imminent
Alright, let’s talk about Jelly Bowl.
Right now, and for the next couple of weeks, Jelly Bowl is just not happening. We’ve got a long, dry spell ahead with hardly anything worth paddling out for. The first real chance of any surfable waves doesn’t show up until Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, and even that is a stretch.
The overall pattern is flat and weak. For the first 11 days of the forecast, it’s nothing but tiny swell, mostly around 1ft to 2ft, coming from the SSW. The wind is mostly a light cross-onshore breeze, which keeps the surface a bit bumpy. The combined wave energy is weak, barely hitting 200 at best, and often sitting well below 100, so there’s just no power behind it. Wave periods are long, 16-18 seconds, so you’d expect some ground swell, but there’s no height to go with it. It’s just not doing anything.
Then on Tuesday afternoon, July 14th, something shifts. The swell switches to the west at 2ft with a short period of 9 seconds, but the wind finally goes cross-offshore from the NNW, making the surface clean. That’s the only time in the whole 16 days we get “clean” conditions, but the wave comment still calls it ordinary. The combined energy is only 127, so it’s weak, but at least it’s not a complete waste.
Wednesday the 15th through the end of the run, it goes back to small, cross-on shore slop. The water temperature on the first day of the forecast, Friday July 3rd, is 64°F, which is a touch warmer than normal for this time of year, but that’s about the only notable thing.
Honestly, for this spot, a blank run like this is pretty normal. Jelly Bowl is a reef break that’s fairly consistent, but when the swell is this tiny and the wind is off, there’s just nothing to get excited about. If you’re desperate, that Tuesday afternoon window might give you a few grovelly ones, but don’t hold your breath.
