The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, let’s have a look at what’s on offer.
Honestly, the next week and a half is a bit of a write-off for decent surfing at Iluka-North Wall. We’ve got plenty of size, but the wind is just mean – strong cross-shore and cross-onshore winds, mostly from the south and southeast, are just shredding the surface. For the first several days, it’s a messy, lumpy chop with plenty of rain and storms around. The water temp is 69°F, which is pretty average for the time of year, so no surprises there.
We’ve got a solid pulse of swell from the south and southeast, with combined wave energy climbing into the thousands (643 to over 3500), but it’s all blown out. The period is short, around 7 to 8 seconds – that’s weak, wind-driven stuff, not the kind of groundswell that makes you want to paddle out. For a couple of days, the swell height hits 12 ft to 13 ft, but that’s only for the experts if the wind was good, and it’s not. It’s more of a kitesurfing scene than a paddle session.
The first real window of hope shows up on Wednesday the 22nd of July during the afternoon. We get a drop in swell to 5 ft from the east, but the wind goes glassy. That’s proper clean. The combined energy is down to 436 – still moderate, and the period is 10 seconds, so there’s a bit of shape. The break is a breakwater, exposed and consistent, but it’s a beginner spot so that size is fine. The catch? It’s only a brief window.
Then on Friday the 24th of July in the morning, there’s another glassy moment with 4 ft east-northeast swell, period 9 seconds, and calm west winds. Again, clean, but small. The break is likely to have crowds *sometimes*, so you might have a few friends out.
The real standout is the morning of Thursday the 30th of July. That’s a solid 5 ft swell from the south-southeast, period 8 seconds, with light offshore winds from the west-southwest, and the forecast says “expect very good surf conditions”. The combined energy is 504, so moderate but punchy. This is the best on offer in the whole 16-day window – clean, head-high, and offshore. It’s a beginner break, but that size is still fun for anyone. Keep an eye on that date.
Other than that, there are long gaps of days with nothing worth paddling out for. The end of the window sees a few clean, tiny waves, but nothing to get excited about.
Rusty.
