The Lowdown
G’day, Rusty here. Look, I’ll be straight with you – this 16-day window for Iluka North Wall (Iluka-North Wall) is a bit of a mixed bag, with plenty of waiting around for the good stuff. The first few days are pretty ordinary, but there’s a couple of sessions that’ll make it worth paddling out.
The water temp is about average for this time of year, so nothing to worry about there.
The period starts off with a real whimper. Saturday the 22nd and Sunday the 23rd are basically write-offs. The swell is small, around 3ft on Saturday and 4ft on Sunday, but the wind is all over the place – cross-off on Saturday but the wave energy is weak (74), and Sunday morning is a total mess with 12 mph southerly cross-wind and poor surf. Not worth a look.
Monday the 24th has a bit of a tease. The morning shows a 2ft swell from the SSE with a long 12-second period, and the combined energy is moderate (183). It’s clean with a light southwesterly cross-off, but it’s tiny. The afternoon gets chopped out by an onshore breeze.
Tuesday the 25th and Wednesday the 26th are still nothing to write home about. The swell hovers around 3ft to 4ft, but the wind keeps messing it up. The one standout in this stretch is Wednesday morning, the 26th – glassy conditions with a 4ft ENE swell and a light WSW breeze. The combined energy is moderate (176), and it’s clean. It’s a small, fun window for a beginner-friendly wave, but it’s not pumping.
Now, the first real highlight comes on Thursday the 27th and Friday the 28th. Thursday morning is the pick of the early run: a 4ft ENE swell with an 8-second period, light SSW cross-off wind at 6 mph, and clean conditions. The combined energy is solid (220). Friday morning is very similar – 4ft ENE swell, light northerly cross-off, and clean. Both of these mornings are rated as good surf. The crowd factor is “sometimes,” so you might have a few others out, but it’s a small, consistent breakwater setup that’s great for beginners.
Saturday the 29th morning is also worth a mention – glassy again with a 4ft ENE swell and moderate energy (233). Clean and smooth.
Then we hit a rough patch. From Saturday afternoon the 29th right through to Thursday the 3rd of September, it’s mostly poor. The swell gets bigger – up to 8ft on the 31st – but the wind is howling onshore or cross-on, making it a choppy mess. The combined energy climbs into the hundreds (632 to 924), but with strong onshore winds, it’s more of a kite-surfing situation than a paddle session. The break is a breakwater, not a beach, so it gets messy fast.
The real standout of the whole outlook is Friday the 4th of September afternoon. That’s the one to circle. A 6ft swell from the NNE with a 7-second period, but here’s the kicker – offshore wind from the west at 6 mph, clean conditions, and the combined energy is strong (530). This is rated as very good surf. The offshore wind will groom it nicely, and for a beginner-friendly spot like Iluka North Wall, that’s as good as it gets.
Saturday the 5th of September is a big swell day – 12ft from the SSE with a 9-second period and massive energy (2324). That’s expert-only territory, and the wind is cross-shore, so it’s lumpy. Not for the faint-hearted.
Best bet: Thursday 27th and Friday 28th of August mornings for clean, manageable waves, but the absolute standout is Friday 4th of September afternoon with offshore wind and a solid 6ft swell.
Rusty.
