The Lowdown
Alright, Rusty here, looking at the surf ahead for the next couple of weeks.
Well, to be honest, it’s a bit of a grim start. We’re looking at a long stretch of nothing special. The first decent chance of a wave doesn’t even show up until Wednesday the 22nd of July. That’s a solid week of waiting. For the Iluka-North Wall breakwater, the early part of the forecast is just messy. We’ve got a huge spike in swell energy hitting 3316 (strong to very strong) on Sunday the 19th, but the wind is all wrong, cross-onshore and lumpy, making it a complete write-off for a paddle. The set-up looks more interesting for kite surfing than paddle surfing honestly.
The real standout in this whole outlook is Wednesday morning, the 24th of July. The wind will be light and cross-off from the SW, cleaning up a 5ft swell from the E. The period is a solid 11 seconds, so it’ll be a proper groundswell with some shape. The water temp is about 69°F, which is pretty average for the time of year, nothing unusual there. The forecast says “expect very good surf conditions,” and I’d have to agree, it’s the best call of the whole run.
The next best option, and it’s a close second, is Saturday morning, the 25th of July. The wind is forecast to be glassy, absolutely dead calm from the WSW, with a 6ft groundswell from the ESE. The period is a very long 12 seconds, meaning long lines and deep water energy. For a breakwater setup, that long period should wrap in nicely and give you some proper, clean waves. It’s a bit of a stretch to call it a guarantee this far out, but it’s promising.
The rest of the second week, from the 26th onwards, fades back into smaller, choppier conditions. The morning of the 26th has a 6ft cross-off from the SSW, but a moderate breeze will keep it from being truly clean. The 27th and 28th drop off significantly in size and energy.
So, in short: sit tight, wait out the week, and pencil in Wednesday the 24th and Saturday the 25th as your best bets. It’s not a classic run, but those two mornings have potential.
Rusty.
