The Lowdown
G’day, this is Rusty.
Alright, listen up. The next 16 days for the Coffs Coast are a real mixed bag. We’re looking at a lot of ordinary, blown-out junk, but there are two absolutely cracking windows that stand out like a diamond in a cow patty. The water temp is about average for this time of year, so a steamer won’t hurt first thing.
We start with a little taste on Wednesday 19 August. Coffs Harbour-North Wall (Coffs Harbour) will be your best bet early. It’s a point break, and the morning is looking glassy with a light offshore wind from the SSW at just 3 mph. You’ll find clean 4 ft waves from the ESE, but the period is a short 8 seconds, so not a heap of push. The combined energy is weak (342). Expect good surf here, but it’s barely a warm-up.
Then we hit a flat spell. From Thursday 20 August right through to Monday 24 August, there’s nothing worth paddling for. The wind is onshore and strong, the swell drops to under 3 ft, and the conditions are poor. Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 are still pretty ordinary, with marginal conditions at best.
Thursday 27 August morning gives us a small window – glassy again at the North Wall (Coffs Harbour) with 3 ft from the SSE, but it’s surfable, not special.
Now, for the first standout – Friday 28 August. This is the pick of the near-term. The morning at Coffs Harbour-North Wall is glassy once more, with a light ENE breeze at 3 mph. The swell is 4 ft from the SE with a 9-second period, giving cleaner, more lined-up waves. The combined energy is moderate (289). Expect good surf conditions. It won’t be huge, but it will be clean and fun. The crowd can be an issue here, so get in early.
Saturday 29 August afternoon also looks promising with a fresh offshore wind from the SW (9 mph) and clean 4 ft waves from the SSE. A solid backup.
But the true best on offer is the weekend of Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August. This is your session. On Sunday 30 August, the North Wall (Coffs Harbour) will be pumping in the morning with a light cross-offshore breeze. The swell builds to 6 ft from the SSE, with a 9-second period. The combined energy jumps right up to strong (555). By the afternoon it’s glassy, and the forecast is for *very good surf conditions*. The waves will have some real grunt.
Monday 31 August morning is the big one for the crew who aren’t scared of a bit of wind. The swell is only 2 ft from the SSE, but the period is a massive 19 seconds. That’s proper groundswell. Combined energy is very high (628). A moderate offshore wind from the SSW at 16 mph will keep it clean. Because it’s such a long period, it will break best down the point, holding its shape. This is expert territory with that size and energy. Expect a wild, powerful session.
After Monday 31 August, the swell starts to fade and the wind turns messy again. September 1 and 2 are poor. We’ve got nothing good after that in the window.
So to sum up: the first week is mostly flat and ugly, but lock in Friday 28 August morning for clean, small fun, and absolutely clear your calendar for Sunday 30 August and Monday 31 August for the best, most powerful waves of the outlook.
This is Rusty, signing off.
