The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here. Let’s have a look at what’s on the table for Iluka-North Wall.
Right off the bat, it’s a tough stretch. This breakwater spot is exposed to the east, and for the first week and a half the wave energy is just too weak to get excited about. We’ve got some small swell, but the wind and chop are messing it up a lot of the time. The water’s sitting at 68°F with a temp anomaly of -0.7°F, which is pretty much dead average for this time of year.
The first real glimmer comes on Thursday morning, August 20th. That morning we’ve got a clean 4ft swell from the ESE, running at 8 seconds. The big plus here is glassy conditions – wind from the WSW at just 3 mph – so the surface will be smooth. The combined energy is moderate (204), and while the wave size is beginner-friendly, the short period means it won’t have heaps of push. But it’s the cleanest wave of the early run, and for a quiet weekday morning that’s worth having a look.
After that, the surf drops right off. From Friday the 21st right through to the end of August, we’re looking at ankle to knee-high dribble. Day after day of ENE windswell between 2ft and 3ft, with periods of 6 to 9 seconds, and combined energy often below 100. Most afternoons get chopped out by onshore breezes gusting 12 to 16 mph. There are a few clean-ish mornings with light offshore or glassy conditions, but the waves are just too small to bother with. There's a real quiet spell here – over a week with no proper surf.
Now, looking into the first couple of days of September, things finally wake up. On Tuesday morning, September 1st, a new SSE swell pushes in at 5ft with an 11-second period, coming from the SSE. The combined energy jumps to 507 (moderate range). Wind is from the S at 9 mph – cross-shore, so there’ll be some texture but it’s not all messy. This is the standout of the whole outlook: a solid groundswell, good size for intermediates, and long period that’ll wrap nicely along the wall. No crowds expected here either, which is rare.
The afternoon of the 1st gets bigger but messier – 7ft from the SSE, energy up at 963, but the wind swings onshore and it turns choppy. Wednesday the 2nd stays around 7ft, but again the wind’s not cooperating. The morning might offer a few if you’re happy with lumpy conditions, but the best window by far is that Tuesday morning.
Bottom line: if you’re in the area, pencil in Thursday morning the 20th for a clean, small session, then mark Tuesday morning September 1st as the real one to aim for. Bigger swell, better period, and a chance at a proper wave. The rest of the window is a lot of waiting.
Rusty.
