The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let's talk about what's coming up for Iluka-North Wall.
Overall, we're looking at a pretty quiet start to the period, with a real wait for the surf to kick in. The water temp is sitting right at 68°, which is pretty much normal for this time of year, so no wetsuit dramas there.
The first week is a bit of a write-off, to be honest. From Wednesday the 19th through to the end of August, the wave heights are tiny, mostly under 3 feet, and the energy levels are weak (often under 100). The wind is a mixed bag, but it's not enough to make the small, short-period swells (7-8 seconds) worth getting excited about. There's a bit of a window on Thursday morning the 20th when it's clean with a west offshore, but with a 5-foot swell from the ESE and a period of only 7 seconds, it's a bit weak and short period. You'll get a few crumbly ones, but it's not stand-out. The rest of that week is pretty ordinary.
We hit a real dry spell from the 22nd to the 31st of August. The waves are small and the wind is often messy. There's a few glassy mornings on the 28th and 29th, but the swell is barely there, so it's more of a paddle-out than a surf session.
Now, let's talk about the real deal. The standout action is a long way off, but it's worth planning for. On Monday morning the 31st of August, we see a pulse of new energy arrive with a 5-foot SSE swell, a 12-second period, and strong energy (628). It's a bit onshore, but the potential is there.
The real highlight, however, is the morning of Thursday the 3rd of September. This is the one to circle in your calendar. We've got a solid 10-foot swell from the SSE, with a very long 12-second period, pumping a huge amount of energy (2276). The wind is forecast to be glassy, which is about as good as it gets. This is excellent surf for experienced surfers – it's a big, powerful groundswell. The size will be too much for beginners, and the long period means it might be a bit walled up at the beach, but for the crew who know what they're doing, it's a cracker. The morning of Tuesday the 1st of September also has a decent 8-foot SSE swell, but with a cross-onshore wind, so it won't be as clean.
Take this long-range outlook with a grain of salt, but if the forecast holds, the 3rd of September is the only real standout. The rest of the 16 days is mostly a waiting game.
Rusty out.
