The Lowdown
G'day, I'm Rusty.
Alright, let's be straight with you. The next 16 days for Iluka-North Wall are a real mixed bag, and honestly, for the first week and a half, it's a write-off. The wind is relentless, chewing up the swell and making it a messy, ugly affair. You'll be sitting through a lot of dirt until we finally get a decent window.
We start on Tuesday, 14 July, but you can forget about paddling out. The swell is tiny, at 1ft from the S, with a weak 23 combined energy, and the wind is just making it messy. Nothing to see here.
The next day, Wednesday the 15th, the swell tries to build, but the wind is blowing hard from the S at 15 mph, turning the 3ft to 8ft swell into a lumpy, blown-out mess. It's a kite-surfer's dream, not a surfer's.
Thursday the 16th keeps the pattern going. The S swell jumps to 10ft, with a strong 1356 combined energy behind it, but the wind is hammering it from the SSE at 19 mph. It's a big, ugly, cross-shore chop. Stay on the beach.
This trend holds through the end of the first week and into the next. Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday... cross-shore and cross-onshore winds, mostly 15-19 mph, bullying every pulse of swell. The energy is there – by Sunday the 19th we see a 13ft swell with a massive 3499 combined energy – but it's all for nothing. The wind just ruins it.
Finally, around Thursday the 23rd, things start to settle. That nasty wind starts to ease, and we get some cleaner mornings. The standout for the whole period, though, is a beauty of a window.
The best on offer is Saturday the 25th.
It's a week and a half away, so keep an eye on the forecast, but it's looking like the pick. The morning will be glassy with a light cross-offshore breeze from the WNW at 6 mph. The swell is a solid 8ft from the ESE, with a very long period of 12 seconds (that's proper groundswell), and a strong 1558 combined energy. This is a breakwater, so that long-period swell will wrap in nicely and offer some clean, powerful lines. It's an expert wave at that size, so leave the soft-top at home. The water temp is about 69°F, which is bang on average for this time of year.
Sunday the 26th morning is also a ripper, with a light SW breeze and a clean 7ft ESE swell. The crowds are listed as "sometimes" at this spot, so on a clean weekend like this, you can expect some company. Still, it's a worthy option.
After that, the swell backs off a touch into the final days, but we get some more clean, offshore mornings. Wednesday the 29th has a light offshore wind from the W at 9 mph, and a 3ft ESE swell. It's small, but clean and workable.
So, the call is: suffer through the dirty wind for the first week and a half, then nail the windows around the 24th, 25th, and 26th. That Saturday the 25th is the one to circle.
Rusty.
