The Lowdown
Alright folks, Rusty here. Let's have a look at what's on offer at Coffs Harbour-North Wall over the next couple of weeks.
Right off the bat, we're looking at a real mixed bag. The pattern starts with a thumping big swell that's going to be too much for this spot. The first real standout is a bit of a wait, but it's a beauty.
The first session worth paddling out for is on Tuesday, the 21st of July, in the morning. The swell has dropped to a still solid 6 ft from the east, with a 10-second period. The wind is a clean offshore from the SSW, so the face should be looking pretty tidy. The energy is moderate (604), and the wave comment says it's looking very good. This is a solid option for the experienced crew.
The pattern then goes quiet for a long stretch. From Tuesday afternoon right through to the end of the month, we're looking at small, weak surf with poor conditions. There's a couple of mornings with glassy conditions, like Saturday the 25th of July with a 3 ft SSE swell and a nice 11-second period, but the wave comment says it's only marginal. The energy is weak (377). This is a window for a longboard or a groveler, but it's not lighting the world on fire. The water temp is about 68°F, which is pretty normal for the time of year.
That blank run lasts until the very end of the window. The standout to circle on your calendar is Saturday, the 1st of August. The morning session is looking excellent. A solid 6 ft swell from the SSE with an 8-second period, and the wind is a clean cross-off from the S. The energy is ramping up to a strong 613. The wave comment says "expect very good surf conditions". This is the pick of the whole forecast.
The following day, Sunday, the 2nd of August, brings a messy onshore wind, so that clean window on Saturday is the one to aim for.
Then, on Monday, the 3rd of August, the swell jumps up again to 8 ft from the south, with a 10-second period. That's pushing into expert-only territory. The wind is a clean cross-off, and the energy is very strong (1826). The wave comment says it's excellent for experienced surfers. This is a big, powerful session for the crew who know what they're doing.
So, to sum it up: the first half of the week is a write-off from the big swell, then we get a couple of small windows before a long flat spell. The real action picks up at the start of August. Saturday the 1st morning is the best bet for the average surfer, and Monday the 3rd is a big one for the experts.
Stay safe, stay keen.
Rusty.
